│ OS/2 "BATCH MANAGER" │
│ │
│ AN SAA/CUA STANDARD PRODUCT TO EXECUTE AND CONTROL │
│ BATCH JOBS UNDER IBM'S OS/2 OPERATING SYSTEM │
│ │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The OS/2 "BATCH MANAGER" provides a vehicle to:
* Submit and execute jobs (OS/2 or DOS Command Files), either
immediately, at a delayed time/date, or to execute recurringly
(i.e, every Tuesday, end of week, last day of month, etc.).
* Control the action of the queue which is responsible for
controlling the jobs.
* Control the action of the batch job, such as cancel, hold, release,
etc.
"BATCH MANAGER" is ideal for any batch process; i.e., backing-up
files, downloading data from a mainframe, updating files, payroll, or
producing routine reports. The product is executed at each
workstation and the jobs are controlled by the individual user. It
is initiated when the user activates the workstation.
MAIN PANEL
The Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the facility is a
window programmed around OS/2 "Presentation Manager." The main window
displays the batch queue, along with the jobs submitted to the queue.
Each job is listed by Job ID, Job Name (as submitted by the user),
scheduled Start Date, scheduled/actual Start Time, Job Status (Active,
Pending, Holding). A code is also displayed indicating whether the
batch job is Single or Recurring (repetitive).
The window consists of the following action bar choices:
QUEUE Provides the means to control the actions of the queue.
Commands include:
* HOLD QUEUE to stop the queue.
* RELEASE QUEUE to continue processing.
* HOLD ALL the JOBS in the queue which are not active.
* RELEASE ALL the JOBS in the queue which are being held.
* CANCEL ALL the JOBS in the queue (purge).
JOB Provides the means to control the actions of the job(s), including
submitting and updating jobs, cancelling, requeuing, delaying, etc.
Commands include:
* DETAILS of the job can be displayed.
* Jobs can be CANCELed (including active jobs).
* The user can HOLD a job which is not active.
* Jobs can be RELEASEd for execution.
* Jobs can be SUBMITted for execution either at a specific date and
time, or to run at a recurring date/time (i.e., every day at
12:00, every Monday at 06:00, end of the month, etc.).
* Job execution details can be UPDATEd.
OPTION provides the means to display the log of all jobs that have
been executed since the last restart of "BATCH MANAGER."
HELP provides guidance in executing the facility. Pertinent pop-up
windows are invoked as required to guide the user through the selected
action. The user can request HELP instructions through standard OS/2
functions. As such, product documentation can be printed as
required.
The main panel displays all of the jobs currently in the queue.
It is refreshed whenever activity occurs within it. The screen,
therefore,is always current.
SUBMITTING A JOB
To begin a job, the user must submit user specified command files
(.CMD, .BAT or .EXE) either from the GUI window or from a command line
interface, making it ideal for network related applications. When a job
is submitted, it is stacked into the queue for execution. The default is
to execute one batch job at a time. To execute multiple jobs at the same
time make the command file one which 'STARTS' other command files.
JOB COMPLETION
Upon completion of the batch job, a screen message will be
displayed notifying the user of job termination (either ERROR or NO
ERRORS). Some OS/2 Termination and Return Codes may also be
displayed. Messages are logged in a file for reference.
COMMAND LINE INTERFACE
"BATCH MANAGER" offers a comprehensive command line interface as
well as the GUI window. Full details of the command line interface are
contained in the 'README.TXT' file.

│ "I would recommend Batch Manager for anyone who has the need to │
│ initiate jobs on a delayed basis. Batch Manager provides the type of │
│ capability that has existed for two decades on the mainframe and │
│ mini-computer platforms. As such, it would also be a good tool for │
│ those contemplating the right-sizing of mainframe and minicomputer │
│ applications to the PC/LAN platform." │
