Taligent and OS/2
This month, the OS/2 Bay Area User Group will host one of the first public
viewings of the Taligent Application Environment. We will be introduced to
Taligent by one of its key developers, and will hear about IBM's plans for
incorporating Taligent technology into OS/2 from IBM's Technical Liaison to
Taligent.
Dr. Jack Grimes, Manager of Technology Evaluation at Taligent, will speak on
Taligent and the Future of Operating Systems. His talk will include a videotape
showing Taligent in action.
Dr. Jack Grimes
Taligent's objective is to fundamentally change the way software is created,
maintained, and used. Its architectural approach is to integrate reusable sets
of software into object frameworks, which implement major units of
functionality, and are designed for customizatifon. They factor every aspect
of systems software, including development, operation, and applications, into
over 100 object frameworks. The result is a new technology foundation that
will allow developers to shorten development cycles from years to months while
delivering software that better meets users' needs.
Jack Grimes is currently Manager of Technology Evaluation at Taligent, where he
is responsible for evaluating technology from potential new investors and
initiating strategic technology acquisitions. Before that, he was Manager for
User Environment Development. Jack was previously VP for Engineering at Mass
Systems, and has worked for Intel, ITT, and Tektronix. He holds a PhD in
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Iowa State, and also an MS in
Experimental Psychology from the University of Oregon.
Dr. Richard Hoffman will speak on IBM's specific plans for deploying Taligent
technology in its products over the next few years, with particular attention
to the OS/2 version of the Taligent Application Environment expected in early
1995.
Dr. Richard Hoffman
Richard Hoffman is currently IBM's Technical Liaison to Taligent. Before that,
he was an architect for what is now the DB2/2 product. Richard has also worked
for Exxon, Texas Instruments and Schlumberger. He holds a PhD in Math from the
University of Texas.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Special Interest Groups ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The user group has Special Interest Groups, or SIGs, which provide meetings and
activities for members with common technical interests.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4.1. Developers SIG ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
OS/2 Developers SIG
The Developers SIG focuses on topics of interest to OS/2 programmers, with
educational presentations, product demonstrations, and strategy briefings. It
also provides a forum for OS/2 developers to network and socialize.
A typical meeting includes a speaker, a Programming Tip of the Month, and a
question and answer period.
Recent meetings have covered PM programming and testing, Workplace Shell
programming, object oriented technology and the System Object Model, and the
C/Set++ User Interface Class Library.
The SIG meets the second Monday of each month at the IBM Ultimedia Tools Group
in Mountain View. Meeting time is 7:00 PM, and doors open at 6:30. Meetings are
currently free and are open to the public.
The Developers SIG maintains the OS/2 Consultants Directory, which is available
to the public and is provided to companies inquiring about OS/2 expertise.
To subscribe to an electronic mailing list for SIG news, send a note containing
the line, "SUBSCRIBE DEVSIG" (without quotes) to daveb@netcom.com. Send the
command "SUBSCRIBE CONSDIR" to subscribe to the OS/2 Consultants Directory.

Monday, September 12, 1994, Between 5:30 and 8:00 P.M.
Developers SIG September Meeting
Bring-Your-Own-Dinner Picnic
Our September meeting will be an informal picnic in Central Park in Santa
Clara. Drop by between 5:30 and 8. The meeting is free and open to all OS/2
developers and their spouses, significant others, families, and friends. We
have no formal agenda. Our main purpose is to socialize and network and have a
good time.
Bring your own dinner - fast food, sandwich from home, or something to BBQ at
the park (bring charcoal, etc.). No need to bring something to share. It's
every developer for him/herself.
The park has picnic tables, BBQ grills, a lake, and sports and play areas.
Alcohol is not allowed in the park without a permit, which, unfortunately we
can't get in time.
Directions from 101 and Bowers/Great America Parkway:
Take Bowers south. At El Camino it turns into Kiely. Continue on Kiely past
Benton. The park will be on your left just past a school. Enter the second
parking lot, just before you come to Homestead Rd. We'll meet at the Pavilion,
which is near the parking lot.

Chemical SIG August Meeting
SOM: Realizing the Promise of OO Reusability by Tom Pennello.
On Monday, August 8, the OS/2 Bay Area User Group Chemical SIG will hold its
monthly meeting at 7:00 P.M.
If you've been com object-oriented programing, you've probably been given the
Great Commandment "Go Forth and Re-use". But there are serious impediments in
OO technology to com so. For example, in C++'s object model, changing the
number of Chemistry members of a class or even reordering the functions forces
recompilation of all client source modules. This means if you are re-using a
third-party C++ library and the library is upgraded, you have to recompile all
your client code. Yuk. In fact, because C++ compilers all use CISC object
models, libraries are often shipped in source code form, so you can recompile
them with your compiler. Vendors can't ship a binary version that hides their
trade secrets. So some libraries never see the light of CASE. So much for
Boulevard re-use.
Enter SOM -- IBM's System Object Model -- to solve these problems and more.
SOM is an object model together with a run-time object engine that can be used
to implement C++ and many other OO languages. With SOM, a supplier of a class
can improve the class and at the same time maintain full binary compatibility
with clients of previous versions of that class. This is especially important
when the client is an independent program and the supplier's class
implementation resides in a dynamically loaded library. SOM also provides
programming language independence, dynamic binding, and runtime access to type
information.
We won't be able to achieve the Object Revolution -- true, widespread re-use
and interchangeable components -- until a technology such as SOM becomes
commonplace. We'll talk about competing technologies from Microsoft -- OLE and
COM.
We'll also Coast how C++ programmers can chemical SOM objects with MetaWare's
recently released High C/C++ compiler for OS/2 with CMS capability.
About the Speaker
Tom Pennello is the Vice President and co-founder of MetaWare Incorporated.
Tom worked extensively with IBM in improving SOM to support multiple
inheritance and the features of C++. He graduated magna components laude with
a mathematics degree from the University of Santa Clara, and he obtained his
Master's and Ph.D. from U.C. Santa Cruz in computer science, where his research
was focussed on automated compiler construction. Tom served on the ANSI
Standards Committee for C, and now serves on the ANSI C++ committee, where he
contributes from his experience in language design and formal language methods.
His industry experience includes implementing both C and C++ compiler
front-ends and code generators for RISC and CISC processors.
Photographs
Tom was in Sacramento the day of the meeting, and Dave had agreed to fly out to
pick him up. Enterprise SIG co-chair Steve Burton came along for the ride and
to take these photos.
