  3. IBM OS/2 Feature Install Version 1.2.1 Package README
  4. ________________________________________________________________

  6. The IBM OS/2 Feature Install Version 1.2.1 package provides the
  7. latest version of Feature Install (FI) and the Netscape Navigator
  8. plug-ins used for IBM Software Choice feature installations.

  11. FEATURE INSTALL VERSION 1.2 ENHANCEMENTS
  12. ________________________________________
  13.  
  14. Improvements have been incorporated into Feature Install Version 1.2.1
  15. to better support safe and reliable installations of new Software
  16. Choice features.  Feature Install has also been enhanced to make it
  17. easier to identify installed features enabling IBM service personnel
  18. to support OS/2 systems after Software Choice features have been
  19. installed.  Feature Install Version 1.2.1 updates include the following:
  20.  
  21. o  The dependency checking capabilities of Feature Install have
  22.    been greatly improved.  When a Software Choice feature is installed,
  23.    Feature Install is able to accurately detect whether prerequisite
  24.    system components, fixes, or other Software Choice features
  25.    have been installed. The search logic in Feature Install is capable
  26.    of resolving conflicts and ambiguities that might arise when more
  27.    than one version of a system component that matches the dependencies
  28.    of a Software Choice feature is found on the target system.
  29.  
  30. o  The Feature Install Inventory of installed features is now stored
  31.    in an ASCII file that is readable and printable.  This file is
  32.    named FI.INI and is located in the os2\install directory on the
  33.    system boot drive.  Feature Install adds entries to the file
  34.    when features are installed and deletes them when they are removed.
  35.    The entries in this file appear in the order in which the features
  36.    were installed.  The new inventory file makes it easy to identify,
  37.    control, and service the changes that Software Choice features
  38.    make to an OS/2 system.  The inventory is maintained as a read-only
  39.    file and should not be modified without assistance from IBM
  40.    service personnel.

  42. o  The installation support has been enhanced in Feature Install
  43.    Version 1.2.1 to enable Software Choice features to update previously
  44.    installed system components when a feature is installed.
  45.    Appropriate file version checks are made when a system module is
  46.    installed with a Software Choice feature, which results in an
  47.    installation that is safe and consistent with the service policy
  48.    supported by other OS/2 maintenance tools.

  50. o  The installation of "locked" system files are handled by a Feature
  51.    Install locked-file device driver.  This enhancement to locked-file
  52.    support ensures that if a Software Choice feature includes a
  53.    collection of system modules, they can be installed as a unit.
  54.    They are either all installed or none are installed to prevent
  55.    installation failures.

  57. o  An "archive" version is kept of any system modules that are updated
  58.    when Software Choice features are installed.  The Feature Install
  59.    Inventory and its backup and archive directories contain all the
  60.    information and data required so that when a feature is removed,
  61.    the system can be efficiently restored to the state it was in
  62.    before the feature was installed.  The information is structured
  63.    so that Feature Install can restore the "archived" versions when
  64.    Software Choice features are removed from the system.  The support
  65.    for the removal of features maintains system integrity even when
  66.    Software Choice features that update system modules are removed in
  67.    a different order than the order in which they were installed.

  69. o  A new version of the Corrective Service Facility will be included
  70.    with future FixPaks that will integrate Feature Install "archive"
  71.    versions of system modules into the archive and backup databases
  72.    that the Corrective Service Facility maintains whenever an OS/2
  73.    FixPak is installed.  The new version of the corrective Service
  74.    Facility will be enabled to read the Feature Install Inventory
  75.    and warn the user when the backout of a FixPak might remove
  76.    dependencies of one or more Software Choice features and affect
  77.    their operation.

  80. REQUIREMENTS

  83. If you have installed a previous version of the FI Toolkit on your
  84. system, uninstall the Toolkit, delete any objects you might have
  85. created with the FI Toolkit, and shut down and restart your system
  86. before installing the Feature Install Version 1.2.1 package.
  87.  
  88. Netscape Navigator for OS/2 is required to use Feature Install and
  89. to install IBM Software Choice features. If you do not have
  90. Navigator installed on your system and you are installing the FI
  91. package using the FIRUN_NS.ZIP file, Navigator will be installed
  92. automatically when you install Feature Install. Navigator is also
  93. available at http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp.

