  16.     Can anybody help me with this problem? I have an IBM ThinkPad 600 E
  17. with a NeoMagic 256 AV video controller (I am using the latest
  18. OS/2-drivers from IBM).  I'm having trouble running certain games in
  19. OS/2, for example Entrepeneur  and B.U.G.S. The screen colors are very
  20. funny, almost like a color negative. I have been advised to perform an
  21. operation similar to turning off EnDIVE (Matrox), but how do I do this
  22. on my machine?
  23.  
  24.     Any help would be deeply appreciated.

  52. blinking cursor when PM is supposed
  53. to start. (after the 21 day usage SDD notification)

  55. Warp Server installed the GRADD MGA drivers by default (which work). I
  56. even tried
  57. resetting the video driver to VGA and reinstall the SDD drivers, but 
  58. it makes no difference.

  60. Any ideas what went wrong?

  103. At least it can not be a general problem with Warp Server, I have Warp Server
  104. and a Permedia 2 chipset and everything is working well.

  143. It's possible that the display driver for your chipset is very bad, I
  144. recommend to try the new display doctor for OS/2 from SciTech Software. DIVE
  145. and EnDIVE support will be included in the final release. And because IBM
  146. licensed this product you don't have to pay for the light version, I think
  147. this is great for you :-) Check http://www.scitechsoft.com and download the
  148. betaversion of the driver.

  231. I'm using Warp 4 with the Millenium II and had similar troubles with the SDD
  232. driver. Back to MGA Gradd 80 ... It seems to be the most stable driver yet.
  233. SDD is an amazing piece of software though.

  272. IBM just licensed those drivers, so the basic ones will be available for

  425. I'm sure SDD/2 would work, but you could try the
  426. 3.16 version drivers from www.s3.com for that chipset.
  427. I've been using them for at least a year with a 2mb
  428. card with the same chipset with no problems at all.

  447. About updating the bios, I tried it but when the utility runs it seems
  448. to return REALLY fast and with no feedback.  Like most companies there's
  449. almost no information on doing the update on os/2 but I did track
  450. down how to do it in NT at:

  454. the NT info was useful because NT has the same problem with
  455. the patch method as os/2:  since it's protected mode you have
  456. to use a boot disk and NTFS can't be read by a simple dos boot floppy.

  459. bios UPDBIOS util to say something more
  460. Like the NT instructions say:

  471. How can I verify the bios was actually updated on the card?
  472. Maybe some bios version string will flash up at boot time?

  474. Note, I did flip the bios write allow switch on my Matrox Millenium 4M.

  476. I got the dos boot disk by converting a ibm thinkpad bios update
  477. utility disk from the www.pc.ibm.com site/thinkpad/support area,
  478. they use ibm dos for that. (just needed to clean off the files 
  479. for that contained the thinkpad bios and update utility)
  480.  
  481. One thing I didn't follow the instructions on, I cleaned off all
  482. the other bios files except the 838-20, I figured that since all I 
  483. needed was the millenium one (838-20) why put the others on.
  484. Now I wonder if the others being gone confused the install
  485. utility?

  567. My system is using a 2 MB PCI Cirrus Logic GD-5440 SVGA adapter
  568. card, and an ISA MPA monochrome adapter card for the secondary monitor.

  570. I get a band of snow 3/4 wide along the left side of the screen, from
  571. top to bottom on the SVGA display.

  573. This happens on the desktop, seamless WINOS2, fullscreen PM programs,
  574. and DOS programs--ie it is always there.  I'd have to guess that this
  575. is a problem in the nucleus driver.
  576.  
  577. The previously reported problems with dual displays in DOS VDM's remain
  578. the same--probably due to deficiencies in the IBM gradd model.
  579.  
  580. It would be nice if IBM would take a look at this, and try to fix it since
  581. these, or similar problems, exist with every IBM, Cirrus Logic, or S3 driver
  582. I have tested except one, the Cirrus Logic GD-5430 driver in Warp 4 GA.

  726. From what I've read in this newsgroup, SDD/2  is based on the
  727. GRADD driver model.  But for the S3 Trio 64 V2 (775) chipset, a GRADD
  728. driver isn't necessary.  The S3 drivers for that chipset work well and
  729. fast at higher resolutions (such as the 1024x768x65k colors I'm using
  730. now).  I doubt SDD/2 will be much faster since this is a fairly
  731. low end chipset, but I could be wrong.

  733. Where SDD/2 has me interested is cards/chipsets for which there
  734. are no other hardware accelerated os/2 drivers (3dfx for example).

