Floppy-Copy. Apart from that, the unregistered version is fully functional and
by no means restricted in any way.
Main Screen
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Main Screen ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Explanation of features/buttons in the Main Dialog:
Last Message
This field contains valuable status information and keeps you up-to-date
on what's happening.
Source / Target
Select the source diskette-drive (image) to copy. "Target" is the drive
(image) where the copied data is to be written.
Diskette in Memory
If a diskette or an image has been read and stored in memory, label and
type will be shown. Status information, e.g. current track and head, is
also displayed during copying.
Read / Write
Click on these buttons to start reading or writing.
Stop
Select stop to immediately interrupt a read or write process.
Q-Format
Click this button to (Quick-Format) a diskette. Quick-Format will erase
all data on the diskette specified under "target".
Note:
Quick-Format only works with diskettes that have been previously
formatted. If Quick-Format encounters a non-formatted diskette, it will
automatically spawn PMFORMAT to do the job (Please note that PMFORMAT
comes with OS/2, not Floppy-Copy).
The System Menu
Click on the diskette-icon in the top lefthand corner of the main window
to invoke the system menu. The system menu lets you control the program
even if it is minimized to the desktop. You can also open the options and
product information dialogs.
You can quit Floppy-Copy via the System Menu or with the keystrokes: ALT-F4
and F3.
The "Options" Notebook
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Save will permanently store the new settings. Temporary will keep the new
settings active only until Floppy-Copy is quit.
The Options notebook consists of the following pages:
Please double-click on the page "tabs" for more information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Copymode ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Copy entire diskette
The entire diskette will be read into memory and all tracks will be
written, whether used or not used.
Copy only used areas
Only used tracks will be read/written from/to diskette. If the diskette
is only partially used, this option will lead to a significant speed
increase when reading and writing diskettes. This is the default
selection.
Userdefined Type
This options allows you to select values for tracks/heads/sectors that
are different from those values commonly used on the PC architecture.
Entering special settings enables you to copy, for example, MAC or Power
MAC diskettes. In general, you could copy every diskette format that is
supported by your floppy-controller. Please note that you will not be
able to copy Warp XDF diskettes, since the XDF implementation under Warp
is strictly read-only.
Ignore read errors
When this setting is activated, the read-process will not be interrupted
when an error occurs while reading a diskette. Thus you can also read
diskettes that are partially corrupted.
Start Write after Read
If this option is activated, Floppy-Copy will write to the target
immediately after the read-process is finished, without asking you to
insert the target. An exception is, of course, copying from A: -> A:, and
from B: -> B:.
Generate new serial number This features generates a new serial number
for each target diskette. To create 100% identical copies of a diskette,
deselect this button.
The notebook page "Format"
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.2. Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Format never
Unformatted diskettes will not be formatted by Floppy-Copy and thus not
be written.
Format if necessary
If unformatted media is detected, Floppy-Copy will format the diskette
during the process of writing. Although this does take some time, it is
very fast compared with regular formatting of diskettes via OS/2's
format. This is the default selection.
Format always
All target diskettes will be formatted while writing. Enabling this
option is normally not necessary.
The notebook page "Verify"
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.3. Verify ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
No verify
There is no check whatsoever to determine whether the target diskette has
been written correctly.
Standard Mode
The target diskette will be verified while it is written. Although this
is a bit slower than the previous option, it is recommended to always
enable this feature. This selection is default.
Extended Mode
After the writing process is finished, all tracks that have been written
will be read again and compared with the diskette in memory. This might
be a bit safer than standard verify, but it also is slower.
The notebook page "Image"
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.4. Image ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
DiskImage
Images will be in DiskImage format. This is a widely used format which
can also be read by several other disk-imaging programs. This is the
default selection.
VMDISK
The image created by Floppy-Copy will be compatible to the VMDISK format.
OS/2 uses this format to create bootable DOS-VDM images.
Flcopy Image
Diskette images will be written using a proprietary algorithm. This is
the default selection.
- DES-encrypted
Enables image-encryption using the DES-Algorithm (Data Encryption
Standard). This option invokes some serious calculations and will
take a long time to finish (en- and decryption of a 3.5" HD-diskette
will each take at least 10 minutes on a 486 system). In return, your
data will be pretty well protected.
Warning!
You have to enter an alphanumeric key to use DES. If you should
happen to forget the key, you will not be able to decrypt the image
file!
- Create comments
This option enables you to embed a comment in the imagefile, for
later reference. If "Show comments" is enabled, the comment will be
displayed when the image is read.
- Compress Image
You can choose to write compressed or uncompressed Floppy-Copy
images. Compression usually leads to a significant decrease in the
size of the image, thus reducing space requirements on your
hard-disk.
Ignore CRC-failure
Possible checksum errors will be ignored when reading a damaged
image-file.
Show comments
Embedded comments will be shown when an image is read.
The notebook page "Warnings"
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.5. Warnings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Warn if target diskette contains data
When attempting to write onto a diskette that is not empty, this will
generate a message asking for a confirmation.
Warn if diskette was not changed
Floppy-Copy will try to detect whether the diskette in RAM is identical
with the diskette in the drive. If so, you will be asked to confirm that
it will be written to.
Warn if diskette type is incompatible
Floppy-Copy provides support for copying diskettes onto diskettes of
greater capacity. If this warning is enabled, you will be asked to
confirm your selection and Floppy-Copy will try to perform the requested
action.
Critical error alert
Displays an additional popup-window if an unrecoverable error occurs.
The notebook page "Misc."
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.6. Misc. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Put Window in foreground after read and write
This setting makes the main window of Floppy-Copy "reappear" after a
completing an operation.
