  4. The Critical File Monitor service enables you to be warned whenever critical 
  5. system files on the systems in your network are deleted or altered.  The 
  6. Critical File Monitor service makes it simple for you to generate Netfinity 
  7. alerts when an important System File (such as the CONFIG.SYS file) changes 
  8. date, time, size, or is deleted (when it was present previously) or created 
  9. (when it was not present previously).  The Critical File Monitor can also be 
  10. used to monitor any other files that reside on a Netfinity system as well.

  19. The system files that can be monitored by the Critical File Monitor are 
  20. operating system-specific. The name of the operating system that is in use by 
  21. the system that you are accessing appears in the title area of the System Files 
  22. field group.  The names of the monitorable system files appear beside the 
  23. checkboxes.  For a list of the system files that will appear in the System 
  24. Files field group, select the specific operating system, below: 
  25.  
  26.    o  OS/2 System Files 
  27.  
  28.    o  Windows 3.1, 95, and NT System Files 
  29.  
  30.    o  NetWare System Files 
  31.  
  32.  To monitor one or more System Files: 
  33.  
  34.    1. Select the system files that you want to monitor. 
  35.  
  36.       Check the checkboxes beside the names of the system files that you want 
  37.       to monitor. 
  38.  
  39.    2. Select a Severity. 
  40.  
  41.       Each system file in the System File field group has a Severity field 
  42.       beside its name.  Use the spin buttons to select a Severity value for 
  43.       each of the system files that you want to monitor.

  45.    3. Select Save to save the Critical File Monitor settings.

  47.  To close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any changes, select 
  48.  Cancel.

  104. Use the spin buttons to set the Severity of the Netfinity Alert that will be 
  105. generated by the Critical File Monitor if this System File is changed.  You can 
  106. choose a severity value from 0 (most severe) to 7 (least severe).

  109. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Additional Monitored Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  110.  
  111. Critical File Monitor enables you to monitor any file on the Netfinity system 
  112. that you are accessing.  The Additional Monitored Files field contains a list 
  113. of all other files that are currently being monitored.

  115. To select a file to monitor: 
  116.  
  117.    1. Select (monitor an additional file) from the Additional Monitored Files 
  118.       field. 
  119.  
  120.       This will open the Monitor window. 
  121.  
  122.    2. Use the Monitor window to select a file to be monitored, and to set a 
  123.       Severity value for the alert that will be generated if the selected file 
  124.       is altered or deleted. 
  125.  
  126.    3. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the selected file.

  128.  To close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any changes, select 
  129.  Cancel.

  134. Select Save to save any changes you've made and then close the Critical File 
  135. Monitor service.

  140. Select Delete to remove any selected monitored files from the Additional 
  141. Monitored Files selection list.

  146. Select Cancel to close the Critical File Monitor service without saving any 
  147. changes.

  152. Use the Monitor window to select a file to be monitored by the Critical File 
  153. Monitor.

  155. To monitor a file that currently exists on the system:

  157.    1. Select from the Drive list the drive letter that contains the file you 
  158.       want to monitor. 
  159.  
  160.    2. Select from the Directory field the directory that contains the file you 
  161.       want to monitor. 
  162.  
  163.    3. Select from the File list the name of the file that you want to monitor. 
  164.  
  165.    4. Use the spin buttons beside the Severity field to set the Severity of the 
  166.       alert that will be generated if the selected file is altered or deleted.

  168.    5. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the selected file. 
  169.  
  170.  Critical File Monitor can also generate alerts when specified files are 
  171.  created that were not present on the system previously.  To configure the 
  172.  Critical File Monitor to generate an alert in this case: 
  173.  
  174.    1. Type in the Monitor Filename field the fully qualified path and name of 
  175.       the file that you want to monitor. 
  176.  
  177.       For example, if you want the Critical File Monitor to generate an alert 
  178.       if a file named ERROR.LOG appears in the directory named PROGRAM on drive 
  179.       letter D, you would first select drive D from the  selection list, and 
  180.       type in the Monitor Filename field 
  181.  
  182.       PROGRAM\ERROR.LOG 
  183.  
  184.    2. Use the spin buttons beside the Severity field to set the Severity of the 
  185.       alert that will be generated if the file is created.

  187.    3. Select Monitor to initiate the monitoring process on the specified file.

  192. The Monitor Filename field contains the name of the selected file that will be 
  193. monitored.  Also, you can use the Monitor Filename field to specify the fully 
  194. qualified path and name of a file that does not currently exist on the system. 
  195. In this case, the Critical File Monitor will generate an alert if the specified 
  196. file is created on the system.

  201. Use the spin buttons to set the Severity of the Netfinity Alert that will be 
  202. generated by the Critical File Monitor if this file is altered, deleted, or 
  203. created.  You can choose a severity value from 0 (most severe) to 7 (least 
  204. severe).

  227. filename that will generate a Netfinity Alert with the specified Alert Severity
