  2. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Software Inventory Task-Specific Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  4. Use this action to create a scheduled event that will gather data about 
  5. software installed on one or more remote systems.  Once collected, this 
  6. information can be exported to a database, saved to a database file, or used to 
  7. generate a variety of reports. 
  8.  
  9. To continue configuring your Software Inventory scheduled event: 
  10.  
  11.    1. Type in the Dictionary File Name the name of the Software Inventory 
  12.       dictionary file that will be used to determine the presence of software 
  13.       products on each of the remote systems. 
  14.  
  15.    2. Select one or more Output Options: 
  16.  
  17.       You can select up to six Output Options: 
  18.  
  19.         o  Export to Database 
  20.         o  Generate System Reports 
  21.         o  Generate Summary Report by Product Name 
  22.         o  Generate Summary Report by Product Version 
  23.         o  Generate Summary Report by Product Revision 
  24.         o  Update NetView DM Inventory 
  25.  
  26.    3. Select OK to continuing scheduling this action.

  28.  Select Cancel to close this window without saving any selections.

  31. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Dictionary File Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  33. Type in the Dictionary File Name the name of the Software Inventory dictionary 
  34. file that will be used to determine the presence of software products on the 
  35. remote systems.

  38. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Export to Database ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  40. To export Software inventory data to a database or database file: 
  41.  
  42.    1. Select Export to Database and then select OK. 
  43.  
  44.       Note:   You can select other Output Options as well.  The following steps 
  45.               will not need to be completed until you have selected OK 
  46.  
  47.    2. Select from the Database Entry Selection field the type of database data 
  48.       export you want to perform. 
  49.  
  50.       This scheduled event enables you to handle the collected Software 
  51.       Inventory data in one of two ways. 
  52.  
  53.         o  Export Information to a File 
  54.  
  55.            Select this option to export the information into a file that can 
  56.            later be used to append the Software Inventory data to an existing 
  57.            Netfinity database. 
  58.  
  59.            If you select Export Information to a File: 
  60.              a) Select OK to open the Save as File window. 
  61.  
  62.              b) Select a drive and directory where the file will be saved, and 
  63.                 then type in the Save as file name filed the name of the file 
  64.                 that will be created. 
  65.         o  Export Information to a Database 
  66.  
  67.            Select this option to export the information directly to a Netfinity 
  68.            database to which the managing system is attached. 
  69.  
  70.            Note:   This option will not appear if the managing system is not 
  71.                    attached to or configured to use a supported database 
  72.                    system.

  74.            If you select Export Information to a Database: 
  75.              a) Select OK to open the Database Selection window. 
  76.  
  77.              b) Select the database to which the Software Inventory data will 
  78.                 be exported. 
  79.  
  80.    3. Select OK to save this information and continue configuring the scheduled 
  81.       event.

  84. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Generate System Reports ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  86. Select this option to create a report of all software products detected on each 
  87. remote system is a selected directory on your local system. 
  88.  
  89. To generate a Software Inventory report for each system: 
  90.  
  91.    1. Select Generate System Reports. 
  92.  
  93.    2. Type in the Report Directory field the fully qualified path of the 
  94.       directory on the managing system that the system reports will be saved 
  95.       to. 
  96.  
  97.       Note:   The report for each system from which information is gathered 
  98.               will have a different and distinct file name.  This file name is 
  99.               generated by taking the first four letters of the system's System 
  100.               Name and then applying a mathematical algorithm to the entire 
  101.               System Name to generate a four digit alphanumeric string.  These 
  102.               two parts are then combined to create the file name. 
  103.  
  104.       For example, a report file created by a Generate System Reports scheduled 
  105.       event for a system named USER1 will always be named USER11BN.RPT.  This 
  106.       ensures that similarly named systems will not generate identically named 
  107.       reports, and that each system will generate the same report name each 
  108.       time the scheduled event is executed.

  111. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Generate Summary Report by Product Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  113. Select Generate Summary Report by Product Name to create a report that contains 
  114. a summary of all software products found on all selected remote systems.  This 
  115. report will feature information on all distinct Product Names that are found by 
  116. Software Inventory.

  118. To Generate a Summary Report by Product Name: 
  119.  
  120.    1. Select Generate a Summary Report by Product Name. 
  121.  
  122.    2. Type in the Report File field the name of the report file that will be 
  123.       created.

  128. Select Generate Summary Report by Product Version to create a report that 
  129. contains a summary of all software products found on all selected remote 
  130. systems.  This report will feature information on all distinct Product Versions 
  131. of distinct Product Names that are found by Software Inventory.

  133. To Generate a Summary Report by Product Version:

  135.    1. Select Generate a Summary Report by Product Version. 
  136.  
  137.    2. Type in the Report File field the name of the report file that will be 
  138.       created.

  143. Select Generate Summary Report by Product Revision to create a report that 
  144. contains a summary of all software products found on all selected remote 
  145. systems.  This report will feature information on all distinct Revisions of 
  146. distinct Versions of distinct Product Names that are found by Software 
  147. Inventory.

  149. To Generate a Summary Report by Product Revision: 
  150.  
  151.    1. Select Generate a Summary Report by Product Revision. 
  152.  
  153.    2. Type in the Report File field the name of the report file that will be 
  154.       created.

  157. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Update NetView DM Inventory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  158.  
  159. Select Update NetView DM Inventory to update the NetView DM inventory files of 
  160. any selected remote system that is running NetView DM.  If the remote system is 
  161. running NetView DM, any NVDM-specific entries in the currently loaded Software 
  162. inventory dictionary file will be automatically appended to the remote system's 
  163. NVDM inventory list.
