  10. This readme describes steps that you need to take to get the LAN Distance
  11. Remote product for MS Windows to run on Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  12.  
  13.

  15. │  READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU BEGIN SETUP STEPS  │
  16. └───────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
  17.  
  18.  *  The Windows for Workgroups product and any Windows applications that
  19.     you are using should operate correctly in the LAN environment BEFORE
  20.     you install the LAN Distance product.
  21.  
  22.     Note: Do not configure Windows For Workgroups to LOGON to the
  23.     LAN on startup. Do not attempt to logon to the LAN until
  24.     your LAN Distance connection has been established.
  25.  
  26.  *  Both LAN Distance installation and Network Setup for Windows for
  27.     Workgroups prompt you to restart your workstation to make configuration
  28.     changes active.
  29.  
  30.     It's only necessary to restart your workstation ONCE--after you complete
  31.     the steps that follow.
  32.  
  33.  *  You must always run CFMERGE.EXE after making changes to your LAN Distance
  34.     configuration that update the WAL\PROTOCOL.INI. Additionally, if you
  35.     make changes to the Windows PROTOCOL.INI using Network Setup run
  36.     CFMERGE.EXE. CFMERGE.EXE merges information from the WAL\PROTOCOL.INI
  37.     into the windows PROTOCOL.INI which is used by Windows for Workgroups.
  38.     See Step 6, "CFMERGE.EXE".
  39.  
  40.  *  You may experience the following NETBEUI incompatibility symptoms when
  41.     using the version of NETBEUI provided with Windows for Workgroups. Only
  42.     use the IBM NetBEUI if you see this problem.
  43.  
  44.     o  After you dial the LAN Distance Connection Server, the
  45.        connection status never changes from "connecting" to
  46.        "connected".
  47.     o  After about 30 seconds, this message is displayed:
  48.  
  49.     WCL0338: A processing error occurred in the LAN Distance
  50.          connection software.  The call to 'your phonebook
  51.          entry name' cannot be completed.
  52.  
  53.          The return code from Dial Services was 'a'.
  54.  
  55.     If you experience this problem, replace the NETBEUI provided by
  56.     Windows for Workgroups with the NETBEUI provided by LAN Distance.
  57.     See Step 4, "Network Setup".
  58.  
  59.  *  Other possible configuration problems are described in Step 7,
  60.     "Other Possible PROTOCOL.INI Changes".
  61.  
  62.  *  In addition to the steps provided here, sample configuration
  63.     files for some applications are provided as a reference.
  64.  
  65.  *  Additional changes are required if you installed LAN Distance on a drive
  66.     other than the C: drive.  See Step 8, "Drive Changes".
  67.  
  68.  *  Additional steps for removing LAN Distance are required.  See Step 10,
  69.     "Removing LAN Distance" and Step 1, "Shuttle".

  73. │ STEP 1. SHUTTLE  (**Required**)  │

  76. The shuttle function provided in LAN Distance was not updated to work with
  77. Windows for Workgroups and will be disabled when you run CFMERGE.EXE.
  78.  
  79. Follow the following instructions to manually shuttle between a LAN Distance
  80. remote and a LAN attached workstation:
  81.  
  82. 1.  Before you install LAN Distance save your configuration files for your
  83.     LAN attached workstation.
  84.  
  85.     MKDIR SHUTTLE
  86.     COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS C:\SHUTTLE\CONFIG.LAN
  87.     COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\SHUTTLE\AUTOEXEC.LAN
  88.     COPY C:\WINDOWS\PROTOCOL.INI C:\SHUTTLE\PROTOCOL.LAN
  89.     COPY C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI C:\SHUTTLE\SYSTEM.LAN
  90.  
  91. 2.  When you install LAN Distance, select "Yes" at the shuttle message
  92.     asking you to work as a LAN Distance remote workstation or a LAN
  93.     workstation.
  94.  
  95. 3.  After you get LAN Distance working, save your configuration files for
  96.     your LAN Distance remote (GO TO Step 2 for installing LAN Distance
  97.     and Step 3 for LAN Distance patch instructions).
  98.  
  99.     COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS C:\SHUTTLE\CONFIG.RWS