  741. It is a step forward, but I'm not sure if it would have helped much
  742. years ago.  Years ago support for OS/2 was somewhat more
  743. widespread among video card manufacturers  from what I remember
  744. (the mainstream companies were more interested when Warp 3 was
  745. introduced and being "advertised" (I use the word loosely *smile) to
  746. the home market and a fair number had somewhat up to date os/2 drivers
  747. on their web pages).  Also, the GRADD driver model wasn't available
  748. at that time, I'd guess it would have been much harder to program 
  749. universal drivers without it.
  750.  
  751. Now that most video card/chipset manufacturers are
  752. no longer interested in OS/2 (Matrox, S3, and ATI? being exceptions)
  753. having a third party produce drivers is a wonderful situation.
  754.

  844. Same problem here, altho I first tried to use the SciTech uninstall, which
  845. reverted me to the GRADD 
  846. drivers.  I can't use them because I get the dreaded trap in SINGLEQ$ on
  847. bootup every time I try.

  849. I then went tried the <ALT>-F3 thing, but it did nothing at all, and I still
  850. couldn't boot up.  I then resorted 
  851. to installing the VGA upgrade I keep on a floppy, and that worked. I then
  852. installed SDD Beta 6, which 
  853. served me well for 6 weeks or so that I used it.  I'll wait for the next beta!

  928. When I upgraded from 2.23.082 to 2.31.100 on my Warp 3 / Mystique 4MB 
  929. system, it did that only once, rebooting the whole system. The 
  930. subsequent boots didn't exhibit the problem.

  946. and can get 85 hertz on my system.  I also have the S3 Savage 4  PCI

  989. However, the 5430 does not have a "J2 jumper" on the board.

  991. Is this the cause of my problems? ie. the 5430 not having INTA enabled,
  992. would cause these "random" freezes?

  1200. to VGA then REM out the sddhelp.sys line in CONFIG.SYS afterwards.

  1243. I have very little knowledge of this "stuff"! - is INTA another way of
  1244. saying IRQ 10? or is it something completely different? BIOS allocates IRQ
  1245. 9 for the display, and "Rmview /da" shows a PCI device using IRQ 9, and
  1246. though it is not registered with OS/2 as the Video display, it, to my
  1247. mind, must be the one being used for this purpose. In, fact it is shown as
  1248. used for the Video in the "other" OS I have installed, on which I can't
  1249. really use any pgms, as the OS freezes almost immediately when attempting
  1250. to run any applicattion. 
  1251.  
  1252. I guess I will have just have to take a chance on  the Matrox AGP card...

  1274. ELSA Winner/2000 Office (Permedia II).  It worked, as long as I didn't
  1275. ever try to open a DOS or Win/OS2 session.  C-A-D time.

  1395.    I don't think that is the problem, as long as the card is
  1396. configured in the BIOS.  What may be the problem other tan a
  1397. possible NFG card, is that you have not installed the correct
  1398. drivers correctly, which is similar to the instructions below:
  1399.  
  1400. Here are 10 easy {:-) steps for installing the updated CL GD542X
  1401. (k542x-d3.zip) drivers for seamless, fresh, trouble free performance.  I
  1402. spent a lot of time figuring this out (>10 hours), as I initially (Dec
  1403. 93) had many problems (2theMax VESA LB card drivers).
  1404. Note: While not all these steps may be essential for the new drivers, they
  1405. remain the most sure way to ensure correct installation. Read the
  1406. 'clinst21.txt' file in the unzipped 'k542x-d3.zip' file.
  1407.  
  1408.         1. Relax, this will take a while
  1409.         2. From the Cirrus drivers discs, copy 'CLMODE.EXE' to 'c:\'
  1410.         3. (a) download and unzip the latest (mine were: k542x-d3.zip

  1412.            (b) READ (Install from the hard drive:) in the 'clinst21.txt'

  1422.                then DSPINSTL the  'Display Driver Install' Program.
  1423.            (b) Select under the 'Primary Display', the 'Cirrus Logic 542x
  1424.                Blitter Driver'.
  1425.            (c) Select 'Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program'.
  1426.            (d) Enter the 'Monitor Configuration / Selection
  1427.                Utility Location' as  C:\CLMODE.EXE  m7 ( or what your
  1428.                monitor type is), wait for the monitor configuration check.
  1429.            (e) Select your preferred resolution.
  1430.            (f) Finally, specify the 'Source Directory' by sequentially

