  107. The taskbar program allows rapid switching among multiple running programs by 
  108. providing a popup button bar containing a list of all running programs in the 
  109. system. The taskbar is activated by moving the mouse cursor to a user 
  110. selectable edge of the screen. The desired task can then be selected by 
  111. clicking on the appropriate button with the mouse. In order to re-hide the 
  112. taskbar, simply move the mouse cursor outside of the taskbar.

  114. Taskbar also has a hot key switching capability similar to the Alt-Tab feature 
  115. found in Windows. 
  116.  
  117. Taskbar is shareware with a 30 day evaluation period. The registration fee is 
  118. $15.00 per copy (see the 'Registration information' section in this document 
  119. for information on registering). If you are running an unregistered version of 
  120. the program, a nag dialog will come up the first time the program is run, and 
  121. every time the program is started after the 30 day trial period has expired.

  209.    5. After the installation has completed, you may safely delete the contents 
  210.       of the temporary directory created in step 1 (but don't delete your 
  211.       downloaded ZIP archive -- you'll need it if you ever need to reinstall).

  215.  When installation is complete, if necessary, the taskbar program directory 
  216.  will have been added to the LIBPATH and HELP statements in your Config.Sys, 
  217.  the Taskbar class will have been registered with the Workplace Shell, and a 
  218.  folder containing the various taskbar program and documentation objects will 
  219.  have been created on your desktop. In addition, install places a shadow of the 
  220.  Taskbar object in your startup folder. The following files will have been 
  221.  placed in your taskbar program directory:

  235.  After installation, the on-line help file can be accessed by activating the 
  236.  popup menu on the taskbar object and selecting the 'Help' menu item. On-line 
  237.  help can also be accessed by double-clicking on the 'User Guide' object in the 
  238.  Taskbar folder.

  240.  The install procedure will create a log file named 'TASKBAR.LOG' in the root 
  241.  directory of your boot drive. If you encounter a problem during the install 
  242.  process, please enclose a copy of this log file with your problem report. You 
  243.  may safely delete this file once the install process has completed 
  244.  successfully. 
  245.  
  246.  OS/2 2.1 users 
  247.  
  248.  The installation program requires that OS/2 REXX support be installed. If REXX 
  249.  support is not installed, you will need to do an OS/2 selective install and 
  250.  install REXX support before installing Taskbar. 
  251.  
  252.  If you later upgrade from OS/2 2.1 to OS/2 Warp, you should reinstall the 
  253.  taskbar program so that you can use the Warp optimized version of the program. 
  254.  
  255.  Upgrading from previous versions 
  256.  
  257.  If you are upgrading from a previous version of Taskbar, do *NOT* try to keep 
  258.  multiple versions of the program installed at the same time. 
  259.  
  260.  Upgrading from v2.00 or lower 
  261.  
  262.  If you are currently using version 2.00 or lower of Taskbar, before installing 
  263.  this upgrade: 
  264.  
  265.    1. Delete the taskbar shadow object from your startup folder. 
  266.    2. Delete the taskbar program object from your desktop. 
  267.    3. Delete all instances of the files Taskbar.EXE and TskBarHk.DLL from your 
  268.       hard drive. 
  269.  
  270.  Upgrading from v2.5x 
  271.  
  272.  No special actions are necessary if you are installing over an existing copy 
  273.  of version 2.50 or 2.51 of Taskbar. You will be required, however, to install 
  274.  this upgrade into the same directory in which the current version is 
  275.  installed. Note that the installation procedure will fix your LIBPATH 
  276.  statement so that the entry for the taskbar directory will come after the 
  277.  entry for the '.' directory (this is needed to keep installs of future 
  278.  versions from failing). 
  279.  
  280.  If you wish to install the new version of the program into a different 
  281.  directory than the current version, you will need to uninstall your existing 
  282.  copy of 2.5x before installing the new version. Version 2.5x can be 
  283.  uninstalled by doing the following: 
  284.  
  285.    1. Start the INSTALL.EXE program included with your copy of version 2.62. 
  286.    2. Push the 'Uninstall' button. 
  287.    3. Follow the prompts. 
  288.  
  289.  Upgrading from 2.60 and above 
  290.  
  291.  If you are currently using version 2.60 or higher of Taskbar, you must install 
  292.  this upgrade into the same directory in which the current version is 
  293.  installed. If you want to change directories, you must uninstall the old 
  294.  version before installing the new version.

