From: sam@cheapnet.co.uk (sam@cheapnet.co.uk)
does HPFS speak SMB ?
i am trying to establish an easy way for NT and OS/2 to share files.
i can mount my LINUX files by using something called SAMBA which makes
the Linux file system appear to be a MS or SMB file system.
is this necessary for OS/2 or can I access OS/2 files directly from an
NT workstation ?

I just gave up trying after several weeks. My conclusion is the driver can't
run two cards at once. Change one of your cards. I did and now I'm up and

OS/2 (at least Warp 3 Connect and Warp 4) has the "File and Print
Client"
that you can install from the Warp distribution kit.
This software allows the sharing of disk resources, printers, and COM
ports
that are on the OS/2 machine. This is a SMB resource sharing
mechanism.
It is done through the NETBIOS protocol or the NETBIOS over TCP/IP
protocol. The equivalent to SAMBA is the "NETBIOS over TCP/IP"
or TCPBEUI.
Either one can be used to share resources with an equivalent client
on another operating system.

Ahh.... this is usefull - thanks ever so but could you expand (or any other
pointer) please?Apart from ODI2NDIS shim are you recommending Novell Netbios
or IBM's?
I've still got someone with Netgear cards(hasn't exchanged them yet<g>) so
willing to experiment further but I recall some problems (details now lost in
the murky past....) with Novell netbios not functioning too well with some
apps(or vice versa)?
Is this NW 2.12 + what patches specifically?
Also I experienced problems in past with SNA frame loss when drivers were
"routing/switching" in this configuration(Raleigh had stopped effort on CM/2
open APAR regarding this years ago circa 94 I believe, and I realise that CM/2
is no longer supported now anyway...but there are still a number of corporate
users locked into this?).
I don't think this potential SNA problem would affect original poster
anyway!<vbg>.
However, although I noted you qualified the suggestion with "not ideal" and
"(carefully) remove"<g>, it sounds like it may be worth re-visiting again?

From: Kris Kadela <kris@dgraph.com>
I have several PCs on my home LAN and have noticed that when I move data
between NT and OS/2 boxes the collision light is constantly ON but it
almost never comes on when copyinf files between 2 NT boxes.
Also, transfer rates between NT and OS/2 are much lower than between 2
NT PCs. How do I "fix" this?
Running plain NetBios on all.

Subj: How to reconnect after peer leaves and returns
From: "John Dow" <jtd_nospam@pgh_nospam.net>
My desktop is OS/2 Warp 4 and networked to it is a laptop running Win 95.
If I remove the laptop (it's portable) and then return with it, it seems that
the two of them
should be able to fully communicate without having to reboot both.
I can't. The Win 95 machine's network neighborhood doesn't show the OS/2
machine. If I
remember right, in spite of this the Win 85 laptop can see files on the OS/2
desktop, but
not vice versa.
So what do I do to get them to see each other again?

From: Falko Tesch <falko.tesch@bigfoot.com>
Hi,
I am printing via LPR-Daemon through a pipes port (LPD0). This works
fine but is triggers my In-Joy 2.2 SOHO to dial up my ISP.
All I can find with IPTRACE are activitiy on the port 515 (printer)
and an unassigned port (721). I tried to exclude the using the filter
functions from In-Joy but no change.
Anyone has a working solution (i.e. a filter.cnf file) on this
problem?

I tried to put on MPTS fixpak for Warp 4 Client, and that caused a nasty

Maybe OS/2 tries to do a DNS lookup? Or the computer with the printer
does a reverse lookup? You could try to add both computers to the hosts
file on both computers.

This is the .NIF for the old DFE-530TX card not the 530TX+. Yes the old one

With IPTRACE it's not possible to trace the traffic on the external
ppp-interface (at least, I am not able to do this here). But after
Injoy has dialed out, there should be a file DOD.DMP in your Injoy
directory. Rename it to IPTRACE.DMP and then run ipformat in the same
directory. You will see one single packet that caused Injoy to dial
out.
There are no special filters necessary to prevent Injoy from dialing
while using LPR.

I am trying to revise user lists systematically and don't want to log

Is there a list in a config file somewhere on each station that I can

The user account file is in \ibmlan\accounts
It's name is NET.ACC (probably minimally encrypted)
You can browse it using the upmaccts program that is
used to update it (access is local only). There are a bunch
of API's that can be used to access the user accounts if
you want to write a program, or you can use the REXX API's
to access the information as well.
Or, you can use the NET ADMIN command to list the user accounts
NET ADMIN \\server-name /C NET USERS
If you specify the user name on the above command you get more
detail on that particular user.
NET ADMIN \\server-name /C NET USERS user-name

Hello,
we have a notebook ibm thinkpad 600 with a xircom iips token ring card.
The system should run under warp 4 in an ibm lanserver environment. When
booting Win98, the card runs fine and i can connect to the lan, transfer
files and so on. Therefore the cable, physical connection is okay. When
i boot OS/2, i get error messages from the config.sys file
"<path>\netbios.os2 not installed" . After this message the ndis driver
loads correctly.
My question: How do i have to configure (with mpts) the card, to be able
to logon to an ibm lanserver ? The protocol should be netbios.

not wanting to nitpick, (but i'm gonna nitpick). you didn't find a
resolution to the problem, you just avoided the issue of two similar cards
by installing a non-similar one. i think your most obvious
mis-configuration was that both drivers pointed to slot1.
however, i guess the point is moot since you have it working with new
cards....

