A few things that you might miss:
your password must be all upper case and must be the same on os/2
and the NT servers (this one tripped me up for A WHILE).
if you didn't install file and print sharing (your connection to the
nt network) when you installed OS/2, there is a bug in selective
install for it that won't install it if *any* line in config.sys is
over 254(?don't remember the exact number here) chars. you might
want for format and reinstall OS/2 -- it's easier than mucking with
config.sys...
update the tcpip stack to the latest
update MPTS to w08423/w08424
w08610/w08620 are reportedly buggy (I had problems and backleveled)
you can get these at:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v4.0os2/latest/stack/
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/mpts/fixes/english-us
there may be some pre-requisite fixpaks for these listed in the
readmes...

I had the same problem with my Xircom modem and Compaq LTE5400
but then I found from the bios a setting to keep the PCMCIA slot
powered during suspend.
After selecting that the modem wakes up with the computer OK.

Any suggestions?
Would backleveling to 8620 -> 84xx help?

I have finally gotten this card to work - we'll see how well. The diskette
has an OS/2 driver RTSND.OS2 which is for Lanserver. The accompaning
RTL8139.NIF is rejected by MPTS. I simply borrowed the DLKFETI.NIF from the
older DFE-530TX card, renamed it RTL8139.nif and changed the DriverName in
the file to RTSND.os2. It works.

I worked once on a NT server based network with an OS/2 workstation, I was
able to change passwords by using the NET PASSWORD command with no problems.
Once logged-on to the LAN with your current password, issue the NET PASSWORD
command without parameters and follow the prompts.
Just one question, are you using NETBIOS or TCPBEUI? You would have to
change the protocol definition in MPTS if you are using TCPBEUI.

I presume that you are referring to the Realport Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56.
A very tidy solution, and according to Xircom, it also supports ISDN with an
adapter.
I already have their CM33 modem card and it works well. I would now
like to upgrade to the Realport Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56, but I can not
find anyone selling them here in Germany.
Does anyone know of an end user supplier, preferably in Europe?

Subj: Netscape WWW_RegisterProtocol doesn't work
From: lampsstgt@aol.com (Lamps stgt)
i am using dde to implement navigation support in my application. i used the
topic
WWW_RegisterProtocol (with protocol 'file').
After a filename was requested by netscape, i get a WM_DDE_INITIATE with topic
'WWW_OpenURL'. Then i send back WinDdeRespond(HwndNetscape, myHwnd,
myName,"WWW_OpenURL", &Context) and get a WM_DDE_TERMINATE (!).
But how can i get the requested filename? I'm missing
something like WM_DDE_REQUEST or WM_DDE_DATA.
The same behaviour when i'm using topic WWW_RegisterURLEcho - i get a
WM_DDE_INITIATE with topic 'WWW_URLEcho' but no data containing the URL.
what's wrong?
Thanks, Thomas

From: "Karl M. Beem" <karlbeem@mindspring.com>
The latest Peer FixPak is IP08412. When I install it, I lose the Shared
Resources and Network Connections object. Additionally when I run
Peerinst.exe, the OS/2 Peer folder is replaced by Lan Services File and
Print.. which has program objects for Lan Services Admin. (netgui.exe) and
Laninst.exe , neither of which exist. What's going on? The previous fixpak,
8407, does not do this. I have Warp 4 with FixPak11 nads MPTS8620.

Get a (2nd, 3rd, 4th? edition) copy of Client/Server Programming with
OS/2 by Orfali & Harkey. Read it from cover to cover, twice.
Get all the documentation from your vendor about DDE on these two rigs.
Read it over, twice.
Get all the documentation from your vendor about ArcNet on these two rigs.
Since these rigs run OS/2, the dangerous assumption is that this is
'supported'.. ArcNet is 'like' Ethernet, but not..
Contact other clients using these rigs, somebody else has useful
information about these issues.

Your vendor documentation will have to disclose the pipes the "NewSystem"
DDE Servers use, or you will hafta apply 'pstat' and guesswork.
Then you install the appropriate network components to export the pipes
across the LAN..

That's all you'll ever get. Intuit thought they were being clever, installing
a whole new TCP/IP stack, which of course won't work with Winos2.

