Keep trying. Symantec sent me the "Enterprise" CD for free
after I provided proof of ownership for IBMAV; they didn't even
charge me for shipping so I know it is possible.

Subj: Trap e on 3.0 FP 40.
From: Will Rose <cwr@cts.com>
I'm getting trap E's at 0168:FFF491D6 - 000E:C1D6 on a pretty
regular basis, around once a day. It doesn't seem to tie in
to anything particular I'm doing; my guess is that either FP 40
blew something, or my machine's memory is going south. Anyone
have any ideas as to how I could locate the source of the problem?
(Apart from swapping out memory - I don't have any spare modules at
the moment).
Thanks - Will

Subj: Re: PCMCIA on a Dell Latitude CPi D233ST Laptop
From: mmhj@rocketmail.com
Much thanks for the advice. Tony.
The driver works great now on my Dell CPi 266XT. Actually the driver
page on Notebook/2 is a bit misleading which posted a URL pointed to a
SS2PCIC2.SYS other than 6-16-97. Only the one you mentioned works. No
need to use reserve.sys or apply FP. the PCMCIA.SYS comes with Warp 4
works just fine.
To save all others' time, you can get the SS2PCIC2.SYS dated 6-16-97
from here: ftp://ftp.uni-
leipzig.de/pub/os2/boulder/os2/os2ddpak/ss2pcic2.exe. Check out the
date before download.
BTW, the PSION DACOM 56K Modem is also a beauty.

I'd put better than even money on a memory problem, as a TRAP
E is a paging fault trap. It could be caused by anything in
your virtual memory, including RAM, L2 cache, or hard drive
swapper error. I would suggest an initial approach would be to
first reseat all the above mentioned components, and then try
isolating them individually if the problem persists.

Subj: OS/2 User "Enterprise" - Was "IBM Anti Virus"
From: askbill*AT*ibm.net
Fellow-travelers,
- methinks there is the germ here of an idea sound enough to save each of
us enough money to become self-sustaining:
In <SKfw30zmCGmZ-pn2-kSgGZJizkSJo@localhost>, on 09/10/99

I think this is a damn good idea, and certainly the most polite message
Bob has posted this week!

It need not be limited to IBMAV. Not by a long shot!
Are not one or more of the existing OS/2 user group / clubs already large
enough and well-organized enough to serve as a nucleus for such a venture?
>Perhaps BMT micro, or IB would take that on (IB
>already sells site licenses etc.).
Personally, I would not want to see either of these houses lose scarce
OS/2 business to a non-profit, nor would handling money or charge-cards
be less than a serious pain for a non-profit organization. Long-term they
need to stay healthy for the benefit of us all.
But how about a "hybrid"? The "enterprise" core being either an
expansion of an existing OS/2 user-group, or a new purpose-built one, that
in turn solicited volume-discounts on an open-bid basis? The "winning"
vendor on each case then taking direct orders against a look-up table of
members-in-good-standing so that the "club" did not have to handle charge
cards, etc. for individual purchases.
The USA, for one, has had a long (and, truthfully, mixed) history of
"shoppers clubs", etc. - but those of us who remain OS/2 users may be a
bit more motivated than most - especially as the "product" can be made
easily available over the 'net.
> After all, even IBM wouldn't buy more
>than one copy of the CD (well, they might, but they shouldn't), and

FWIW, IBM probably retained perpetual rights for internal use......

