Sb: OS/2 Utils for PC Mag?
Fm: Edward Mendelson [PCMag] 72241,41
To: All
I'm writing a best-utilities story for an upcoming issue of PC Magazine, and
would be very grateful for suggestions about the best OS/2 utilties.
The ones I rely on most are CMDLINE, DESKMAN/2, and EXTDESK (the IBM
Employee-Written Software that lets you align icons on a grid). I also use
EABACK and INIMAINT.
What are the other really essential OS/2 utilities for desktop and file
management, and for any other general-purpose use? If you can tell me a
contact name and phone or CIS number along with your suggestions, there'll be
a much better chance of getting the products into the story, because there's a
*very* tight deadline coming up.
Any help gratefully received...

Ed,
I use Performance 2.1 probably as much as anything. It's simple to use, has a
a good assortment of utilities and is very reasonably priced. It has saved my
countles hours in maintenance of my system. The package is marketed by CLEAR
& SIMPLE P.O. BOX 130 W.Simsbury, CT 06092. The phone number I have is (203)
658-1204. Also, PM Patrol monitor my system full time. Its unobtrusive
status line on the bottom of the screen floats nicely to the top and provides
a contstant picture of my systems internals. It is a shareware program I just
recently started using to "keep an eye" on the OS2 envelope I like to push the
edge of. The software is published by Dave Wallenberg, Attn: Wallyware 2210
Kingston Drive, Wheaton IL, 60187. Let me see, what else... I also have
DeskMan installed, but find it a bit cumbersome, and, without printed
documentation, a bit of hassle to get going. I like to sit on the couch and
read documentation BEFORE I get started with new software. Oh yea, GammaTech
too. Quite a few powerful utilities, I run Sentry full time to protect my
Desktop and system critical files. Golden CommPass... Now that's essential. I
saved the cost of the program within 2 weeks of installing it. If you
navigate around CIM much and run OS2, you gotta have it. Straight forward
install. Worked flawlessly from the first try.
Hope this helps.
Regards....

Bill,
Many thanks for those tips. I'll follow them all up on Monday. Could you
possibly tell me something more about Performance 2.1? Is PM Patrol available
in the Libs here? I didn't notice it, but I admit I wasn't looking very hard.
Golden Compass is terrific, I agree--but there isn't enough room in a
best-utilities story to include comm programs. (Though I will try to mention
VSIO, which is wonderful, and does fit the idea of the story as I see it so
far.)
Thanks again--any other suggestions *always* welcome!

On a less-snotty note <g>, I use MKS Tools for OS/2. I like the Korn shell
and utilities: find, diff, grep, vi, etc.
I also value FaxWorks -- it's a terrific fax program. And my tape backup
program: BakupWiz by PCX. It's inexpensive, fast, and reliable. (But if's
for SCSI tape drives only.) PCX (a.k.a. Peter Schultz) has a section in
OS2BVEN.

Also try NISTP.ZIP. It's a simple dialer for the NIST cesium clock, and I've
had better results with it than any other time setting program. The zip file
contains both DOS and OS2 versions of the program.
Also try PMKILL.ZIP, a WPS process killer, and OS2MEMU, which displays lots of
info on active processes, memory, etc., when you are in OS2. KWQ12e.ZIP is an
excellent shareware QWK mail reader that bears some attention.

Edward,
You might want to check out JoeView if you haven't yet. It is a relatively
simple yet powerful image viewer/converter. It's neat property is that it is
a nicely designed OS/2 app, supporting Drag-and-drop, Pop-up-menus (from Right
mouse button) and more. One cool feature is the ability to 'iconize' a file,
which attaches a 'thumb-nail' view as the file's icon, so you can see what it
is from an icon view of the folder it is in. It also supports REXX, so you
can iconize a whole directory of files in one shot.

There are two Caveat-emptors, 1. it takes a long time to initialize the first
time (30 minutes?), but this is a background thing, and 2. it is wicked
Nag-ware. I intend to register mine soon (after you use it for a while it
delays for a progressively longer period on opening).
The iconization feature is a cool trick. I think PicturePublizher for
Macintosh does the same thing. On OS/2, you'd need Ultimedia Workplace for
thumbnails. To use it effectively you need a 1024x768 display (where icons
are 40x40).

