The end of December 99 is the end of signature updates for IBM AV. NAV for OS2
is
available for corporate users only. Stand alone desktop OS/2 users are just
plain
SOL as far as Symantec is concerned. Sad, ain't it?

yes, there is a way, I even had a rexx script to do that. It is pretty simple,
you just need to look at the extended attributes of a file, get the one named
ICON, and dump it to a file.
I will search my harddrive for that script, it has been a long time since I
used it...

Do the following :-
- pkunzip FIRUNPKG.ZIP -d to get the FI unzipped.
- Get the Java Runtime Libraries file JAVAINUF.EXE (self-extracting).
- Run the Java EXE like this :-
JAVAINUF -di -ov
this will create the correct unzipped structure for you.
- Lastly, run INSTALL to install the Runtime Libs

Agreed on all accounts, esp. the torpedo idea. Those of us
who -- out of laziness or whatever -- use NS to participate
here are out of luck, because it doesn't let you diddle your
return address. At least not NS 2.02. I'm not sure if the
"Reply To" field in 4.61 might be used for that purpose.
So, I can count on receiving Spam after every post here. At
the moment, I don't particularly care, since my e-mail addr.
will be changing in the near future.

Hi --
I think it is Sundial (who put out Mesa, Clearlook, and other
OS/2 s/w) that is developing what promises to be an excellent
smart SPAM-filtering / processing applet, that will keep most
of this stuff from reaching you in the first place. It learns,
too, so whatever may slip by today can be nailed tom'w. They
have done a demo or two at our user group, getting feedback
for improvements. No idea when it will be released, but the
OS/2 platform will get it first ! Keep watching the skies.

No, it isn't. Net abuse is net abuse, and you agreed to refrain from
such behavior under pain of losing your account with Earthlink. The
ONLY way to fight spam is to go over the spammer's head, to kill their
accounts.

Subj: help!!! PGCC is not working
From: "G. van der Veer" <beve@dds.nl>
Hi,
When I run any program (for example Squid) compiled in PGCC 1.1.3 or
below I get the following message:
SYS0191: GCC29166 cannot be run in an OS/2 session.
I installed the files which i got from http://www.goof.com/pcg/os2/
according the instructions.
I have ensured myself that all paths are in the path and libpath in my
config.sys (and of course EMX 0.9D fix 2 had already been installed).
When I toggle of protectonly it does not work either, so gcc29166.dll is
not a dos-executable either. Maybe I need to install XFree86 for the
runtime libraries?
current system:
Processor: Intel Pentium II 350 MHz
Motherboard: Gateway 2000
Internal memory: 320 MB
Operating system: OS/2 Aurora
PS. I had the same troubles when using OS/2 Warp 4.0 Fixpak 6 with
earlier versions of PGCC.
I hope that I can get the runtime libraries working. Otherwise I have to
say goodbye till Star Office too :-(
Another option might be to recompile the sources for PGCC... has anybody
an idea on how to do this?
I hope someone can help me out of this mess,
kind regards,
Berry van der Veer

Subj: Need help to uninstall HPFS386
From: Peter Stahl <peter.stahl@abc.se>
Hi,
I have a BIG problem.
I have installed HPFS386 on my WARP4 computer.
I would like to uninstall it, but that does not function.
I have 2 computers, connected as a peer lan. On the "server"
I have 3 os/2 partitions, one Bootable HPFS WARP 4 no fixpaks,
one Bootable HPFS WARP 4 with fixpak 11 and one HPFS Datapartition.
The Datapartition I share on the peer lan.
I installed HPFS386 on WARP 4 fixpak 11 and after much trying
I got it to function.
BUT, if I boot to the other WARP partition without HPFS386 it
can't read or write my Datapartition.
Either I install HPFS386 on all partitions and hope that BOOTOS2
can manage HPFS386, or I uninstall HPFS386.
I changed config.sys and removed HPFS386 and now I can't access
my datapartition from neither bootpartition.
I've tried to change accesses and permissions but nothing works.
One thing does function, reinstall HPFS386 and fixpak 11 can
read and write the datapartition.
Anyone that knows how to get rid off HPFS386 ?

does NOT. Is this just another company whose support personnel drip with
contempt for OS/2, and will orphan the OS/2 version in a few months? Did
Norman itself write the OS/2 version or did Norman buy the product from
another company (meaning that Norman may not even have any OS/2

What probably happened is that you configured file security,
so that you have an Access Control List (ACL) now, which will
prevent you from accessing the drive(s) without the proper
authority.
I don't know much about this, however, you could try
re-enabling HPFS386, and renaming your ACL and see what
happens. I believe the ACL is in the IBMLAN directory, but the
documentation should have more relevant and accurate
information.