  96. DIRECTORY STRUCTURE

  99. The recommended directory structure for features downloaded from
  100. the IBM Software Choice Web site is as follows:
  101.  
  102. First create a top directory with any name you choose; for example,
  103. FEATURES. Create a subdirectory named FISETUP. The FISETUP
  104. subdirectory is where you should place the Feature Install package.
  105. Create a subdirectory for each feature you download to install. For
  106. example:
  107.  
  108.   \FEATURES
  109.     ├─\FISETUP
  110.     ├─\FEATURE1
  111.     └─\FEATURE2

  116. NOTE: Feature Install provides prerequisite checking. If the
  117.       directory structure described above is maintained and the
  118.       required files are not found on the client system, Feature
  119.       Install will automatically update the system with the
  120.       required files. If you do not use this directory structure
  121.       and the required files are not found on the client system,
  122.       the client will be prompted for the location of the files
  123.       when installing an IBM Software Choice feature.

  126. INSTALLING THE FEATURE INSTALL PACKAGE
  127. ______________________________________

  129. To install the Feature Install package, do the following:
  130.  
  131. 1.  Change to the subdirectory containing FIRUNPKG.ZIP or
  132.     FIRUN_NS.ZIP, whichever Feature Install package you are using.
  133.     (The Feature Install package should be located in the FISETUP
  134.     subdirectory.)
  135.  
  136. 2.  Use PKUNZIP2.EXE (typically located in the \IBMCOM directory)
  137.     to unzip the files. Type PKUNZIP2 FIRUNPKG or
  138.     PKUNZIP2 -d FIRUN_NS depending on which package you
  139.     are using.
  140.  
  141.     NOTE:  Use the -d option if you are using the Navigator
  142.            package (FIRUN_NS.ZIP).
  143.  
  144.     When the program finishes, you are ready to install the
  145.     Feature Install package.
  146.  
  147. 3.  In the directory where you unzipped the Feature Install
  148.     package, type FISETUP.
  149.  
  150.     FISETUP can be run with or without the parameters listed below.
  151.     For a CID installation, specify any of the parameters.
  152.  
  153.  
  154. /L1:     Drive, path, and file name of the log file. If you do not
  155.          specify a log file, a default log file named FISETUP.LOG
  156.          will be created in the root of your boot drive.
  157.  
  158. /B:      Drive letter of the boot drive (for example, C:)
  159.          If a boot drive is not specified, it will be detected
  160.          automatically.
  161.  
  162. /S:      Source path, including drive letter, where Feature
  163.          Install and the FI plug-ins are located. The source path
  164.          does not have to be specified if these files are located
  165.          in the same directory as the FISETUP executable.
  166.  
  167. /NN      Do not install the FI plug-ins and do not check if
  168.          Netscape Navigator for OS/2 is installed.
  169.  
  170. /H or /? View the available parameters and their function.
  171.  
  172. /U       Update installation software even if the version is older
  173.          than the existing version.
  174.  
  175. Example:  fisetup /S:C: /L1:C:\err.log /U /NN
  176.

  178. 4.  When the program finishes, it might prompt you to reboot your
  179.     system.  If so, shut down and restart your system.
  180.  
  181. KNOWN PROBLEMS
  182. ______________
  183.  
  184. Under very rare circumstances, Feature Install can hold "in-use" files
  185. indefinitely (it typically closes them when an installation or
  186. uninstallation completes).  These files include
  187. x:\os2\install\fi.ini, x:\os2\install\fi.bak,
  188. x:\os2\install\wpinstal.log, x:\os2\install\current.log,
  189. x:\os2\install\ibmlanlk.lst, x:\config.sys, as well as any files that
  190. were updated by a particular installation or uninstallation.
  191.  
  192. If you encounter this problem, reboot the system and the files will
  193. be unlocked automatically. (Or, on systems that are configured to allow
  194. it, quit and restart the Workplace Shell).
  195.  
  196. Because this happens only in rare circumstances, you should have a
  197. technician inspect the system integrity.  In particular, the last
  198. installation or uninstallation might not have completed correctly.
