Software Inventory enables you to quickly and easily scan any Netfinity system
for the presence of installed software products.  Its flexible scanning methods
enable you to search for specific products, types of products (for example,
word processors or graphics viewers), or to just compile a record af all
recognized software on a system.  Reports can be printed to a file, sent to
your printer, or exported to a Netfinity database.

Software Inventory comes complete with an extensive dictionary file with many
predefined software product definitions, so you can start keeping track of the
software installed on your networked systems right away.

Software Inventory is designed with a simple graphical interface that enables
you to add or edit product definitions quickly and easily.  Products can be
defined and identified by the presence of specified file names (including files
that are of a specified size or that were created on specific date, enabling
you to search for only specific versions of software) or by the presence of a
SYSLEVEL file.

Finally, Software Inventory is designed to work with other software
inventorying programs that may be installed on your networked systems.
Information about the software on your systems can be used to update a NetView
DM inventory, and you can import product definitions from an SPAudit
dictionary, a QSoft dictionary a NetView DM inventory file, or another Software
Inventory Dictionary.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Software Inventory Product Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

This window contains information about any software products discovered by the
Software Inventory service.  The information available about each product is
dependent on the product's definition in the currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file.  The information available for each product can
include:

 Product Name The name of the software product.

 Vendor Name The name of the manufacturer of the product.

 Version   Version number of the product.

 Revision  Revision number of the product.

 Location  The drive and directory where the product is installed.

 Description A brief description of the product.

Use the selections available from the Inventory pulldown menu to:

   o  Perform a Full Dictionary Search

   o  Perform a Selected Product Search

   o  Search for Product Types

   o  Print the currently displayed Software Inventory data to a file.

   o  Print the currently displayed Software Inventory data to a Printer.

   o  Update your NetView DM Inventory (NetView DM users only)

   o  Export the data to a Netfinity database

Use the selections available from the Dictionary pulldown menu to:

   o  Create a New Software Inventory dictionary file

Use the selections available from the Help pulldown menu to display:

      service

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Full Dictionary Search ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A Full Dictionary Search scans your system for any of the software products
that are contained in the currently loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.
This process can take several minutes to complete, depending on the number of
files on your system and the number of product definitions contained in the
currently loaded dictionary file.

To perform a Full Dictionary Search, select Full Dictionary Search from the
Inventory pulldown menu.  Software Inventory will then use the currently
selected Software Inventory Dictionary file to determine what software products
are installed on the system.

Select Cancel to halt this Full Dictionary Search.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Selected Product Search ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A Selected Product Search enables you to search for specified software products
only.  To perform a Selected Product Search:

   1. Select Selected Product Search from the Inventory pulldown menu.

      This will open the Selective Inventory window.

   2. Select from the Available Product Definitions field the names of the
      software products that you want to search for on the system.

   3. Select OK to initiate the Software Inventory search for the selected
      software products.

 Select Cancel at any time to close this window without initiating a search.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Available Product Definitions ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select from the Available Product Definitions field the names of any software
products that you want to search for on the system.

Select OK to initiate the Selected Product Search.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Cancel to close the Selective Inventory window without initiating a
Selective Product Search.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Print to File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Print to File to save all of the currently displayed Software Inventory
information to a file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Print to Printer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Print to Printer to send all of the currently displayed Software
Inventory information to a printer attached to your system.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Update NetView DM Inventory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Update NetView DM Inventory to update your NetView DM Inventory with all
product definitions in the Software Inventory dictionary file that contain
NetView DM-specific data. This function will be available only if NetView DM is
installed and running on the system.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Export to Database ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Export to Database to export all of the currently gathered Software
Inventory information to a Netfinity database.

To export the Software Inventory information to a Netfinity database:

   1. Select Export to Database.

      This opens the Database Entry Selection window.

   2. Select a database to export the data to from the Database Selection
      field.

   3. Select OK to export the data to the selected Netfinity Database.

 Select Cancel at any time to close the Export to Database window without
 exporting the Software Inventory data.

Use the Database Selection Window to select the database to which the Software
Inventory will export the data.

   1. Select a database to export the data to from the Database Selection
      field.

   2. Select OK to continue.

 Select Cancel to close the Database Entry Selection window without saving any
 information.

Select the database to which the Software Inventory data will be exported.

To perform a Search by Product Type:

   1. Select Search by Product Type from the Inventory pulldown menu.

      This opens the Search by Product Type window.

   2. Select from the Product Type list one or more product types.

   3. Select OK to initiate your search.

 Select Cancel at any time to close this window without initiating a search.