Subj: LoadDskF.exe & IBMWorks CSD 2.1
From: j.welton@mailcity.com
Even though I have all the other OS/2 suites at my disposal, I'm
fascinated with IBMWorks. It works very well on my system. I looked
around to see if any updates were available and I found:
1. CSD 2.1, works-csd.zip, ~8 Meg, dated 6/18/96
2. Add RFT text filter (16 bit) to IBM Works - README readrft.txt, ~1k,
11/1/95
3. Add RFT text filter (16 bit) to IBM Works, wksrft.zip, ~86K, 11/1/95
4. Spreadsheet rounding problems Fix, wksfix1.zip, ~409K, 12/2/95
My current Warp 4 version of IBMWorks appears to be newer then the
files released above. Example:
8-12-96 3:12a 15593 0 fpwobj.dll
8-12-96 3:12a 20687 28128 ibmworks.exe
8-12-96 3:12a 25385 61 ien30pxx.dll
8-12-96 3:15a 44993 61 about.exe
8-12-96 3:21a 52552 61 fpwmon.exe
8-12-96 3:21a 385516 61 fpwpim.exe
8-12-96 3:22a 109080 2736 pimrl.dll
8-12-96 3:23a 205444 0 fpwpim.hlp
8-25-96 1:05p 392137 61 ien30pwp.dll
112 file(s) 8384313 bytes used
1854432 K bytes free
So my question may not be applicable. Unzipping the CSD file above I
find:
5-21-96 9:59a 1884160 0 WKS21_1.DSK
5-21-96 10:03a 1884160 0 WKS21_2.DSK
5-21-96 10:04a 1884160 0 WKS21_3.DSK
5-21-96 10:05a 1884160 0 WKS21_4.DSK
5-21-96 10:07a 1884160 0 WKS21_5.DSK
And when I issue the following command using the with the latest
LoadDskF.exe
[F:\work]LoadDskF F:\work\WKS21_1.DSK A: /f
I get the error message:
Unsupported disk type
I am trying to create a set of floppies on standard 1.44kb disks. When
I look at the size of the DSK files above I see they are larger than
1.44kb and assume the system is telling me my floppy is insufficient to
support the volume needed. I tried issuing the same command to have
the data created on another (fixed) partition only to receive an error
that the program is unable to write to a fixed disk.
So how does one get these DSK files over to floppies?
And last but not least, you'll see the unzipped DSK files are dated
5/1/96 whereas my IBMWorks files are dated 8/12/96 so I'm assuming my
current Wapr 4 IBMWorks is updated with all of the files found in the
5/1/96 package. Am I assuming correctly?

Hello Chris,
The file you want is authored by Philip O'Malley. His last release
was in 1996 and called: CONFIGSORT 2.1 and is located here:
ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/config/cfgsrt21.zip
This program continues to work very well today and makes working with
the config.sys file very easy.

Virus Control is the main business of Norman, the other products

Yup, it does. Even uses RSU.... this will probably be more unified in
the next release.

No denying, Win is where the money is, and where most of the
developers work. But OS/2 is one of our target platforms, and we have
in house developers. I am myself working exclusively with the OS/2
version. (On-access scanner).

If you handle a lot of Office documents, it's a good idea to scan
them. Even if they don't break out on your system, it's not that cool
to spread them along to others. But needs differ.

Is it the exact same message? Check the headers to find out -- look for
the message ID line, in particular. If it's the exact same message,
right down to the ID, then chances are the problem is at your ISP;
they're not deleting the message correctly from their system. It's also
possible there's a bug in Netscape. If the message is different each
time, then it's being sent again and again. Inform the administrator of
the system that's sending the message, and your ISP if necessary (I posted
a lengthy message saying how to track down the person to contact about
spam in this thread a few days ago).

