Hmm.. this is a useful way of using the mount command. I'll keep that in mind
next time I'm "playing" around with the Linux server at home when adding some
old but useful HDs that might fail :)

The EA DATA. SF file is accessed by a index from the directory entry. It
can be fragmented and de-fragmented to your hearts content without
breaking it. The weak point is the index in the directory entry. If this
is altered by something which doesn't understand it (wilfully or
accidentally), then you get orphaned or cross-linked EAs.
I'm wondering if you used some utility to change the cluster size on
this drive? Each EA in EA DATA. SF uses an intergral number of clusters,
usually just 1. If you change the cluster size with something which
doesn't update the EA DATA. SF file *and* the directory entries
correctly, you will stuff a large number of EAs for good. Backing the
drive up and restoring it with a non-OS/2 program, especially if the
cluster size was different when restored will also ensure problems!
Graham.

I use for backup RSJ CD-Writer, BackAgain/2 and an Plexwriter 8/20
CD-R Drive and it works together. The only thing that you must keep in
mind is, that you must have so much space on the drive where the
Temp-Directory of RSJ is located, as the Data of the Backup will be.
The reason is, that RSJ will not earlier begin to burn the data on the
CD, until BackAgain has accomplished his work.

Yes. . . It's called "EAUTIL.EXE" and should be in the "\OS2" directory on
your
OS2 boot partition. See the OS/2 "Command Reference" for details and syntax
info.
Better yet, search Hobbes and / or other sources for "EAB203.ZIP" (or later,
if
available). Here's the description (somewhat terse) of what that provides:
" EAB203.ZIP
Eabackup and Earestore
Version 2.03
94/11/04
EABACKUP and EARESTOR are utility programs designed to backup and
restore
extended attributes associated
with OS/2 files. The programs are run from the command line in either an
OS/2
windowed or OS/2 full-screen
session."
I've found the EABackUp and EARestor utilities to be invaluable in saving and
reconstructing extended attributes on FAT partitions. They will also work on
HPFS partitions, although that's not usually necessary. (The best solution,
as
you've indicated you are aware, is to hide your OS/2 partition from the
vagaries of Win 98 by converting it to HPFS. But I understand from my own
experience there can be valid reasons for not doing that.) Just be sure to
thoroughly read the "ReadMe.Doc" file included in the EAB203.Zip package. If
you can't locate the archive file (I don't remember for certain, but it may be
"IBM Employee Written Software"), contact me by e-mail and I'll send it to
you.
Finally. . . the replies you received from Rob Burton and Graham Norris in
this thread are, in my opinion, both accurate and pertinent. There's little I
could add except to say that I've defragmented the "EA DATA. SF" files on my
FAT partitions hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times over the years I've been
using OS/2 (since the day ver. 2.0 was released) without damaging them.
That's
not to say that I've not "killed" them by other means, however. . . DOS based
backup and restore software is almost always problematic, especially if one is
repartitioning, reformatting and restoring without using an "EA aware" disk
management utility such as Partition Magic. I suspect the problem with Win 98
may be that it's trying to assign a "Windows Long FileName" attribute to every
file it finds and moves in it's "automatic disk defragmentation and
performance
optimization mode". But that's just speculation on my part.