A few days ago the w98 machine on the home lan crashed. Within minutes

connect and disconnect randomly to the net. everything appears normal
except when I try to access MPTS setup on the server I get the error
message that MPTS has been reinstalled and the files are locked. Exit
and reboot. I have done that several times to no avail. Does anyone
know how I can reset/process the locked files so I can reconfigure
MPTS? I really don't want to have to rem it out of the config.sys and
reinstall as the sever doesn't have a cd. (would require tearing down
one box moving the cd then putting it back. The wife and the game
players dont' think that I should take their parts. :-) )Remote
install also fails.
Would it be possible to upgrade to a newer level of MPTS. I am still at
the warp 4 orginal base level?

Weird. anyway the fix for the locked files is as follows:
From David Both's Databook for OS/2 Warp -
http://www.millennium-technology.com :
"If you have not re-installed MPTS, then delete the file IBMLANLK.LST
found in the \OS2\INSTALL directory on the boot drive. This will allow
you
to start MPTS. DO NOT delete this file if you have re-installed MPTS
and
have not yet executed a shutdown and booted on the same boot drive."

OS/2 doesn't usually need drivers - your dialler script may need to send the
correct initialisation string to the modem and look for an appropriate
response. I've been having trouble with a 33.6 modem and was pointed to new
drivers - these turn out to be .INF files for Win 95 / 98 / NT and appear to
do little apart from define the intialisation strings and the expected
responses - it all looks like part of bad bill's plan for world domination by
mystifying a simple thing like a modem

This is a bug in the installation program. It can't handle lines in excess
of 255 characters in the config.sys.
Its a real bitch. You need to truncate all lines longer than 255 then
reboot.

The only thing you need to use a (real, not win) modem is the serial port
driver COM.SYS. Most likely you already have this installed and referenced in
your config.sys. Type HELP COM.SYS at a command line for more info.

Subj: MPTS 8610: problems with tcpip
From: fritsch@remove-this.hmi.de
Hi,
I upgraded MPTS in Warp4, fixpak 11, from base level to level 8610. This
has been with a "fresh" installation of Warp 4. After upgrading MPTS,
tcpip cannot "see" a certain server in our domain, i.e. this server (which
happens to be our unix print server) does not reply to ping. About 10
other servers (POP mail, HP printer networking cards, unix workstations)
do answer.
Is there any explanation or suggestion on this? There has not been such
problem with base Warp 4 MPTS. And of course: the print server still
answers to ping from the other unix workstations.
The PC networking card is a 3com Fast Ethernet XL.

Subj: Recommended PCMCIA modem and 10/100 ethernet?
From: Timur Tabi <nospam_timur@tabi.org>
I just purchased a used Toshiba laptop that works great with OS/2. Now
I'm looking for a PCMCIA v.90 modem and a PCMCIA 10/100 (or just 10Mbs
if 10/100 is too expensive) ethernet card.
The modem must do v.90 and have a reputation for reliability.
Otherwise, I may as well get a 33.6K modem.
The ethernet card, if it does both 10Mbs and 100Mbs, should be
autodetectable. I don't want to have to reconfigure MPTS.
Also, how good is OS/2 with hot-plugging PCMCIA devices? I've never
used an OS/2 laptop before, so there's a lot I need to learn. Is it
unreasonable for me to expect that I can plug in my modem or ethernet
card while OS/2 is running, and have it recognize the card and start
using it? Or do I have to reboot?

I have a DELL Latitude, and the PCMCIA modem works with no
problems. I have Sportster 28.8, and I can remove and insert it
at will. However, I also have a Xircom Ethernet card, but it
has to be inserted at boot, and remain inserted to function. I
asked a networking guru friend about this, and he said that
OS/2's networking stack necessitates this. But maybe other card
services and drivers may be different.

You must install (using MPTS) Netware Netbios Emulation to achieve this.
IPX by itself is not enough. You should not install Novells netbios
emulation.