First, that update is for the Warp 3 version of IBM Works, which was
available on floppy disks. The Bonus Pack apps all came on IBM's
Extended Floppy disks, (XDFLOPPY) which could put about 1.8M onto a
1.4M floppy. So you need to be running the XDFLOPPY driver in
config.sys in order to read and write them.

You are. Warp 4's IBMWorks is newer, and has more features/bug fixes
than that old update. There IS no update for IBMWorks in Warp 4.

The OS/2 versions which are supplied with HPFS386 come with instructions
and utilities for removing HPFS386, in particular for removing ACLs,
which HPFS honours but doesn't alter. You need to go back to wherever
you got HPFS386 from and get the rest of it too.

you probably have remmed BASEDEV=XDFLOPPY.FLT from your config.sys ?
you need it to make Xtended Density images, I think.

This has gone on for some time ... so I looked at Netscape Trash and there

I wouldn't be that sceptic before you investigate some more. Norman
have had VirusControl for OS/2 for many years, they use the same
scannerengine and system as under windows, but the scanner is totally
100% OS/2 programmed, in OS/2. They have developed it themselves, and
the ones programmed it are still in the company, with strong feelings
for OS/2. There will be an internet update, if you had looked more on
the website, you had found that the OS/2 version supports RSU, the
same system IBM uses to upgrade the system, and you could automati
this by calling the proper program with the link, say once a week, and
voila, you have internet upgrade. Anyway, they have a small installer
that installs some icons in your Norman folder that does just this...
but it's currently in beta (it never made it to the 4.70 distribution.
Another interesting feature is that they are developing a realtime
scanner for OS/2 (at this moment, so don't say that they are tuning
down OS/2 development, one of Norman's big markeds are Germany with
all the OS/2 computers there).
I've used it for years, and I will never go back to Symantec or some
other 'fancy GUI, not so fast scanner' system again.

This can happen in a DLL when the DLL itself is dynamically linked to
other DLLs and it can't find one of them.
For example:
My_Exe.EXE is linked to GCC29166.DLL which is dynamically linked to
BLAH.DLL which can't be found. This error message would be reported if
you tried to run My_Exe.EXE.

Harold,
for someone who is representing a company that has a product to sell
to the members of "connected" comunity, your reply was hardly
"customer focused". The information contained on your corporate web
site explains damn little about how your products work within their
specific environments, most of the information is specifically
directed toward the user of Microsoft products, and some of your sites
links (ie., to get to the demo pages), don't even work.
Just what does your OS/2 product do and how does it work? What makes
it better than McAfee, Synamtec, or Anti-Viral Toolkit Pro for that
matter. Give me some details and comparisons, please. How good your
product is for the money is not for you to say... "That's for you to
find out :)", it's for you to show, tell and convince me!

Hi Steven.
Flight is a DB2 query tool for OS/2. It generates SQL queries, updates

This On-access scanner. Is that a real time, resident, virus stopper?
Or does the Norman AV have a resident thing to stop a virus from doing
it's damage? (In OS/2 itself, or in a DOS/WinOS2 session).
IMO, that is the one big item missing in most of the other AV
packages, and the only one, that I have ever seen, that does not
impact system operation to an unacceptable level, is the IBM
antivirus.
In general, I am having a terrible time with trying to figure out what
some of these antivirus programs do, or do not do. There seems to be
an industry wide attitude of "Try it, and find out what it will do".
Sorry, that is NOT an acceptable thing when it comes to something as
important as Antivirus protection.
Just my C$.03 ($.02 US)...