  301. If, for some reason, you should need to uninstall the program do the following: 
  302.  
  303.    1. Open the taskbar folder. 
  304.  
  305.    2. Double-click on the Uninstall icon. 
  306.  
  307.    3. Follow the prompts. 
  308.  
  309.  If you received your copy of taskbar on diskette, you may also uninstall by: 
  310.  
  311.    1. Insert the program disk in a diskette drive. 
  312.  
  313.    2. From the desktop, open the icon view of the diskette drive.

  315.    3. Double-click on the 'INSTALL.EXE'  object. 
  316.

  321.  If you received your copy of taskbar by downloading a ZIPped archive file, you 
  322.  may also uninstall by:

  328.    3. Run the installation program by typing 
  329.

  339.  The uninstall procedure will:

  341.    1. Delete the taskbar objects from your desktop and deregister the Taskbar

  344.    2. Delete the taskbar program files from your hard drive.

  346.    3. If the appropriate check boxes in the uninstall dialog box are checked, 
  347.       remove the taskbar directory from the LIBPATH and SET HELP= statements in 
  348.       your Config.Sys. 
  349.  
  350.    4. Delete all references to taskbar from your OS2.INI file. 
  351.  
  352.  If uninstall encountered any locked files or if any modifications were made to 
  353.  your Config.Sys, you will be told to shutdown your system and reboot. 
  354.  
  355.  Warning: Do NOT try to uninstall this program by manually deleting files from 
  356.  the OS/2 command line. You MUST use the provided Uninstall program. 
  357.  
  358.  The uninstall procedure will create a log file named 'TASKBAR.LOG' in the root 
  359.  directory of your boot drive. If you encounter a problem during the uninstall 
  360.  process, please enclose a copy of this log file with your problem report. You 
  361.  may safely delete this file once the uninstall process has completed 
  362.  successfully.

  369. By default, a shadow of the Taskbar program object is installed in the 
  370. Workplace Shell startup folder, so Taskbar will be automatically started when 
  371. the system is started, thus no user intervention should be necessary to startup 
  372. the program. An alternative method of starting Taskbar if the Taskbar object in 
  373. the startup folder has been deleted, is to double-click on the Taskbar object 
  374. that was installed into the Taskbar folder.

  377. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Using the program ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  378.  
  379. In order to display the taskbar, move the mouse pointer to the edge of the 
  380. screen where the taskbar is to be shown (on initial install this is set to the 
  381. bottom of the screen). The taskbar will remain visible as long as the mouse 
  382. pointer remains over the taskbar. Moving the mouse pointer over a button will 
  383. cause a small bubble help window to appear containing the text description of 
  384. the program. Press the appropriate button with the mouse to switch to the 
  385. desired task. 
  386.  
  387. Programs may be minimized/hidden by double-clicking with mouse button one on 
  388. the taskbar button associated with the desired program. Pressing both mouse 
  389. buttons simultaneously on a program's taskbar button will close the program. 
  390.  
  391. If more programs are running than can be fit in the taskbar, the two scroll 
  392. buttons on either end of the taskbar will be enabled, allowing you to scroll 
  393. through the list of programs. 
  394.  
  395. Right clicking on a task button will display a popup menu  containing the 
  396. following items: 
  397.  
  398.      Menu item                Description 
  399.  
  400.      Close                    Closes the selected program. You may also close 
  401.                               programs by pointing to the program's task button 
  402.                               and pressing both mouse buttons. 
  403.  
  404.      Show                     Makes the selected program's window visible on 
  405.                               the desktop, places it in front of all other open 
  406.                               windows, and switches to the program. This option 
  407.                               is equivalent to pressing the task button with 
  408.                               the left mouse button. 
  409.  
  410.      Minimize                 Minimizes the selected program's window. Programs 
  411.                               can also be minimized by double-clicking with 
  412.                               mouse button one on the program's task button. 
  413.  
  414.      Hide                     Hides the selected program's window. Programs can 
  415.                               also be hidden by double-clicking with mouse 
  416.                               button one on the program's task button. 
  417.  
  418.      Restore                  Restores the selected program's window to its 
  419.                               original size. 
  420.  
  421.      Ignore                   Removes the selected program from the window 
  422.                               list. Taskbar will remember from one session to 
  423.                               the next whether a program is to be ignored. See 
  424.                               also the help for the 'Ignore' page in the 
  425.                               settings notebook.