I work for a data recovery firm, Advanced data solutions LLC.
http://www.adv-data.com 1-888-994-3282 24H/7days
If you send it in we can do a free evaluation with no obligation. If
you call us, we can give you a price estimate. We would have to see the
drive to give a firm price. Our Diagnostic evaluation is free of any
obligation to buy our service.
Data recovery info:
If your data is worth more than US$100, I would not use a disk utility
to try and get your data. The reason is that these utilities have a
main focus of getting the disk to work again. But in the process they
overwrite many areas on the disk. These areas may contain your most
valuable data. Over-writing data makes it unrecoverable forever!
Even if the program does not write to the disk, if your disk is
damaged, you may only have one chance to get the data. If the software
tries to read a damaged area it might break the head or cause other
damage. That broken head will scrape the disk. We have seen drives that
are black inside because most of the magnetic layer was scraped off. If
your disk is having problems it may be due to physical problems with
the disk. You may not realize this till too late.
Many people think they can use these utilities to play with their
drive, and then come to us and expect a successful recovery. But be
warned, if you or anyone else uses disk utilities on a drive, you are
very likely to lose data forever. If your data is not very important,
then it's no big deal.
We see cases where this happens all the time. As a data recovery lab we
have ways to safeguard your data during recovery, that is unavailable
to computer shops or end users. We have spent well over $100,000 to
equip our lab, to assure the best recovery abilities in the world. We
also have over 15 years experience in these types of recoveries.
So the best thing to do is send your drive to us and get a free
diagnostic evaluation. We will then give you a firm price and tell you
how much data is there. You can even specify the particular files that
you want. We can tell you if they are available, before we charge you
anything. You pay only for a successful recovery.
We can usually recover within a few days. You can ship to us via
priority shipping services. We currently handle recoveries from all
over the world.
We recover from almost ant type of media or operating systems
including: Damaged Hard Drives (Crashed, Fire, Water, Dropped) Viruses,
Sabotage, Lost Passwords, Database Recovery, Forensic Data Exam,
Deleted, Erased, Missing-Files, and Directories. / Network Servers,
Windows NT, NTFS, Novell, Unix, Raid 0-5, Windows 3.1x / 95 / 98,
Removable Media, ZIP, JAZ, SyQuest, Bernoulli, Optical Floppy, Laptops
etc.
I doubt a successful recovery could be preformed for less than we
charge. Our prices (includes repair (if necessary) and data recovery)
are as follows: No price will exceed $1,200 US$(plus parts) for DOS,
Windows 3.1x, 95, 98 or Macintosh recoveries! Usually if we don't have
to open the drive it is less than $600. We do recoveries as for as low
as $95. Other operating systems may cost more depending on complexity.
Many of our competitors spend well over US$100,000 a Month on Internet
advertising. If you see an ad in PCWEEK or other such Magazines, they
run about $15,000 a month. If this sounds like a lot, it is. Who do you
think pays for these ADs?
That is why on average they have to charge 2 to 4 times as much as us,
for the same job. They also tend to go for the easier jobs in volume.
If your hard drive is not a profitable as the others, expect it to get
less attention.
We prefer lower cost advertising, such as here. So I guess if you want
to pay for a company's over-priced AD campaign, that's your business.
But if you prefer a company that puts most of its money in to the
actual recovery, pick us.
If anyone doubts my claims, you can look at the Ads, banner and print.
The prices for these Ads and the minimum prices are available from web
sites, or by asking for a media package from the magazine.

Subj: Re: Support for new 1.3 Gb Fujitsu MO drive??: Yes - in FAT format
From: nate@lcs.mit.edu (Nathan Liskov)
With some hints from Mike Reichel, I now have my 1.3 Gb drive working
in superfloppy (FAT) format with the Fujitsu driver and my 640 Mb
drive working in HPFS with the n512dasd.flt and os2dasd.dmd drivers.
The relevant lines from my config.sys are:
DEVICE=E:\OS2\BOOT\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
device=e:\os2\boot\modisk.sys /I0:6[1]
basedev=n512dasd.flt /v /!6
BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD /of
ifs=f:\drivers\ramfs.ifs
run=d:\u2\ramdisk.exe u:
device=os2aspi.dmd /all
My 1.3 Gb is SCSI 6 on controller 0. The /I0:6[1] switch on the
fujitsu driver says to apply the driver only to the SCSI 6 device on
controller 0. The /!6 switch on N512dasd.flt says to ignore the SCSI
6 device. The /all parameter on os2aspi.dmd was necessary to get both
drivers working at the same time.
The modisk.sys driver wants to assign a drive letter that is one
higher than the last allocated drive. Thus it is necessary to call
modisk.sys after os2cdrom to avoid conflict with the cdrom. Also, I
moved ramdisk on letter up to avoid conflict. My drive letters now
are as follows:
p: last hard drive partition
q: 640 mb mo drive
r: not assigned
s: cdrom
t: 1.3 gb mo drive
u: hpfs ramdisk
I think that the /!6 switch in n512dasd causes the letter r to be
skipped.
nate liskov
p.s. if and when os2dasd.dmd is extended to work with the 1.3 gb
drive, i will drop modisk.sys and operate HPFS on the 1.3 gb drive.