  1504. 1. Confirming the rest of adapters are solely PCI and how they are jumpered
  1505. and/or whether any legacy resources have been disabled in Bios ?
  1506. 2. Whether moving Video card to top(priority) slot(or conversely the
  1507. bottom,g>) makes any difference?
  1508. 3. Perhaps outputting results of RMVIEW?
  1509. 4. Whether either setting H/W detection off in HW Mgr properties or selecting
  1510. "use previous" after successful boot works subsequently?
  1511. 5. Whether PnP is disabled in Bios?
  1512. 6. Using ALT + F2 at white OS/2 blob after which driver does system freeze?
  1513. 7. Whether you used CHECKINI (or equivalent) in case system is stalling prior
  1514. to loading WPS and not just specifically video related initialising the
  1515. desktop?

  1517. The possibilities seem to include whether system is freezing due to resource
  1518. conflict  or due to driver/desktop issue?
  1519. While you may have good reasons not to automatically apply a FP and the
  1520. symptoms don't appear to support the old WarpCenter timing/race problem with
  1521. GA can you temporarily(if not already done) remove any
  1522. WARPCENTER,LAUNCHPAD,PROGRAMS and CONNECTIONS from AUTOSTART stanza (leaving
  1523. FOLDERS,TASKLIST) and also confirm SET RESTARTOBJECTS=NO is in config.sys?
  1524. While I can't say personally whether the video driver level  (or res x color
  1525. depth) is pertinent at this stage it might help posting these details for
  1526. others with similar h/w to compare?
  1527. Depending on level of your desktop customisation and integrity of any Desktop
  1528. Archives then restoring to either VGA and/or original install desktop might
  1529. be necessary at some time- if nothing else just to preclude the possibility
  1530. of unrepairable INI corruption?
  1531.  
  1532. Whether INTA refers to address groupings or edge v level sensing hopefully
  1533. others can  confirm or correct.
  1534.  
  1535. I might be tempted to also suggest d/l the newer CHKDSK(32 bit) from IBM
  1536. site(assuming it's still available) in lieu of later FP and running that from
  1537. boot/utility diskettes? But it's value rather depends on what FS you've
  1538. elected?
  1539.  
  1540. I doubt whether I can come up smelling of roses after pratting around in the
  1541. dungheap but it's at least refreshing to know at some people have a sense of
  1542. humour and are not too squeamish about handling organic fertilisers<vbg>....

  1748. Matrix G200.

  1750. Why?  The Riva os/2 drivers are stuck at 60hz for all modes! There's no
  1751. way I'm running my beautiful 21" Trinitron at 60hz!  The G200 pretty
  1752. much sucks for 3D games, but the OS/2 (and win9x/nt) 2D drivers are
  1753. top-notch.   Apparently the same os/2 driver is used for the G400.
  1754.  
  1755. Do not buy a TNT card if you plan on running OS/2 a lot.

  1851.   I echo the sentiments - I am a paid registered (non-user) of the software.
  1852. I will be trying the driver with my G400 (maybe).  But in items that tend to
  1853. be under development for OS2 normally get my registeration if it is within my
  1854. area of interest and could be useful.  I look at my investment as a small drop
  1855. in providing a measure of funding for a product that future releases will
  1856. result in a better product, and in this case, "free" availability of upgrades
  1857. and drivers for all of us and any new converts.

  1938. they'll probably come via IBM Software Choice after they GA and SC
  1939. becomes a fee paying only option at end of year....     :-(
  1940. It would be nice to be proved wrong and they become "freely"
  1941. dessiminated via say DDFP.
  1942. Apart from the "licensing" problems that gives IBM it also could
  1943. potentially "bend a lot of OS/2 users out of shape" that have already

  2013. But I'm also waiting eagerly for the Win98 AMD is sending
  2014. me as a replacement for my old Win95A cause it's not
  2015. working with AMD K6-II 400 MHz. So I don't need OS/2

  2017. well with the AGP card, I tell you. Right now I'm still
  2018. using my old P/100, ASUS TP4N PC with ELSA graphic card.

  2144. the Warp4 driver that comes with Warp - there is no Cirrus Logic driver

  2214. I searched for a later Cirrus Logic driver, but found out that they have
  2215. been transferred to ISD corp. Their site says that the CL-GD54M30 is NOT
  2216. supported for Warp4 - use the driver supplied with the OS. 
  2217.  I did download the Warp3/2.1 driver at the site, but I am leery of
  2218. applying a "back-level" driver - What do you recommend? - I have saved
  2219. your instructions  just in case.

  2222. instructrions above? and also why you think that they are not pertinent to