  427.      Close all                Closes all running programs. 
  428.  
  429.      Minimize all             Minimizes the windows for all currently running 
  430.                               programs.

  432.      Taskbar settings         Displays the taskbar program settings notebook.

  434.      Shutdown taskbar         Shuts down the taskbar program. 
  435.  
  436.  Note that, depending on the type and state of the program's frame window, one 
  437.  or more of the menu choices could be disabled. For example, the 'Restore' item 
  438.  will only be enabled if the program's frame window is minimized or maximized.

  441.  popup menu  with the following items:

  464. Taskbar contains a hot key capability similar to that provided by the Windows 
  465. Alt-Tab feature. The hot keys on program installation are set to the following: 
  466.  
  467.      Ctrl+Alt+'>'        Browse forward through window list. 
  468.  
  469.      Ctrl+Alt+'<'        Browse backward through window list. 
  470.  
  471.  Press and hold down Ctrl+Alt and press '>' (or '<') repeatedly until the name 
  472.  of the application that you want to switch to appears. When you release the 
  473.  shift keys, the dialog box will disappear and the system will switch to the 
  474.  selected application. The task list is sorted by window z-order, so that 
  475.  browsing forward through the list will take you to the most recently used 
  476.  programs.

  478.  Note:  the hot key capability is not accessible from within full-screen 
  479.         sessions. 
  480.  
  481.  Using non-US keyboards 
  482.  
  483.  At installation, the hot key feature is assigned to the Ctrl+Alt+'<' and 
  484.  Ctrl+Alt+'>' keys. On the US keyboard, the '<' and ',' symbols and the '>' and 
  485.  '.' symbols are assigned to the same keys. If you are using a non-US keyboard, 
  486.  try activating the hot key feature using Ctrl+Alt+',' and Ctrl+Alt+'.'. If 
  487.  these key combinations don't work, you will need to go to the Keys page of the 
  488.  Taskbar settings notebook and set the hot key assignments to something that is 
  489.  compatible with your keyboard.

  496. Various aspects of Taskbar can be customized through the settings notebook. The 
  497. settings notebook is accessed by right clicking somewhere on the taskbar and 
  498. selecting the 'Taskbar settings' option on the resulting popup menu. Changes 
  499. made to any taskbar settings take effect when you press the 'Ok' button in the 
  500. settings notebook. Settings changes can be canceled by pressing the 'Cancel' 
  501. button.

  517. This page is where you enter the name and id number that you receive when you 
  518. register the program. To register, enter in the spaces provided, your name and 
  519. id exactly as it is listed on your registration card, then press the 'Register' 
  520. button. If you have correctly entered the registration information, a message 
  521. box will appear saying that the program has been successfully registered, and 
  522. the 'Register' page will be removed from the settings notebook.