Hi Mike:
I had a similar problem on one computer, as Win95 corrupted
the partition table by writing Boot Manger over the first C:
drive partition and I got around it without reformatting with
Partition Magic. First I deleted the Boot Manage partition from
Win95, then I booted OS/2 from floppy and ran PQMagicd to
re-size the Win 95 partition so I had about 50 MB at the disc
front. I then booted OS/2 from floppy again, and "fdisk"ed in a
new Boot Manager.

Subj: Yet another HPFS info update
From: "Mike Ruskai" <thannymeister@spambegone.yahoo.com>
After modifying the hpfssi.exe program to read from the drive directly, to
overcome the 2GB limitation of OS/2's file access API's on non-HPFS386
systems, the wrong sector was being read in a few rare cases.
Well, I finally figured out why, and corrected the program. Part of the
BIOS parameter block is the hidden sector count, which specifies how many
sectors there are before the boot sector, which is considered the first
sector on the drive. This is the same for the vast majority of drives,
but it can be different, which is what was causing the failure.
The new version, which should handle any HPFS drive (really, this time, I
mean it) is here:
http://home.att.net/~thanny/hpfssi.zip
Also with it are these:
http://home.att.net/~thanny/dumpsect.zip
http://home.att.net/~thanny/sectdata.zip
The second program should write your HPFS SuperBlock to a file called
sectdata.dat. The third is an example of what the data should look like.

How do you know this? The documentation (an old OS/2 2.1 book) I have does
not say whether it is a pointer directly to the cluster containing the EA or
a pointer relative to the start of the EA file (or an index as you put it).
I've seen OS/2 defragmenters on Hobbes. Is it possible that you are using
one of these and it is EA aware and it is making the necessary adjustments?
A Win98 defragger would not be EA aware and thus would not make the
adjustments. The pattern of losing EAs fits so neatly with a EA unaware
defragger that I am not willing to give it up without some concrete
evidence.
The reason I'm looking for utilities to show file to cluster allocation and
dump directory entries is to confirm or contradict my suspicion. If I dumped
the EA DATA. SF file and some directory entries I could tell whether the
pointers were an index or not. If the cluster allocation of EA DATA. SF
changed consistent with a defragmentation effort and the directory entries
did not change, that would suggest that a defragmenter caused the problem.
If the directory entries changed but the cluster allocation did not change
this would suggest it was not a defragger.

If this is what is happening, a dump of the directory entries might suggest
what kind of directory entry alteration is taking place and that might lead
to the culprit.

The only such utilities that I've used are PowerQuest's Partition Magic and
Drive Image. Both should be EA aware. In fact one of my FAT partitions was
backed up using Drive Image. Just prior to restoring it from a Drive Image
image file the partition had about 3M of extended attirbutes. After
restoration it had 13M, check disk showed no lost extended attibutes and
icons looked more like what I was used to. I don't think that cluster
resizing is an issue here. I don't do cluster resizing on a daily basis but
I do lose extended attirbutes on (almost) a daily basis if I use Win98.
Prior to suspending the use of Win98, I was running chkdsk on every
partition every time I booted OS/2. If it wasn't clear before: I have
several FAT partitions and a couple of HPFS partitions. My OS/2 boot
partition is FAT. Netscape and Java run on an HPFS partition. All the FAT
partitions have suffered from lost extended attributes while I was running
Win98. None have have suffered lost attributes since I stopped using Win98.
I have not had any difficulties with the HPFS partitions.

It's an index. There's another table structure within the EA file that
it points into. You can defrag it safely with a suitable defragger. The
problem with some defraggers, and Microsoft SCANDISK, is that they can
damage the index in the directory entries of the files. The Windows LFN
feature also uses the EA index field as part of its long filename
support and will change it to suit itself.
There is a single hard rule you MUST follow: If you have files that you
want to preserve the EA information for, put them on an HPFS drive (or a
hidden primary partition) so Windows won't see them.

A simple experiment:
Add an EA to a file. Copy the file to a blank floppy disk. Check out the
fields with a disk sector editor. Write a couple more files to the
floppy and take another look with the sector editor. Delete the first
file and write a bigger file: the disk is now fragmented. Use it under
Windows and see if the EAs get changed. Run SCANDISK or your defragger
against it and see what happens.

