  4. The FontFolder Install program is for use with FontFolder 3.0 and later 
  5. versions. It provides facilities for 
  6.  
  7.      Installing FontFolder 
  8.  
  9.      Uninstalling FontFolder (3.0 and later versions) 
  10.  
  11.      Recreating FontFolder's Ini file 
  12.  
  13.      Recreating FontFolder's Desktop object (icon) 
  14.  
  15.  See the individual subject headings for detailed information on how to perform 
  16.  each operation.

  19. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Installing FontFolder ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  20.  
  21. To install FontFolder using the Install program, choose Install from the menu 
  22. bar. You will be presented with a dialog that provides choices for the location 
  23. of the source directory and for several possible target directories 
  24.  
  25. Source Directory 
  26.  
  27. The Source Directory is the directory containing the FontFolder installation 
  28. files. This is initally set to the location from which you started the 
  29. FontFolder Install program, and this should not need to be changed. 
  30.  
  31. Target Directories 
  32.  
  33. You can either install all of FontFolder's files in one directory (the default 
  34. installation), or you can choose to separate the files in up to 3 locations. 
  35. The location for the FontFolder Executable Files (.exe files) is the base 
  36. location where you are installing FontFolder. Fill in this entry with the 
  37. location where you want to put FontFolder. When you tab out of this field or 
  38. hit the Enter key, two things will happen: 
  39.  
  40.      If the directory you have specified doesn't exist you will be asked if 
  41.       you want it to be created 
  42.  
  43.      Both of the following target directory entries will be changed to match 
  44.       the Executable Files entry. 
  45.  
  46.  Default Installation 
  47.  
  48.  If you are satisified with the default of keeping all files in this directory, 
  49.  you can click on the Continue button to begin the installation. 
  50.  
  51.  Optional Installation 
  52.  
  53.  In addition to the default installation, you have two additional options: 
  54.  
  55.      Help Files - If you prefer to keep all your Help files together in a 
  56.       single location, you can enter the location in the Help Files field. If 
  57.       you set this to a different location than the Executable Files directory, 
  58.       the location must appear in your Help= line in config.sys. 
  59.  
  60.      Data Files - Under certain circumstances you may want to keep your 
  61.       FontFolder data files separate from the executables. You would do this, 
  62.       for example, if you were sharing a common copy of FontFolder across a 
  63.       network. In this case, you should set the entry in the Data Files field 
  64.       to a location on your local hard disk so that you can have your own 
  65.       private copy of data files. 
  66.  
  67.  Once all entries have been set appropriately, click on the Continue button to 
  68.  begin the FontFolder installation. 
  69.  
  70.  If you do not want to install FontFolder, click on the Exit button to leave 
  71.  the installation program. You can also click on the Exit button at any time 
  72.  during the installation, and it will interrupt the installation at the first 
  73.  appropriate point. However, this will leave the installation in an 
  74.  inconsistent state, and you will have to redo the installation to be able to 
  75.  use FontFolder. 
  76.  
  77.  Installation Steps 
  78.  
  79.  Installation involves the following steps: 
  80.  
  81.      Unpacking and copying files 
  82.  
  83.       The first stage of installation is to place the FontFolder program files 
  84.       in their appropriate target directories. Some files are compressed and 
  85.       must be upacked while others are simply copied. The list of files 
  86.       involved, their destinations, and the instructions to unpack, copy or 
  87.       check (see Customizable files below) the files is contained in the 
  88.       FINSTALL.PKG file in the source directory. This is an ASCII file that can 
  89.       be read with any editor, but it is important that no changes be made in 
  90.       the file. 
  91.  
  92.       Backups - As the install process begins transferring files to the target 
  93.       directories, it checks for existing copies of the files. The first time 
  94.       it finds it is about to overwrite an existing copy, it displays a Backup 
  95.       message informing you that it has found an existing copy and asking if 
  96.       you want a backup made of such files. If you answer yes, a 
  97.  
  98.       \BACKUP 
  99.  