Subj: LPRMON weirdness
From: Dr J A Gow <jag12@_nospam_le.ac.uk>
Hello,
I have a strange problem with LPRMON with which I wonder if anyone can
help. The setup involves a Linux based print server (I'd use WSeB if I
could afford it :) ) handling print requests from the Warp 4.0 box
(FP11, TCP/IP 4.1). Now, if I use LPRPORTD on the Warp box to provide
the network printing, all works just fine except for the fact that
LPRPORTD is just too darned slow. So I tried LPRMON, which is a *lot*
faster. However, there appeared to be a problem with this approach. I
can print from WinOS/2 sessions without problem, using a WinOS/2 driver.
However, if I print from an OS/2 printer object, or command line PRINT
command, it appears as though LPRMON does not actually stop spooling and
start printing. The output in the LPRMON window continues to state
'spooling: xxxx bytes" after the job
has disappeared from the printer driver job list, and xxxx is equal to
the
size of the job. Any further attempt to print to the driver results in
xxxx increasing by the size of the additional job, but the monitor
window continues to state 'spooling'. This never actually changes to
'printing' and no data is sent to the print server. As I stated before,
however, printing from a WinOS/2 session works fine using LPRMON. Any
ideas?
John.

Which is of course hardware I don't already have sitting around. The
key to this whole setup is that I have managed a useable second system
including a LAN using decent parts, all of which are free. It's a matter of
making this just work for her. I'm in industry, and this isn't how I'd go
about doing things for one of my corporate clients, mind you. I know better.
But I'm currently wearing my "home hacker" hat and threw this all together.

I'm very aware of traditional approaches to LAN architecture. I'm
supporting a number of NT and SCO networks. I just haven't had opportunity
to play with Warp Server in any configuration, so I'm not entirely sure what
it can do, and what the limitations are on doing so. I've been using OS/2
since about a month after 2.0 was released. I bought a '386 with 4M of ram
specifically to run 2.0, so I'm no stranger to the raw OS.
Okay, so here's a new question, now that I've installed as a PDC: can
I change the minimum allowed length of a password? It appears to be 5 right
now. I've dug through the .INI's I could find that seemed relevant, and the
error messages suggest that it may be administrator-configured. Any clues
where?

Not on Aurora Beta 1. Warp 4 was just fine with the DASD
replacements and/or servicepacks that introduced that functionality.

That simple problem is solved here with a two-port autosensing parallel
printer sharing widget (hardware) that allows her machine OR the server to
access the laser..... - even if DOS were to be booted (it isn't). And
regardless of logon rights.

No - but you do have to LOGON to *something* to get the right to use most
of the "NET" commands. Basic security! A domain controller is simply
the functional equivalent of a master membership card which "clears" you
with the rest of the domain based on its tables of your rights. For years
prior to the concept it was necessary to log on (or in) to each server
separately.
BTW - I have both SCSI and ATAPI ZIP drives (except the combo par/SCSI)
working just fine under OS/2. Four of 'em, counting the portable for the
laptop.

Don't fight it. It is actually easier if you do it *AS IF* you WERE doing
it for a corporate client (within reason).
Example: No reason not to configure the (sole) server as a PDC. Cheap
and cheerful.

In many respects - almost identical to NT. They share similar GUI
toolsets that are not at all interchangeable, but accomplish similar
ends. Their NET XXXX commands, OTOH area about 80% identical.

I use a 4-char for some work - but do not recall ever having to change
anything to get it that short on EITHER PEER, WSONW4, or Aurora. Use the
OS/2 Warp Server GUI. If it is a chore, live with a 5 char PW.