Is it just me or is HPFS and OS/2 really missing from the list? Their
web site does mention OS/2 but not HPFS. Well, I hope for the original

Another nice thing is that this way you can verify (fschk) a disk image

No not yet (I have read an article in Computer Technik about a few DVD-RAMs),
but you probably know what happened with USB: suddenly there were drivers ...
If new drivers appear, they will be announced at for instance:
http://www.buntspecht.de/news/de/index.html
or
http://www.OS2.org/
and the drivers themselves of course shall appear at:

Ivan,
Same problem here. I began noticing this after having done some
installations from the WarpUp diskette. At first I thought it was Netscape
and/or Java 1.1.8. After having read a number of these posts, though, it
appeared to be the Fixpak 12. (We have M64GRADD Driver Version 1.00,
Component ID 562107701, Current CSD level: XR03010, Prior CSD level: XR02100
for ATI Mach 64/RageII). Well, I backed out of Fixpak 12 down to 6 (which
has worked brilliantly for us for some time). I also backed out the Device
Driver Fixpak. The problem still persists, however. I've found no solution
offered here in these newsgroups or in Compuserve. I'm really surprised that
the noise about this problem seems to have died back a bit as well. If
anyone has had success ridding their machine(s) of this nuisance, I do hope
they will reply to a message in this thread. Otherwise, it looks like I'm
headed for a fresh reinstall, then Fixpak 6... I don't think the hard drive
can withstand this going on much longer.

Hi,
One of my DAT 4Gb streamers is on its last legs. I will have to replace
it and I am thinking about a DAT3 (12-24Gb) streamer. Options are HP,
Sony and IBM.
I presently use Sytos plus (2.1 and 2.2) which does not have drivers for
any DAT3 streamers (anyone knows different). The IBM sreamer is the
only one with a driver for Sytos. I am also migrating to Warp for
e-Business.
Anyone who is happily using Warp's Personnaly Safe and Sound. Are you
happy with it?
Is there any backup software for Warp4 that anyone can recommend, which
recognises DAT3 streamers and has full disaster recovery facilities?
Many thanks.
Charles

AFAIK, BackAgain/2 Professional supports all three drives you mentioned.
The publisher, Computer Data Strategies, is very responsive to email or
calls to Technical Support.
Their website is www.cds-inc.com. Their technical support voice line is
651-730-4156. This is in the midwest of the United States which is 6
hours behind London prevailing time.
FYI, they offer DAT 3 drives for sale (but don't list prices on the web).
Here is the text for HP offerings:

As others have pointed out, The Graham Utilities and Gammatech Utilities
are good buys. And check out DFSEE, at http://www.fsys.demon.nl
For DOS there's ZIPZAP, DDT and YASE and likely others. Try a Simtel FTP
site.

The IBM's are actually Lynx drives, which are actually OEM HP's :) so
that might cut you're choices down a bit. I like the HP's because
they have 3 years warrany whereas the best I can extract from Sony is
12 months.

It looks like a nice product and certainly works, but... its support
for tape drives is woeful. In fact, I've yet to get it to work with
anything I've tried.

Check out Cristies PC-Bax. Its multi platform and does a solid job.
Its the only one so far to pass our testing. I've been trialing and
using it under WSeB for the last couple of months and so far its been
great (also done a disaster recovery within that time too).

You can purchase Gammatech Utilities or the Graham Utilities online or
you can go down to your local computer shop and buy Norton Utilities or
Network Associates Nuts and Bolts for Windows. I'd suggest installing
Norton Utilities in your Windows system as it is at least not actively
hostile to OS/2 and is a whole lot better than M$'s junk anyway. You can
operate either of the Windows utilities sector editors from a DOS (or
WinDOS) boot floppy.

This may be a rather nasty way to "fix" the problem, but if you create
at least two Primary partitions on your HD, and put Winxx in one, and
OS/2 in the other, in general, only one *or* the other will be visible,
and not both at the same time. Both partitions would be known as C:
while they're online; I believe Boot Manager knows how to make one vs
the other active automatically. If Winxx can't even see the OS/2
partition, then it can't trash it; you can also make the OS/2 partiton
HPFS, which will futher prevent Winxx from seeing it (but maybe not
trashing it).
If you really need to share data between them, create a separate logical
partition drive that can be seen from either partition, but only keep
data there -- no programs files.
If this helps, great -- if not, ignore it. Good luck.

