  7. CDTest was written to check for the CMD PCIO640B and  PC-Tech RZ-1000
  8. EIDE controller flaws commonly found on PCI motherboards with Mercury
  9. and Neptune chipsets. It does not check for the flaw directly. Rather
  10. it does a high level test, ensuring that what is repeatedly read from
  11. a CD-ROM drive is the same each time.

  17. flaw.

  28. HOW TO USE

  30. Under DESQview, Windows, Windows For WorkGroups , NT or OS/2
  31. emulation, all under DOS emulation and run the program:

  33.      CD  E:
  34.  
  35. where E is your CD-ROM drive.  You will need to insert any data CD-ROM
  36. for the test.
  37.  
  38. Just follow the instructions on the screen. In phase 2 of the test,
  39. you will need to run other programs to generate potentially
  40. interfering simultaneous I/O activity while the test is running.

  43. INTERPRETING TEST RESULTS
  44.  
  45. If the test passes, you probably donÆt have the flaw. Sometimes the
  46. flaw does not manifest immediately. You might have to run the test for
  47. many hours in the background for the problem to show up. Running the
  48. test under pure DOS does not prove much since it is almost impossible
  49. to generate background interfering I/O activity.

  51. If the test fails, it means you your CDROM is not working
  52. properly. It does not diagnose why. If you have a PCI
  53. motherboard with a Mercury or Neptune chipset, the odds
  54. are that the PC-Tech RZ-1000 or the CMD PCIO640B is the
  55. cause of the trouble. However, overheating, other
  56. unrelated hardware failures or design flaws, or software
  57. bugs can also cause you hard disk to make errors.

  62. CDTest, C++ source and executable may be freely copied and used for
  63. any purpose except military. Unlike many of the other Canadian Mind
  64. Products utilities, it is free, not shareware. You are also free to
  65. port the code to other operating systems so long as you leave the
  66. copyright banner intact.