OK., Aurora Beta (not GA) had a throroughly buggered IBM1S506.ADD, (among
other things),
which did not even respond correctly to tried-and-true command-tail
overrides.
I burned a corrected install CD for my use. The IBM1S506.ADD from W4 GA,
or (better yet) the one from IDEDASD will fix that. Have a care - Aurora
not only installs the wrong one from CD even if you have put the proper
one onto the install floppy, it puts another opy in the boot drive root,
AND it overwrites the fixed one.
To get around this, name the RIGHT one something else (I use OLDIDE.ADD)
so it is not overwritten. Interrupt the install, go to a command prompt,
delete the bad drivers written to X:\ (root - proper ones belong ONLY on
X:\OS2\BOOT), clean up the CONFIG.SYS, remove any NET START statements
from the STARTUP.CMD file, as Aurora can hang here (networking is only
HALF installed on the first go-round!). Finish the install, verify with
manual "NET START....." put them into your own STARTUP.CMD file - later!
Aurora is a good product. The "Pre-release" version, OTOH, was the
ugliest thing IBM have done since the hogs ate my little brother! Forgot
things they had learned a full year earlier!
More if you need it by e-mail.
Don't give up on it. It is 24X7Xall-year, virus/trojan proof once sorted.
YMMV!

try 'logon <id> /p<password> /v:local
Last I saw it works - and just in case you didn't specify an initial
user, that's 'userid' and 'password'.

I have file and print services installed on my two

Both machines have tcpip and netbios installed.
How do I set it up to share network drives?
I have configured the main machine with a shared drive and
I gave it the user for the second machine with a password.
Now, how do I get the second machine to see the main machine?

As is popular response: with a "real" modem,(not a 'winmodem') OS/2 has all
the "guts" necessary. THE AT command set is the AT command set.
Where you might run into trouble is what ever IRQ the PNP USR card selects
upon initialzation. Since IBM has YET? to produce a "Device Manager" type
of apparatus for those faithfull few of us OS/2 users, make liberal use of
the "RMVIEW" command to figure out what the USR card has "fallen upon" make
the appropriate adjustment to your <com.sys> statement in <config.sys>,
re-boot, salute three times towards REDMOND with the flying birdie, and
you're right as rain

Thanks Phillip, an OS/2 optimist was what I needed, and it sounds as though I
found one! The only optimism that the vendor shows begins with me purchasing
a new all encompasing "Win NT" system to replace both other systems, at a tune
of $400,000.00
How they can do this with a straight face, after having sold me the new system
less than 2 years ago, escapes me.
Thanks again, I'll give your suggestions a "whirl"

Hi John,
Seems alright to me. Well, do you print straight to LPT1 from WinOS/2
or do you use LPT1.OS2?
If you use LPT1 than you might have a problem with your OS/2 printer
driver since WinOS/2 is printing straight to the mapped LPT1.
Please check your TCP/IP settings, page Printing. Diasable/erase all
printing setting and stop the LPRD from auto-starting.
Check your TCPSTART.CMD for rem-ming LPRD and your CONFIG.SYS for any
SET PRINT... statements.
Now reboot and see if it works now.

Your mileage may indeed vary...
A manual switch could be potentially both cheaper and arguably more
bullet proof.
The latter possibly being an issue if the "polling"/sensing technique of
the autoswitch combined with the specific polling technique employed
with whatever PRINTx.SYS and (/IRQ) parameter you had employed,
unfortunately introduced the "switching window" problem that was typical
of OS/2 and this sort of setup in days past.......
Perhaps improvements in switching/sensing techniques together with
enhanced PRINTing subsystem drivers has virtually eliminated this
problem..... and no doubt from a mechanical only perspective a solid
state switch would undoubtedly be more reliable long term.
But unless there is no significant delta in cost or prolific printing
and/or relative positions of both users to the printer requires
automated switching then a simpler manual switch would minimise the
chance of this occurrence and simplify the diagnostic techniques to
resolve any future problem.
Of course as most(all?) autoswitches have a manual override capability
anyway, I guess the point is probably mute.