And for copying the images to floppy you may have to run the "xdfcopy"

>Hey, I'm a programmer not a salesman :)
Being a programmer myself, I like this answer. <grin>
Question: As I understand it, your company is the one which bought out
the ThunderByte folks, right?
I've had a lifetime license for the DOS version of TBAV, and I had made
an inquiry about it some time ago and received no response, and the web
site seems to indicate that all TBAV licenses have been terminated.
Unfortunately, Norman doesn't seem to have an equivalent product to the
DOS version of TBAV (which would work under DOS, OS/2, and Windows).
Instead, in order to get the same functionality from the Norman product,
it appears that I must purchase two separate versions of the product
(both Windows and OS/2 versions).
Do you folks have any multiplatform deals? Or are folks like me who
were smart enough to use a DOS scanner before simply screwed now?

Every so often I'll get a message that will cause trouble. There is a
stray character somewhere that bugs my mail client and the message is
not completely read because the mail client stalls on the bad character.
Next time messages are fetched we repeat the above. I can also imagine
that a bad character in the message file name will cause trouble.
My technique in this situation is to use an FTP client to access the
file directly on the server and manually delete the file.
You'll have to dig around a bit on the server to find your mail
directory. If you know the message file name on the server, just delete
the file. If you don't know the file name, work from the message date
and look for a file with a stale date in that range. The dates may not
line up very well because the message could have crossed the
international date line, a time zone, been held somewhere, or passed
through a machine that was using an incorrect date. You can also
download a file (via FTP) and verify that the text matches your "scum".
Look before you leap, it would be embarrassing to delete your
configuration file.
If you want to download the message and dissect it, use the FTP binary
protocol.

I have only standard WARP 4 and not the server version.
This HPFS386.ZIP I found on Hobbes (I think) so I have not got
it from IBM and don't think they will help me get out
of an "illegal" copy of HPFS386.
I have tried it and it gets me in more trouble than the
bigger cache and speedincrease will compensate for.
It was very easy to install, just unzip the files and change
a couple of lines in CONFIG.SYS.
But HPFS386 couldn't use standard HPFS ACLs so I was forced to make
new ones.
I thought it would be equal easy to change back to standard
HPFS, just change CONFIG.SYS back to old contents, but HPFS
will not change HPFS386's ACLs.
I have tried to delete the ACLs in the same program as I create
new ones (Shared Resources and Network Connections) but HPFS
can't create new usable ACLs and it doesn't function without
ACLs either.
Do you know where to find PREPACL when one not has WARP SERVER ?

As an outside, but nearby, observer, I can only mention that Norman customers
I know about got away from the last couple of major virus outbreaks which
made the headlines here.
I do not use the product myself, since I do not run any Windows systems, do
not use MS Office or anything of that ilk, and those I exchange files with
run a check on everything incoming. Most of them seem to prefer Norman, and
the only one I know that ever had an infection used Solomon.

OK, THANKS...
I did download the Norman Virus Control 4.70 (30 day) demo. I am still
in the process of looking it over, but my initial impression is that
this is just as good (if not even better than) the IBM AV package.
Has anyone got any other comments about NVC??
Has anyone actually found, and fixed, a virus with it??
I think we may have a winner here, and if the other platforms work as
well as the OS/2 program, I, for one, will be recommending NVC to a
LOT of people, who have been using IBM AV, and are not at all
impressed with the Norton AV. More importantly, they do have a single
user OS/2 version available.
Any other comments???
Thanks...

FTP?!?!?! <Gulp>
Why use that (when in some cases at least, the ftpd will not have the
requisite permissions to even see, let alone change, the mail spool)?
Instead, I would advocate using telnet to connect to the POP3 server on
its standard port (ie 110), and then issue manual commands to locate the
offending message and delete it. The LIST command might well be enough
to identify the offender, or failing that use TOP n 0 to read the headers
of each message n until the buggy one is located. Thene just DELE n and
QUIT.
Piece of cake.

PREPACL came with the HPFS386 I downloaded -- don't remember from where.
Try using http://ftpsearch.lycos.com to look for a more comprehensive HPFS386
package.

Does Norman provide a realtime scanner for network traffic ?
To give a hint: If I was to design such a tool, it would sit
between the NIC driver and any protocol driver. Thus beeing

You might want to try using the util 'PREPACL'. This is provided with
Warp Server and is designed to remove ACLs from the filesystem. I think
you will need to re-install HPFS386 in order for this util to work. It
is the only way I know of removing ACLs from the filesystem.
Hope it helps,
Roland.