Nagware??? Groan...!!! I find that I'm far more likely to register a product
that doesn't nag me. The naggers just make life so unpleasant that I wipe 'em
from the disk after a while. And I always feel that if I register, I'm just

Edward,
My three favourites are
Zip Control by Frank Fortson, an essential zipfile viewer and handler. I've
tried nearly all on CIS, and this is by far the best.
WPSBKP by Dave Lester, a very simple and easy to use shell backup programme.
Essential if something goes wrong and you have to use ALTF1 to go back to the
original config.sys
and PMSAM , a new file manager for AmiPro for OS/2. It's just come out and it
is/will be a real boon for anyone who uses AmiPro a lot.
MY CIS number is on this note. Don't forget Golden Commpass of course that
this is written on, and the Arcadia PIM! There;s a real bunch of simply great
software around for OS/2! And it's hard to pick the best. The first three
I've given you are all shareware which is why I picked them specially. I can
give you details on these and lots more if you need it.

Many thanks. I'll take a look at ZipControl, and will crank up WPSBKP again.
PMSAM is probably too specialized for this story because of its link to OS/2.
Incidentally, does anyone have a favorite OS/2 file manager that they *really*
like? I've tried a few, but haven't been overwhelmed by the ones I've seen so
far?

My favorite is XLIST which is admittedly patterned after the old IBM mainframe
FILELIST program. It's shareware ($25, I think) from Gary Wood 76156,317 .
Also concur with CMDLINE, WPSBKUP (a real *-saver!) and MKS toolkit.
Admittedly my mainframe and unix orientations are not universal, but xlist
unlike most file managers allows you to type in ANY command against a file,
which is quite convenient.
Also: procs and killem (procs shows the process ID's and killem will attempt
to kill one). UnTieCom (available from Indelible Blue for $12) allows you to
have a fax program loaded all the time but you can use the com port/modem for
any other outgoing calls without conflict; untiecom detects a ring and
activates Faxworks. (It works with selective ringing or whatever the local
operating company chooses to call that feature, but does not require it).
Flextext is a handy file printing program with format and font selection.
Shareware from Robert Stuart 74230,1620.
All of these except for untiecom and cmdline are in the libs here, I think.

What's wrong with OS/2's built in file stuff? I can't think of anything I can
do (except compare two files) from the drives objects that I could do with
other file managers...
OS/2 does so much on its own, there's not a lot of need for other utilities.
I don't know if classifies as a utility, but Ray Gwinn's SIO comm drivers are
fantastic for multitasking.

File Management seems to be a matter of highly personal taste... Some people
are happy with built-in features; others use something different. Under DOS I
use DX; under Windows the PC Tools File Manager; I'm still looking for an OS/2
file management tool that I really like. Nothing's wrong with the built-in
stuff, but there's always room for something better....

Like you say, it's a matter of taste (file manager preference). I hope you'll

Just off the top of my head, here's a list of things XTree Gold can do that
the Drives object can't:
1) "Flatten out" a directory, displaying and managing files in all
subdirectories as if they were all in the current directory. You can also use
this to span different drives, including floppies and network drives.
2) Create and manage Zip files, including self-extracting Zips, with or
without directory structures.
3) Execute an Xcopy-like operation, duplicating a directory structure.
4) Filter the list of files displayed, by name, date, etc. You can have a list
of file patterns to include and exclude.
The list goes on and on ... I'd LOVE to get a Drives object that could do just
what I've listed above.
Yours,
Andy

I've tried a few, and I think File Commander/2 is outstanding, but these progs
are a matter of taste. FC/2 is a more text-driven utility than the others,
but is very fast and can be tailored. I would suspect in six months or so it
will even more powerful.
Another vote here for FaxWorks, which is rock-solid and extremely useful (if

Just looked and it's FC2_10.zip in you guessed it, os2user lib 4. Hope you
like it. Affordable, too, at $20, and nag free -- only one or two features
are disabled, and there is something rather droll about trying to get into a
sequence of help topics and finding each one saying, "Registering, How To,"
and "Shareware," and "Address to Send Money To."
If there is a drawback it's that it doesn't preserve WPS associations on
files, the user must program his own -- I haven't seen any thirdparty utils
which do this actually, which is something of a nuisance. But once done, the
associations work like a snap.

