(#18,Matt Pollicove) People are afraid to support something non MS I think
(#22,DAN PATRICK) SLOW PROGRAMERS
(#8,Lee Taylor) App developers don't believe in OS/2 yet.
(#23,jon cleary) bob they cost more to make
(#18,Matt Pollicove) Stinks, me thinks
(#43,Pat Maloney) too bad.

(#1,Dennis Sheridan) tell everyone who you are?
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) GA
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) Thanks, Dennis!
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) Hi, I'm Lou Miranda, a former Contributing Editor at
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) PC World magazine, and currently a Sysop for
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) PC World Online. GO PCWORLD or GO PWOFORUM to get there.
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) I just started writing an OS/2 Warp tips hypertext file.
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) It's called LouTip.Inf. You can find it as LouTip.Zip
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) on PWOFORUM. Thanks.
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) I thought Tim Sipples would be a good person to
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Now, Tim Stipples, who probably doesn't need an introductio
n..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) But, Tim?
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) GA
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) All set, Lou?
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) start offYes!
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Well, thanks to Lou for the invitation to stop by PC Worl
d's
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) conference tonight, and thank you to Dennis for moderatin
g.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I'm very pleased to see so many people here tonight, and
I hope
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) many of you will be able to pick up useful tips and trick
s on
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) how to get the most out of OS/2 Warp. A couple points of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) introduction, first. One is that, yes, I'm working hard
on the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp edition of the Frequently Asked Questions List.
I'd
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) say it's about 80% complete, but it is taking much more t
ime than
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I thought because practically every section had to be upd
ated to
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) reflect new things in OS/2 Warp. The current Frequently
Asked
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Questions List is filename FAQ21E.ZIP in the OS2USER libr
ary on
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) CompuServe. Second, if you do have specific support ques
tions
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) which I'm not able to address tonight, please stop by the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS2SUPPORT forum and download PROBLM.ZIP. This program l
ets
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you create a problem report which you can e-mail to IBM.
If
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you can't even get that far, be sure to visit the online
message
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) forums in OS2SUPPORT for advice and assistance. And now
I guess
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we're off to questions!
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) thanks, Tim. Lou, did you want to do something first?
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Thank, Tim.
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Before We start
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) with the question and answer period...
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) perhaps Lou would like to run this thing..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Loou, did you want to ask Tim some questions..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) and then have a question and answer period?
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) ga
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) Sure. How many copies of Warp has IBM sold, anyway?
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) On December 20th we announced that over 800,000 copies of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) IBM OS/2 Warp Version 3 have left our plant (which are th
e
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) best numbers we have) worldwide. That number makes us ve
ry
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) happy indeed, because our large corporate customers (who
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) have embraced OS/2 in big numbers) are not participating
in
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) these sales -- the upgrade for OS/2 2.x (with Win-OS/2) i
s
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) due next month. In other words, most of these copies of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp have been purchased by home, small business, an
d
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) other users who perhaps we've not done as well with as we
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) should have. We're very happy they're trying OS/2 Warp
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and recommending it to others.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) GA
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) My personal experience is that Warp sells out as soon as
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) they stock it at the local CompUSA and ComputerCIty stor
es. Now that
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) LANtastic for OS/2 has been released, there's finally
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) a peer to peer network system--and a great one at that.
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) What are IBM's plans for P2P networking?
