Chump 1.0
=========
You have received the first version of cyrillisation package for OS/2.
|| Why do you need Chump when there are Cyrillic add-on available from
|| IBM to enable code page switching in Warp?
The main disadvantage of IBM's cyrillisation is the fact that
code page 866 must be in the first place in codepage statement in
config.sys in order to enable the use of PM fonts by PM applications.
Thus it is no longer possible to use German or any other European
language keyboard with extended ASCII keys to enter special characters
directly in PM apps.
Lotus AmiPro/2 won't even start with the code page 866 as a primary page.
Describe/2 won't allow you to enter Cyrillic characters.
Another inconvenience is inability to edit keyboard layouts or customize
the switching hotkey to user's preference. User is forced to learn
standard Russian typewriter layout.
The choice of the Type 1 fonts is limited to only one font encoding and
your existing language specific Type 1 Windows fonts are of no use.
Not to mention the ability to read/write Russian in KOI-8 encoding widely
used in the Russian part of Internet.
|| What Chump can do for you?
Chump is a utility to switch keyboard layouts between Latin and Cyrillic
in OS/2 PM, Full Screen and DOS Windowed sessions. It allows up to 10
different layouts switched with any customizable combination of
Alt-Cntrl-Shift keys. Switching is indicated by changing color of the
active window bar and optionally by sound. It is also possible to
temporary disable the program.
It works by switching keyboard layouts between Latin and Cyrillic in PM,
OS/2 fullscreen and windowed sessions and DOS windowed sessions.
Presentation Manager is required for Chump to work.
Swithing is made by pressing "hot keys" which is any combination of
Shift-Ctrl-Alt keys. User can monitor current keyboard mode by the color
of the active window bar.
The window bar color and the desired keyboard layout are fully customizable.
Chump supports up to ten different keyboard layouts. Chump can also be
temporary disabled.
This archive includes:
----------------------
chumpmon.exe - keyboard monitor
ched.exe - (ChEd) editor for keyboard layouts, hot keys and window bar
color.
chumpd.dll - message hook - for changing window bar color.
chump.exe - (Chump) control panel.
Readme.Eng - This file.
Readme.Rus - The same in Russian code page 866.
Readme.Koi - The same in KOI-8 encoding.
Register.Doc - registration information.
Installation:
-------------
1. Copy file chumpd.dll to any directory in the LIBPATH statement of your
config.sys file (\OS2\DLL for example)
2. Create a directory on your hard drive and place all other files from
this archive to this directory. Files ched.exe and chum.exe must be
in the same directory.
3. Add the following line to your config.sys file:
RUN=drive:\path\chumpmon.exe
4. Create the desktop objects for Chump.exe and ChEd.exe Place Chump object
into the StartUp folder.
5. Launch ChEd. Edit keyboard layouts, window bar color and adjust swithcing
keys according to your preferences. While editing Russian keyboard layouts
it is recommended to use the same PM Type 1 font that you will be using in
your PM applications to enter Cyrillic.
Tip: After you drag the Type 1 font from the Font Palette and drop it into
the ChEd window press the Shift key (This is corrected in the version 1.10)
6. Reboot your machine.
Some more tips:
----------------
- In order to see Cyrillic in OS/2 and DOS windowsed sessions you have to
obtain PM bitmap fonts for the code page 850 containing Cyrillic
characters. These fonts are available at ftp.kiae.su in /pub/os2/cyr as
fon_warp.lzh (Courtesy of Dima Osipov).
- You kan add keyboard layouts to suit any encoding of the available to you
Type 1 fonts. It is much better then the hussle of converting all your
beautiful Windows fonts into the code page, supported by OS/2.
- In Describe/2 word processor press NumLock key if you seem not to be able
to type cyrillic.
- Test Chump, enjoy it and soon register to get the new wastly improved
version 1.10 of Chump!
