ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. General Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
FamShell is easy to configure, and even easier to use!
It's intended as a simple OS/2 shell for members of your family, household
etc. who don't really want to get involved with computers - or have just
started out with them - but wish to use the pc for limited purposes such as
homework, games and so on... FamShell provides an easy desktop for such users,
where every button does more or less what it says. The shell sits on top of the
WPS and allows access to it at any time. I suggest you put the icon created on
your desktop during installation in your startup folder. That way, FamShell is
evoked during the boot procedure, but you can easily click it away if you wish
to use the WPS. Otherwise, leave the icon on your desktop or put it on the
launchpad. But you'll have to tell your 'sub-users' to click it whenever they
wish to use the pc.
FamShell's buttons are configurable...
The top row of items on the configuration panel allows the following:
1. Registration - If you have registered type your password into the entry
field and press OK.
2. Enable access to drive a - Press this button to let your users access the
floppy drive. You may wish to provide this or other features at a later date -
no problem, you can always re-run Makefs.exe and add options.
3. CD access - Enter the drive letter of your CD drive and press CD.
The next row has two items:
1. Search for filenames - Evokes the PM search tool, if you need to find a
path or filename during the configuration procedure.
2. Access to games folder - If you keep your games in a folder of their own
and wish to provide access to it, enter the path and folder name and press OK.
The third row allows you to view the readme file and specify users for
FamShell.
Enter New User's name or an alias - just one word, please. Then press ADD. Do
this as many times as neccessary to include everyone you wish to incorporate.
Additions can be made by re-running the configuration program at a later date.
The bottom row of buttons and entry fields is for programs:
Press ADD and a number will appear in the appropriate box. This specifies the
button automatically assigned to the program. Now give the application you wish
to add a title (i.e. 'Phonebook'). Finally, enter it's full path and filename
(not forgetting the extension to assign all the configurable program buttons.
Press Done when you've finished configuring FamShell.
If you don't wish to specify all eight applications yet, you may add some
later. Just one snag: once you've defined all eight, you cannot make any
changes without a) deleting the file named 'fsconfig' in the FamShell folder
(and recompiling it using this panel), or b) editing the file manually. But
this is actually very easy. You'll recognize that the fsconfig file has two
lines for each app:
nam1 = ddd (where 1 is a number from 1 to 8 and ddd the title) and app1 =
xxxx.exe (where 1 is a number from 1 to 8, xxx the path and filename)
Don't forget the spaces before and after the '=' when making changes.
A word of warning...
This program is not intended as a foolproof safety system. It doesn't keep
your kids out of newsgroups etc., if they already know their way around with a
computer. Rather, it was designed for well-meaning people, who wish to use your
pc without messing things up. The deal is that they stay off your Workplace
Shell voluntarily and you provide them with a means of using your machine for
their own purposes.
And finally...
FamShell is shareware. If you register, you'll get a password and never again
see the sticky windows evoked when you start the program. Your password will
work with any updates upto a full version number (which would be 2.0 at the
present moment, as this is version 1.1). See the readme file for details.