(#56,Lou Miranda [PCW]) ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Right to the tough ones, eh? :-)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) IBM's plans for peer-to-peer networking. Well, as you
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) know the base OS/2 Warp package comes with what some
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people like to call "casual networking," namely the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) ability to dial up the Internet (and other online
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) services, including CompuServe) and do things that you
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) might ordinarily do over a network, but remotely. So,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) with the base package, you can send and receive Internet
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) mail, share a virtual chalkboard (using the included
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Person to Person software) to conduct a live computerized
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) "conference call," and so on. But I think what a lot of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people would like to see is a version of OS/2 Warp where
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you don't go out and buy networking software (software
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) that operates over a network card, such as a Novell
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) NetWare requester or peer-to-peer networking) "a la
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) carte." It's really a packaging issue more than one
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) of availability. That's what our so-called network
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) version of OS/2 Warp is for. This version of OS/2 Warp
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) will contain a larger BonusPak with extra applications
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for use with your network card, so you have flexibility,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) in one box, to connect with virtually any system. (And
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you can easily upgrade from the base OS/2 Warp by just
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) getting the larger BonusPak and adding it on.) That
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) release is just entering beta testing, and we're hoping
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we will be able to ship it some time in the spring
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (Northern Hemisphere), perhaps even early spring. Howeve
r,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) our testers will dictate how aggressive we are on the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) schedule, because we want to spend some time making the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) installation program for these various networking
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) pieces even smoother.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) GA
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Thanks, Tim...
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) before openning the floor to questions..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) I have one..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) The $6.00 an hour surcharge for Internet..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) access recently took a hit in Infoworld..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Do you have a comment of that, Tim?
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I read the article you are referring to.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Like CompuServe, Prodigy, or almost any other online
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) service, signing on to the Internet costs something to
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) somebody. Part of the culture of the Internet (one which
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I respect, by the way) is the free (emphasis on the word
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) free) exchange of information and ideas. With OS/2 Warp,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) when you sign on, there's some legalese which you're
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) supposed to read, then some more legalese. A lot of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) people didn't read it and, hence, when the first month's
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) bill came for usage charges, they were surprised that
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) access to the Internet through an 800 number cost more
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) than access through a local dial-up number (even though
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we did spell it out and recorded rate information, for
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) review later on, for each user). I thought the last
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) sentence in the Infoworld article was the most interestin
g,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) because it mentioned that Infoworld surveyed several
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Internet providers and found that none charged zero for
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) 800 number access, and the range was from $4 to $8.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) The IBM Global Network access was right in the middle of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the pack.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Anyway, connecting to the Internet is not, unfortunately,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) free, even if you think you're getting your access for
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) free. If you're at a university, connecting to the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Internet, you pay for it in your tuition. At a company,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) your company pays. There are some costs involved.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Fortunately you can shop around with OS/2 Warp. If you
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) don't like the IBM Global Network rates (which are the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) best around if you travel -- it's great if you're a
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) notebook user and need access to the Internet from
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) practically anywhere in the world), just use your favorit
e
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) local Internet provider -- any provider with SLIP or
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (now) PPP access. GA
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Thank you, Mr Sipples, I hope that clears up some problems.
.
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) with that little item..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) I'm going to now open the floor to questions..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Because of the large size of the crowd..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) I must limit one question per member..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) and then move on to the next in line..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) I hope you find this fair..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Please address your question to Mr Sipples, or Lou Miranda,
or myself..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Remmeber that this is your opportunity to talk..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) to the best OS/2 authority..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) and I suggest you direct your question to Mr. Sipples..
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) We begin
% Moderator recognizes question #1
Tom (6)
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Tom, your up.
(#6,Tom) Hello everyone....
(#6,Tom) My question, as many new WARP users...is about games...
(#6,Tom) are there any suggestions you can offer to improve DOS game perofrmance
?
(#6,Tom) (to anyone)
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Thanks, Tom.. Tim?
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Yes, there are. First off, there are 250+ games that
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) will be recognized by OS/2 Warp when you install it,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and all the optimum settings for those games will be
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) provided and an icon set up for the game.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Let's assume that you're talking about a DOS game.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) There are several steps you can take. First, take a
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) look at all the information located in your OS/2 Warp
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Information folder. Also, use the electronic
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) resources available to you, including CompuServe --
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) there's a great list of games settings that have been
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) compiled by OS/2 Warp users to help you. (I believe
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you'll find the list as GAMESXX.ZIP on most online
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) services, where XX is the version number.) Some of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the most common settings to try are:
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) HW_TIMER ON
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) IDLE_SENSITIVITY 100
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION (try both)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) SESSION_PRIORITY (boost slightly for performance)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) The last setting, SESSION_PRIORITY, is new to OS/2
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Warp. Use it carefully, because boosting it will
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) make other applications suffer in comparison.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Finally, run DOS games full screen (obviously)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for best performance, and you may wish to turn off
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) sound as a last resort for performance reasons again.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) GA
(#6,Tom) Great, those help alot..thanks!