Two of my favorites are: FILEBAR by Eric A. Wolf-498 Wiley Hall NW West
Lafayette, Indiana 47906-4223 (internet: ericwolf@mentor.cc.purdue.edu). The
file is available here: check LIB 4 for FILEBAR. It creates a configurable

9LIVES Virtual Desktops by Ross Judson-13105-G Tall Shadows Lane, Fairfax VA,

desktops to be used independantly or in concert, each with their own open
processes, background, and icons. It shows the power of OS/2 SOM/WPS
architecture, and is a technique/ability Windows has no comparison to.
There are some professional packages available, such as Performance 2.1 by
Clear & Simple,INC (203-658-1204). It is mostly REXX routine/programs for
gaining info and changing system settings. It is really a BOOK with
accompanying code. Some interesting stuff, but nothing I didn't already know,
then again I program OS/2 in assembler sometimes<g>. Neat code though...Then
there's the GammaTech utils by GammaTech. Their tech line is (405-359-7391).
The utils include Undelete,Sysinfo,Analyze disks,Optimize disks,etc. Really
good.
There are a slew of others...everything that is provided under DOS/WIN but
better and much that extends OS/2 and its subsystems: alot of the PM-GREPs
are nice (the battle cry: GREP on ALL systems!!!),there are many PM-LIST type
programs, the IBM ALPHA stuff, extensions for the EPM editor, tons of REXX libs
and code,C/C++ code,IPF help on the system,peripherals,code,etc. The 4DOS
command processor has an OS/2 counterpart called 4OS/2, which also extends
such commands as START and DETACH.

FM/2 is an excellent file manager+ written by Mark Kimes. It is billed as a
"super drives object" and handles all sorts of compressed file formats as well
as program/file association and drag'n'drop, etc. I find it indispensable.

Another really good one is Font Folder, by Cliff Cullum (CIS 75136,2414). It
allows you to catalog and view as many ATM fonts as you like _without_ having
them installed. In addition, you can install (and remove) fonts and have them
immediately available _while_ your PM word processor is open. Very nice for
those of us who commonly use a few fonts but occasionally use hundreds of
others.
I'm looking forward to the article.

I use Norton Commander a lot and I like it a lot. I really hate the bugs that
it has and the total lack of support for the product from symantec.
What bugs? Well sometimes the program just quits. Disappers. Gone. RE-execute
the program and it will usually work fine. If it is copying from HPFS to FAT
and it encounters a long file name that won't fit on FAT it reports the error
"can't create directory for copy." (huh?) And my favorite "An unknown error
has ocurred." (Great. what do I do now? how do I fix the problem? what IS the
problem?)
If I ever get some time, I'll be investigating some alternatives.

Absolutely essential are the freeware Info-Zip ZIP and UNZIP programs.
PKWare may release a PKZIP/2 someday that is compatible with PKZIP 2.04g for
DOS, but I'm not holding my breath. To make ZIP/UNZIP easier to use, I tried
just about all of the Presentation Manager shareware ZIP managers I could
find on CompuServe and the wonderful OS/2 Shareware BBS. Frank Fortson's Zip
Control, supported in Section 1 of the OS2BVEN forum, is definitely the best.
You've probably already got lots of votes for Ray Gwinn's replacement
comm drivers, SIO. Version 1.26 improved my Procomm Plus download speed by
10%-15%.
Don't forget Ken Kahn's BOOT2X utility! I couldn't live without that
one. I have a maintenance partition on my hard drive that I can boot to run
CHKDSK on the OS/2 partition, plus it makes a nice bootable floppy that is
faster and more compact than booting from the installation diskettes.
The GammaTech Utilities are good, too. I need the FATSort utility
because Sytos Plus won't sort my directories as it backs them up. The
defragmenters for FAT and HPFS are good, and the Undelete is very handy, too.

Yes, I am suggesting both Info-Zip and Frank Fortson's Zip Control. Zip
Control is a graphical front-end utility for the command-line oriented
Info-Zip Zip/UnZip utilities. Zip Control saves you from the hassle of
trying to remember all those little option switches! The Info-Zip utilities
are free, of course, so if you register Zip Control for $22.00, this must be
the absolute best deal in OS/2 zip file management.

