  98.       INTRODUCTION
  99.  
  100.       PM File & Disk Utility (PMFDU) was designed and written to 
  101.       provide a useful set of utilities for manipulating disk files
  102.       and directories on computer systems using IBM OS/2.  PMFDU 
  103.       requires version 1.2 or greater of the IBM OS/2 or its 
  104.       equivalent.  PMFDU is a Presentation Manager (PM) program which 
  105.       provides a consistant user interface for interacting with the 
  106.       program.

  108.       PMFDU is distributed as a "shareware" program.  This means that
  109.       you are encouraged to try the program before you register your 
  110.       copy.  You are also encouraged to provide unregistered copies of
  111.       the programs to your friends and colleagues.  If you find the 
  112.       program useful and decided to keep a copy, you must pay a
  113.       registration fee.

  115.       REGISTRATION INFORMATION

  117.       PMFDU is a copyrighted program of ASH Software, Inc. and is
  118.       protected by copyright law.  If you obtained a copy of PMFDU
  119.       from a friend, a shareware disk vendor, a bulletin board, or an
  120.       on-line computer service, you have an unregistered copy.  You
  121.       are authorized, and encouraged, to use this program for a period
  122.       not to exceed 14 days.  If you wish to continue using PMFDU 
  123.       after this time has expired, you must register and pay for your
  124.       copy of the program.  The registration fee is $35 for a single
  125.       copy of PMFDU.  This fee entitles you to:

  127.            A disk with a registered copy of the latest version of
  128.            PMFDU;

  130.            A copy of CLFDU, which is a command line version of the
  131.            program.

  133.            a disk with an unregistered copy of PMFDU for distribution
  134.            to friends and colleagues;

  160.       UNREGISTERED COPIES:  Unregistered copies of PMFDU are 
  161.       distributed to allow you to try the program before you actually
  162.       pay for it.  These copies are not "free" or "public domain" 
  163.       copies and remain the copyrighted property of ASH Software, Inc.
  164.       You are granted the right to use the program at no charge for a
  165.       trial period not to exceed 14 days.  If you wish to continue
  166.       using the program after this period, you must register and pay
  167.       for your copy of the program.  If you do not wish to register
  168.       your copy, you must cease using the program.  You may, however,
  169.       keep copies of the program to share with others.

  180.       of computers covered under a site, corporate, or network 
  181.       license.  You may install PMFDU on a computer connected to a
  182.       network provided there is no possibility that more than the
  183.       licensed number of users can use the program at any one time.

  185.       BACKUP COPIES:  You may make as many copies of the registered 
  186.       copy of PMFDU as you need for normal backup purposes.  You may 
  187.       make an unlimited number of copies of the unregistered PMFDU 
  188.       and give them to others provided you include all of the files
  189.       distributed with the unregistered copy.  You may not give copies
  190.       of the registered version to any other person for any reason.

  192.       DISTRIBUTION:  PMFDU can be distributed via individual copies of
  193.       the unregistered version to friends and colleagues, via bulletin
  194.       boards, via online computer services or via a shareware disk
  195.       vendor provided no charge is made beyond a nominal copying and
  196.       handling charge.  PMFDU, or any part therof, may not be included
  197.       with any other product nor can it be offered as an incentive to
  198.       purchase any other product without the express written consent
  199.       of ASH Software, Inc.

  201.       USE:  PMFDU is an extremely powerful program.  Every attempt has
  202.       been made to protect your computer software and data from damage 
  203.       by PMFDU, however improper use of the program may result in the 
  204.       loss of computer software and data.  The user assumes full
  205.       responsibility for chosing to use PMFDU to accomplish your
  206.       intended goals.  ASH Software, Inc. limits its warranty to
  207.       replacement of a defective disk or manual.

  223.       LIMITED WARRANTY:  ASH Software, Inc. warrants, for a period of
  224.       90 days, to registered owners of PMFDU that the program will
  225.       operate in accordance with the documentation provided and that
  226.       the diskette and manual will be free from physical defects which
  227.       cause them to be unusable in normal use.  ASH Software, Inc.
  228.       will, at its sole discretion, repair or replace any defective
  229.       items or refund the purchase price of PMFDU, provided such
  230.       defect is the fault of ASH Software, Inc. and not the result of
  231.       misuse or abuse.   The above refund, repair, or replacement is
  232.       the sole remedy for any defects, documentation errors, or
  233.       program errors.  Under no circumstances will ASH Software, Inc.
  234.       be responsible for any other costs or damages whatsoever 
  235.       resulting from your use of PMFDU or your failure to read,
  236.       understand, or follow the instructions provided in the 
  237.       documentation.  ASH Software, Inc. MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES,
  238.       EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE
  239.       WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
  240.       PURPOSE.  ASH Software's warranty is expressly limited to the
  241.       cost of replacement of any defective disk, manual, or program
  242.       provided with PMFDU.

