ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. General Help for Configuration Manager ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Configuration Manager is an OS/2* application that gives users access to PCMCIA
socket status and PC card information. Configuration Manager can launch the
Workplace object that is registered to the PC card.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Configuration Manager Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following is a list of the options in the Configuration Manager menu,
accompanied by a brief description. For more information about each menu and
its functions, double-click on its name below:
Options Selections used to customize Configuration Manager and
Register Object
Help Selections used to display help information
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Details View ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The details view displays summarized information about all sockets and the PC
cards in those sockets.
For a detailed explanation of each field, select from the list below:
o Socket number
o Card Type
o Card Status
More detailed information about the card can be displayed by:
o Double-clicking on the card
o Highlighting the card and pressing Enter.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
These options are used to customize Configuration Manager.
The following items are available from this menu:
Customize Selections used to customize window and beep choices
Register Object Selections used to add or remove objects
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
These options are used to get help information about the Configuration Manager.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Help Index ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This option is used to get the Help index.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. About Card Services ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window shows the information about Card Services.
Vendor Vendor name
Release PCMCIA Release level
Revision OS/2 revision number of Card Services
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Product Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window shows the version number of the Configuration Manager.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Card Status ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
There are two states for a Memory PC card, and four states for an I/O PC card:
Memory Cards
Empty There is no PC card in the socket.
Inserted A PC card is inserted. Configuration Manager shows this
state for a Memory PC card only.
I/O cards
Empty There is no PC card in the socket.
Ready A PC card is ready to use and can be removed from the
socket.
Ready A PC card is ready to use but cannot be removed from the
socket.
Not Ready A PC card is inserted but not configured.
Note: Some PC cards are not configured until they are
accessed by an appropriate program or a user.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Card Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field shows the PC card information, such as vendor name and data
location.
Note: When the Modem PC card is configured by AUTODRV2.SYS, Configuration
Manager shows the COMx information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Write Protect ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Some memory cards have write protection capabilities so that data may be read
from the device but not written to the device. This write protection might be
a manual switch on the card cover or an electrical switch controlled by device
drivers and applications.
The Write Protect status of the PC card is as follows:
NO PC card Write Protect is OFF. This indicates that the device is not
protected such that the data is read/write. Refer to the PC card's
particular documentation on protecting the card against inadvertent
writing or erasure.
YES PC card Write Protect is ON. This indicates that the device is
protected such that the data is read-only, which means data cannot be
written to it.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Battery ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The battery status of the PC card is as follows:
Note: Only memory cards use batteries.
GOOD Battery is good. The PC card is operational.
LOW Battery status is low. You must exchange the battery of the PC card.
Refer to the documentation on battery installation that came with the
PC card.
DEAD Battery is dead. The PC card battery is depleted and should be
replaced if possible.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Region ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field shows the region information of the memory type and size for the PC
card. Memory cards contain specific types of memory devices, such as SRAM
(statis random access memory) and DRAM (dynamic random access memory).
Each memory device on a PC card can be used as a region of the card memory.
Most memory cards contain only a single memory device region. For example, a
4MB Flash Memory Card would most likely contain a single 4MB Flash Memory
Region.
The memory types available on a PC card are:
o Masked ROM
o One-time PROM
o UV EPROM
o EEPROM
o Flash EPROM
o Static RAM
o Dynamic RAM
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Details of I/O Card ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window shows detailed information about the socket and specific
information about the I/O PC card.
For a detailed explanation of each field, select from the list below:
o Card Information
o Assigned Resources
o OK
Note: Memory regions of I/O cards are not displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Details of Memory Card ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window shows detailed information about the socket and specific
information about the Memory PC card.
For a detailed explanation of each field, select from the list below:
o Card Information
o Write Protect
o Battery
o Region
o OK
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Customize ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window enables you to specify when the Configuration Manager window will
be displayed and when a beep will sound, depending on the card status. It also
enables you to keep the Configuration Manager icon in the foreground (visible).

o Defaults
Note: Configuration Manager must be open for these selections to become
active.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Register Object ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window enables you to register objects such as applications, programs, and
folders to a specific PC Card type. As soon as the object is registered, it
will launch (start) according to the launch choices you have made.

Note: Configuration Manager must be open for these selections to become
active.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Object Launcher ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When more than two objects are registered, or you have selected Manually as one
of your launch choices, the Object Launcher window appears. It provides
information on the inserted card and associated objects available for launching
(starting).

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Socket ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field refers to the sockets (PCMCIA slots) on your computer. The number
of sockets varies from computer to computer, but most have two. Generally, the
top socket is referred to as number 1, but this also can vary.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Assigned Resources ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field displays the system resources used by the PC Card:
IRQ Interrupt Request Levels are primarily used by a device to tell the
device driver that it has data or a command status to be read from
the I/O Ports.
I/O I/O Ports are primarily used by a device driver to read from and
write data to a device.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Window and Beep Choices ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field allows you to display the Configuration Manager window when a PC
card is used and to set a beep depending on the card status.
To display the Configuration Manager window or to set a beep, select the check
box to the right of Inserted, Removed, Ready, or Not ready.
Note: You can have as many combinations of Display Window choices and Beep
choices as you like.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Configuration Manager Always Visible ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field enables you to always have the Configuration Manager icon in the
foreground (visible). For example, if you have a program that takes up the
full screen, you might want to always have the Configuration Manager icon
displayed and available for use.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Object List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field enables you to register (associate) objects to a specific PC card.
To register an object:
1. Select an object such as an application or a program on your desktop.
2. Drag and drop the selected object on this field.
Note: This field will list only the name of the object.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Launch Choices ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field enables you to make changes that affect how the registered object
will be launched (started).
Select Automatically or Manually to indicate how you would like the object to
be launched. If you select Manually, or register more than one object, the
Object Launcher window will be displayed.
Select any of the choices under When card is to indicate when you would like to
launch the object.
Note: The Ready and Not ready choices work only with I/O card types.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Object List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field lists all objects you have registered to the inserted PC card. To
launch the object:
1. Select the name of the object in the Object List.
2. Select Launch.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. PC Card Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Configuration Manager has the following card types to identify the PC card :
Boot
3270, 5250, Ethernet, LAN, SDLC, Token Ring
Hard Drive, AIMS
I/O, Multi-function, Parallel, SCSI
Memory
Modem, Serial
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Select Card Type ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field lists the available card types. To select a card type:
1. Click on the down arrow to the right of the Select a card type field to
display a list of available card types.
2. Select the card type that best matches the function of the PC card you are
using.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Default Settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following are the default settings for Register Object and Customize:
Register Object
Select Card Type: No default
Object List: All objects are removed for the selected card type
Start an object: Automatically
When card is: Inserted
Customize
Beep: Inserted, Removed
Always visible: No
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. OK ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select OK to enter your selections.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Cancel if you want to cancel the operation without making a selection.