  100.       subdirectory is created in the target directory for Data files, and a 
  101.       copy of the file is placed there. On all subsequent cases where an 
  102.       existing file is encountered, with the exception of the customizable 
  103.       files described below, the files are automatically treated the same way 
  104.       as you decided for this first file. 
  105.  
  106.       Customizable Files - The files 
  107.  
  108.         -  CATALOG.TXT 
  109.         -  CHARBOX.TXT 
  110.         -  LINE.TXT 
  111.         -  PGRAPH.TXT 
  112.  
  113.       used in printing can be customized by the user. When an existing copy of 
  114.       such a file is encountered the install program opens it and does a 
  115.       complete compare of the contents of the existing file and the default. If 
  116.       it finds that the file has been modified, it displays a Customizable 
  117.       Files message alerting you to the fact that it is about to replace a 
  118.       customized version of the file and asking if you want to continue to use 
  119.       the customized version. If you answer yes, it does not copy the new 
  120.       default version, but leaves your customized version in place. It does not 
  121.       make a backup copy of the file in this case. 
  122.  
  123.      Creating a desktop object 
  124.  
  125.       The next step offers the option of creating a program reference object on 
  126.       the Desktop. If you answer yes, an object (icon) will be placed on the 
  127.       Desktop with the name FontFolder. Any previous program reference object 
  128.       for an earlier version of FontFolder created by the user will not be 
  129.       altered; a new object will be created in addition to such an object. 
  130.       However, any previous program reference object created by the FontFolder 
  131.       Install program will be updated by this step, even if it has been 
  132.       subsequently moved inside a desktop folder. The program path will be 
  133.       changed to the current target executable directory, but the icon name 
  134.       will not be modified. 
  135.  
  136.      Creating or updating FONTFOLD.INI 
  137.  
  138.       The final step in installing FontFolder is the creation or updating of 
  139.       FontFolder's ini file. When this step is reached, you will be asked for 
  140.       the directory where you want to place FONTFOLD.INI. 
  141.  
  142.       FontFolder uses an OS/2-style ini file called FONTFOLD.INI to store 
  143.       information necessary for its operation. Examples of the type of 
  144.       information contained in this file are your registration id, the size and 
  145.       location of the various FontFolder windows, lists of the libraries and 
  146.       fontpacks created for use with FontFolder, what fontpacks are currently 
  147.       installed in OS/2, the drive letters for removable drives, network drives 
  148.       and CDROM drives, and the location of the FontFolder data files. The 
  149.       location of FONTFOLD.INI is stored in OS2.INI. 
  150.  
  151.       The default is to create this file in the same directory as FONTFOLD.EXE. 
  152.       However you may want to locate the file in a different directory. The 
  153.       following are examples of cases where you would want to have a separate, 
  154.       unique location for FONTFOLD.INI: 
  155.  
  156.         -  Sharing FontFolder on a network - If FontFolder resides on a network 
  157.            server and is shared by several users, each user needs an individual 
  158.            copy of FONTFOLD.INI.  In this case you should change the location 
  159.            of the FONTFOLD.INI file to a location on your local workstation. 
  160.  
  161.         -  Using FontFolder with multiple versions of OS/2 - You must have 
  162.            separate FONTFOLD.INI files kept in independent locations if you 
  163.            want to switch between different copies of OS/2 on separate 
  164.            partitions in a multi-boot system since the FONTFOLD.INI file 
  165.            contains information specific to a particular copy of OS/2 (e.g. 
  166.            what FontPacks are currently installed). Since the information on 
  167.            where to find FONTFOLD.INI is recorded in OS2.INI, the specific 
  168.            OS2.INI file that is unique to the copy of OS/2 you are running can 
  169.            contain the location of a unique copy of FONTFOLD.INI to be used 
  170.            when FontFolder is run under this copy of OS/2. You can use the 
  171.            Install program to install FontFolder separately to the same 
  172.            location under each copy of OS/2, and change the location for 
  173.            FONTFOLD.INI each time in order to set up the unique copies of 
  174.            FONTFOLD.INI, but there is an easier way to achieve this rather than 
  175.            repeated installations. Simply start FontFolder itself when you are 
  176.            booted in a particular copy of OS/2 and use the FontFolder Settings 
  177.            Notebook to change the path to FONTFOLD.INI to a location that will 
  178.            be unique to that particular version of OS/2. 
