  413. How to migrate the boot partition from FAT to HPFS

  416. Some time ago I asked how I might migrate my boot partition from FAT to
  417. HPFS.  What I had in mind was something like:
  418.  
  419.     a.  backup FAT C: to tape
  420.     b.  boot from an emergency floppy set
  421.     c.  format C: as an HPFS drive
  422.     d.  restore tape to HPFS C:
  423.  
  424. This doesn't work because the boot process recognises that the drive is
  425. "supposed" to be FAT.  The only suggestions amounted to reinstalling the
  426. first 5 disks of OS/2 to "prepare" the HPFS drive for booting.
  427.  
  428. I've finally worked out how to do convert from FAT to HPFS quickly and
  429. easily.  There's a hidden file called \OS2BOOT that controls the booting
  430. process and it's quite different for FAT and HPFS:
  431.  
  432.     FAT:    \OS2BOOT, 1099 bytes
  433.     HPFS:   \OS2BOOT, 50318 bytes
  434.  
  435. The program SYSINSTX.COM on installation disk 0 creates the appropriate
  436. \OS2BOOT for the file system.
  437.  
  438. After steps a-d above, add a final step before rebooting from the "new"
  439. HPFS C: drive:
  440.  
  441.     e.  execute the command "SYSINSTX C:" from the emergency floppy set or
  442.         the OS/2 "installation diskette"
  443.  
  444. If you have a reliable tape backup system (e.g. GTak, BakupWiz), it's
  445. ever so easy to convert that last remaining FAT partition to HPFS.  (If
  446. you want to go from HPFS to FAT, the same procedure applies.)
