  167. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) IBM's plans for peer-to-peer networking.  Well, as you
  168. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) know the base OS/2 Warp package comes with what some
  169. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people like to call "casual networking," namely the
  170. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) ability to dial up the Internet (and other online
  171. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) services, including CompuServe) and do things that you
  172. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) might ordinarily do over a network, but remotely.  So,
  173. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) with the base package, you can send and receive Internet
  174. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) mail, share a virtual chalkboard (using the included
  175. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Person to Person software) to conduct a live computerized
  176. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) "conference call," and so on.  But I think what a lot of
  177. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people would like to see is a version of OS/2 Warp where
  178. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you don't go out and buy networking software (software
  179. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) that operates over a network card, such as a Novell
  180. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) NetWare requester or peer-to-peer networking) "a la
  181. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) carte."  It's really a packaging issue more than one
  182. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) of availability.  That's what our so-called network
  183. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) version of OS/2 Warp is for.  This version of OS/2 Warp
  184. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) will contain a larger BonusPak with extra applications
  185. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for use with your network card, so you have flexibility,
  186. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) in one box, to connect with virtually any system.  (And
  187. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you can easily upgrade from the base OS/2 Warp by just
  188. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) getting the larger BonusPak and adding it on.)  That
  189. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) release is just entering beta testing, and we're hoping
  190. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we will be able to ship it some time in the spring
  191. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (Northern Hemisphere), perhaps even early spring.  Howeve

  206. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Like CompuServe, Prodigy, or almost any other online
  207. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) service, signing on to the Internet costs something to
  208. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) somebody.  Part of the culture of the Internet (one which
  209. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I respect, by the way) is the free (emphasis on the word
  210. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) free) exchange of information and ideas.  With OS/2 Warp,
  211. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) when you sign on, there's some legalese which you're
  212. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) supposed to read, then some more legalese.  A lot of
  213. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people didn't read it and, hence, when the first month's
  214. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) bill came for usage charges, they were surprised that
  215. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) access to the Internet through an 800 number cost more
  216. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) than access through a local dial-up number (even though
  217. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we did spell it out and recorded rate information, for
  218. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) review later on, for each user).  I thought the last
  219. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) sentence in the Infoworld article was the most interestin
  220. g,
  221. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) because it mentioned that Infoworld surveyed several
  222. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Internet providers and found that none charged zero for
  223. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) 800 number access, and the range was from $4 to $8.
  224. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) The IBM Global Network access was right in the middle of
  225. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the pack.
  226. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Anyway, connecting to the Internet is not, unfortunately,

  228. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) free.  If you're at a university, connecting to the
  229. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Internet, you pay for it in your tuition.  At a company,
  230. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) your company pays.  There are some costs involved.
  231. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Fortunately you can shop around with OS/2 Warp.  If you
  232. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) don't like the IBM Global Network rates (which are the
  233. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) best around if you travel -- it's great if you're a
  234. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) notebook user and need access to the Internet from
  235. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) practically anywhere in the world), just use your favorit

  266. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) will be recognized by OS/2 Warp when you install it,
  267. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and all the optimum settings for those games will be
  268. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) provided and an icon set up for the game.
  269. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Let's assume that you're talking about a DOS game.
  270. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) There are several steps you can take.  First, take a
  271. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) look at all the information located in your OS/2 Warp
  272. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Information folder.  Also, use the electronic
  273. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) resources available to you, including CompuServe --
  274. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) there's a great list of games settings that have been
  275. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) compiled by OS/2 Warp users to help you.  (I believe
  276. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you'll find the list as GAMESXX.ZIP on most online
  277. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) services, where XX is the version number.)  Some of
  278. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the most common settings to try are:
  279. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) HW_TIMER      ON
  280. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) IDLE_SENSITIVITY    100
  281. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION (try both)
  282. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) SESSION_PRIORITY   (boost slightly for performance)
  283. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) The last setting, SESSION_PRIORITY, is new to OS/2
  284. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Warp.  Use it carefully, because boosting it will
  285. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) make other applications suffer in comparison.

  287. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for best performance, and you may wish to turn off
  288. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) sound as a last resort for performance reasons again.

  303. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) ValuePak) allows Lotus 1-2-3 to import and export

  321. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) guarantee.  If you're not satisfied with the product,
  322. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you can return it.  (The length of time is often
  323. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) extended if you're actively working with our technical
  324. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) support to resolve any problems, and we can't solve
  325. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) it for you.)  Second, we publish a list of tested PCs
  326. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) where we've run OS/2 Warp and determined that it works
  327. (#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) correctly, without fuss.  That's called the PCM Table