Subj: How can I connect 10Base2 and 10BaseT machines?
From: frank_mckenney@mindspring.com (Frank McKenney)
I'm trying to hook a new machine into my current 10Base2 network, and
would appreciate hints, pointers, or appropriate search terms.
Current network:
- 'griffin': Linux (SuSE 5.3) on a 486DX4-100
EC-9400 (NE2000 clone) "combo" adapter: 10Base2, 10BaseT
- 'Office': OS/2 Warp4 on a Pentium(I) 100
EC-9400 adapter
- Cabling: 10Base2 (coax)
This works fine so far. I can run XFree86 as an X Server under OS/2 and
run X apps on 'griffin', the Linux box. I can ftp both ways with no
problems.
But... here's where it gets tricky. I want to attach a new machine, a
"loaner" HP SomethingOrOther of fairly recent vintage to the network.
Naturally, the HP's LAN adapter only has a 10Base[T] (twisted pair)
connector. What can I say? Murphy's visiting again (;-).
Ignoring the TCP/IP and NetBeui/TCPBeui configuration issues for the
moment (gotta save something for Murphy on his _next_ visit), is there
any way I can get the Ethernet hardware layer connection set up?
Possibilities:
1) A 10Base2-to-10BaseT "adapter". Does such a gadget exist, and if
so, is its price in a "reasonable" range (c. $20US)? I tried
AltaVista, but turned up too many false hits to continue. Seems
_lots_ of people talk about "adapter"s and 10BaseT and 10Base2 (;-).
2) Get a "crossover" cable and run it between the HP and the 10BaseT
connector on 'griffin's EC-9400. Will the adapter talk Ethernet out
of "both sides of its mouth", e.g. to both the 10Base2 AND the
10BaseT port?
3) Assuming my memory is still owrking properly, see if I can find what
might have been DB15-to-BNC connectors in my basement. If they turn
out to be "Thick" to "Thin" Ethernet adapters, see if I can hotwire
one into the adapter I need.
4) Install a 10Base2 ISA adapter in the HP, assuming the customer
doesn't have objections, and try to set up the appropriate device
driver wothout an NT Installation CD (the HP was "cloned" over the
customer's internal network). If I screw it up, well, the customer's
site is _only_ an hour's drive away... (;-)
Is there another possibility I'm overlooking here?
Is it possible that I can't do what I want the way I'd like to?
Comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Some cheap 10BaseT hubs also have a BNC on the back - a cheap 4-port
hub with BNC should be easy enough to locate if you can't find a
specific adapter.
I do have such an adapter, although its age and exact origin is
unknown. Looking at the case, it claims to be made by "Transition
Engineering Inc" and appears to have a part number of E-CX-TBT-03. No
idea whether the company still exists though.

You're using Warp 4? - it's a little different in Warp 3. From the task bar
go to the item called "connections" and open it using mouse button 2 - this
should give a tree view with folders called "Printers", "Network", "Drives"
and "Web sites". Open Network and then File and Client Resource Browser.
Finally double click on "Shared Resources and Connections" that opens a
properties style box and the connections are listed under the connections tab.

Will,
I had a similar problem with that card. It turned out it didn't like IRQ
11 which it got from the BIOS. After I enable my (unused) USB in the
BIOS, the
3Com card got IRQ 9 and it worked fine ever since. You can check which
IRQ is get by a PCI scanning utility, such as scanpci (hobbes), or most
BIOSs will display it shortly before they boot the OS.
Good luck, Mat

I also run this card, first with Aurora Beta, and now with the GA. I

not use the drivers that come with Aurora, so during installation of

Subj: NT logon to OS/2 warp server
From: James Moe <sma@spam-not.rtd.com>
Hello,
I'm trying this again. I placed a simialr post about a month ago and
got several usefule suggestions. While they furthered the endeavor,
there is no joy.
I installed winNT4 on one of our computers, one of a multi-boot set
(os/2 usually runs there). I got the Browser Enabler for the warp
server, the primary/client logon for NT. Individually the installations
went ok. I have verified that the Browser is loaded and, I presume,
running.
The NT system can see all the other stations in Network
Neighborhood. But cannot go any further.
Neither the primary logon nor the client logon have ever
successfully logged on to the server.
Other things I did:
- created a special account on Warp Server named NTUSER1, it and the
password are all uppercase (one of the suggestions) and less than 8
chars (another suggestion).
- Tried both netbios/tcpip and netbeui. Tried both protocols, and
singly.
- Created a corresponging account on the NT system (NTUSER1) that
matches exactly the account on the server.
The os/2 domain name is SOHNEN-MOE, which is the workgroup entry on
NT. Do you suppose the hyphen is a problem? Or too many characters for
NT?
The only thing I have not tried yet is re-installing NT. Some said
that is almost a necessity, which is rather sad.