Well, imagine you are running 274 servers in a big company, where most
users use MS applications, but all the 274 servers are still OS/2.
Now, if one of the users manage to put a virus on the server some
place allmost everybody is accessing, how long time do you think it
will take to infect the whole company. Or, lets say that it wasn't a
virus, but a Trojan that contains a huge backdoor to the system, as
the wellknown BackOrifice. Now, since you only do take a regular scan
every night, the hackers have full access to your systems the rest of
the day. They can read files, install other programs, get passwords,
usernames, everything.....
A routinescan may have been a good enough solution some time ago, but
I believe that a real time scanner is the only secure sollution.

Yes. It will scan for viruses in files as you try to open them. If
viruses are found, access will be denied, and you will have options of
how to handle the file. (Repair, move to quarantine etc...)
> Or does the Norman AV have a resident thing to stop a virus from doing

The current version (4.7x) has a resident module that runs in
DOS/WinOS/2 sessions. But this will most likely be obsolete when the
on-access scanner is finished. The on-access scanner will check files,
no matter how or where they're opened from.

I agree, they've left out a bit of info there... I'll push on the web
administrator to update this.
> Just what does your OS/2 product do and how does it work?
The OS/2 product is pretty much the same as the Windows equivalent,
apart from the fact that there has been no on-access scanner available
yet. Which means it will scan for known and unknown viruses, trojans
and macro viruses, but you'll have to activate the virus scanner
manually. The user interface is a PM app that manages all modes of
scanning. It supports drag'n'drop of files/folders to scan, and allows
you to set date and times for scheduled scans if you want that. Most
viruses can be repaired (I think...), and there's quarantine support
for viruses that can not be repaired.
It uses the same engine and virus definition files as the Windows and
Novell versions, and updates to the engine and def files can be
downloaded from the web using RSU. The engine is the same source for
all platforms, and is of course fully mutithreaded and thread safe.

Hope this answers some of your questions. I'm not going to start a
product comparison here, as no one in their right mind would take that
as unbiased info anyway. But hopefully someone will do.

ACL = Access Control Lists
File permissions basically.
The entry server stores all ACL's in a file called the NET.ACC (along
with a lot of other account information).
The Advanced Server still uses a NET.ACC, but stores all ACL's as part
of the file system - in the f-node. Only the advanced server uses
HPFS386.
As long as the CONFIG.SYS has and IFS statement that relates to HPFS
then it should be possible to remove the ACL's with PREPACL. Once
PREPACL has been run (I forget the correct syntax) there won't be any
ACL's left and so regular HPFS should then be able to access the
filesystem as normal.

From: mohd.k.yusof@bohm.anu.edu.au (Khairil Yusof)
I've heard so many problems about this but the best solution (the one I'm
using)
is to use TVFS.
Map your HPFS directories to TVFS and share it from your TVFS drive. Since
TVFS
isn't HPFS then HPFS386 uses a normal ACL list. This works great and makes it
easy to see all your shared folders too. All in one drive or directory tree.
This should be good enough for most people if you have low network traffic.
There isn't a RMB on a folder and share it type thing but it's one way to go.
On Warp4:
HPFS386 - speed! Especially with heavy disk usage and if you have
a lot of memory.
HPFS - well everything works and it's LEGAL.
Note: Undelete doesn't work too well if you deleted something from a TVFS
drive
rather then from the original drive itself.
Bottom line is that HPFS386 on Warp4 is not supported/legal and has quirks, so
DON'T try it on a system that's important to your work.

I've been trying out 9lives by Ross Judson, and would like to
register it. A virtual desktop, it seems to work well with
Warp 4 FP12.
But I haven't found a valid email address. Does anyone know if
one can still register the program?

It is more trouble than it's worth. I had HPFS 386 running on my
machine -- and it was just fine. Then I added a peer network and all
the problems started. The biggest issue was that I could not get any
shares to work on a peer Win98 machine. As soon as I took HPFS 386 off,
everything is fine.
To remove it:
Run prepacl on every drive, run "help prepacl" in a command window to
get the syntax
Delete the files created by prepacl which contain the acl's
Change your config.sys file back to regular HPFS
Reboot
Say good-bye to problems.