  179.  
  180.       If you are installing FontFolder over a previous copy and there is 
  181.       already a copy of FONTFOLD.INI, the Install program will use this copy of 
  182.       FONTFOLD.INI and update it as required. All your existing customizations 
  183.       will be preserved. If you have an earlier version of FontFolder that is 
  184.       in a different directory, but which has placed an entry for FontFolder in 
  185.       OS2.INI, you will be offered the option of using the information from the 
  186.       FONTFOLD.INI file for this version in creating the new FONTFOLD.INI 
  187.  
  188.       NOTE:  This feature will only apply to versions of FontFolder later than 
  189.              3.0 since 3.0 is the first version of FontFolder to store its 
  190.              information in OS2.INI this way. 
  191.  
  192.       FontFolder Registration ID - If this is a new installation or if the 
  193.       Install program can't find a usable copy of FONTFOLD.INI, you will be 
  194.       given an opportunity to enter your registration id. If you do not have a 
  195.       registration id, or if you do not have your id readily available at this 
  196.       time, FontFolder will still be installed, but it will operate as an 
  197.       evaluation copy. You can enter your registration id directly into 
  198.       FontFolder at a later time via the Product Information panel in 
  199.       FontFolder, which you can access from the Help menu while FontFolder is 
  200.       running. For information on obtaining a registration id for FontFolder, 
  201.       click on Regstration Information on the FontFolder Help menu when 
  202.       FontFolder is running. 
  203.  
  204.       If the FONTFOLD.INI file becomes lost or corrupted, you will not be able 
  205.       to start FontFolder. In this case it is neccessary to recreate the ini 
  206.       file in order to use FontFolder. This is done with the Install program 
  207.       using the Recreate Ini 
  208.  
  209.  Exiting the Install program. 
  210.  
  211.  A message will appear when the installation is complete instructing you to 
  212.  click on the Exit button to close the program. 
  213.  
  214.  
  215. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.1. Backup Copies ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  216.  
  217. The FontFolder install program displays the Backup Copies message the first 
  218. time it detects that it is about to overwrite an existing copy of a file during 
  219. installation. You are given the option of having a 
  220.  
  221. \BACKUP 
  222.  
  223. subdirectory created in the target directory for your Data files, and having 
  224. existing files that will be overwritten copied to this backup directory first. 
  225. If you answer Yes, the install program will copy this file and all subsequent 
  226. existing files to the backup directory every time it is about to overwrite 
  227. them, unless the file is a Customizable File. 
  228.  
  229. NOTE:  The only files copied are those that are about to be overwritten. This 
  230.        is not a full backup of your previous version since it does not include 
  231.        your library and fontpack files nor your FONTFOLD.INI file. If you want 
  232.        a complete working backup of the previous version, you should make a 
  233.        separate copy before installing the new version of FontFolder. 
  234.  
  235.  WARNING:  If you reinstall the same version of FontFolder into the same 
  236.            directory, the installation program will detect the previously 
  237.            installed files and offer to back them up. This will overwrite any 
  238.            earlier backup that you made. If you have backed up a previous 
  239.            version of FontFolder on the original install, DO NOT ACCEPT the 
  240.            offer to make a backup since this would overwrite your earlier 
  241.            FontFolder files with the current versions that now reside in your 
  242.            FontFolder directory. 
  243.  
  244.  
  245. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Uninstalling FontFolder ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  246.  
