Subj: SB16 WavEffects installed okay, but what's with the winos2 error?
From: "Lowell O. Turner" <lturner3@gmu.edu>
Hello,
A few months ago I was able to pick up a SB16 WavEffects for ~$25 from
the local computer superstore closeout/returns pile. The install went
flawlessly (aside from the fact that the PnP mgr took the modem's IRQ5
and gave it IRQ10) and with a few adjustments to the config.sys device
line, I was in business. I used the winstall.cmd utility to set up the
WinOS/2 part of the install. Now, whenever I start up a windoze app, I
get an os2 error window saying "Sound Blaster 16 ERROR Incorrect
MIDIPORT Setting in the SYSTEM.INI File [ok]". I have a MIDI
synthesizer. However, it will probably be at least another seven months
before I will ever have time to connect it to this machine. I mention
this because I have no other problem with the system. I can play CDs,
*.mid and other sound files from winos2. I just don't want to have to
put up with this annoying dialog every time I run a windows app.
The instruction manual (for win 3.1 installation) mentions that two
files should be in the system.ini [boot] section, mmsystem.dll &
msmixmgr.dll. Instead, the files mmsystem.dll & winmm16.dll are there.
It calls for two devices in the [386enh] section, vsbpd.386 which is
there, and vsbawe.386 which isn't. I don't know if this has anything to
do with anything, but I thought I'd provide the information just in
case. I have already fiddled with the "MIDIport=" setting to no avail,
the error message remains.
Any help, pointers, suggestions, constructive comments would be
greatly appreciated.

Above each of the lines in this excerpt are the gory details of the

Maybe this selective recovery is foiled by network cards. Haven't there
been numerous reports of challenges to OS/2 presented by some network
cards?

From: nate@lcs.mit.edu (Nathan Liskov)
If I open mmos2>sounds and double click on a .mid file, I get sound.
It is at a much lower volume than the .wav sounds and I must turn up
the volume to hear it. My readme also says that midi is not
supported. I am using fixpak 12 on warp 4.
On the other hand, I have not got sound in winos2 working. Control
panel > sound > test reports "cannot play the selected sound". I'm
not sure why as control panel>drivers reports both crystal drivers are
installed. Also I cannot play an mp3 file under os2. Z (dink's mp
player) reports
"mci error 5134: no device driver found". Any suggestions?

What are your config.sys lines for this setup. I have been
using a proprietary setup until now, but just received this
new card, and would like to set it up without doing a full

Harry,
I believe you're seeing what you're seeing... I just wish I could
make some sense of it. (;-)
>Maybe this selective recovery is foiled by network cards. Haven't there
>been numerous reports of challenges to OS/2 presented by some network
>cards?
The only NIC-related problem I remember was with the OS/2 hardware
detection software "probing" address 0x300 for (IIRC) CDROMs and
managing to mess up some NE2000 clones so badly the system would lock up
hard. As far as I know all that affected was the _choice_ of driver to
be installed, not the specifics of how that driver worked after it was
loaded.
Is there anything helpful in the RMVIEW /D output surrounding its IRQ15
entry? I can come up with a few ideas of what might be happening (but
nothing I'd care to be quoted on (;-)):
1) The ROM BIOS probe is detecting the use of IRQ15 but isn't sure how
it gets used.
2) Card has Shrug'n'Pray support and _that_ is being detected by that
probe.
3) The SYMBIOS driver reports its IRQ use to RM (Resource Manager) but
not its name (???).
4) IBM1S506 checks both IRQ14 and IRQ15 and gets responses back for
both... then realizes that only the first IDE channel is "active".
And I'm sure others can come up with even more ideas. Bottom line is, I
just don't know.
Sorry... anyone else?

This is not any indication of the seriousness of the problems.
Frankly speaking, I was suspected that Y2000 issues addressed by IBM
have any significance for *anybody*, and so far whatever I've heard
kinda confirms this. IBM had some obligations to address some bugs in
OS/2, and it probably did. But do not worry, there are thousands of
other bugs waiting to bite you... ;-)
> I agree, the

No changes to OS will help if it is an *application* what is breaking...
I do not consciously use any *applet* provided by IBM (well, I use the
Launchpad of WPS, but not the rest of WPS). This basically means that
if the core functions correctly, and if the hardware functions
correctly, (two BIG ifs) then I'm pretty safe. Still thinking about
it...
Thanks for your delibirations,

This is an odd problem... I'm able to do cd-da access via scsi drives without
problems. I'm using a Toshiba 6201, scsi, x32, Yamaha 4416s and an old Adaptec

Actually some of the grabbers I tried (can't remember which ones) even
said the drive does not CD-DA. Of the others, one grabbed 44 bytes, and
one grabbed what looked like the whole track, except that it was all zeros
(a flat line of silence.)

Good suggestion; this seems to work. Now I have to wade through pages of
options... The manual does not seem to indicate the defaults for any of
the options! (The manual mentions the Makefile, but it does not seem to be
there.)

