  16. INTRODUCTION
  17.  
  18. MDesk is an add-on or shell replacement for the WPS.  The
  19. product offers excellent program launching facilities, as well as numerous
  20. utilities which will increase your productivity with OS/2.
  21.  
  22. When used as a shell replacement, you save about 2-3 MB of RAM as compared
  23. to the typical memory use of the WPS.  You will also find that MDesk
  24. is much faster that the WPS, especially when Objects Desktop is also
  25. running on top of the WPS.

  27. For more information, browse through the "Overview" sections the on-line
  28. user's guide (MDGuide.INF).

  30. Upgraders may want to browse through the "Release History" section of the
  31. on-line user's guide to get a listing of improvements, changes, and new
  32. features.

  35. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  36.  
  37. NOTE: You will need about 900KB of hard disk space to be able to install
  38.       MDesk.  If you are upgrading, you'll need about 400KB free.
  39.  
  40. 1. Unzip this archive (MDESK1??.ZIP) to a temporary directory.
  41.  
  42. If you are upgrading, please refer to that section in the user's manual
  43. before proceding.  In particular, _don't_ continue if MDesk is
  44. currently your shell.
  45.  
  46. 2. Type MDSETUP _from_ that temporary directory.
  47.  
  48. The Setup Utility will handle all the installation for you.
  49. In particular:
  50.  
  51.     1. Copy the files to their new home directory (which you may choose).
  52.     2. Create WPS objects for the programs.
  53.     3. Add the new home directory to the PATH, LIBPATH, and BOOKSHELF.
  54.     4. Save some settings in OS2.INI.
  55.     5. Create the standard MDesk Folders and Program Objects.
  56.     6. Install the MDesk device driver.
  57.  
  58. Steps 3,4,5 are taken only when this is a first time installation.
  59.  
  60. After MDesk Setup is done, exit it and do the following:
  61.  
  62. 3. Delete all files left in the temporary directory.
  63. 4. Shutdown, and reboot your system.
  64.

  66. IMPORTANT NOTES:
  67.  
  68.     1. UnInstall does not remove MDesk's entries in PATH, LIBPATH, and
  69.        BOOKSHELF directives of the Config.sys file, neither does it take out
  70.        the DEVICE= statement for the MDesk device driver.
  71.  
  72.     2. The visual appearance of MDesk is greatly improved on systems where
  73.        the frame colour is set to light grey.
  74.  
  75.     3. OS/2 2.x is no longer supported.  To make sure no one attempts to run
  76.        MDesk on a 2.x system, the main executable (MDESK.EXE) was made
  77.        Warp only.

  79.     4. Those upgrading from versions 1.1 or less will find that their
  80.        folder positions and colours will be returned to their defaults.
  81.        This was unavoidable, and I apologize.

  84. NOTE: If you find anything you think is bug, and it is not listed in the
  85.       "Known Problems" section of the user's guide please report it.

  91. This package was primarily designed by me, John McCalla, which of is also the
  92. origin of the program's name (M for McCalla).  An incredible amount of work
  93. was spent developing this project.  So please, if you want to honour this
  94. work, and insure the software continues to evolve, register !!

  97. really encouraged me to improve MDesk.  It is wonderful to hear the stories
  98. of how MDesk has improved your OS/2 systems.  I would expecially like
  99. to thank those who have actively promoted MDesk in their OS/2 user groups and