  529. The 'Location' page controls various aspects of the appearance of the taskbar. 
  530. At the top of the page are radio buttons used to control the edge of the screen 
  531. where the taskbar is located. Clicking on the top button causes the taskbar to 
  532. be located at the top of the screen, the bottom button causes the taskbar to be 
  533. located at the bottom of the screen, etc. Remember that the taskbar is 
  534. activated by moving the mouse cursor to the edge of the screen where the 
  535. taskbar will be displayed. 
  536.  
  537. The four groups of radio buttons located in the corners are used to cause the 
  538. taskbar to be activated when the mouse cursor is moved into the corresponding 
  539. corner of the screen. Whether the taskbar is to be displayed horizontally or 
  540. vertically is controlled by which of the two corner radio buttons you select. 
  541.  
  542. The delay setting allows you set the amount of time that the mouse cursor must 
  543. remain on the activation edge of the screen before the taskbar will be 
  544. displayed. 
  545.  
  546. When the 'Use Z-Order sorting' checkbox is checked, the task list will be 
  547. sorted by window z-order. This causes the most recently used applications to 
  548. appear at the beginning of the task list. When this checkbox is not checked, 
  549. programs are listed by startup order with the most recently started programs 
  550. listed first.

  573. There are two ways to set the color and font.

  575.    1. Drag and drop from a color or font palette:

  577.       The easy way to change the color and font is by dragging the desired 
  578.       color or font from one of the OS/2 color or font palettes and dropping it 
  579.       on the sample region. To set the text color, hold down the control key 
  580.       while dragging a color from the color palette.

  582.    2. Using the 'Text' page pushbuttons: 
  583.  
  584.       Pushing the 'Text color...' or 'Background color...' buttons causes the 
  585.       system to display the following color selection dialog box: Move the 
  586.       slider controls to increase or decrease the red, green, and blue 
  587.       components of the color. The sample area will be continuously updated to 
  588.       reflect whatever color changes you have made.

  596. The taskbar program has the capability to always display a line along the 
  597. activation edge of the screen as a visual indicator of the current setting of 
  598. the taskbar location. The 'Show taskbar location' checkbox on the 'Indicator' 
  599. settings page controls whether this indicator line is to be displayed. The 
  600. width of the indicator line can be set through the 'location line width' spin 
  601. button to any value between 1 and 5 pixels wide. The color of the indicator 
  602. line can be changed by clicking on any one of the colors displayed in the 
  603. 'Location line color' value set.

  608. The 'Keys' page is used to control the hot key assignments. Use the 'Enable hot 
  609. keys' checkbox to enable/disable the hot key feature.

  611. The assigned hot keys are a combination of the shift keys selected in the shift 
  612. key checkboxes plus the keys listed in the 'Forward' and 'Reverse' entry 
  613. fields.

  615. To set the hot key assignments, first select the checkboxes associated with the 
  616. shift keys that are part of your hot keys assignments. Note that at least one 
  617. shift key must be selected and that shift key assignment will be the same for 
  618. both the forward and reverse hot keys. To assign the forward hot key, select 
  619. the entry field labeled 'Forward' and press the key you want assigned (note: do 
  620. not hold down any shift keys). The name of the assigned key will then appear in 
  621. the entry field. To assign the reverse hot key, select the entry field labeled 
  622. 'Reverse' and repeat the above procedure.

  633. ignore and window lists, select the item(s) that you want to move and press the

  638. ignored by Taskbar will also be marked as invisible in the system window list

  671.     around by turning the taskbar indicator line off.

  673.     If you are running OS/2 2.x, DOS sessions and OS/2 character mode sessions 
  674.     will be displayed in the taskbar using a generic system icon.

  676.     If the 'Wrap Pointer On Screen Border' option in the NPS WPS Enhancer is 
  677.     enabled you will not be able to activate the taskbar. A workaround for this 
  678.     problem is to set the taskbar activation edge to a corner of the screen and 
  679.     set the Effective Area in the NPS WPS Enhancer to a value less than 100%