% Moderator recognizes question #2
bob Ward (3)
(#3,bob Ward) mr. sipples, I am a heavy spreadsheet uiser and wonder if the lotu
s 123 for o/s2 files can be read by non o/s2 2 machines without any
(#3,bob Ward) problems in conversion
(#3,bob Ward) ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Bob, Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2 does indeed use a different
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) file format as its native file format, but the latest
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) version of the Lotus Smartsuite (with the new
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) ValuePak) allows Lotus 1-2-3 to import and export
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the common spreadsheet formats, including now Excel.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) If you need to share Lotus 1-2-3 for OS/2 spreadsheets
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) with other users, be sure to save in their format
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) if they're not so fortunate to have OS/2 Warp.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) GA
% Moderator recognizes question #3
Anthony Lang (77)
(#77,Anthony Lang) I am wondering about people thinking about OS2 who have older
(#77,Anthony Lang) machines like my 386 with a 5 1/2 "a" drive and 1988 bios
(#77,Anthony Lang) will these be able to use Warp without major mods? ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Anthony, by and large, yes. However, to make the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) decision easier, we've decided to do a few things
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) with OS/2 Warp. One is that we ask that dealers for
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp have a 30 day no questions asked money back
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) guarantee. If you're not satisfied with the product,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you can return it. (The length of time is often
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) extended if you're actively working with our technical
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) support to resolve any problems, and we can't solve
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) it for you.) Second, we publish a list of tested PCs
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) where we've run OS/2 Warp and determined that it works
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) correctly, without fuss. That's called the PCM Table
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (PCM for PC manufacturers), and you can often find it
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) as PCMTBL.ZIP or PCMTABLE.ZIP on the online services
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (including CompuServe, of course). So, if you have a nam
e
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) brand system, check the list.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) GA
% Moderator recognizes question #4
Jz Lauratis (93)
(#93,Jz Lauratis) Mr. Sipples doesthe upgrade for O/S 2 2.x
(#93,Jz Lauratis) include windows & if no, when will the windows included
(#93,Jz Lauratis) version ship and is there any advantage to buying the full ver
sion? GA
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Good question. The difference between versions of OS/2
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Warp is pretty simple, actually. One (OS/2 Warp Version
3)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) iis designed to use a copy of Windows or Windows for Work
groups
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) that's already on your hard disk to run Windows applicati
ons.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (If you don't have Windows, you can still run DOS and OS/
2
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) applications with this version.) The other (OS/2 Warp
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Version 3 with Win-OS/2) contains a copy of Windows, from
IBM,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) right in the box, and that copy of Windows (Win-OS/2) is
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) designed to install right along with OS/2 Warp itself (in
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) one process).
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) That's the difference, and it means the following...
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (1) If you have Windows already, you'll probably want OS/
2
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Warp Version 3 (the box with the red spine).
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (2) If you have just DOS (no Windows), and do not want to
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) run Windows applications, OS/2 Warp Version 3.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (3) If you have OS/2 for Windows, OS/2 Warp Version 3 is
also
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) your upgrade.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (4) If you don't even have DOS, and don't want to run Win
dows
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) applications, OS/2 Warp Version 3 is still your version.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (5) If you have OS/2 2.x, then OS/2 Warp Version 3 with W
in-OS/2
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) is your upgrade. This version is targeted for January re
lease
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) if all goes well.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (6) If you have DOS (no Windows), or no operating system
at all,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and want to run Windows applications, then OS/2 Warp Vers
ion 3
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) with Win-OS/2 (blue spine box) is your version as well.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) That's really it. Now, given that Win-OS/2 is right in t
he box,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and there's only one installation involved, that may be o
f
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) some advantage, particularly if you use OS/2 Warp's High
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Performance File System (HPFS), but, by and large, the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) differences are no greater than I just relayed to you. G

% Moderator recognizes question #5
Greg (61)
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Grag, you're up!