Wanna buy a bridge? <g> Situation: large site, probably 3500
workstations running about 2/3 NT, 1/3 OS/2 desktops. Couple hundred
servers running everything from AIX to Solaris to NT to Warp Server.
MS virus comes in to one of the NT desktops which has drives mapped -
the server software is immaterial unless it's NT in which case the
problem is moderately compounded. This worm installs itself ON ALL
MAPPED DRIVES - who cares what the server is running except if it's an
NT domain controller it in turn infects all it's clients. Worm reads
the LMHOST file and sends itself to all addresses it finds. If the
addressee is an NT machine, the whole process repeats. The *Nix and
OS/2 boxes ignore the critter but eventually the worm hatches on an NT
machine and begins to encrypt all the data found on drives mapped by
infected NT machines, executing the file on the mapped drive. You
still don't want to do a live scan? I know one very big corp that
changed their tune in a hurry one day last January! The only group
that was unaffected was one paranoid bunch of developers who were
silly enough to have their Warp Servers running McAffe.
Not to say that Microsoft 'security' contaminates everything it
touches, but...

their site?
I got the e-mail, then went to the page, that they told me to go to,
then got the demo, with no problems (although it did seem to be a
little slow).
I suspect that the demo download site might be a little overloaded,
with people looking for an alternative <g>. Perhaps, the OS/2
community did the same thing to the Norman site, that they did to the
initial download server for Netscape 4.61 (crash and burn, due to a
"greater than anticipated" demand <g>).

I don't think there's anything that reads Rock Ridge for OS/2, which
is IMHO unfortunate and quite disgusting, considering there IS support
for someone's proprietary and totally nonstandard stuff... You'll have

It was already discontinued when I found it years ago. It was the best and
easiest to use virtual desktop manager that I've found yet. (Okay,
excluding the fvwm pager in *NIX).

After I filled out the request form (at the web site under download,
as I recall), I got an e-mail, with a little advertizing blurb, and a
web page to go to. I don't think I should post that web page, since
the Norman people seem to think they should send you the download site
address in an e-mail. If you got the e-mail, and the address doesn't
work, I suggest e-mail the Norman people, and tell them what is
happening. The e-mail, that I got, seemed to be a form letter, so I
can't see why the address would be incorrect. If you didn't fill in
the form, and/or didn't get an e-mail, I suggest you fill in the form
(again). If you can't get to the form, e-mail the Norman web site (I
think there is a place to do that on the home page), and ask what is
happening.
By the way, the demo does look very good. I suspect that Norman will
be my AV, shortly.
Hope this helps...

I haven't tried it to/from Linux, but infozip seems to transport long file
names fairly well - if zipping and ftp is an option.

The /W switch only activates Joliet support, but not support for
Rockridge AFAIK. RSJ claims that their CD-Writer filesystem is also
capable of Rockridge support, but I've never tried to read such a CD
using it and never found any TRANS.TBL files on the CDs that I made
myself. Download the demo-version and see yourself.

I've done a bit of searching and have come up empty. The closest thing
I found was some sort of Russian group, called the AlexGraf group, that
apparently has a version for windows called 9livesW; even has the
same icon. ??
The old read me also refers to a John Judson in Ontario as well as
Ross Judson in Fairfax, VA.

Well, there's still McAfee, Norman seems to be coming on strong
(per reports I'm hearing), and Walter Metcalf's OS/2 site on
About.Com has a new announcement that the venerable F-PROT is
going to spawn an OS/2 version. I'd say the glass is half-

IIRC, the "/W" switch enables the Microsoft "Joliet" lfn
extensions. I am not aware of any OS/2 software that handles the
Rock Ridge extensions used on linux CD's.

Subj: Sending Binary Files via sendmial?
From: bosmith <bosmith@ismi.net>
I am running Warp v3.0 with the IBM TCPIP stack. I use sendmail to
email text reports to users and it works quite well. I now have a need
to send a binary file (an Excel spreadsheet) and find that sendmail
won't deliver it properly.
Can anybody suggest a way to get this done outside of manually mailing
the report?