I have managed to get the NIC driver installed and configured TCP/IP so I

Hm. The IBM Home and Away 14.4kB modem 10Mbs ethernet combo card I can
pull / reinsert before boot, there after, during operation at will. It
just works. However, it installs its own com.sys copy to allow for this
magic of dynamic irq/com port/address assignment. Too bad stock com.sys
doesn't do that.
To work well, my Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI controller card (1640a2) OTHO needs
to be in and connected to what ever devices (powered up) I wish to use,
otherwise it goes blind and doesn't do anything. This seems to depend on
the drivers used, too, but somehow even Adaptec have not yet managed /
bothered to put out a reasonable one for the card. I do doubt they will.
Cheers, Stefan

Perhaps this is not even practical, if not, please forgive me. If so,
please help me or direct me towards on line tech info that will take me
where I need to go.
Objective:
Currently I have two separate OS/2 systems, each running Warp v4 (fat
clients). Each of the systems support a dedicated proprietary GUI
application used to monitor temperatures, and control on/off functions
for various peripheral hardware devices. The proprietary GUI
applications ,despite being authored by the same company, and designed
for substantially the exact same purpose, are" architecturally
incompatible", because the "NewSystem" is 100% object oriented, while
the "OldSystem" is not. The cost of the peripheral hardware attached to
each system is substantial, and each "family' of connected hardware is
likewise Architecturally incompatible with it's counterparts in the
other "family".
I desire to share only five (5) analog values between the two systems,
and the system supplier is so busy retooling for their upcoming
"migration to Win NT" that they have become useless.
The five (5) analog values are objects in and of themselves within the
"NewSystem" and happen to be DDE servers as well. You might call them:
C:\NewSystem\Sensors\Objectdata1.val through ... Objectdata5.val
There is no in trinsic Rexx enablement within the "NewSystem"
Application.
I need to share these five (5) data objects in real time with the
"OldSystem" so that the value (example 72.4) would become
C:\OldSystem\Sensors\Objectdata1.val through ... Objectdata5.val.
The "OldSystem" is not Object Oriented, but is robustly Rexx enabled as
well as being DDE enabled..
NamedPipe connection between the systems seems to hold the most
promising solution. But I have not the slightest clue of how to
configure the automatic and on going data transfer from one "C" drive to
the other "C" drive. And what info I have found gives very little
guidance on how to structure the NamedPipe connection. I believe there
are Rexx "add-on" packages that can start the NamedPipe "server" in
motion from the Rexx that is part of the Base OS/2 operating system that
runs the "NewSystem" application. So, hopefully the DDE server
enablement of the analog objects originating in "NewSystem" will be
sufficient to get the data "into" the NamedPipe, and the robust Rexx
enablement of the "OldSystem" application will be sufficient to pull the
data out of the NamedPipe and place it into a DDE slot just about
anywhere necessary within "OldSystem" Perhaps even the elegantly
simple "PipeMon" feature of "Sysbar/2" is all I would need at the
receiving end, but possessing only ignorance and enthusiasm in
abundance, I don't even know how to set up "Pipemon" for the 'call'
across two systems.
Although each of the two systems are veritable "swiss army knives" of
communication protocols, only "Arc net" and "RS-232" are common between
them.
Am I crazy? Of course! probably to the same degree that I am an
incurable optimist.
Any and all help greatly appreciated!!

I need to get an OS/2 Warp 4 machine to map drives from an NT Server
running NT 4.0 service pack 5.
Does anybody out there have a cookbook recipie for this type of
connectivity?
I have not had any luck so far and I am not an OS/2 expert or an NT
expert. My
background is Unix, so this is quite a new networking mix for me.
Just to add flavour to the pot, the OS/2 machine is on a different
network than the NT
machine.I saw some mention of tunneling NetBEUI through TCP (TCPBEUI?)
in an
article, on an OS/2 page, but could not figure out how to manage any
of this.
Given a couple of the posts, I am not the only person trying to do
this. If anyone who
reads this has any ideas, I would be very interested in hearing them.
Some things I am wondering are:
1) Do I need some FixPaks (what ones and where do I find them)?
2)
Thanks in advance,

Xircom has a 100/10 ethernet & V.90 modem card, with OS/2 drivers. It
apparently also works with Linux. The card takes two PCMCIA slots and
has an RJ45 and two RJ11 jacks right on the card, so you don't need
any special adapters. It's also available from IBM.

You'll need Netbios over TCP/IP and other changes to your IBMLAN.INI
here is a site that explains this setup very well.
http://www.mit.edu/activities/os2/peer/WARPPEER.HTM
...yet another site you may want to reference also is at:
http://www.flash.net/~roknrob/sea.htm
...this mentions about the "LMAnnounce" parameter to set to browser
the resources on the "W" OS.
Also after words you might want to add the Domain name for the NT
workstation to your IBMLAN.INI on the OS/2 machine. The file is
under \IBMLAN directory, use the OS/2 Editor "E" or "Tedit"
and look for "OTHDOMAIN" and added the names (e.g. WORKGROUP, etc)
be sure to seperate from the other with a comma ",".
Hope this helps.

Although my Home & Away card can also be removed and reinserted
and still have ethernet work, I find that the modem function is
lost if the machine (Compaq Contura Aero) goes into suspend mode.
When I resume the machine after a suspend, I must remove and
reinsert the card to get ethernet to work again, but modem will
only return after a reboot. This is not the case if I hard-code
an IRQ for the modem to use, but then ethernet does not work at
all. So its nice, but could be better...