(#61,Greg) Yes I have one about
(#61,Greg) Sound Blaster
(#61,Greg) In windows it is set on way
(#61,Greg) and OS2 says it is set a different way
(#61,Greg) Do you know why OS2 will Not read my Card the right way?
(#61,Greg) ga
(#61,Greg) DId you get that
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Greg, that's a tough one to diagnose over the wire here,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) but I'll try a stab at it. In writing a brand new
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) section in the OS/2 Warp Frequently Asked Questions List,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I tried to ponder the question of how I should talk about
% Idle timeout imminent. Enter
any command or <CR> to continue
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) hardware configuration, and what were the most important
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) points I could talk about. I also took the time to
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) editorialize a bit on the issue because my own thinking
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) has evolved.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) This will take a couple lines, and hopefully it isn't too
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) basic, but here we go. There are four "things" which all
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) PC devices may use: port I/O addresses, interrupts (IRQs)
,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) memory address space, and DMA channels. These are
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) resources available to devices in your PC. Each device
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) has to use a unique set of hardware resources. (One devi
ce
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) can't use the same DMA channel as another, for example.)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Exception: Microchannel, which does permit sharing, but I
'm
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) talking about AT bus at the moment.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) All this dates back to 1981, when the original PC was
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) designed, and, frankly, it's one big bother, and it's
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) causing a lot of headaches, because you shouldn't have to
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) worry about all these things. But, in fact, we live in a
n
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) imperfect world, and decisions made by market forces
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) decided that PCs weren't going to be as easy to configure
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) as they might otherwise be (from a hardware standpoint).
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Software -- all software -- has to deal with these
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) things as best it can. What I do, though, is I literally
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) treat my PC as a patient, and I create a chart for it,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) listing all those precious resources (especially
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) interrupts) to make sure that nothing is conflicting, and
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) every time I take something out, or put something in, or
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) flip a switch on something, I make sure I put a note on t
he
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) chart. That way I know what the hardware is doing, and I
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) know better than the software.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp is looking at your Windows WIN.INI file to try

(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Steve?
(#5,Steve Aughinbaugh) I have been using Warp on 3 different PCs and it is work
well on all of them...
(#5,Steve Aughinbaugh) but, there are a few problems and I wanted to know when y

(#5,Steve Aughinbaugh) Tim, I have installed Warp on 3 PCs and it is working wel
l
(#5,Steve Aughinbaugh) on all of them...but, there are a few problems from time
(#5,Steve Aughinbaugh) to time. When do you expect the first Warp CSD to appear
?
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Steve is talking about CSDs (so-called Corrective Service
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Diskettes), which we've renamed with the much more
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) English language sounding Service Pak name. A Service Pa
k
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) is a collection of fixes with an integrated installation
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) program. (Sometimes some real feature enhancements sneak
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) in, too.) They are available free of charge electronical
ly,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) or for the cost of disks, shipping, and handling if you w
ant
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) disks or CD-ROM. Anyway, we release fixes to our softwar
e
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) products on an ad hoc basis quite often -- there are a sm
all
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) handful in existence for OS/2 Warp, in fact. They are gi
ven
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) out when you contact technical support and need a fix to
a
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (usually obscure) problem.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OK, introduction aside, we've been averaging somewhere
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (very roughly speaking) six to twelve months between Serv
ice
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Paks for our software products. I don't think there's an
y
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) reason to expect otherwise with OS/2 Warp.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) By the way, if you ever want to determine the maintenance

Paul F. Finman (9)
(#1,Dennis Sheridan) Paul?
(#9,Paul F. Finman) Does OS/2 have any special features making it superior for a
small LAN for say 30 computers.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) You bet, Paul. Gosh, where do I start?