Now you are talking! Given even a 10% sign-up of OS/2 users, the "group"
would be larger than many of IBM's current clients. OTOH - it would
probably *spend* less (lacking RS-6000, AS-400, on-site support contracts,
etc.)
We SO/2 users are a frugal lot.
Countering that - many of the members are likely to be themselves
consultants, IS/IT professionals, or company executives with a bit of
peripheral clout. One would expect a buyers group to have a bit more
clout with IBM than a pure users group, simply because money is involved -
IBM's internal programming language of choice.
>I am sure that the technical details can be worked out (the legal

>people in the OS/2 community. (Then again, why limit this to just the
>OS/2 community, the more site licences we can get, the lower the cost
>should be, and the software is already on the CD).
The legal details are not difficult. There is a lot of precedence.
A not-for-profit coop or confederation of users/consultants/developers
might also be seen as having a more legitimate legal and business
rationale for existence than a pure buyers club. Goals might be simply to
further the spread and development of OS/2. Again - there are clubs with
a history who have the right sort of articles of incorporation, etc.
already up and running. Clone, anyone?
For our part, we are not based in the US, but could put a VAT-registered
UK / EC limited corporation OR a Hong Kong counterpart, at the service of
such an enterprise in about one week, and cheaply so.
Others, I am sure can do the same or better in the U.S.
>A great name for the company, would be "The Starship Enterprise", but I
>am sure that there would be legal problems with that <g>.
How about "The Enterprise Ship Star"? - presuming very fast downloads!
>Perhaps. we can use IBM's, and Symantec's, lack of cooperation to nail
>them to the wall <g>...
- Don't care about **them** being nailed to a wall. Life is too short,
etc.
- **Do** care about having __our backs to a wall__ if the decline in
software availability continues!
Most of what we do with OS/2 here simply CANNOT be done at all with NT,
and is painful with *NIX.

But we don't need a new Warp client, right? Line none of us will ever upgrade
a machine or
install Warp client on a new computer. Well, I guess that's what they're
hoping for.
Let's not even touch the fact that it will soon be as impossible to install
Warp on a
modern machine, with its primitive install boot disks, as to install DOS 1.0.

Yes, I've tried reseating. I suppose swapouts are the next step,
but I find it slightly odd that the trap is always in exactly the
same place, unless that's the page fault handler. I'm digging thro'
the debug kernel stuff to check that out, but not getting very far.

That's possible. The latest OMNI-driver from IBM, version 30.586, dated:

from

If the 720 is compatible with one of the older HP DeskJets, then you
could use that driver instead.
Hope that helps,

The 720 is not a real printer. It's a paper feeder and ink sprayer. The part
that
does the processing is contained in a Windows-based driver.
Maybe try an Epson instead. You'll pay the same, but get 1440 dpi instead of
300
dpi to boot.

See if Ghostscript supports this printer. This way you could print to a
postscript file and use Ghostscript to output the file to the printer.
If it is a windows only printer maybe there is a win 3.x driver that
runs under Winos2 as there is a Win 3.x Ghostscript.
Ghostscript can be found here:

Ah. I just read the specs for this printer. No native PCL support and no
Win 3.x either. You are out of luck on this one as even Ghostcript will
not work with it.

Maybe I'm too laid back or perhaps I just don't like lawyers but...
Symantec does not want our business so why not just give our bucks to
someone that does? Someone like pandasoftware?
The pooled money idea is a good one though but it would still mean
supporting a company that does not want your business.

What I have found is that the ORDER of the statements is important. What has
always worked for me is moving the NIC driver statements,
in your case:
DEVICE=D:\IBMCOM\MACS\KTC100.OS2
DEVICE=D:\IBMCOM\MACS\DLKFET.OS2
Move them to right AFTER this line in the config.sys as follows:
CALL=D:\OS2\CMD.EXE /Q /C D:\MPTN\BIN\MPTSTART.CMD >NUL
DEVICE=D:\IBMCOM\MACS\KTC100.OS2
DEVICE=D:\IBMCOM\MACS\DLKFET.OS2
Hope this helps,

It looks like it was just some Folder nodes that were
recovered. I have had that happen before, especially if they
had large EAs.

The idea has merit but also some problems. If done this way, it would be
very public and might arouse a suit against the enterprise, especially if
the enterprise also started selling Warp or tried to force IBM to update
Warp. Also, there are possible tax ramifications if it becomes successful.
With my basic idea, a small charitable non-profit corporation would be
much less likely to be the target of legal action by Symantec.
Also, an internet install of Warp would take a VERY long time on line.