You've already gotten an extensive list from me via email. <big grin>
But to clarify for all of us... where are you drawing the line on what makes
something a "utility"? I.e. a comm program isn't a utility, but something like
CMDLINE definitely is. Is a screen capture program a utility? -- in which
case, I'll recommend One-Up's Open Shutter in a <cough> flash. (One Up is in
OS2AVEN.)
There's getting to be quite a crop of desktop managers. I looked at and like

Esther,
With all of five pages to cover *every* kind of utility for the PC (DOS,
Windows, OS/2), I have to draw the line somewhere... The basics of the story
are a survey of disaster-prevention tools (Norton Utilities); from there on to
memory managers, disk caches, defragmenters and similar efficiency programs;
system reporting tools; file managers; and desktop enhancers and similar
luxuries that most of us can't live without.
I'm not sure about screen captures; will probably leave them out, unless there
turns out to be lots of room. But comm programs are simply too large a
category for this story--while things like SIO, I hope, do go in.
Quick definition of a utility: a program that doesn't get any work done in
itself, but helps to make it easier, safer, more efficient to get work done,
and to make a more agreeable and reliable environment for getting work done.
But with all the deadlines I have facing me this week, I'd be very grateful if
any debate on that definition could be put off for another time...!!! (And
I'm unilaterally ruling out PIMs etc...)

you go; I betcha I could you match you deadline-for-deadline this week. I wish
I could lose...)
Five pages to cover all that? Gee, that's *lots* of room! <<ducking and
giggling>>
I'll warn you, though: I got more email from my "Esther's Utilities" article
(which was just my list of utilities *I* wouldn't delete anytime soon) than
from anything else I've written. Gobs of people wanted to know why I didn't
include *thus*-and-so. If I'd included everything they'd mentioned, it'd take
over most of the magazine. (And I'll slap the next person who suggests that
the article could have been called "Schindler's List." It was funny the
_first_ ten times....)
Oh yeah... here's a utility that I haven't used, but some people swear by.
There's a tiny Windows program (the name of which I've forgotten, dammit, but
I'm sure someone will chime in) which doesn't take up much in the way of
resources. However, if you load it in your OS/2 startup folder, it'll just sit
there quietly in the background and make it faster for you to load any Windows
applications. It's not useful to me, personally, as I've discovered (to my
personal amazement, really) that I'm not running very many Windows
applications anymore.

pricey and hard to find. There used to be a demo copy in libs here, but the
demos expire every three months, and the company seems to take a long time to

ADU/2 is a German-written utility by Thorsten Wentzlawski and is available
from
VTS-Datensysteme GmbH & Co
P.O. Box 305583
2000 Hamburg 36
Germany
FAX +49 40 453873 (Germany)
It costs DM 248,00 including 15% tax in Germany, I don't know what they charge
in the US. It runs in text mode, is blindingly fast (very much fast than any
other OS/2 file manager I have tried) and has lots of keyboard short cuts
available.
I have a demo (not the newest version, but there seems little difference)
which does not run out and which came from the IBM BBS in Boblingen (Germany).
If anyone is interested I could upload it.
In addition I can recommend PC/2, a programme launcher from Vienna, which
enables launching by clicking the left mouse button on the WPS: this brings up
a menu (which you can configure yourself) with several levels if required. You
can reduce the number of mouseclicks considerably with it, something which is
very important to me. It is also possible to use it as a WPS replacement. I
only have it on CD-ROM, but could compress and upload it.

a menu (which you can configure yourself) with several levels if required. You
can reduce the number of mouseclicks considerably with it, something which is
very important to me. It is also possible to use it as a WPS replacement. I
only have it on CD-ROM, but could compress and upload it.

Edward,
I know this is a bit out of place in an OS/2 forum, but if you're still adding
to your DOS list, let me recommend PocketD. It's sort of a Swiss Army knife
of file management utilities. It does everything from simple color file lists
to finding all files updated in the last five days with sizes between 32 bytes
and 128 bytes that contain the string "DON'T PANIC". I wouldn't know what to
do without it. The latest version is POCK40.ZIP. If you have trouble finding
it, let me know and I'll e-mail you a copy.