Select Update Application Keywords to save a new set of application keywords
based on the applications which have been discovered. For each application
which was found and has an application keyword defined, a keyword $APP:keyword
will be defined.  Each application not found and which has an application
keyword will result in a keyword $APP:keyword being removed.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Update Saved Inventory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Update Saved Inventory to save the current inventory on the client
system.  This copy of the inventory is used by DMI instrumentation and other
client tools.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Creating a New Software Inventory Dictionary File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To create a new Software Inventory dictionary file:

   1. Select New... from the Dictionary pulldown menu.

      This opens the New Dictionary... window.

   2. Type in the Save as filename field the name for the new Software
      Inventory dictionary file.

   3. Select a Drive and Directory where the new dictionary file will be
      stored.

   4. Select OK to create the new dictionary file.

 Select Cancel to close the New Dictionary... window without creating a new
 dictionary file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Opening a Software Inventory Dictionary File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

To open a Software Inventory dictionary file:

   1. Select Open... from the Dictionary pulldown menu.

      This opens the Open Existing Dictionary... window.

   2. Type in the Open filename field the fully qualified path and file name of
      the dictionary file that you want to open, or select the Drive and
      Directory that contain the dictionary file, and then select the
      dictionary file from the File field.

   3. Select OK.

 Select Cancel to close this window without opening an existing dictionary
 file.

To edit the currently loaded Software Inventory dictionary file, select Edit...
from the Dictionary pulldown menu.

This opens the Edit Dictionary window.  From this window, you can:

   o  Change the dictionary's Description

   o  Add a Product Definition

   o  Edit a Product Definition

   o  Delete a Product Definition

Type in the Description field a brief description of the contents of the
currently loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.

The Product Definition field contains a list of all software products
recognized by the currently loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.  Each
entry in this list can be edited to change the criteria by which the product
will be recognized during the Software Inventory search process.

Select Add to add a new Product Definition to the currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file.

Software Inventory enables you to import QSoft software product definition
files, incorporating them into the currently loaded Software Inventory
dictionary file.

To import data from a QSoft dictionary:

   1. Select Import from QSoft Dictionary... from the Dictionary pulldown menu.

      This opens the Import QSoft Dictionary window.

   2. Type in the Open filename field the fully qualified path and file name of
      the QSoft dictionary file that you want to import, or select the Drive
      and Directory that contain the QSoft dictionary file, and then select the
      QSoft dictionary file from the File field.

   3. Select OK to import the selected QSoft dictionary.

 Select Cancel to close this window without importing a QSoft dictionary file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Import from NetView DM Inventory List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Software Inventory enables you to import NetView DM inventory lists,
incorporating them into the currently loaded Software Inventory dictionary
file.

To import data from a NetView DM inventory list:

   1. Select Import from NetView DM Inventory List... from the Dictionary
      pulldown menu.

      This opens the Import NetView DM Inventory List window.

   2. Type in the Open filename field the fully qualified path and file name of
      the NetView DM inventory list that you want to import, or select the
      Drive and Directory that contain the NetView DM inventory list, and then
      select the NetView DM inventory list from the File field.

   3. Select OK to import the selected NetView DM inventory list.

 Select Cancel to close this window without importing a NetView DM inventory
 list.

Software Inventory enables you to import product definitions from Software
Inventory Dictionary files, incorporating them into the currently loaded
Software Inventory dictionary file.

To import data from a Software Inventory dictionary:

   1. Select Import from Software Inventory Dictionary... from the Dictionary
      pulldown menu.

      This opens the Import Software Inventory Dictionary window.

   2. Type in the Open filename field the fully qualified path and file name of
      the Software Inventory dictionary file that you want to import, or select
      the Drive and Directory that contain the Software Inventory dictionary
      file, and then select the Software Inventory dictionary file from the
      File field.

   3. Select OK to import the selected Software Inventory dictionary.

 Select Cancel to close this window without importing a Software Inventory
 dictionary file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 41. Importing Information from SPAudit Dictionaries ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Software Inventory enables you to import product definitions from SPAudit
Dictionary files, incorporating them into the currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file.  SPAudit is a freeware package created by the
Software Publishers Association, which includes a large dictionary of
applications.  This package can be obtained through the World Wide Web by
accessing the SPA's web page (http://www.spa.org/).

To import data from a SPAudit dictionary:

   1. Select Import from SPAudit Dictionary... from the Dictionary pulldown
      menu.

      This opens the Import SPAudit Dictionary window.

   2. Type in the Open filename field the fully qualified path and file name of
      the SPAudit dictionary file that you want to import, or select the Drive
      and Directory that contain the SPAudit dictionary file, and then select
      the SPAudit dictionary file from the File field.

   3. Select OK to import the selected SPAudit dictionary. Typically, an
      SPAudit dictionary is a file named SPAUDIT.TXT.

