  1. This file is to try to help you recover your system if (I hope not) the 
  2. program will not work or does something strange to your system.
  3.  
  4. The program works by simply archiving the OS2SYS.INI and OS2.INI files
  5. these are stored in a directory (user specified) as USERNAME.ini.  If you
  6. cannot install MUSER.EXE in your system then nothing has been done by this
  7. program to effect your system.  If you do sucessfully run the MINSTALL.EXE 
  8. program then all that has happened is OS2MUSER.INI has been created in the
  9. current directory and another file called DEFAULT.INI has also been created.
  10. Neither of these files should have caused any problems to the system.

  12. The next step in the installation procedure was to add the approiate lines
  13. to the CONFIG.SYS file.  If this was done and you rebooted then things are
  14. more complicated.  When OS2 starts up it runs the MUSER program before to much
  15. has happened to the system (still have access to the ini files without any 
  16. complications).  The program will archive the current ini files as the previous
  17. USERNAME then present a screen to prompt for a new user name.  If all was
  18. successful here then MUSER unarchives that users ini files and writes them
  19. over the systems ones.  The program then terminates and allows OS2 to start
  20. up with the approiate user desktop installed.

  22. To recover from here requires a boot disk and an editor.  You must boot from 
  23. disk then edit the CONFIG.SYS file to remove the MUSER line (or copy the backup
  24. config.sys from the backup disk you were asked to create before installing 
  25. MUSER).  Next you must copy the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI files from the backup
  26. disk (or from anywere else they were copied to) over the ones in 
  27. drive:\os2 this will reinstall your ini files. now reboot and everything should
  28. be fine.

  30. If this still hasn't helpped the situation then you can startup with <ALT><F1>
  31. held down which will reinstall the default ini files from installation time.
  32. !!!! This will lose any customisations that you have done !!!!

  34. If this all still fails then you are on your own.  Please send me a full 
  35. description of what happened so that I can try to identify the problem and
  36. correct it for the future.