I've seen them in cable specialty shops, or at large computer fairs --
it's an external cable connector that plugs into an internal cable end.
You take over a spare "slot" with this internal to external adapter,
plug the end of your (probably the small) internal into the inside part
of it, and then hang your extra devices off of it. (I've not used it,
so your mileage may vary...)
Good luck...

Absolutely, especially with SCSI already. Use a removable or external

Much faster, cheaper and more reliable.

If responsive means they send back an automated response promising
further action within a few days, then yes, I'd say they are responsive.
As I've never received any follow up after that, I personally would have
to say that in my opinion they are not the slightest bit responsive.
They didn't even respond to two emails asking how to pay them to upgrade

On the other hand, the software does seems to work well. I wasn't
reporting major difficulties, but they certainly didn't seem interested.

Yes, probably, but not nessecarily at ATA66 speeds. DANIS506.ADD (on
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/) does however. I reccomend that you use it even
if you don't have an ATA66 device, as this is a most excellent driver!

Subj: SYS0525 - Cannot complete format after partitioning
From: Tony Saucedo <Tony.Saucedo@eagletcs.com>
I have attempted to install OS/2 V3 on this 3GB
IDE (Seagate) on a Compaq Deskpro EP.
After partitioning drive and selecting format the
installation fails using OS/2 V3.
Next I tried with OS/2 V4, same problem and failure.
So I decided to try from the command line instead
of the installation.
- FDISK (create a primary partition of 1GB)
- Save and Exit then reboot
- Format c: /fs:hpfs
...format completed message is display and
get prompted for Volume label.
- Enter volume name, results in SYS0525
(...if no volume name is enter same error
SYS0525 occurs)
The following error is return;
SYS0525: The specified disk cannot be formatted.
EXPLANATION: One or both of the following has occurred:
o Another process is accessing the specified disk.
o You have not logged on with sufficient privilege to format
the disk.
ACTION: Do one or both of the following and retry the command:
o End the other process or wait until it is complete.
o Log on with sufficient privilege.
..Now at this time this is the only HD.
Next I connect the same disk as a slave to a drive that
has OS/2 already installed.
Strangely enought the same error message is returned.
By the way I have tried the installation (fdisk and format)
using the standard IDE drivers and the updated ones.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this weird problem?
This is ONLY a 3GB IDE drive, with NO other partitions on
it.
Any suggestions?

This so that I can copy some data from a CD produced under Linux onto my hard

Why are the VIA's worse? (Is that bit about not supporting >8GB drives
true?)
I used to run DANIS506, I now run VIA drivers with no problem. Sysbench
reports negligible difference between the two.
Of the 2, I found VIA easier to setup. It just adds 2 extra lines for
drivers in the CONFIG.SYS. DANIS506 required just 1 line, but a whole
whack of switches (which may be a good thing if you want to tweak
settings).
I haven't had any reliability problems (that I know of) on either one.

I haven't tried it to/from Linux, but infozip seems to transport long file
names fairly well - if zipping and ftp is an option.

The /W switch only activates Joliet support, but not support for
Rockridge AFAIK. RSJ claims that their CD-Writer filesystem is also
capable of Rockridge support, but I've never tried to read such a CD
using it and never found any TRANS.TBL files on the CDs that I made
myself. Download the demo-version and see yourself.

JFS (in Warp Server for e-business) and the TVFS (Toronto Virtual File

IIRC, the "/W" switch enables the Microsoft "Joliet" lfn
extensions. I am not aware of any OS/2 software that handles the
Rock Ridge extensions used on linux CD's.