Now the possibility of tax and legal ramifications really comes to the
fore. As far as NAV is concerned, a Microslop user needs pay less than $30
for his very own copy.

For sure that would cause trouble. How about GFYS, Inc. The S is for
Symantec, the rest you can figure out for yourself. <GRIN>

Two problems with this:
1. Those who want NAV and who didn't buy IBMAV are left out in the cold.
2. Those who did buy IBMAV years ago and cannot find the manual or
software are similarly out in the cold.
I fall into the second category. I used it for a couple of years before I
took down my BBS. I then felt it wasn't worth the overhead and stopped
using it. Then I moved my office and either discarded it along with
cartons (not boxes, big cartons) of "obsolete" software. Remember in the
good old days, programs came with real manuals frequently in slipcases. I
had multiple copies of every version of WordPerfect, Quatro Pro, DB2,
SuperKey, QEMM, Double DOS, PC-DOS 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, etc. I discarded 5
copies of OS/2 1.2, 5 of 1.3 enterprise, not to mention PCAnywhere,
Fastback Plus, Norton Utilities, etc., etc. Then there were the shareware
manuals for the BBS which filled more than 6 boxes which originally
contained 10 reams of paper each.
There is also the possibility that I gave the software to a former
son-in-law who worked for me at one time. He did get one of my OS/2 Warp 4
packages since I only needed 3 when I moved and owned 7 and was still
married to one of my daughters. We had six workstation machines and a
server at one time but now only run 4 with no server thanks to the
peer-to-peer networking of Lantastic which eliminated Novell (that I did
keep). If that's where it went, it's long gone since he's in prison.

when i use pmview some times while netscape is running... it rarely (if

Subj: Warp4 + PF11 + DDFP1 + TVFS = Nu shutdown
From: Sacha Prins <sprins@businessnet.net>
Hi,
Since installing FP11 and Device Driver FP1 on my Warp 4 system with
TVFS 2.11 I cannot properly shutdown my computer as long as TVCTL.EXE is
running. The shutdown procedure never ends and the message "please
wait..." will stay on my screen forerver. A hard reboot is then
required.
C-A-D behaves the same, i.e. no reeboot.
This seems like a problem between the latets fixes and TVFS. Before
aplpying the fixes all worked as it should.

Yes, there are problems, but I think the technical problems could be
overcome quite easily. One would need a password protected secure web
site (128 bit), and passwords on all of the products. Someone, like
BMT
micro, could sell the licenses, and supply the appropriate passwords
(just about what they are doing now). The actual download, and
install,
could use the CID method, after a user downloaded a basic set of
bootable diskettes, which would have enough code to get them connected
to the server.
There is a user

who indicates that he doesn't think the legal problems would be all
that bad. The other problem would be that IBM (for sure), and
Symantec,
would want a short list of "support" people who would be authorized to
talk to their support people, and who would support the rest of the
enterprise. This could be a problem, especially if multiple languages
are supported, which would be required for world wide support.
>Also, an internet install of Warp would take a VERY long time on
line.
It wouldn't be all that bad over a LAN connection, or with a cable
modem, but it would take forever at 28.8K. I suspect that the actual
OS/2 thing might be something that could happen in the future.
Starting
with NAV, to prove the technique and to set a precedent, would be the
way to go. Then working up to other things as the technology, and the
resources become available, would be a good idea. In fact, it might be
better to start with some other program(s), from friendly companies,
just to set the precedent.

Yes, it would be better if an OS/2 friendly company, who is already in
the software business, could do it, even for profit. The MUCH better
solution would be if Symantec (and IBM) would smarten up and just
supply their (supported) product on an individual basis.

We could call it Microsoft (again, legal problems), for all I care

As long as they support OS/2.

I haven't seen your symptoms, but there is a program that is supposed
to tell you what is happening during shutdown (Sorry, I don't remember
the details). You should be able to find it in the OS/2 supersite
files, somewhere. (http://www.os2ss.com)
Hope this helps...