Michael,
I haven't seen 9 lives so I can't give you an objective comparison but I can
explain Skyscraper a little. The concept is that each screen area (that area
that shows in your monitor at any given time) represents a desktop. There are
multiple desks on a floor and multiple floors in a building. Though I have
never used more than one floor consisting of about 10 desks, there is
potential to have many. Skyscraper runs in the bottom right corner of my
screen (always visible) and shows my 8 desks, each represented at a button.
Within each button I can see the icons of the applicatons that are running in
that area of the virtual screen and I can go to a desk by picking the desk I
want.
I'm not doing a good job of explaining it right now. Suffice it to say that I
can run all my applications full-screen, each on their own desktop and quickly
get to any one I want with the pick of button. I can drag apps to different
desktops, apps can be shared across desktops (I do this with PM Patrol so that
I always have it visible no matter where I go), and you can drag the icon of
an application onto a desk and it will switch to that desk and start the app.
There is also a floor to represent your full screen applications.
Apart from the virtual desktop features, Skyscraper has an application
launcher that is a icon button bar of applications that you use all the time.
Load up the button bar with the apps you most often need to get to by dragging
an icon onto the bar. All that show is the icon itself and it launches with a
single click. Since it is a copy of the original object it retains the
configurations, such as DOS settings, etc.
Using Skyscraper, I rarely have to open folders to launch applications and I
almost NEVER have to minimize running programs to buy screen real estate ... I
just switch to a blank desk <g>! As to where to get it, I honestly don't
know! I haven't seen it advertised as of yet though I know that it is
shipping. I'm familiar with it because I beta tested it.

"Skyscraper sounds good, but can you save the configuration for a desk along
with the applications you want on that desk, so that when you start that desk
the next time, it will automatically launch the programs needed for the save
configuration. "
You can save up to 8 different complete desktop configurations. Let me
describe my setup. I have Skyscraper setup to be one "floor" of 8 "desks" and
I can see a graphic representation of each desktop in the button bar.
Skyscraper is in my startup folder (along with a bunch of other stuff) and it
is set to delay it's startup 20 seconds and restore state #1 when it does
start. So I turn my computer on and all these applications start opening up
on my one desktop, Arcadia, Novell requestor, Faxworks, PM Patrol, file
managers, etc. My desktop looks like one big blob of applications all
maximized. The last app to start is Skyscraper and ... wham ... each app is
now running maximized in its own desktop area because Skyscraper restored a
previously saved configuration. It doesn't launch the programs itself (in the
beginning) but it does know what apps go where in the virtual desktop space so
if an app is running at the time Skyscraper starts it will put it in its
place. Boy what I wouldn't give for a graphical method of explaining this
right now <g>!
My copy came from Binar for being a beta tester so, again, I can't tell you
where to buy it but I'd be willing to bet it's available from Indelible and
places like that.

It occurs to me that another candidate is Ray Gwinn's SIO/VSIO drivers for
OS/2. They go beyond just improvements in efficiency or stability over the
standard COM/VCOM serial port drivers, these days: they have far more flexible
DOS Settings options and hardware setup options. What's more, the package
includes a very useful "Poor Man's Line Monitor" program that I've used to
good effect many times. There should be support for the Hayes, and other,
'smart' serial port devices shortly; that's in beta test now.

Edward,
If you are looking for OS/2 utilities here is one of my favorites: Extended
Desktop by Don Campbell. I am not sure that this particular utility counts,
because it is free. It is part of IBM's EWS (Employee Written Software)
program. But I love it. Here is a little bit about it:
EXTINST registers the ExtendedDesktop Class, then uses a public API in
OS/2
to "replace" the WPDesktop class with the ExtendedDesktop class. Any
objects of the WPDesktop class will exhibit the behavior of the
ExtendedDesktop class. A reboot is required for it to take effect.
It does NOT modify the CONFIG.SYS. Everything about your current setup
(settings, icon positions, etc ) remains untouched. The only changes you
will see are:
1) Sort and Arrange will be absent from the Desktop context menu,
2) an Align item and a Snap-to-Grid item will be added to the Desktop
context menu. [This will allow for precise placement of icons.]
3) 2 Arrange settings pages will be in the Desktop Settings
notebook,
4) an Icons settings page will be added to the Desktop Settings
notebook,
5) The Sort settings page will be absent from the Desktop
Settings notebook.
Good luck. I look forward to your article.