Dunno about JFS but TVFS does AFAIK not allow you to mount disk images
as file systems. Those are really two different things. (Check with 'man

Subj: CHKDSK failing on JFS partition
From: mc6530@mclink.it (Yuri Dario)
Hi,
yesterday I lost my JFS partition from my WarpServer for Ebusiness PC.
Now chkdsk is unable to restore the partition because it is quitting
during step 3
E:\>chkdsk F: /f
The current hard disk drive is: F:
The type of file system for the disk is JFS.
The JFS file system program has been started.
CHKDSK Block size in bytes: 4096
CHKDSK File system size in blocks: 1048233
CHKDSK *Phase 0 - Replay Journal Log
CHKDSK *Phase 1 - Check Blocks, Files/Directories, and Directory
Entries
CHKDSK *Phase 2 - Count Links
CHKDSK *Phase 3 - Rescan for Duplicate Blocks and Verify Directory
Tree
....|....
E:\>
I were using the JFS.IFS fixed when the partition got corrupted. I
tried also using the old JFS.IFS but it has the same problem.
The partition data should be still good, because steps 1 and 2 can be
completed.
My pc is a dual P3/450, 256MB, supermicro P6DBU with IBM 9.1scsi U2W.
I need some help to reset the dirty flag on JFS, because I need to
extract at least a few missing files from tapes.
Can you help me?
Bye,
Yuri Dario

Michael,
It could be that when you created the Extended partition with your Win95B,
the partition was made a "Type 0F". This is a partition type that OS/2
does not recognize. (The OS/2 counterpart is a "Type 05" partition.) The
Extended partition is like a container for the Logical partitions you
create within the Extended partitions boundry. When you tried to delete
the Logical partition using Warps FDISK you didn't go far enough. To have
Warp FDISK to create new partitions you have to first delete the Logical
partitions (which you did), AND the Extended partition. After that you
should be able to create first a new Extended partition and the further
divide this into several Logical partitions.
As you probably know, in order to install Warp to a Logical partition you
have to first install Boot Manager. Boot Manager have to be installed in a
Primary partition on the first physical hard disk in your system.
Don't worry about you present C: partition. FDISK will not touch it if you
don't tell it to. It will remain as is.

I find Dani's drivers are more reliable than VIA's because Dani's let you
specify the (U)DMA and the PIO mode. Per Dani's advice, I specify UDMA 2 and
PIO 0. Any other PIO tends to cause minor corruption to the desktop, even
with
the VIA drivers. If I remember correctly, the PIO mode has better error
checking and is only used at startup and shutdown.
The VIA drivers do however identify the IDE chipset on my FIC 503a MB as a 686
while the DaniS506 identifies it as a 571, which may be technically correct.

Subj: using cdrecord/2 in DAO-mode to write audio cd
From: Andreas Bertram <uzs993@uni-bonn.de>
Hi,
anybody here who can tell me how to simply burn an audio cd by given
WAV-files in DAO mode using cdrecord/2?
The current versions provide some kind of DAO-support, but I'm not sure
how to use this. Especially I'd like to know if I need to convert the
WAV-files into something weird format (remove 44 bytes WAV-header?
byte-swap? red-book audio?) and how to control the gaps between the
tracks (e.g. I'd like to have a 2sec pregap before each of the tracks -
except the first, of course). To make it easy, each WAV should be a
track.
Unfortunately RSJ (I bought this one long time ago) refuses to include
DAO-support, and somebody started the port of CDRDAO, but it's been
quite some time scince I read from him... so my only hope left is
cdrecord/2.
Well, a DAO-DOS-port to OS/2 would be perfect, but the author of
DAODOS/CDRWIN (Goldenhawk Software) is not interested in doing this...
I also did not succeed in making 1:1 copies of audio-cds. readcd.exe
always fails after a second of work.
btw: I'm using a Philips CDD2600. Writing Audio-CDs in TAO is not
acceptable, scince there's no pregap-control, and there are audible
clicks between the tracks.

I thought the same... till I tried the VIA-drivers.
The WPS-hangs and crashs I occasionally encountered (using DANIS) now
have disappeared. System runs rock-stable now.
Maybe the DANIS-drivers version I tried had some bugs left (gamma7, more
recent versions did not boot at all with my computer), but right now I
have an uptime of more than 10 days - ViA drivers work well for me...
and never change a running system.
Hmm, guess I should give the new 1.0.11 DANIS a try and compare its
performance to the VIA-drivers throughput - what measuring tool should I
use for this task?

