ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Background Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
I created this file from the information I was able to collect for a segment on
WRC-TV's (channel 4) Volunteer-4. The shelter where I work actually had to
close its doors for several hours one Saturday last year because there was no
volunteer available! This was the first time Project Echo had been forced to
put people out since it opened for 24 hour a day operations nearly 18 months
prior.
A group of experienced shelter volunteers and I attended a "brainstorming"
session just after the holidays last year, and one of our ideas was to try to
recruit new volunteers via WRC-TV's Volunteer-4 segment. When I contacted Julie
Asher at WRC, she told me that they'd really be interested in a coaltion, if
you will, of shelters through the entire Washington area, rather than a single
shelter in Calvert County.
Within another month or so I was able to contact shelters who needed volunteers
in D.C. and all of the bordering jurisdictions. I think I sent the fax that
told Julie as much to the bit bucket, because she never received it. But we got
in touch again in the spring and I began searching for still more contacts in
other jurisdictions. The end result was a segment on Volunteer-4, on June 26,
1995.
All of the shelters whose contacts are listed in this document are in need of
volunteers. Volunteering can mean just about anything from staffing the shelter
office for a shift or helping with physical repairs to providing transportation
or helping in a literacy or job training program. The needs of each shelter
differ according to their mission, their clients' needs, and their present
staffing levels.
I have some more information about some of these shelters, and I'm thinking of
creating and maintaining a file of such information which I can distribute
regularly. If you know of another shelter in the area which is staffed, even
partially by volunteers, and can get the contact information to me, please send
it along. If it seems that this will be useful, I'll stop "thinking" about it
<g>.
In the past I have posted calls for volunteers to help at local computer stores
as we spread the word about the best selling 32-bit OS for Intel architecture
machines. The turnout for these events has always impressed me. But there are
more important needs in our community. One of the most basic is the need for
shelter. Give your help to one of these shelters if you can.