 Select Cancel to close this window without importing a SPAudit dictionary
 file.

Type the name of the file you want to save in the Save as filename field.

   1. Select the product from the Product Definitions field.

   4. Select Save to save your changes to the Product Definition.

Select Add to add a new product definition to the currently loaded Software
Inventory definition file.  Product definitions can be added based on either of
two criteria:

   o  Product defined by one or more required files

   o  Product defined by SYSLEVEL file

Select the method by which the new product will be identified by Software
Inventory:

   o  Product defined by one or more required files

   o  Product defined by SYSLEVEL file

 Select OK to continue.

Select Product defined by one or more required files to configure a Software
Inventory product definition that will determine whether a product is installed
on a system by checking for one or more files of your choosing.  In addition to
the name of the file or files that Software Inventory will search for, you can
specify minimum (or maximum) file size and exact date or date ranges for the
file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 56. Product defined by SYSLEVEL file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Product defined by SYSLEVEL file to configure a Software Inventory
product definition that will determine whether a product is installed on a
system by checking for a specified SYSLEVEL file.  In addition to the name of
the SYSLEVEL file, you can specify a SysID Value or Component ID.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 57. Add File List Product Definition ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A file list product definition enables Software Inventory to search your
system's drives for specific files that are found in specific products.  If the
specified files are found, then the Software Inventory service will report that
the software package that contains the specified files is installed on the
system.

To add a file list product definition to the currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file:

   1. Select Edit

   2. Select Add from the Edit Dictionary window.

   3. Select Product defined by one or more required files from the New Product
      Definition Type window, and then select OK to open the Add File List
      Product Definition window.

   4. Fill in the product data fields and select a Product Type. This
      information will appear in the Software Inventory window and in any
      reports Software Inventory generates when the product is found during a
      search.  The product data fields include:

        o  Product Name
        o  Vendor Name
        o  Description
        o  Product Type
        o  Version
        o  Revision
        o  NVDM Change Object (NetView DM users only)
        o  NVDM Location Token (NetView DM users only)
        o  Application Keyword

      Note:   Although you do not need to fill in all of these fields, you
      should fill in as many as possible in order to maximize the information
      available to you when a product is found by the Software Inventory
      service.

   5. Specify the Matching Attributes

      Matching Attributes are the data items used by the Software Inventory
      service in order to detect whether the software product you are defining
      is installed on a system.  Because you are creating a File List Product
      Definition, the Matching Attributes for this product definition will be
      one (or more) specified files.  You can Add, Edit, or Delete files from
      the Matching Attributes field.

      To add a file:

        o  If you have the product that you are defining on your system:

             a) Select Use Files.

             b) Select the Drive and Directory where the files that Software
                Inventory will search for are located.  Then, select a File and
                select OK.

                This will add the selected file to the Matching Attributes
                field, and then reopen the Use File for Matching File window to
                enable you to add other files from this directory.  When you
                have finished adding files, select Cancel.

             c) Optional:  If you want Software Manager to look for files that
                are a specified size or within a range of sizes, or that were
                created on a specific day or during a specific date range,
                select the file from the Matching Attributes field and then
                select Edit to open the Edit Matching File window.  Specify the
                File Size and File Date information, and then select Save to
                continue.

             d) Select Create to save this Product Definition to the currently
                loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.

        o  If you do not have the product that you are defining on your system:

             a) Select Add to open the Add Matching File window.

             b) Type in the File Name, File Size data (optional), and File Date
                data (optional).

             c) Select Save to add this file to the Matching Attributes list.

                Repeat this process until you have added as many Matching
                Attributes as you want.

             d) Select Create to save this Product Definition to the currently
                loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 58. Product defined by SYSLEVEL file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

A SYSLEVEL file product definition enables Software Inventory to search your
system's drives for a specific SYSLEVEL files that is found in a specific
product.  If the specified SYSLEVEL file is found, then the Software Inventory
service will report that the software package that contains the specified
SYSLEVEL is installed on the system.

To add a file list product definition to the currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file:

   1. Select Edit

   2. Select Add from the Edit Dictionary window.

   3. Select Product defined by SYSLEVEL file from the New Product Definition
      Type window, and then select OK to open the Add SYSLEVEL Product
      Definition window.

   4. Fill in the product data fields and select a Product Type. This
      information will appear in the Software Inventory window and in any
      reports Software Inventory generates when the product is found during a
      search.  The product data fields include:

        o  Product Name
        o  Vendor Name
        o  Description
        o  Product Type
        o  NVDM Change Object (NetView DM users only)
        o  NVDM Location Token (NetView DM users only)
        o  Application Keyword

      Note:   Although you do not need to fill in all of these fields, you
      should fill in as many as possible in order to maximize the information
      available to you when a product is found by the Software Inventory
      service.