  247. You can use the Install Program to uninstall FontFolder, but you must use a 
  248. copy of the Install program on a diskette or in a separate directory from 
  249. FontFolder to completely remove all traces of FontFolder. If you use the copy 
  250. of the Install program in the FontFolder directory to uninstall FontFolder, it 
  251. will not be able to remove its own files as part of the uninstall. However, all 
  252. other aspects of uninstalling FontFolder will be carried out. If you uninstall 
  253. FontFolder using this copy of the Install program, you will need to manually 
  254. delete the FontFolder directory and the remaining files after the uninstall 
  255. completes. 
  256.  
  257. To uninstall FontFolder, click on the Uninstall entry on the menu bar of 
  258. Install program. You will be shown a list of all versions of FontFolder 
  259. currently installed in OS/2 (this only applies to version 3.0 and later since 
  260. earlier versions did not record their presence in OS2.INI). Pick the version 
  261. you wish to uninstall and click on the Continue button to begin. 
  262.  
  263. Files to Delete 
  264.  
  265. You will be shown a list of options of files to delete. Some of these options 
  266. may not be accessible, depending on how FontFolder was installed. For instance 
  267. if the default installation of putting all the FontFolder files in the 
  268. Executable files directory was chosen, the only option available will be to 
  269. delete the files in the Executable files directory. However, if you originally 
  270. placed the Help file or the Data files in separate directories, you will be 
  271. given the option of deleting these files from their separate locations. To 
  272. completely uninstall FontFolder, you should check all the directory locations 
  273. available to you since you placed FontFolder's files in these locations during 
  274. installation. Unless you check the Delete entire directory option (see below), 
  275. FontFolder will not delete files which it did not install originally or create 
  276. as part of its normal operation. 
  277.  
  278. For each directory location there is also a Delete entire directory option that 
  279. you can check. If you check this option, FontFolder will delete the entire 
  280. directory along with all its files rather than checking each file to see if it 
  281. is a FontFolder file. While this operation is quicker and can be used in the 
  282. case where you may have put something else in the FontFolder directory which 
  283. should also be deleted, it is an inherently dangerous operation since it 
  284. doesn't check what it is deleting. In particular, if you should check this 
  285. option for something like the Help directory in the case where you have put the 
  286. FontFolder Help file in a shared Help directory, you will lose all the Help 
  287. files for other applications that share this directory. It is recommended that 
  288. you not use this operation unless you have a specific need for it. 
  289.  
  290. In addition to a complete removal of FontFolder, you can use this uninstall 
  291. operation to do more specific things such as remove the executable (and help) 
  292. files for a specific version of FontFolder while leaving the data files 
  293. (libraries and fontpacks) in place. You might do this for example if you have 
  294. multiple versions of FontFolder installed and are sharing the data files among 
  295. them. 
  296.  
  297. When you have checked all the locations where FontFolder files should be 
  298. deleted, click on the Continue button to begin uninstalling FontFolder. 
  299.  
  300. Installed Fonts in the Font Cache 
  301.  
  302. The first thing the uninstall operation does is to check to see if you have any 
  303. fonts installed from a CDROM or a network drive that are using the FontFolder 
  304. Font Cache. When installing fonts from either of these locations, FontFolder 
  305. temporarily moves font files to a Font Cache subdirectory whose default 
  306. location is the data file directory. If the uninstall program were to delete 
  307. this subdirectory as part of uninstalling FontFolder, you would lose access to 
  308. these installed fonts. If FontFolder detects that this situation exists, it 
  309. gives you the option of either exiting the uninstall operation so you can 
  310. decide what to do about these fonts, or else you may continue the operation, in 
  311. which case FontFolder will not delete these font files or the directory path 
  312. leading to this Font Cache directory. 
  313.  
  314. Note:  If you have set the Font Cache directory to a totally independent 
  315.        location (done in FontFolder via the Settings Notebook), the uninstall 
  316.        program will not attempt to delete it nor will it show any message 
  317.        concerning these fonts (since they are not going to be affected by the 
  318.        uninstall). 
  319.  
  320.  List of Actions 
  321.  
  322.  The Uninstall operation displays a running list of the operations it is about 
  323.  to perform. At the completion of the operation, this list is available for 
  324.  review, and it can be cut and pasted to a file if you want to preserve it. 