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Well, one of the biggest advantages I think is that
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp is truly rare (probably unique) in that it
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) does a wonderful job as either a client or a server.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (We'll be giving away a copy of IBM OS/2 LAN Server
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Version 4 tonight, in fact, as the grand prize.)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) So you only have one operating system to learn when
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) you set up and configure your network. You don't have
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) to become, say, a DOS _and_ NetWare expert. Lessons
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) and tips learned on the client work just fine on the
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) server. (Really the terms server and client lose a lot
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) of meaning with OS/2 Warp -- we like to use the term
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) "nondedicated server" a lot.)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp ships with a lot of products which scale up
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) very nicely in a small network. Person to Person is
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) an excellent example (the virtual chalkboard and
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) videoconferencing features that come with OS/2 Warp
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) that I was talking about). You can also mix and match
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) products like Artisoft's LANtastic for OS/2. If you
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) don't think you need a "dedicated" server, you can
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) use peer-to-peer networking, then adjust upward as your
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) needs increase. OS/2 Warp systems work well as
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) gateways, as Lotus Notes servers and clients, as
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) remote dial-in network access systems, as name servers,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) as... well, you get the idea.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) As far as applications, you give everyone the ability
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) to choose from the among their favorite and best
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) DOS, Windows, and OS/2 applications -- a giant
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) selection.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Anyway, that might sound like marketing, but I'm
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) a genuine OS/2 enthusiast because it has solved so
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) many of my own problems with PCs. I got started with
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 for a very basic reason: I wanted to have my modem
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) operate while I got some other work done. And, you
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) know what? It does that great, and the competition still
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) hasn't figured it out. :-) End of sermon... :-)

(#67,Jim Reinhart) products, Wall Data Mainframe APPC connectivity ... use Warp

(#67,Jim Reinhart) Windows for showing off their products abilities.
(#67,Jim Reinhart) What is IBM doing to promote the increased productivity attai
nable of these
(#67,Jim Reinhart) products using Warp over Brand X?
(#67,Jim Reinhart) ga
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Lots, so it would be difficult to answer that in just a f
ew words.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) I'll try to summarize a few, in no particular order.
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) By way of introduction, though, you probably have noticed
that
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we've been very different in our marketing of OS/2 Warp,
because
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) we've aimed it squarely at the "consumer" side of the sof
tware
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) business. That doesn't mean we're not paying attention t
o
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) our more traditional customers. To cite Infoworld again
(and I
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) think they got it right here), to paraphrase, IBM was aim
ing
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for home and small business users with OS/2 Warp, adding
more
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) consumer oriented-features. But, as Infoworld said, we m
issed
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the mark in the sense that our larger customers care ever
y bit
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) as much about these very same features (like the LaunchPa
d,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Internet connectivity, etc).
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OK, to be more specific... If you saw any of the announc
ement
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) of OS/2 Warp (the announcement event that took place in N
ew
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) York and which was broadcast via satellite to many locati
ons
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) around the world), you may have noticed our focusing our
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) attention on talking about people who use OS/2 for one si
mple
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) reason: it works. We talked about automatic teller machi
nes,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) for example. (OS/2 runs on the ATMs throughout Russia th
at
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) are being installed as quickly as possible, for example.)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Or for running SwissAir's entire crew scheduling operatio
n
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) (with an application they developed called CPA-2000). Or
for
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the London Press Assoc. Or for many other companies arou
nd
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the world, large and small, betting their businesses on
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2-based solutions. (My local favorite, here in Chicag
o,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) ironically, is Carson's Ribs. When you dial 312-CARSONS,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) the best known BBQ ribs start with an OS/2-based PC,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) handling all the calls that come in.) We keep track of
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) these success stories, we tell press and other customers
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) about them, to the point where, for example, if we're
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) meeting with people in the retail industry, we can talk
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) about other retailers (with their permission) who are
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) having great success with OS/2. And we can also feature
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) such successes in our advertising. (You may have seen th
e
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) OS/2 Warp print advertising featuring Mazda, for example.
)
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Anyway, I could go on, but I agree with the thrust of you
r
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) assessment, and we're doing what we can to spread the wor
d
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) as widely as possible. I will say that OS/2 enthusiasts,
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) Team OS/2, and OS/2 Warp users are far and away the best
(#20,T. Sipples [IBM]) folks for word of mouth advertising, and you're doing a
