Winos2-Set
ver. 1.00
Copyright (c) 1994
by Gary L. Robinson
WHAT IS WINOS2-SET?
Winos2-Set is an OS/2 utility to
help set your WINOS2 environment with
out constantly having to shuffle disks
or jump through hoops. With Winos2-
Set you can switch your WINOS2 to
run at 256 colors or any mode your
card supports easily without going
through Selective Setup or DSPINSTL
constantly. Just set up your Windows
environment the way you want it and
then Register it with Winos2-Set.
Then set it another way you like it and
Register it. Then all you do to switch
back and forth is to Swap with Winos2
-Set. Winos2-Set copy's your WIN.INI
and SYSTEM.INI from the the directory
where they reside and makes a copy of
them under the name you register them
by. Winos2-Set is my first OS/2 PM
program developed with VX-REXX. It
requires the VX-REXX file VROBJ.DLL
to be on your hard disk. Your LIBPATH
statement must have the directory that
VROBJ.DLL resides in on it's lists of
paths. Winos2-Set has been tested on
OS/2 Special Edition for Windows but
has not been tested with the Standard
edition of OS/2. However, I am fairly
confident it will work the same way
regardless of which edition you use.
BUT ------ PLEASE BACK UP YOUR
WIN.INI & SYSTEM.INI FILES BEFORE
YOU USE THIS UTILITY. Nothing, in
this world, is perfect - so backing up
these files is a very prudent thing to
do!
SETTING UP WINOS2-SET
Follow these steps :
1. Make sure VROBJ.DLL is on your
LIB PATH and on your hard drive.
VROBJ.DLL is available on almost
any OS/2 BBS.
2. Copy WINSET.EXE, WINSET.ICO,
WINSET.BMP, and WINSET.DOC to
wherever you want to keep them at.
3. Migrate the program to the desktop
using templates or other migration
tools.
4. Once you have an icon on the Desk
top, bring up the settings menu
and go to the Program Tab. In the
Working Directory field TYPE IN
THE FULL PATH TO WHERE YOU
PUT THE FILES AT. This will in-
sure that the program will find all
of it's files. Close up the settings
menu.
5. Activate the program by clicking on
the icon twice.
6. Select Setup from the menu bar and
select Register WINDOWS Path.
When prompted, type in the com-
plete Path to where your Windows
WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files are.
Press OK to accept/save this
when you are done.
7. Select Setup again and then select
Register Winos2-Set Path. Type
in the full Path to where you want
the program to keep the registered
back up files at. I usually make a
sub directory under the main di-
rectory to keep all the registered
files by themselves but the path
can be set to anywhere. The Path
HAS to exist though. Winos2-Set
will not create a directory for you.
When you are finished press OK to
accept/save your path.
8. SHUT THE PROGRAM DOWN then
start it up again. The program will
make a data file, store the paths
you entered, and then load them in
every time you activate it.
9. Click on the Register button. Type
in a name to register/save your
current Windows .INI files to. If
you type in MAIN and press OK the
program will copy your Windows
.INI files to the directory you set in
step 7 and name them MAIN.WSS
and MAIN.WSW respectively. The
name MAIN will be inserted into
the list box. You have now backed
up your current Windows setup.
Now, you can haul out your OS/2
disks or CD-ROM and put the OS/2
desktop into another video mode. When
you do,the WINOS2 desktop will be put
in the same mode. Then start Winos2-
Set and press the Register button.
Type in a new registration name - say
256COLOR - and press OK to accept
and save it. Now you have saved the
present WINOS2 setup. That includes
video mode and anything else covered
in the Windows .INI files. The name
256COLOR has been inserted into the
list box.
Now you can select either of the
choices and press the Swap button to
set which setup you want to use. Put
the stack of disks away. You don't
need them for that now.
Following is a brief description of
the buttons and menu choices in the
program :
BUTTONS
Register :
This will always register and back
up the CURRENT Windows .INI
files to a new registered name. If
you want to update currently reg-
istered files use the Update Select-
ed Registered Files as explained
below.

This will NOT delete your Windows
.INI files. Select a registered name
in the list box and It WILL delete
the .WSS and .WSW backup files
associated with it and delete the
name in the list box.
Swap :
Select a registered name, press
this button and the program will
copy backup files to YOUR
WINDOWS directory and REPLACE
YOUR .INI files with the .WSS
and .WSW files.
Quit :
If you really need to have docu-
mentation to know what this button
is for, please send me your phone
number. I've got some prime farm
land in Arizona I'd like to sell you.

HELP
Choosing Help on the menu bar will
display this file - WINSET.DOC.
NOTES AND WARNINGS!
Be careful. Always backup your
system files! It is always a good idea
to do this no matter what programs you
use.
One thing to remember is that there
are some limitations to OS/2 if you
run WINOS2 in one video mode and
your Desktop in another mode. Some-
times you can get video corruption if
you switch back and forth with CTRL-
ESC or ALT-ESC. Also, you may not
be able to run "Seamless" windows if
the Desktop is in a different mode
WINOS2. But it is not that big of a
deal since it is easy to switch
WINOS2 to what you want it to be.
If there is enough interest in this
program I may do a version with my
Borland C++ compiler. That would
make it start a lot faster. VX-REXX
is a little slow since it does a whole
different thing than most compilers do.
However, I am not in a real big hurry
to do this in C. It would take consid-
erably more time and effort.
Please let me know what features
and/or ideas any of you may have in
regard to Winos2-Set. With VX-REXX
it doesn't take long to make most code
changes!
So, that's it. Registration info is
on the About Winos2-Set screen.