Extended Desktop is my *very* special favorite! About a year ago, someone at
IBM told me that Don Campbell had written it--but that it wouldn't ready for
release until IBM's lawyers had looked it over. I got in touch with Don, and
begged to have a copy, because the worst thing about the OS/2 desktop is the
lack of any snap-to-grid feature built in. Don couldn't release it without
legal approval, and I think the fact that I kept calling him and begging for
the program may have helped him decide that it was easier just to get the
approval than to keep wasting time with my phone calls...
Anyway, now that EXTDESK is here, I no longer waste hours nudging my icons
into the right places. A wonderful timesaver and enhancer...

Edward, I use many utitlities, some have been already mentioned and some not.
In this last group :
1. ENVLGO.ZIP. a very easy, fast envelope program. I use it together with
Relish. You select the text, then copy to clipboard (mouse or Ctrl-Ins) then
click the envelogo icon and you have a nice printed envelope with the logo of
your choice. John M. Pedersen CIS 76547,357
2. ICONES.ZIP by Dave Lester , CIS ID 75600,237. I have been playing with the
demo and work very well to archive (and compress) icon files.
3. MEGADS.ZIP creates many virtual desktop. It is very easy to use, works well
with 2.11.
4. BOOTOS2.ZIP an excellent utility which creates a single OS/2 boot diskette
( and many other configurations ) which even allows me to load the Iomega
drivers for the Bernouille. Kennneth A. Kahn, CIS- 71333,2526. If you use 2.11
be sure to get the last version which I belive is still in beta.
5. TINYED.ZIP a very small character, page editor. Written by Tim Baldwin
Version 2.00. There is a DOS and OS/2 version. It is ideal to use together
with BOOTOS2 from the command line. Loads very fast. It is quite powerful.
And of course for me the best utility for a word processor (in my case
Describe) is --> IBM Personal Dictation System, which is allowing me to stay
more and more away from the keyboard.
Who knows, probably if people like you start to write more and more about the
OS/2 plataform in PC Magazine I may have reasons to read it again.

That's a very useful list. I've tried some of them already. Now that you
mention ICONES.ZIP, it reminds me of something I wish I could find for OS/2--a
utility that would let me drag a Windows icon over to an OS/2 object, and
convert the Win icon into an OS/2 icon for the object, right on the spot.
Just drag, drop, and convert. I can't believe it's impossible--and it seems
like something that would be very popular.
Sorry to impose this on you, but it's something that I keep hoping to see...

>would be very grateful for suggestions about the best OS/2 utilties.
I recently downloaded Group Folder from this forum GFOLDR.ZIP, and am finding
it a useful way of organizing programs and folders. It's hard to explain, but
what it does is maintain a split-screen folder of folders! The (graphical)
list of the main folder categories is on the left, and the right side contains
the folders and files within each category. I can instantly bring up all my
communications programs, or Windows programs, or whatever without covering the
WPS desktop with icons...

Joe,
Thanks--I started using Group Folder last year. It's a very good idea, but I
found that I only used it for one folder. Will give it another look.
Incidentally, with this kind of program, we're getting into a level of detail
that I would very much want to cover (it's where the fun is), but I probably
won't be able to cover them in a 5-page story on all PC utilities--OS/2, DOS,
Win....

I just got in on this thread yesterday, and after about 150 messages, I'm
really amazed and pleased at the number of OS2 utilities out there. My
favorate so far (I'm new to OS2) is CPUMonitorPlus from BonAmi software. I
don't know how it compares the the Share/Free ware perf monitors mentioned in
this thread.
Request: I can't see any way you can mention the number of utilities brought
up in this tread given confines of your article. I just now realized that I
should have saved or printed at least have of the messages in this thread.
Could you compile an electronic CIS version of the results of your inquiry.
Stuff like utilities mentioned and how many times mentioned to give us an idea
(like voting) of how popular the utility is. I would be willing to help if
you like.
Good luck on you writing, and thanks for starting the thread.

