WHAT PRYNET! DOES
----------------------------
PryNet! is a Client/Server Application, which can be used by HelpDesk and
LAN Administrators on an OS/2 Network to make working with a REMOTE
system much easier. Through the use of PryNet!, there is no need
to "Walk" an end user through doing a NET USE or many other commands
that need to be done when fixing a problem over the phone.
PryNet! uses the NETBIOS protocol to do remote collection of important
system information as well as remote updates of configuration files.
Using PryNet!, you can:
- Terminate hung applications on a remote system.
- Reconnect, disconnect, and add Net Uses to a remote system.
- Create an Icon on a remote system.
- Collect a software inventory of a remote system using an
extensive database of defined applications to search for.
(The inventory database can be modified to search for
specific applications used on your network)
- File transfers to and from a remote system.
- Shutdown or reset a remote system.
- Start Applications on a remote system.
- Collect Adapter Information. i.e. What type of card is
installed (Token Ring or EtherNet), it's burned in
address and supplied address, and the resources it
has free and being used.
- CSD Levels. Collect the CSD Levels for a remote system.
- System Information. Including memory installed, drive space
available, both LOCAL hard drives and Networked drives.
- Collect Startup.CMD, Config.SYS, Ibmlan.INI and Protocol.INI.
Update them locally and send the updated version back to
the remote system!
- You can run Network Updates of software Remotely!
- This application will upgrade itself when a new version is
available! (No Need to walk around and install to EVERY Machine)
INSTALLATION
----------------------------
PryNet! has Three parts:
The Client executable - PRCLIENT.EXE which runs on the REMOTE PC.
Press the RIGHT mouse button on the blue bar to open the menu.
A FrontEnd executable - PRYNET.EXE which runs on the LOCAL PC
from which you call a Remote PC.
And a Server executable - PRYSRV.EXE which runs on any machine on the
network and monitors the network for errors and symptoms. The Server
also collects mass amounts of information for reporting from each Remote
PC that is running the Client software.
**Note - the Server is included with the Registered version of PryNet! only.
To install, at an OS/2 Prompt where the PryNet Executables are
located, type:
NETINST
Then Press <Enter>.
You will then have to choose wether to install the Server Portion (Used
on the Local PC to CALL a remote system) or the Client Portion
(Used on the client whose system you wish to collect information from)
When Prompted for the Client Name, enter the Name of the user who
uses that system. Press the OK pushbutton.
What it does:
When Client is chosen:
It will copy the neccesary Executable code to the C:\PRYNET directory,
and also edits the Startup.cmd file to automatically run PrClient.exe
upon bootup. It will also remove any spaces in the Name and replace them
with an UNDERSCORE (_).
NOTE: You will need to remember the name you used so you can add
it to the Client Database in the PryNet! Application.
***********************************************************************
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If the NETINST program is run from a Hard Drive (Network or Local),
the CLIENTS database is automatically updated with the Client
Name entered, easing the burden of the Help desk Personnel
or LAN Specialist of entering the names individually.
In order for this to function, the CLIENTS.DBF and CLIENTS.CDX
files MUST be in the working directory of the NETINST Application.
***********************************************************************
When FrontEnd is chosen:
It will copy the neccesary Executable code to the C:\PRYNET directory,
and also creates an Icon on your Desktop entitled PryNet!
The NETINST Install Application is perfect for use in a Network
Environment. End Users can install the software themselves with
just a little help from the Help Desk personnel!
(XCOPY all neccessary files to a shared drive and have them
run NETINST at a command prompt, there is no need to have a specialist
update the system in any way!)
You can also FORCE the NETINST Application to install the client
(Without the choice of installing the server) by specifying /C as
the first parameter on the Command Line, i.e.:
NETINST /C
(That way, End Users can't accidentally install the wrong software
to their system).
BETA RELEASE NOTES
----------------------------
This Beta has been tested on BOTH Token-Ring and EtherNet networks
running NETBIOS. LAN Requester need not be running on either the
remote system or the Local system, however some funcionality is lost
when a user is NOT logged on to the Network.
Being Worked On:
- IBMLAN.INI and PROTOCOL.ini may not be found if the directory
in which they reside is NOT in the PATH statement.
- The system may appear to hang when a remote client does not
respond in time. (It will time out after 2 Minutes and return
your system to normal though). This will be fixed and the system
will return with the correct error codes soon.
- Adding to or deleting from the Inventory Database has NOT
been implemented yet.
Any comments or suggestions to this product would be greatly appreciated.
If there is any information you wish to collect from a remote system,
that is not already being collected, let us know and we will implement
it!
This application is also available as a module to the HelpNet! Help Desk
application allowing for a saved database of End User workstations.
