The DiskSpace program is shareware. If you use the program regularly and are interested in having us continue to develop it and other such programs, you should register the program with us. You may register DiskSpace for $4.00. In order to register, fill in the Register.Txt form, make out a check payable to Leland C. Sheppard and mail both to the address shown above.
If you are interested in the Utility Pack and you have a Compuserve ID and you prefer to register online, simply Go SWREG and register #6193 for UTLPAR.ZIP or #6194 for UTLPAK.ZIP. Because of price constraints on SWREG, only the Utility Pack can be registered online; individual programs may be registered directly with us as described in the preceding paragraph.
Please note that this file can be accessed either from the Sheppard Utilities folder or by pressing F1 when DiskSpace is active and has the focus on the desktop.
DiskSpace was written in VX-REXX 2.1 and requires the VX-REXX 2.1 (or higher) runtime module (VROBJ.DLL) in order to function. Also, REXX and REXXUTIL must be installed on your system; both REXX and REXXUTIL come with OS/2. File DSKSPR.ZIP contains the VROBJ.DLL module; file DSKSPC.ZIP does not. Only one copy of VROBJ.DLL is required for all of the VX-REXX programs on your system; if you have previously downloaded a copy of it, you do NOT need to download it again.
Although the program will list information for CD drives and network drives, these drives are NOT included in the overall totals or in the percent used unless you check the All Drives check box.
In order to determine whether or not the file system in use is FAT, HPFS or CDFS, DiskSpace uses the technique described by Jaime A. Cruz: an attempt is made to allocate a directory name that would only be valid on an HPFS partition. If the result is that the directory can be allocated, we know that the file system in use is HPFS; if the result indicates that the request was illegal, we can assume that the file type is FAT, otherwise, it must be CDFS. For HPFS partitions, the directory that was allocated is then removed. Please note that this scheme only works reliably with local drives; network drives will always be marked as 'Netw' if you do not have write access to them.
HOW TO OPERATE DiskSpace:
When DiskSpace starts it will automatically display its information for all hard drives and CD drives on your system whether local drives or network drives.
In order to refresh the disk space amounts, press Again.
In order to have DiskSpace do a continuous scan of the available space, check the check box and press the AGAIN button. Unchecking the check box will stop the scan.
If you want CD and/or network drive information included in the total line, check the All Drives box. To exclude these drives, simply uncheck the box if it is checked.
If you want to print the contents of the display to device PRN:, press Print.
There are 3 ways to end DiskSpace: Press the Exit button, double click on the button in the upper left corner of the DiskSpace window or press Alt-F4.
LIMITATIONS:
Currently, network drives are displayed as 'Netw' if you do NOT have write access to those drives.
