Post your questions and thoughts about chapter 1 as a response to this
message.
Is your product a discontinuous innovation or a continuous innovation?
Does the notion of "cracks in the bell curve" fit your observations about your
business, about IBM's marketing challenges with OS/2, with the world of high
technology in general?
Have you been marketing your application as a *change agent* or a
*productivity improvement*? Has that message been sent to the right audiences?
Dive right in.

More continuous as innovation goes. (For the customers I want to win, though,
it might come as an earth-shaking discontinuous change to adopt the tool).
Putting OS/2 and Prolog to work together in PMPro is something like putting a
compressor (turbo-charger) and a V-8 engine together. Neither is novel, but
together they do something better than either alone.
>>Does the notion of "cracks in the bell curve" fit your observations about
your business, about IBM's marketing challenges with OS/2, with the world of
high technology in general?<<
Absolutely. It really explains a lot of experiences and puts them in
perspective. Since Prolog is "AI" oriented, it has been in the chasm for some
time already. PMPro is a new startup, and needs to cross its own sector of
the chasm with care.
Where is OS/2 now in this? I was an early adopter (not really an innovator on
this one because I needed something before I would try it -- more memory space
for "AI"), and have read many obituaries for OS/2 with some concern and
trepidation. Now it seems to me that it is crawling up out of the right hand
side of the chasm -- slowly, but still climbing. What do you think?
High tech in general: this contribution to the theory is brilliant -- and
obvious after you think about it.
>>*change agent* or a *productivity improvement*?<<
A little of both so far -- it really is a good learning tool but has
industrial-strength features you could put to work. It also really is a
superior programming paradigm in many ways.
INTERESTING POINT: It is observed to be much easier to teach a non-programmer
Prolog, than an experienced programmer. Should my market really be <<people
who could benefit by gaining more control over the computer and OS/2, but who
are not programmers and don't want to be career programmers>> ?

Greg,
A couple of questions, that might be illuminating, or maybe not<g>. I have
followed AI for quite some time, at least at the theoretical level, and
Kohenan nets (phonetic spelling as I do not remember the gentlemens name's
correct spelling). Anyway they were self learning, and this has always
intrigued me. In that I like to write code that reports on the innards of
machines and operating systems, BUT I want to go beyound this, and alter the
settings of the operating system and hardware in order to have a machine self
tune and diagnose.
For this I feel that the program must learn from the past and project into
the future, and the most difficult part for a program of course is, WHEN TO DO
NOTHING.
So why am I writing this stuff to you<g>, I write only in assembler, and am
going to be looking into the above again at some point. So the question is,
would your product enable to start understanding the engine of AI to a
detailed degree such that I could come up to speed on the AI, and then
retrofit this back into assembler? Also would your product help me in starting
to play with fuzzy logic? As this is another area in this quest that I feel
should not be overlooked.
I guess the basic question is, "Can I learn enough about AI from your Prolog
implementation to retrofit into my application?"
Not a very fair question<g>.