I would like to thank everyone who offered help to get PCMCIA support
working on my Dell CPi D233ST laptop.
I had assumed that the driver IBM2SS14.SYS was the correct one for my

assigned resources to any cards inserted and the laptop would lockup
cold whenever a card was to be enabled.
Thanks to Tony Saucedo who provided me the original Beta 1 version of
the correct driver: SS2PCIC2.SYS 19,381 bytes.

Even though WDW has loads of bugs, this is not its fault.
* ALL * debuggers ( IPMD & ICSDEBUG from IBM; (pm)gdb from emx )
would behave the same. You need to go back to around FP6-level
pmmerge.dll
to fix this. I had this problem and the fix worked.
Are you listening, IBM ? Perhaps it's not too late to fix this in FP12 ?

I haven't been able to see the beginning of this thread, so maybe I've
missed something. Symantec has just announced it's going to include an
OS/2 client version in it's next release of the Norton AntiVirus program.
(I saw it in Focus on OS/2 ezine). Why is everybody pissed off at
Symantec? This sounds like a positive development.

Nope.

I found out that after killing TVCTL with either a killer or TVKILL then a
reboot works. So I have a workaround. I find it odd, but maybe it's the SCSI
device driver for my harddisk, or the bios, or I don't know what that is
causing this.

I'll search for 'shutdown' on Hobbes abnd other archives. That should do the
trick I think.

Factors to consider before coming to the above conclusion:

help

from the Workplace Shell)
- IBM ~may~ make a better driver

I have posted before (can't remember which e-mail address I used)
asking folks to share their LS-120 performance stats. No one
responded! But what you're experiencing sounds worse than what I have
here. Hard disk thrashing?
Right now, I use my SuperDisks for archiving by way of Rexx files.
This works nicely, and I'm glad I bought the LS-120! But accessing the
disks graphically IS a problem and a BUG and should be FIXED,
My LS-120 works well when viewed graphically in Wintendo. The way
Wintendo handles it involves some caching, and I suppose a better
driver strategy. Since the LS-120 is definitely a great drive to have
under Wintendo, I was thinking of writing a PM app to cache the
content of the disk and minimize reads/writes (or maybe put them on a
lower-priority thread). I work mostly in OS/2.
The problem with what I plan is that you'd have to access the
SuperDisk mostly through my app. Would that bother any of you?

Bill,
I beleive the problem is due to an MPTS fixpak being installed. Install
the original MPTS and peer, upgrade the peer, then upgrade the MPTS.

Hi,
I have installed NS 4.61 beta 2 at my work and it appears much better
than 4.04 . Now I'm trying to do the same at home, but there's no
response after clicking the 'accept' button below the license agreement.
Has the beta been removed? Is anyone else having this problem?

You could alos grab a copy of WATCHCAT and see/kill the application that isn't
allow the shutdown... you could go to a command line prompt and execute:

Not at all. As I said in my post, the disk is OK in a command line

Are you registered or just trying to register? I'm registered and used the
direct file address to go in.
http://www6.software.ibm.com/dl/net/priv/net46-ftpna?OS2EN46S.EXE
It took forever to get the connection. Netscape gave me a timeout on it
once.
But I finally got it started.

That's what I do now. With a process killer (or the TVFS supplied TVKILL) I
kill
the problematic app and then shutdown or reboot safely. A workable workaround.