The problem (good part) of DANIS506 drivers is that you can specify the
DMA and PIO modes. Which of course, means that if you get it _wrong_ you
may experience some of the problems you described. On the flip side, you
can choose exactly what you want.
The VIA drivers, on the other hand, are a brain-dead install. There's
nothing to goof up.
I used sysbench to measure the performance. The VIA and DANIS506 are
nearly identical, except for 1 measure. I think the author of sysbench had
mentioned that 1 measure was basically negligible for real world
performance.

Try using different versions of UJFS.DLL (I think that's the name.)
That's where all of the JFS CHKDSK code resides, I think. BTW, I have a
system that's identical to yours, except that I only have 1 processor in
it, and I'm trying to decide if I should add another one. Does SMP work
well on it? Is it noticably faster than a single processor system?

It may be too late, but you might try the updated JFS which you
can download from
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4.5warp/
This is claimed to fix some serious problems in WSEB JFS.

ok, but where can I get such file? it is not included with the JFS fix
that IBM posted a couple of months ago.

noticably faster when you run multiple process that needs a lot of
CPU. Otherwise for standard work it didn't make a great difference:
but before I was running a single P200, so now I have got an
incredible cpu power and I can't compare then properly.

I think I am tempted for an HP drive (yeap, 3 years warranty sounds

I would love to SEE the HP drive before purchasing it. A few years ago, I
would have heartily agreed with you. However, lately HP products have been
of lower and lower quality in my opinion. I have very little good to say
about the 600 and 700 and even some of the 800 series deskjet printers
from a quality or reliability standpoint for other than home use. Ditto
for the newer scanners, they just don't seem to be as solid as the Scanjet
2,3, and 4 family.
Moreover, some HP branded hardware is not of HP manufacture. They farm out
the work to a third party and allow their name to be put on the product.
If, in fact, this is true of the tape drives, perhaps buying the same
drive branded by the real manufacturer will get you the same drive for
less money. Then you can decide whether the price premium for the HP brand
name is worth any extra warranty period.
While it likely would be penny wise and pound foolish to purchase a drive
from Indelible Blue here in the USA, their website www.indelible-blue will
let you see what tape drives they are selling. A note to technical support
there will be answered and truth will be told as to the real manufacturer
of the various offerings if you ask.
If time is of the essence and you don't wish to wait until next week,
email me back and I will call I-B today before 2100 your time.

Good old intelible-blue. I went to have a look as you mentioned it and
it has apparently about 750 items that come under storage devices (and
goes on and on and on ...)
Choosing to use OS/2 I am well aware that choice is very limited. I
have to buy a drive that is likely to have drivers and if I have a
problem I know any backup software company will not want to know (how
many owners has Sytos had?). If I was using M$ NT that could be
different. Thus the choice for Sony or HP. My existing 3 drives are
WangDats.
For this weekend I shall not be purchasing anything. I still have a
4-8Gb to keep me busy. I have to move the data between two servers and
then two RAID arrays. I will now go back to look at Sony again. Thanks
for the tip for indellible blue but purchasing from the US it is not as
easy, especially when you work for a public body like a University.

Well I have a VIA chipset (MVP3) and a 9.1 GB drive (one
partition). Works fine with IBM1S506.
Actually, my system ONLY works with IBM1S506. With VIA's drivers
I get frequent system hangs and with DANIS506 I get
(depending on the version) anything from frequent hangs
to TRAPs at boot to some SERIOUS hard disk corruption.
Same result with all transfer modes and even /MGAFIX
(yes, I have a Matrox card).
Actually, with the latest beta I get a TRAP at boot and
the result is that both my 6.5 & 9.1 GB Medalist Pro's
are so messed up that CHKDSK claims they aren't
even HPFS formatted. Trying to access the drive just
hangs the machine with "error reading spare block" or
something like that.
DANIS506 never worked on my previous intel TX
chipset system either. Everything else on my
computer has changed but my two hard drives -
maybe there's some weird incompatibility between
Dani's and those, although I suspect my
Adaptec SCSI card may have something to do with
the traps and the current version of Dani's.
Well, to make matters interesting, my OTHER
computer with VIA VPX chipset ONLY works reliably
with DANIS506. With IBM1S506 the hard drive
(Medalist Pro 2.5 GB) corrupts data all the
time (for example, copying a large file to
another name and then comparing them shows
them to be different!). This problem was related
to my computer's/Seagate's inability to correctly
handle DMA transfers.
Go figure. :)