  104. 4.  Whenever you want to shuttle, copy the appropriate configuration files
  105.     back before you shutdown and restart your machine.    For example, if you
  106.     are shuttling to a LAN attached workstation, do the following:
  107.  
  108.     COPY C:\SHUTTLE\CONFIG.LAN C:\CONFIG.SYS
  109.     COPY C:\SHUTTLE\AUTOEXEC.LAN C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
  110.     COPY C:\SHUTTLE\PROTOCOL.LAN C:\WINDOWS\PROTOCOL.INI
  111.     COPY C:\SHUTTLE\SYSTEM.LAN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI

  123. Install the LAN Distance Remote for Windows product Patch LD11WFWR.ZIP
  124. Please read the LD11WFWR.TXT for instructions on how to apply the patch.
  125. After applying the patch, continue with step 4 below.  DO NOT reboot
  126. after applying the patch, otherwise, you will get boot errors.    If you
  127. do reboot, just press Enter to get by the errors and then continue with
  128. step 4 below.

  134. LAN Distance provides an OEMSETUP.INF file that allows you to add the
  135. "LAN Distance Logical Adapter" to the list of adapters that you can select
  136. for Windows for Workgroups.
  137.  
  138. o  From the list of adapters that Network Setup supports, select
  139.    "Unlisted or updated network adapter", then enter the LAN Distance
  140.    path (i.e., C:\WAL), in the Install Driver window.  This adds
  141.    the LAN Distance Logical Adapter to the list of supported adapters.
  142.  
  143.    Note: If you have a physical adapter defined and you will not be
  144.    using this adapter on a local LAN when using LAN Distance, then
  145.    delete the physical adapter.
  146.  
  147. If you experience NETBEUI incompatibility symtoms, you must replace MS NetBEUI
  148. with the LAN Distance NetBEUI.    Only use the IBM NetBEUI if you are getting
  149. the WCL0338 error described above. The OEMSETUP.INF file provided by LAN
  150. Distance allows you to add "IBM NetBEUI" to the list of protocols that you
  151. can select for Windows for Workgroups.
  152.  
  153. o  From the list of protocols that Network Setup supports, select
  154.    "Unlisted or updated protocol", then enter the LAN Distance path
  155.    (i.e., C:\WAL), in the Install Driver window.  This adds IBM NetBEUI to
  156.    the list of supported protocols. After adding the IBM NetBEUI protocol,
  157.    delete the MS NetBEUI protocol.
  158.  
  159.    Note: Once you have rebooted the workstation in STEP 9, if you are
  160.    getting an error when the workstation is restarted, then check the
  161.    following in the windows SYSTEM.INI file. In the Network Drivers
  162.    section, make sure that x:\WAL\DXMJ0MOD.SYS is the only thing on the
  163.    transport line.
  164.  
  165. For general information about configuring network adapters and protocols
  166. for Windows for Workgroups, see the "Windows for Workgroups Resource Kit".

  173. If you did not complete Basic Settings during LAN Distance installation,
  174. you will need to do additional configuration through the settings notebook.
  175.  
  176. Otherwise, continue with step 6 below.
  177.  
  178. For assistance configuring the LAN Distance product, see the LAN Distance
  179. publications.

  193. o  In Step 9, you will restart your workstation. If you receive a
  194.    Protocol Manager binding error message when you restart your
  195.    workstation, then it's likely that sections of your PROTOCOL.INI file
  196.    are not bound to the SOCKDD_MOD.
  197.  
  198.    Modify the binding statements (BINDINGS=) in the Windows PROTOCOL.INI which
  199.    do not list SOCKDD_MOD as the first parameter.  If a bindings statement has
  200.    only one parameter, the parameter is replaced with SOCKDD_MOD.
  201.  
  202. o  If you experience performance problems on a LAN workstation that you are
  203.    accessing from a MS Windows LAN Distance Remote, add the following timer
  204.    statements to the NETBEUI section of the PROTOCOL.INI file for this LAN
  205.    workstation.
  206.

  211. o  If you receive LAN Distance error message 310 at the LAN Distance Remote
  212.    before you finish dialing the LAN Distance Connection Server, change the
  213.    MaxFrame value in the COMx section (i.e. COM1) of the PROTOCOL.INI file to
  214.    1536.

  221. If you installed LAN Distance on a drive other than the C: drive, do the
  222. following:

  224. o  Edit SYSTEM.INI and change all the LAN Distance drive references in the
  225.    [network drivers] section from C to your LAN Distance drive letter.
  226.  
  227. o  Edit CONFIG.SYS and change all the LAN Distance drive references from
  228.    C to your LAN Distance drive letter.

  262.    would run in the Windows for Workgroup environment.    For your information,