  325.  Note that while it tells you the operations it attempted, it does not at this 
  326.  time record whether or not it was successful. 
  327.  
  328.  Note:  If you installed FontFolder's Help file to a separate Help directory 
  329.         that is shared with Help files from other programs, do not be alarmed 
  330.         at the entry indicating that the uninstall operation is attempting to 
  331.         delete this directory. The uninstall operation always looks to delete 
  332.         this directory after deleting the FontFolder Help file in case this is 
  333.         a directory that is unique to FontFolder, but it will not delete the 
  334.         directory if it detects the presence of other files in the directory. 
  335.  
  336.  Uninstall Completion 
  337.  
  338.  The uninstall program will inform you when it has completed. You can review 
  339.  the list of actions and cut and paste it to a file if you wish. Click the Exit 
  340.  button when you are ready to close the Install program.

  343. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Recreating FontFolder's Ini File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  344.  
  345. FontFolder uses an OS/2-style ini file called FONTFOLD.INI to store information 
  346. necessary for its operation. Examples of the type of information contained in 
  347. this file are your registration id, the size and location of the various 
  348. FontFolder windows, lists of the libraries and fontpacks created for use with 
  349. FontFolder, what fontpacks are currently installed in OS/2, the drive letters 
  350. for removable drives, network drives and CDROM drives, and the location of the 
  351. FontFolder data files. The location of FONTFOLD.INI is stored in OS2.INI. 
  352.  
  353. If the FONTFOLD.INI file becomes lost or corrupted, you will not be able to 
  354. start FontFolder. In this case you can use the Recreate Ini entry on the 
  355. Install program menu bar to create a new ini file. 
  356.  
  357. You will be first asked to specify the location for the files for the current 
  358. version of FontFolder. The options are the same as for an initial installation 
  359. of FontFolder, and if you placed the Help file and the Data files in separate 
  360. directories, you should enter those directories here. If you do not remember 
  361. where you placed these files, it will not be possible to recreate a working 
  362. version of FontFolder. In this case you will need to completely reinstall 
  363. FontFolder. Once you have specified where these files are located, click on the 
  364. Continue button to begin the recreation of the FONTFOLD.INI file. 
  365.  
  366. You will next be asked to specify where to put the FONTFOLD.INI file. The 
  367. default location is to place it in the same directory as the FontFolder 
  368. Executable files, but there are occasions where you may want to place it in a 
  369. different location. See the discussion of the FONTFOLD.INI file in Installing 
  370. FontFolder for the details of when you might want to put FONTFOLD.INI 
  371. elsewhere. 
  372.  
  373. Since your registration id is stored in FONTFOLD.INI (and has been lost if 
  374. FONTFOLD.INI was lost or corrupted), you will be asked to enter you 
  375. registration id. If you do not have a registration id, or if you do not have 
  376. your id readily available at this time, FONTFOLD.INI will still be created and 
  377. FontFolder will still be usable, but it will operate as an evaluation copy. To 
  378. restore full operation, you can enter your registration id directly into 
  379. FontFolder at a later time via the Product Information panel in FontFolder, 
  380. which you can access from the Help menu while FontFolder is running. For 
  381. information on obtaining a registration id for FontFolder, click on Regstration 
  382. Information on the FontFolder Help menu when FontFolder is running. 
  383.  
  384. You will be informed when the recreation of FONTFOLD.INI is complete. Click on 
  385. the Exit button to close the Install program. 
  386.  
  387.  
  388. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Recreating FontFolder's Desktop Object (Icon) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  389.  
  390. If you lose the Desktop icon for FontFolder, you can use the Recreate Program 
  391. Icon item on the menu to generate a new icon. In order for this to work, you 
  392. must use the copy of the Install program that has been placed in your 
  393. FontFolder directory. Using a copy of the Install program on a diskette or in 
  394. another directory will not work because it will not be able to determine where 
  395. to find the FontFolder executable file.