Subj: DOS Super Calc 5.0
From: bigfig@inorbit.com (Gary Crossno)
I know this is not actually a bug (except to me <G>).
I have been running SC 5.0 in a dos window since I first
installed OS2 back at the 2.1 version. No problems at all.
I have 2 OS2 install/boot partitions (got to keep working if
somethings busts, you know). I just re-installed OS2 on one
of them and serviced it to the FP9 level and SC5 WILL NOT
RUN with this install. Still runs fine on the other install
and it is the same FP level and uses the same
Drive/Directory/EXE in both cases.
I use FileBar and usually execute from there but I wil
explain what happens with a plain vanilla DOS window.
Open the window
dr: (enter)
cd\sc5 (enter)
SC5
The cursor does an LF/CR and that's it, nothing else
happens. I use MEMSIZE and it shows the CPU load going to
42% and remaining at that load until I close the DOS window.
Memsize also shows the process count increasing by one when
I open the DOS window and then increasing by one again when
I try to start SC5. The active task count increases by one
when I open the DOS window but does not increase when I try
to start SC5.
I tried re-installing DOS to no avail. I have the SAME
settings when starting it from FileBar as I use when
starting it after booting from the other install.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment that a refresh of Warp4 would be
great (y2k out of the box would be real nice) its not necessary to
have a working or installable system.
The boot diskettes can be patched and will install on the very latest
machines.

Be real careful of Epson printers. Most modern types are windows
printers.
Also, having worked on many of them, I can tell you that all but the
most expensive are very badly constructed. If you -must- buy one,
make doubly sure you get the 3 year warranty option.

Haven't seen that anouncement. Hope it's true. We are pissed off
because it was not available, to the single OS/2 user, in the same
way as that it was available to the single <pick your op system,
except OS/2> user, on day ONE (which was also announced, when IBM
turned over the reins to Symantec).
So, do we "wait and see" (again), or do we take action to protect our
interests???
I always liked the IBM AV, it WORKED, and it did NOT impact the system
operation very much (most of the time, you couldn't tell it was doing
anything at all). I know that the Win98 version of NAV does impact
system operation, significantly more than the IBM AV does. I just hope
that NAV for OS/2 can step up to the standards set by IBM AV.

Whoops, something is fishy here! I use ICSDEBUG on a daily basis with
Warp 4, fp11 - and there are 6 of us in the group using as many
machines on the current app. I used WDW for the last 2 weeks (version
10a and 10.6 both) to debug both an old DOS app I maintain as well as
some OS/2 apps I wrote to test a port of that old code. All 3 worked
without a burp - the only problem I had was getting the right paths
set up for the DOS VDM to debug that but that happens every time I
fire it up again after a long layoff. I won't speak for IPMD under fp
11, but I had it up under fp10 about a month ago checking an older
version of current app and it also ran fine. ICSDEBUG is at the FP8
level.
I've seen a few posts about NT and AIX using VACPP 3.65 and VACPP 4
debuggers on news.software.ibm.com but I don't recall see ANY using
icsdebug from 3.0 under OS/2.
That said, there are some general video problems with certain video
cards and drivers ( particularly the GRADD drivers and some Matrox
cards) and the whole VACPP IDE - black icons, etc. - but this is the
first complaint I've seen about the IBM debuggers not working. I even
have Thesues/2 working with FP11, or at least not crashing it.

Well, the present release of NAV/2 takes longer to scan my system
than IBMAV did and sucks *a whole lot more* system resources
while it does so. But running it a 3AM when nobody's using the
system makes it a moot point.

Is that any help? Is your installation a completely new install on a

My install is gamma over beta 2. I deleted beta 1 before installing

So you installed beta 1, removed it, installed beta 2 and installed
gamma over the top of beta 2. And the proxy situation is sorted.
I guess it was sorted by the gamma then which makes me happier <g>.
I await the release code with anticipation.
Colin.
P.S. Any chance of making the release code default to a sensible font
so new users don't have to change it to sort out the 'missing text'
problem?

