  7. WHAT IS THE "OS/2 WARP MERLIN BETA THEME"
  8. -----------------------------------------
  9. OS/2 Warp is a mature, innovative 32 bit operating system for IBM PC
  10. compatibles from IBM that allows you to run all of your old DOS and
  11. Windows applications while allowing you to run new 32bit applications.
  12. OS/2 is in many ways more powerful than Windows 95 but without the
  13. hardware requirements of Windows NT and is intended for the power user.

  15. The next version of OS/2, code-named Merlin (named for the bird of prey),
  16. is due out this fall.  It will include OpenGL, JAVA as part of the
  17. operating system, Voice Type Dictation, Voice Navigation, True Type
  18. Font support, OpenDoc and more. This theme, like my "Warp 95" theme brings
  19. some of the look of the next version of OS/2 Warp to Windows 95.

  22. INTRODUCTION
  23. ------------
  24. After many years of working with OS/2, I have grown attached to its unique
  25. clean style.  I only use Windows 95 occasionally, in part to support other
  26. users, but I thought I could import some of OS/2 Warp's interface to
  27. Windows 95.

  29. Unfortunately, the Windows 95 shell is not as configurable as OS/2 and so
  30. I have not been able to bring over all the details (like the colour of the
  31. icon titles and short cuts: I have not figured out how to change them).  I
  32. have included a number of bonus icons, bitmaps and sounds so that you can
  33. further customize your system.  For example, I have changed my printer and
  34. drives icons to something more familiar.

  36. This theme provides for only cosmetic changes, and it does not have any
  37. of the unique functionality of OS/2's WorkPlace Shell.  There is the IBM
  38. employee written freeware Warp for Windows which does this for Windows 3.1
  39. (available at ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/ews) but Window 95 has
  40. copied in part some of the best features of the OS/2 WorkPlace Shell.

  42. If you are interested in OS/2 Warp, it can happily coexist with Windows 95
  43. on your system.  IBM has produced the Just Add OS/2 Warp Kit to help analyze
  44. your system and to provide advice on how to add Warp, or how to migrate your
  45. system to OS/2 as well as assist you in the process. You can reach it at:

  49. THIS THEME
  50. ----------
  51. This Theme can be used without the Microsoft Plus! pack for Windows 95 but
  52. it requires that you make the customizations yourself.  If you have the
  53. Microsoft Plus! pack, you can use the Desktop Themes application in the
  54. Control Panel to install most of the changes.  Otherwise, follow the
  55. installation instructions after the file listing.

  153. 1 Extract the .ZIP file to a temporary directory.
  154. 2 Read this README.TXT file!
  155. 3 Make a backup copies of your logos.sys and logow.sys in your Windows
  156.   directory.
  157. 4 Copy logos.sys and logow.sys to your Windows directory.
  158. 5 Copy logo.sys to your root directory.
  159. 6 Copy all the remaining files to your themes directory.

  161. If you are using Microsoft Plus!, double click on Desktop Themes in the
  162. control panel.
  163.  
  164. If you do not have Microsort Plus! you can still use theis theme but
  165. you have to install all the components by hand using the control panel.
  166.  
  167. The sound files can be copied to C:\Windows\Media and then applied using
  168. Sounds application in the Control Panel.
  169.  
  170. The cursors can be copied to C:\Windows\Cursors and then applied using
  171. the Mouse application in the Control Panel.
  172.  
  173. The icons can be copied to C:\Windows and then applied individually to
  174. Shortcuts by right-clicking on each object to bring up the pop-up
  175. menu, selecting Properties, and then Change Icon.  To modify system
  176. icons like My Compuer you can modify the Windows registry, using
  177. RegEdit.EXE which comes with Windows95. Backup your System.DAT,
  178. System.DA0, User.DAT, and User.DA0 files first (they are hidden system
  179. files)!

  181. I recommend MS Sans Serif 8 points as the font for all windows and icons.
  182. And I recommend the screen saver from "The 60's" theme from the Microsoft
  183. Plus! pack.
