OS/2 V2 is available on BOTH 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch diskette versions.
Unfortuately, some users have received (or can only obtain) the 3.5 inch
versions, while their systems are setup with a 5.25 inch A: drive and a
3.5 inch B: drive. Most users can swap these around (change cables, reset
cmos) and boot the OS/2 install from the 3.5 inch versions. But some systems
are restricted by cable connectors or cable length. For those users which
have the wrong diskette sizes, and cannot change the system hardware setup
the following should help....
NOTE: OS/2 is *NOT* an application, and as such MUST be booted from a drive.
There is no "install" procedure on the diskettes. If you were running
UNIX on your PS/2, and decided to install DRDOS, you would not expect
to be able to run a UNIX "install" script from the DRDOS install diskette
to install.. OS/2 is in a similar position, it is a "foreign" operating
system to the current running one, and as such cannot use a "install"
procedure. It MUST be booted to install...
These are the instructions to use when installing OS/2 V2 with the modified
install procedure for a 5.25 (1.2 meg) inch A: drive and a 3.5 inch (1.44)
B: drive and you cannot swap them to use the 3.5 inch as an A: drive.
REQUIRED:
2 X 5.25 inch ** 1.2 MEG ** formated diskettes
INST525I.EXE - A 5 1/4" OS/2 2.0 Install diskette image.
INST525B.EXE - A 5 1/4" special diskette image required to allow you to
install from the B: drive with 3 1/2" diskettes.
You will need to create working 5 1/4" (1.2 meg) diskettes from the
above 2 files.
The syntax to unpack the files is
INST525I A:
NOTE: Label this diskette Install Diskette.
INST525B A:
NOTE: Label this diskette MODIFIED Install Diskette.
There is a file on the MODIFIED Install Diskette, README2 which follows
here... This is how to use the 2 diskettes in this package, and your
3 1/2" diskettes to install OS/2 2.0 WITHOUT altering your system setup
using both the A: bootable 5 1/4" diskettes created with these images and
the 3 1/2" diskettes OS/2 2.0 was shipped to you on.
--------------------
This modified version of the 5.25 inch IBM OS/2 2.0 Diskette 1 allows
you to install on a system with a 5.25 inch, 1.2 MB (bootable) drive A
and a 3.5 inch, 1.44 MB drive B. To install, you will need a 5.25 inch
IBM OS/2 2.0 Installation Diskette, this Diskette 1 and all of your 3.5
inch Installation diskettes.
To install, follow these steps:
1. Insert the 5.25 inch OS/2 Installation Diskette into drive A.
2. Insert the 3.5 inch OS/2 Installation Diskette 1 into drive
B.
3. Turn on your computer or press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
4. When prompted, insert this modified version of the OS/2
Installation Diskette 1 into drive A and press Enter.
NOTE: Do NOT remove this diskette from drive A until
hard disk preparation is complete.
5. The panels during install will ask you to remove
the diskette from drive A and insert the next diskette
into the drive. At these panels, remove and insert
the requested 3.5 inch diskettes into drive B.