There isn't anything that can be modified in config.sys, is there? The
device drivers for the CD don't seem to take optional arguments except for
the /W.

I've had a similar problem with Yamaha CD-4416S, Teac 532S and an IDE
CD-ROM drive. leech and about 3 other common grabbers report the drives
support CD-DA but give repeated read errors and won't grab anything.
Using cdda2wav works for me. I got it from the cdrecord package (I think

Actually, the point is to have my windows aplications that use/manipulate
sound be allowed to do so. An important use would be for MATLAB and using
the sound card as an input device for my digital signal processing
experiments (I am "still" an engineering student), and other such sound
related applications.
Mostly, I'd like to get rid of the error when winos2 starts. I misspoke
in my previous post. Once this windows error shows up, os2 system sounds
stop. only a reboot seems to bring them back.

all the G400 drivers loaded correctly. Everything works fine, but the movie
player won't play anything but the sound. I'm running Warp 4 with the latest
fixpack and upgrades.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Play with your DIVE/EnDIVE settings in the Matrox control panel and see
if it helps. If it is enabled, try disabling EnDIVE. Also, if you're
running 16.7 million colors, try switching down to 64K.

Subj: truespectra graphics removed default viewer association..
From: bruno schwander <bruno.schwander@technologist.com>
I committed the error of installing truespectra graphics, and it added
associations for its supported bitmap formats.
Since I want the default os/2 viewer to be invoked when I double click
on a bitmap file, I went in the parameters of truespectra program object
and removed all those associations.
The problem I have now, is that although all my gif, tif, targa, etc
files are still associated with the default viewer, and it is the only
option showing in the "open" menu item of the context menu, it doesn't
have the little bullet marking it as the default handler, so when I
double-click on the file all I get is the properties notebook !
How can I make the default viewer active again ? I can go in each file
and change it in the menu tab, but this is not a solution, furthermore
every new graphic file created has the same problem..
Any suggestions ?

I have a SB16 IDE with OS2 Warp 3 fixpak 40
and since dayone have never been able to get the IDE to work.
And believe me, I have tried everything!
Config.sys (IDE sets) IRQs changes and different software
installs for SB16
So I went out bought a Promise IDE Super Controller
disabled IDE and Joy on SB16 and now everything is just fine.
If you get IDE to work on Card...tell me how?

Can't help you with the money part, but from comments on the newsgroups,
you have the name of the best one already. I have seen mention of others,
including Easy CD but don't know much else about them. Gear at one time
had an OS/2 version but I think they dropped it a year or so back.

If you use IDE, your choice is Windoze or RSJ.
RSJ has been worth every penny I paid. My Windoz friends ask me to copy
CDs because it is fast and works correctly.

See if you have a file called \OS2\SETDEFV.CMD on your system; I think it
appeared in one of the early Warp 4 fixpaks. I believe you can use this
command file to do just want you want -- reset the default view for a
whole class of objects. Just run that command file in an OS/2 Window and
it will print out the details on how to use it. (Note: I've not used this
script myself!)

Has anyone out there managed to get OS/2 Warp 3 working correctly with
the Sound Blaster 16bit Plug'n'Play sound card?
I keep running into trouble with the drivers not being able to wake up
the card.
I've downloaded the latest drivers, and they don't seem to work whether I
enable or dissable PnP. The only way to make things work is to go to a
DOS box run CTCM.EXE, and then reboot the system. This seems to have the
effect of waking up the card. It's an irritating process though.

Do you mean enable or disable PnP on the card or in the driver?
Also, what FixPack level is this system at?

Hmmm... Maybe you can add (where "x" is your boot drive letter):
run=start x:\setupsb.bat
(setupsb.bat would run CTCM.EXE and then exit)
to your config.sys before the SB drivers load...
This may or may not work... Shouldn't hurt to try! ;)

Subj: Sound card suggestion
From: dbongo@ibm.net
I looking into getting a new computer, and wanted some help with picking
out a sound card. I'm currently using a SB16 PnP, and I'm reasonably happy
with it.
I don't want to spend a lot, and I don't really need a lot. The big things
I need are joystick support, sound in a DOS box, and the ability to play MIDI
files
with SB16-quality MIDI synthesis.
Why do I want weak FM synthesis when I could get better quality sound?
Simple.
It just sounds SO bad, it's entertaining. Listening to MIDI versions of songs
you
know can be quite...interesting.
Anyways, I would love to have great MIDI playback, with the ability to listen
to
cheezy MIDI whenever the mood hits. If there's a way to fake the low-grade
MIDI (ala MIDIWAV, only working to reduce sound quality, rather than increase
it) under any OS (I don't mind using Windows or DOS to do this) I'd like to
know
about it.
I think that about covers it. I'm confident an ISA card would work fine with
the
DOS box concern, but if a PCI card could do the trick, I'd consider it. Also,
I want
compatability with Windows and Linux (and BeOS, if possible, but Be isn't a
great concern right now). And cost if an issue. While I'd love to escape for
$20,
I'll pay more if there is a convincing reason to.
Thanks in advance.