Edward,
Has anyone mentioned these?
- DeskPic Screen Saver (freeware)
- Metz Free Memory (freeware)
- Metz Date / Time (freeware)
- EnveLogo Envelope Printer (freeware)
- INIMaint for editing OS/2 .INI files (shareware)
- PMContrast for graphically comparing two ASCII files for differences
(freeware)
- PMDiskMap for viewing hard disk usage in a pie chart form (freeware)
- TE/2 Terminal Emulator to replace Procomm, etc. (shareware)
- ZoomIt for zooming in on a portion of the screen (freeware)
- Unit Conversions for performing a variety of unit conversions via a
notebook control (freeware)
These are some of my favorites. I have others, but I have seen other people
report them, so I didn't. I didn't take the time to get all the additional
info you wanted. If any of these utilities is of interest to you, I can get
the author's CIS ID, source for downloading, etc. Just let me know which
ones.

Mike,
*Very* useful list--no need to bother with contact names, because I have most
of those already. I think in a story like this one (all of five pages to
cover the whole range of utilities), I doubt I'll be able to reach the level
of detail that would cover all of them. I use DeskPic myself--with the random
saver option on, so I'm sometimes startled to see what's on the screen when I
go away for a while...
Thanks again...

Seeing Mike's list reminds me of two I use:
Graphical File Compare (OS2GFC.ZIP in OS2USER lib 17) which makes a nice
graphical and text display of the differences between two ascii files.
(I've never seen or heard of PMContrast. Where is it ?)
FileGraph (I have FG100.ZIP from OS2USER lib 15, but I see there's also
PMFG10.ZIP which is newer) which displays a bar chart of disk usage by
directory.
But the one I haven't seen mentioned that I use a lot is Larry Waibel's PM
Directory Match (PMDMAT.ZIP in OS2USER lib 4), which is based on the old
DirMatch utility from PC Magazine (which I also used a lot). Some of the file
managers that have been mentioned, like FM/2, have directory comparison
functions, but PMDMATCH does it right. And Larry keeps improving it.
I'll also put a word in for Xlist, which has been mentioned. As a long-time
VM user of Filelist, FUList, etc (and the PC's FileCommand), I appreciate the
ability to act directly on multiple files without the necessity of going
through whatever mechanism is provided by the file manager you're using. You
essentially have multiple command lines with filenames already set up for you
-- very nice for those of us who like to work from the command line. In fact,
I'm a bit surprised there haven't been more Filelist clones -- once you get
used to the capabilities, you miss them with the normal run of file managers,
a la OS/2 Drives, Norton File Commander, or Windows File Manager. However, I
do wish Xlist were a PM/WPS implementation rather than character based. It
doesn't really work well in a window. In fact, I find that I tend to use FM/2
for most of my work and call up Xlist only when I need its capabilities. I'd
be happier if I could stick to Xlist comfortably.

I'm virtually certain that Envelogo would work with a dot-matrix printer, or
even a daisy-wheel printer for that matter. What it does is have you
generate a printable envelope, using whatever software you like, addressed to
"aaaaaa" at "aaaaaa...". Then it substitutes the actual address info on the
fly at print time.

Yes - I realized after I posted that I might have mentioned that, given the

"I'm using 1.36. Am I far behind?"
Not really - Mark has fixed up a couple of relatively obscure video gotchas
that may not affect you - if you have an S3-based video card, try the "Totals"
feature, and you'll know. Ver. 1.37 fixes it. Actually, he's up to 1.39, but

I would recommend that you don't automatically rule out a utility just because
it does use nagware. JoeView uses a progressive nagware system that gets more
nagging as you use it. What's wrong with that? I think if a person has used
an application 50 times without paying for it, he probably won't pay for it
(unless strenuously reminded).
Truthfully I could never understand the logic of someone using the "nagware"
reason for not liking or not registering a product.

Of course I don't automatically rule out nagware! It simply creates a less
than friendly impression; nothing more than that.
I haven't seen JoeView yet, so didn't know about the progressive nag. I
agree: nothing really wrong with that, but I suspect that an even better
solution is a nag that starts after 30 days. By that time, you either want it
(and will register) and you don't want it, so you might as well delete it...