Subj: Trap000D when clicking drive icon or using DosQueryPathInfo
From: Wayne Hungridge <hungridg@rci.rutgers.edu>
After installing Fixpack 9 on Warp 4 in March, I began getting
Trap000D's when I clicked certain drive icons.
I found that DosQueryPathInfo with level 3 request (to get EA's) for
certain files triggered the same trap. Sometimes it happens on
'WP ROOT. SF', sometimes on a subdirectory.
As far as I can determine, errors occur in root directory
of HPFS partitions only.
Drives are on a server accessed by a client running Warp 4.
Server is running on Windows NT Server 4.0 (SP2),
using a version of PINBALL.SYS copied from NT 3.51 (SP2)
to access HPFS partitions.
I began sharing directories on the server around the same time
that I installed the fixpack so I'm not sure that the fixpack
is relevant. (Problem continues after installing fixpack 10.)
After reformatting the drive I noticed that the EA's of one
subdirectory were corrupted after accessing files in that
subdirectory from the client.
EAUTIL triggers the trap when I attempt to strip the EA's
from affected files or directories and Unimaint crashes
when I try to look at them. RD <dir> also triggers the
trap.
Any assistance will be most appreciated.
Wayne Hungridge

It appears that starting in FP7, the user.exe got "broke". If you install a
FixPak,
and then replace the User.EXE with the FP6 user.exe, then the seamless
stuff seems to start working again. If you aren't burned out on upgrading,
you might try that, and see if I am correct.

You have obviously tried installing FP10 since then. In any case,
the trap screen shows an access violation in HPFS:BYTE_COPY_BTXT. Mostly,
this happens due to corrupted fileystem stuctures (maybe from a bad shutdown
or something). Make a set of boot diskettes that includes chkdsk32 and run
chkdsk /f:2 on the affected drive and it should clean it up.

You can rename NS46DRAG.DLL to disable the new Drag/Drop in

We've since completely re-vamped the way the drag stuff works,

Subj: BASEDEV=RESERVE.SYS not working?
From: "James D Parker Jr." <jdparker@erols.com>
According to
http://www.diamondmm.com/products/faxback/communications/1331.html you
can use BASEDEV=RESERVE.SYS to force an IRQ to be used for a particular
device. I'm trying to get a Creative Modem Blaster V.90 DI5660 (plug n
play with no jumpers to set anything) to work in OS/2 and have not been
able to do that (see my thread in comp.os.os2.comm if you are
interested). One of the things I'm trying to do is get the device on
IRQ10. (Win98 assignes it COM4/IRQ10/2E8. I'm trying to replicate that
in OS/2 in the hopes that this will get it to work). I've tried:
BASEDEV=RESERVE.SYS /IRQ:3 /IRQ:5 /IRQ:9
With this the device gets assigned IRQ7. So I tried
BASEDEV=RESERVE.SYS /IRQ:3 /IRQ:5 /IRQ:7 /IRQ:9
Then bootup complained that it couldn't process PRINT01.SYS and the
modem didn't get assigned any IRQ. It had a truncated entry in the
RMVIEW report.
According to the above web page, the modem shouldn't get assigned IRQ7
because, to quote the web page, "(IRQ 7 gets blocked automatically by
the PRINT01.SYS line.)"
I have Warp 4 FP 39.
Any idea as to what is going on here? (Of course what I really want is
the modem to work in OS/2)
Thanks
Jim

This is something I was hoping to hear... I have missed the D'n'D
capabilitiies of the earliest Netscape versions, and I'll be pleased

Are you loading PRINT01.SYS before the modem driver?

I seriously doubt that anyone could load FP39 into Warp 4. More than
likely he has Warp 3 with Fixpack 39. I believe even more since his
statements in another message about Print01.sys automatically assigning
IRQ7 to LPT1. If memory serves this was TRUE about WARP 3 but it is
exactly the opposite for Warp which does not use IRQ7 for printing unless
forced to by a /IRQ appended to the Print01.sys statement in config.sys.

It appears that the original poster is using Warp 3. Print01.sys must have
IRQ7 in Warp 3 unlike Warp 4 which doesn't require ANY IRQ for Print01.sys
or printing for that matter. In fact, Warp 4 print01.sys requires a /IRQ
appended to the config.sys line to make it use IRQ rather than polling for
printing.

My instances of the SYS3175 only seem to occur only after opening INBOX

Yep, I'm sure. Try to print something on Epson printers from DOS (not
a dos box) - you cant.
Of course, there are a couple of 'true' printers in the range, but be
careful.

