1. Overview
=============
This INSTALL.EXE driver package provides you with IBM's most current support
for Mouse and TrackPoint devices on the OS/2 Operating System.
In the past there were two separate drivers - generic mouse driver MOUSE.SYS
(automatically installed during OS/2 installation) and optional TrackPoint
driver MOUSE2.SYS (located in the \OPTIONS\TP4\ directory on your OS/2
installation CD-ROM).
The SingleMouse package combines the functionality of both these drivers into one.
Now all mouse and TrackPoint related preferences could be changed in Mouse applet
in [OS/2 System]-[System setup] folder.
This is a required update for ThinkPad T30 owners to fix problems with TrackPoint
that may stop working after suspend/resume with CP2 drivers.
2. SingleMouse installation instructions
==========================================
Unzip installation files to your temporary directory and run SMOUSE.EXE.
Installer will verify that all files required for installation are present and
automatically will upgrade already installed files to the latest version.
If the file in SingleMouse package is older than file already installed the
user will be asked whether to use file from package or leave original file
unchanged. Unattended installation can be performed by providing response file
SMOUSE.RSP and running SMOUSE.EXE with /X command line parameter.
A list of files copied/replaced/backed-up is created in the file \OS2\SMOUSE.LOG
on your system drive. This file is updated each time you run mouse installation.
For changes to take place the system reboot is required.
SingleMouse will not work with Warp3 or older systems. On Warp4 system you have
to install the XR_M005 (revision 9.029) or later fixpak before you can proceed
with SingleMouse installation.
3. Notes on supported hardware compatibility
==============================================
The SingleMouse package is designed to support both an External Mouse and the
built-in TrackPoint mouse on IBM ThinkPads. In some situations the driver may
apply some limitations to allow these two devices to co-exist on the same machine.
For example the Microsoft IntelliMouse compatible devices with scrolling wheel or
mice with a joystick are not directly compatible with TrackPoints and as result the
TrackPoint will be automatically disabled in favor of the external mouse on these
configurations. This is necessary in order to use such extended features of external
device as srolling wheel or joystick. When incompatible mouse is detached the
TrackPoint is automatically re-enabled.
Depending on specific hardware compatibility some issues can arise with the Hot-Plug
feature when plugged device is not correctly detected or the extended features are not
automatically enabled. If you feel that Hot-Plug is not working then put your computer
in Stand-By mode, plug in the new external mouse and then wake-up computer. Upon exit
from sleep your new mouse should be correctly detected and initialized. If even that
does not help you should avoid using Hot-Plug feature.
There are some mice that are not able to work in combination with TrackPoint even in
compatibility mode. For example the Kensington mouse could only be used when the
TrackPoint is disabled in BIOS.
4. Some usability notes and hints
===================================
Scroller tab.
If your device has a wheel (or stick) then you can use it to move focus between icons simply
by scrolling it. If you select 'Use PM scroll' then instead of changing the focus the content
of window is scrolled (if scrollbars of window are visible).
Press-to-Select (only for TrackPoint).
If you check 'Enable Press-to-Select' then instead of pressing the TrackPoint buttons you can
press the TrackPoint itself. You can even simplify dragging by checking the 'Enable Dragging'.
In that case to avoid confusion make sure that 'Press Means' button is set to the same button
as 'Dragging objects' button in 'Mappings' tab.
Scrolling.
If you select 'Magnifying Glass' then pressing the left button changes the zooming factor but
right button changes the size of the magnifying glass. To exit the magnifying glass mode just
press both left and right buttons simultaneously.
