ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Critical File Monitor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Critical File Monitor service enables you to be warned whenever critical
system files on the systems in your network are deleted or altered. The
Critical File Monitor service makes it simple for you to generate Netfinity
alerts when an important System File (such as the CONFIG.SYS file) changes
date, time, size, or is deleted (when it was present previously) or created
(when it was not present previously). The Critical File Monitor can also be
used to monitor any other files that reside on a Netfinity system as well.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. System Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The system files that can be monitored by the Critical File Monitor are
operating system-specific. The name of the operating system that is in use by
the system that you are accessing appears in the title area of the System Files
field group. The names of the monitorable system files appear beside the
checkboxes. For a list of the system files that will appear in the System
Files field group, select the specific operating system, below:
o OS/2 System Files
o Windows 3.1, 95, and NT System Files
o NetWare System Files
To monitor one or more System Files:
1. Select the system files that you want to monitor.
Check the checkboxes beside the names of the system files that you want
to monitor.
2. Select a Severity.
Each system file in the System File field group has a Severity field
beside its name. Use the spin buttons to select a Severity value for
each of the system files that you want to monitor.
3. Select Save to save the Critical File Monitor settings.
To close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any changes, select
Cancel.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. OS/2 System Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The OS/2 System Files that will appear in the System File field group are:
o CONFIG.SYS
o STARTUP.CMD
o AUTOEXEC.BAT
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Windows System Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Windows System Files that will appear in the System File field group are:
o Windows 3.1 Systems:
- WIN.INI
- SYSTEM.INI
- CONFIG.SYS
- AUTOEXEC.BAT
o Windows 95 Systems:
- WIN.INI
- SYSTEM.INI
o Windows NT Systems:
- WIN.INI
- SYSTEM.INI
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. NetWare System Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The NetWare System Files that will appear in the System File field group are:
o AUTOEXEC.NCF
o STARTUP.NCF
o VOL$LOG.ERR
o SYS$LOG.ERR
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Severity ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the spin buttons to set the Severity of the Netfinity Alert that will be
generated by the Critical File Monitor if this System File is changed. You can
choose a severity value from 0 (most severe) to 7 (least severe).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Additional Monitored Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Critical File Monitor enables you to monitor any file on the Netfinity system
that you are accessing. The Additional Monitored Files field contains a list
of all other files that are currently being monitored.
To select a file to monitor:
1. Select (monitor an additional file) from the Additional Monitored Files
field.
This will open the Monitor window.
2. Use the Monitor window to select a file to be monitored, and to set a
Severity value for the alert that will be generated if the selected file
is altered or deleted.
3. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the selected file.
To close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any changes, select
Cancel.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Save ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Save to save any changes you've made and then close the Critical File
Monitor service.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Delete to remove any selected monitored files from the Additional
Monitored Files selection list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Cancel to close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any
changes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Monitor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Monitor window to select a file to be monitored by the Critical File
Monitor.
To monitor a file that currently exists on the system:
1. Select from the Drive list the drive letter that contains the file you
want to monitor.
2. Select from the Directory field the directory that contains the file you
want to monitor.
3. Select from the File list the name of the file that you want to monitor.
4. Use the spin buttons beside the Severity field to set the Severity of the
alert that will be generated if the selected file is altered or deleted.
5. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the selected file.
Critical File Monitor can also generate alerts when specified files are
created that were not present on the system previously. To configure the
Critical File Monitor to generate an alert in this case:
1. Type in the Monitor Filename field the fully qualified path and name of
the file that you want to monitor.
For example, if you want the Critical File Monitor to generate an alert
if a file named ERROR.LOG appears in the directory named PROGRAM on drive
letter D, you would first select drive D from the selection list, and
type in the Monitor Filename field
PROGRAM\ERROR.LOG
2. Use the spin buttons beside the Severity field to set the Severity of the
alert that will be generated if the file is created.
3. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the specified file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Monitor Filename ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Monitor Filename field contains the name of the selected file that will be
monitored. Also, you can use the Monitor Filename field to specify the fully
qualified path and name of a file that does not currently exist on the system.
In this case, the Critical File Monitor will generate an alert if the specified
file is created on the system.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Alert Severity ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the spin buttons to set the Severity of the Netfinity Alert that will be
generated by the Critical File Monitor if this file is altered, deleted, or
created. You can choose a severity value from 0 (most severe) to 7 (least
severe).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Drive ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select from the Drive list the drive letter that contains the file you want to
monitor.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select from the File list the name of the file that you want to monitor.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select from the Directory field the directory that contains the file you want
to monitor.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Monitor ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Monitor to create a Critical File Monitor for the specified Monitor
filename that will generate a Netfinity Alert with the specified Alert Severity
if the file is changed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Cancel to close the Monitor window without saving any information.