   5. Specify the Matching Attributes

      Matching Attributes are the data items used by the Software Inventory
      service in order to detect whether the software product you are defining
      is installed on a system.  Because you are creating a SYSLEVEL File
      Product Definition, the Matching Attributes will be the SYSLEVEL file
      name, the SysID, and the Component ID.

      To add Matching Attributes for a SYSLEVEL file:

        o  If you have the SYSLEVEL file for the product you are defining on
           your system:

             a) Select Use File.

             b) Select the Drive and Directory where the SYSLEVEL file is
                located, select the SYSLEVEL File and then select OK.

             c) Select Create to save this Product Definition to the currently
                loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.

        o  If you do not have the SYSLEVEL for the product you are defining on
           your system:

             a) Type in the File Name field the three character file name
                extension for the product's SYSLEVEL file.

             b) If possible, type in the SysID Value and the Component ID.

                Note:   These values are stored in the SYSLEVEL file, and can
                be difficult to obtain without the SYSLEVEL file itself.

             c) Select Create to save this Product Definition to the currently
                loaded Software Inventory dictionary file.

Type in the Product Name field the name of the software product that you are
defining.

Type in the Version field the version number of the software product that you
are defining.

Type in the Revision field the revision number of the software product that you
are defining.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 65. NVDM Change Object ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the NVDM Change Object field the NetView Distribution Manager
identification string for use with the software product you are defining.

Note:   This data is used only for the Update NetView DM Inventory function.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 66. NVDM Location Token ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the NVDM Location Token field the NetView Distribution Manager location
token string for use with the software product you are defining.

Note:   This data is used only for the Update NetView DM Inventory function.

documentation.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 67. Application Keyword ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the Application Keyword field the keyword to associate with the
application.  If the application is found on a system, the keyword $APP:keyword
will be assigned to the client system when the Update Application Keywords
option is selected.  If the application is not found, the keyword $APP:keyword
will be removed from the client system when the Update Application Keywords
option is selected.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 68. Matching Attributes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

The Matching Attributes field shows the list of all currently specified files
that will be used by Software Inventory to identify this software product.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 69. Add ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Add to select additional files to be used as matching attributes for
this Product Definition.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 70. Edit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Edit to change settings (file name, file date, or file size) used for
the currently selected Matching Attribute.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 71. Delete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Delete to remove the currently selected Matching Attribute from the
list.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 72. Create ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Create to save the Product Definition to currently loaded Software
Inventory dictionary file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 73. Cancel ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Cancel to close this window without saving any changes.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 74. Use Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Use Files to open the Use File for Matching File window.  From this
window, you can select specific files from your system that will then be
automatically added to the list of Matching Attributes.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 75. File Name (SYSLEVEL Extension) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the File Name field the three character SYSLEVEL file extension.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 76. SysID Value ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the SysID Value field the 16-bit hexadecimal product code contained in
the product's SYSLEVEL file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 77. Component ID ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the Component ID the Component ID value contained in the product's
SYSLEVEL file.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 78. Edit Matching File Window ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

If you want Software Manager to look for files that are a specified size or
within a range of sizes, or that were created on a specific day or during a
specific date range, select the file from the Matching Attributes field and
then select Edit to open the Edit Matching File window.  Specify the File Size
and File Date information, and then select Save to continue.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 79. File Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Type in the File Name field the name of the file that will be used as a
Matching Attribute.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 80. File Size Settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the File Size fields to specify an exact file size for the matching file,
or a minimum and maximum file size range.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 81. File Date Settings ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Use the File Date fields to specify an exact file creation date for the
matching file, or a range of dates during which the file could have been
created.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 82. Use File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

Select Use File to open the Use SYSLEVEL File... window.  From this window, you
can select a specific SYSLEVEL file from your system.  Once selected, all data
from the SYSLEVEL file will be added to the appropriate fields in the Add
SYSLEVEL Product Definition window.


ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 83. Keys Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

When two key names are joined by a plus sign (+), use these two keys together.
Hold down the first key and press the second.

 Alt+Esc
    Switch to the next open window, full-screen session, or icon that is
    minimized on the desktop.

 Alt+Shift+Tab
    Make the desktop window active.

 Alt+F4
    Close the local window.

 Alt+F7
    Enable you to move the active window to a different location.

 Alt+F9
    Remove from the screen the active window and all windows associated with
    it. The windows are hidden or minimized, depending on how the program was
    written.

 Ctrl+Alt+Del
    Restart the operating system on the local system.

 Ctrl+Esc
    Display the Window List on the local system.

 Print Screen
    Print the contents of the remote window to the default local printer.
