  1.                     About Joining Fidonet

  4. Fidonet membership is not to be taken lightly.  Every member has
  5. certain responsibilities, set forth in Fidonet Policy 4.  There is
  6. really only one rule -- that you run an FTS-0001 compliant mailer
  7. during ZoneMailHour (ZMH) daily.

  9. Fidonet is open to any and all comers who are able to meet the ZMH
  10. technical requirement, but is not something you join on the spur of
  11. the moment without understanding your responsibilities.  You will
  12. really need to have at least a basic understanding of how Fidonet
  13. and your FTS-0001 compliant software work.  The best way to gain
  14. this knowledge is to both participate as a user on an existing Fido-
  15. BBS, and to set up your own not-yet-linked-to-Fidonet BBS.  Once you
  16. have a basic understanding of what Fidonet provides and how your
  17. software does this, you are ready to proceed with joining as an
  18. official member.

  20. Don't let this scare you -- virtually nobody knows what's going on
  21. when they first join.  There will be plenty of time for questions
  22. and usually tons of help available to you later.  Waiting until you
  23. have a little bit of understanding will simply ease the process for
  24. both yourself and your Net Coordinator.  Remember that your NC is
  25. just a hobbyist too, has plenty of work to do already, and often
  26. has several other newcomers like yourself needing help at any given
  27. time.

  30. How To Join Fidonet

  33. Step 1:  Gain a basic understanding of Fidonet and your software.
  34.          Download the POLICY4.ZIP document from a nearby FidoNet BBS.
  35.          Read this thoroughly.  Then read it again.
  36.          Do the same with your software's documentation.  You will
  37.          also need a current copy of the Fidonet Nodelist.

  39. Step 2:  Set up your BBS.  Make sure it operates correctly, to the
  40.          best of your knowledge.

  42. Step 3:  Follow, to the letter, the procedure outlined in POLICY4
  43.          for joining Fidonet.  The request *MUST* come in as a
  44.          Netmail message.  This shows the NC that your system is
  45.          indeed capable of exchanging mail -- the basic requirement
  46.          for membership.  Do NOT request a node number in a local
  47.          message on your NC's system, it will only delay the
  48.          process, and may even be simply ignored.

  50. Step 4:  Be patient.  It may take up to 2 weeks for your request to
  51.          be fully processed and appear in the Nodelist.  Remember
  52.          that your NC may not be able to contact you at all until
  53.          your address becomes official.