  287.       PMFDU is as easy to install as it is to use.  There are only two
  288.       files to copy, the on-line help file and the executable file.  
  289.       If you have OS/2 v1.2 or greater you should use the PMFDU13.HLP
  290.       and the PMFDU13.EXE files.  If you have OS/2 v2.0 or greater,
  291.       you should use the PMFDU20.HLP and the PMFDU20.EXE.  All that is 
  292.       required is to copy both files to the same directory on your hard 
  293.       disk.  It may be desirable to place these files in one of the 
  294.       directories pointed to by your "PATH" statement, but it is not
  295.       necessary.  Once you have copied and renamed the files, installation 
  296.       is complete and the program is ready to use.

  299.       OVERVIEW
  300.  
  301.       Once you have the program installed, you can execute the program 
  302.       in one of several methods.  You can run the program directly by
  303.       typing the name or you can use the "START" command to start a
  304.       copy of PMFDUxx running.  You can also include a "START" command
  305.       in your "STARTUP.CMD" file so that a copy of the program is run
  306.       each time you boot your system.  Regardless of the method you
  307.       use to execute the program, it will initially appear as a
  308.       program icon.

  310.       PMFDU makes extensive use of "on-line" help.  Context sensitive 
  311.       help is contantly available by pressing the "F1" key or by
  312.       pressing one of the various help buttons.  Help can also be
  313.       obtained by selecting the help menu.  This is the prefered
  314.       method of obtaining assistance as the "shareware" version of the
  315.       program does not include a manual.

  317.       PMFDU provides a number of useful functions for manipulating 
  318.       files and directories on your disk(s) and diskettes.  The
  319.       "File" menu contains functions for manipulating and searching 
  320.       files.  The functions provided are:

  322.            "Text Search" provides the capability to search a group of
  323.            files for the occurance of a given string of text.  If the
  324.            file contains the text, the file will be included in the
  325.            list box.

  327.            "File Search" provides the capability to locate a file, or
  328.            group of files on your hard disk(s) or diskette.  Files
  329.            which match the scope and file specification will be 
  330.            included in the list box.

  332.            "Delete Files" provides the capability to delete a file, or
  333.            group of files on your hard disk(s) or diskette.  Files
  334.            which match the scope and file specification will be 
  335.            included in the list box to be deleted if requested.  You
  336.            should exercise great caution when using this function!

  349.            "Attributes" provides the capability to alter the
  350.            attributes of a file, or group of files.  Files which
  351.            match the scope and file specification will be included in
  352.            the list box to be altered according to your selection.
  353.  
  354.       The "Disk" menu provides functions for manipulating entire
  355.       directories.  The functions provided are:
  356.  
  357.            "Statistics" provides information with respect to the
  358.            entire disk or diskette as well as information about a
  359.            particular directory.  The directory information will
  360.            contain information for both the directory and all
  361.            directories encapsulated by the base directory.

  364.            "Delete Tree" provides the capability to prune, or
  365.            remove, an entire directory.  All files in all
  366.            encapsulated directories are removed as well as the
  367.            directory itself.  You should exercise great care when
  368.            using this function!

  370.       As you will see, PMFDU is a powerful program and great care
  371.       should be exercised when using this program.  With a few
  372.       commands, it is possible to erase the entire contents of a hard
  373.       disk!  The user is cautioned to pay close attention to what the
  374.       program is requesting.  If in doubt, press "F1" to obtain help
  375.       or "Exit" the function until you can ascertain what the function
  376.       is going to do.  PMFDU always works from the contents of the
  377.       list box.  It is imperative that you examine the entire contents
  378.       of the list box BEFORE you instruct PMFDU to complete the
  379.       requested function.  The list box will contain the files or
  380.       directories which are going to be operated upon by the 
  381.       subsequent operation.

  384.       SUMMARY
  385.  
  386.       Used properly, PMFDU adds capabilities and functionality which
  387.       are needed for pruning directories, removing unwanted groups of
  388.       files, searching for the location of files, and searching for
  389.       text strings within groups of files.  ASH Software, Inc. would
  390.       welcome your comments on PMFDU as we continually strive to
  391.       improve the product and its functionality.  We can be reached by
  392.       any of the methods shown above.

  394.       For those who prefer using the OS/2 command line, we have
  395.       developed a version of this program called Command Line Fixed
  396.       Disk Utility (CLFDU).  While this program does not have all the
  397.       capabilities of PMFDU, it provides very similar tools for those
  398.       who work from the command line.  CLFDU is automatically sent to
  399.       all registered users of PMFDU.