I'm just saying that you want to make sure you know what you're
buying. Make sure you're printer will print from true DOS, not a DOS
box. If it won't, its prolly a win printer. True enough, drivers do
exist for some win printers and can be used under OS/2, but system
load is heavy.

From 3Com regarding the 3CCM156 card, after both 3com and dell refusing to

" OS/2 Warp has Card and Socket Services (C&SS) drivers included with the

built in drivers is that to install them you only need to know how to open
your OS/2 System folder. "
"Yeah, right. The drivers for this pcmcia modem card on the dell inspiron

which I hope you will file for future customers. I will also post this in
the
appropriate news groups.
The *only* driver that I found to enable the 3com card in my inspiron 233
is an older beta version of an ibm driver, SS2PCIC2.SYS dated 6-16-97.
No other driver works, including newer versions of ss2pcic2.sys or the

device driver page (the newer one that is useless is there), but is
available at
ftp://ftp.uni-leipzig.de/pub/os2/boulder/os2/os2ddpak/ss2pcic2.exe
If another customer needs this driver, they can find it there or email me.
Or, if DELL and 3COM want to support their customers who don't ride the
DOS train, you could post the driver on your web sites."

Warp is assigning it IRQ3 and address 2E8. I've tried COM.SYS (n,2E8,3) and
SIO.SYS (n,2E8,3) for n = 2,3,4 without success. What I'm trying to do is
force the same configuration that works in Win98 to see if that will work.

From: "James D Parker Jr." <jdparker@erols.com>
I realize that RESERVE.SYS doesn't force anything. But the web page used the
term "force" in describing how to use RESERVE.SYS to persuade OS/2 to use a
resource that you wanted it to use.
This modem is not supposed to be a Win-modem. The documentation does not say
that is a Win-modem. However, the documentation does not say that it is not a
Win-modem either. I asked specifically for a "real" modem. The salesman called
it a plug and play "hardware" modem.
If what I have really is a Win-modem, what specifically are the symptoms that
you'd see (more specifc than it won't work).
Thanks

Subj: JAVA 118 Error Message
From: rothgv@yahoo.com
When I try to install Java 118, I get the following error
message in the x:\os2\install\wpinstal.log:
**NULLID** :: Exception -1073741819 returned to
instthrd.c 538l
Anyone have an idea what the problem is and why this
seems to prevent the installation of the Java runtime.
OS2 v4 fp11, currently java 117, ns 404,fi 125.
Thanks in advance

I'm afraid that the Drag/Drop still won't "play nice" with other
applications like that, since Netscape wants to be able to use
drag functions to do things within the browser, and using a "real"
WPS drag/drop would not allow other behaviors to occur. So,
we query the drag location from the WPS and do the work
ourselves (meaning that anything that ISN'T part of the WPS
won't be a valid drag target from Netscape).
When I said we "re-vamped" the way it worked, I meant the
way the drag code interfaces with the WPS. Before, we were
creating a SOM class and object, but now we're doing it all with
a message hook and a window created on the WPS process. I
was only mentioning this in case what we were doing before
was causing Mr. Anderson's problems with his ZIP files, in the
hopes that how we've changed it will alleviate that problem.

Are we saying that Netscape requirements will be allowed to violate IBM's
longstanding rules for WPS programming? Isn't that putting the cart before
the horse?
And a rickety cart, before a strong workhorse, at that. OS/2 already has
"real" WPS drag/drop. Netscape has minimal intelligence about this, on
*any* platform. Someone should speak up to protect OS/2 in this regard.
It seems to me that Netscape should be improved to the point where it
doesn't crash itself, or OS/2. The less it does to step on standard OS/2
programming, in any way, the better it will serve to bring decent browsing
to OS/2 desktops. And for my money, they don't need to develop News or Mail
with new "features", since OS/2 already has these applications.
We DON'T have a well-programmed browser, and we DON'T have somebody going
out and getting plugins for it. That's what we need.