We have numerous NT workstations that talk to our Warp Server no
problem. We didn't do anything special to make it work other than what
you have done (browser on the server and logon client on the
workstations). Our domain name is 8 characters (7 alpha 1 numeric). IMHO
there should be no reason to reinstall NT on your workstations. None of
our users ever did that!
Make sure you have NETBIOS bound to the NIC on the NT workstations. Make
sure the domain name is specified correctly for the logon client.

A better place for it, would be in the startup folder. That way
everything else is up and running before starting peer. Create a CMD
file with the command LOGON <USERID> /V:LOCAL /P:<PASSWORD>, and place
a shadow of the CMD file or a program object pointing to it in the
startup folder. Another way to create the object, is to make a copy
of the "Peer Workstation Logon" and plug the variables into it, and
then place a shadow of it in the startup folder.

There are a couple of methods. One is to use the "File and Print
Client Resource Browser" located in the Network folder. You can also
go to a command prompt and issue the NET VIEW command.

From: Falko Tesch <falko.tesch@bigfoot.com>
Hi,
After being bugged with some strange behaviour of my Win9x client I
finally found out what isthe cause. So I want to spread the wealth :o)
The network is a OS/2 WARP Server 4 / LAN Server 5 with the IBM
Neighbourhood Browser Enabler running.
The problems was that all the Win9x client were only randomly seeing
the network in their Network Neighbourhood folder.
I finally figured out that accessing a mapped network drive right away
when the Win9x desktop was coming (e.g. copying a file from a mapped
drive to a local one via a batch that was started in the AutoStart
folder) it could result in ?crashing? the browser.
Delaying this will result in a 100% availability of the Network
Neighbourhood Browsing!

challenge will be to connect my system with a Win95 machine & use it as a
file and print server, you may be hearing from me again in this newsgroup....
Thanks a bunch to "ralbers" and to Mat for their timely advice, I certainly
appreciate the help!

Subj: Register Warp Server Evaluation
From: "Clemens Pipek" <cleber>nospam<@ibm.net>
Hi all,
I have tried Warp Server evaluation. This version will stop working after
60 days, this is working well. Now i have purchased and licensed this
product. Is there any way to change the evaluation to a regular version
without a complete new installation (it is many work to setup all this
stuff). BTW the regular version has an extra CD with many tools, maybe
what i am looking for.
many thanks for help,
Clemens

Same card. CEM56-100, SN E194604 here. Had lots of discussions with
Xircom in 1997 to get them to write OS/2 drivers for it. They sent me two
betas in sucession.
I am still running the second beta, working fine in my Kapok (Canon OEM).
which uses a PCMCIA controller that emulates Intel. Had to update my
BIOS, as well as later PCMCIA card services from IBM. Also had to remove
a defective Megahertz PCMCIA card from one of the three slots in htis
machine, as it was adversely affecting all others.
The file in use is Xcemndis.os2 45,942 bytes dated Jan 7 1998. Be
interested to hear if you have a newer ne - or if you are trying to use
the one for the 10/100-only card (been tried - it will not work) or from
the earlier, slower combo card (it will not work either).
On loading the driver announces (in color), including ADDR & IRQ used.
-one can select shared IRQ or not, etc. in the MPTN .INI setup.
An e-mail to Xircom should get you the proper driver if you do not have
it. AFAIK, it was not / may still not be listed on their site.
Works fine as a 56K, also work very well as 10/100 BT, with some very high
scores for thruput (I use in forced 100, forced FDX).

Thisful winking. The Xircom works quite well under NT also.
But Xircom or no, it is no contest. OS/2 has been close-as-dammit to a
consistent 40% faster on ONE CPU here as NT on TWO, over more than one MB
and CPU generation - 2 X 90 thru 200 MHZ P54, 2 X 200 MHz PPro.
And WSA (W3 SMP kernel) or Aurora SMP blow NT clear out of the water. -
but that is a matter of historical record.
*SNIP*
Please e-mail me for the old drivers if all else fails, also kindly let me
know if Xircom give you newer ones!
Cheers!
