ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. What is Deck Swabber? ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Davy Jones Software Locker (TM)
In association with the S.P.A. (Software Piracy Association).
"Mass copy that floppy!"
Deck Swabber fills the special needs of the software pirate. It allows such
noble, enterprising men and women to maintain their booty in an orderly
fashion. It facilitates rapid proliferation of low cost software.
Reminder Note:
Whenever you get a new computer, you have a choice to make concerning your
software.
You may setup your software on your new computer if you delete it from your old
computer.
OR
If you leave your software on your old computer, you need to pirate additional
software for your new computer.
Choose from the following list of menu features:
o Software
- Add Software
- Delete Software
- Change Software
- Pirate Software
- Exit
o Settings
- Colors
- Fonts
- Blanks
o Display
- Sort

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Add Software ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This option is used to add new booty to the software treasure chest. When
selected, the Software Data Entry window appears. Type in data about your new
"acquisition" into the appropriate fields. Select OK to add the software, or
select Cancel to abort.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Delete Software ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this option when the highlighted software is to be cast overboard. Your
noble crew will request confirmation of this. If you maintain your orders, the
highlighted software will "walk the plank", and be removed from the data base.

o Change Software
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Change Software ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This option allows the pirate to view and alter a specific software entry. It
may be selected via the Software menu, or by marking a software item in the
booty list and pressing enter
Choosing this option causes the Software Data Entry window to appear with the
current settings for the software item. All items, including the software
name, may be changed in this way. Press OK to save the changes, or Cancel to
discard changes.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Pirate Software ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
ARRGH!! 'tis the reason for the software! Select this option to initiate the
AutoPirate feature. If the software is contained on disks whose format lends
itself to piracy by the current machine, your devoted crew will automatically
pirate the software.
Deck Swabber asks how many copies of the software are to be made. This is not
done because of escalating software prices, but so that the process of reading
the master disk and writing multiple low cost target disks can be carried out
automatically. Deck Swabber will inform you how many and what disk types are
needed for the voyage.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Exit ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the voyage is over, select Exit to put into port. Any changes, such as
software cargo, window size and position, colors, and fonts, are automatically
saved.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Change Colors ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To make software piracy comfortable and soothing to the eye, Deck Swabber
supports user defined text colors. When selected, this feature displays a
series of colors from which the active foreground and background text colors
may be selected. The test box allows the user to see the colors in some
obnoxious sample text. The text color settings are saved automatically upon
exit.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Change Fonts ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
An patch on your eye and a parrot on your shoulder can make reading computer
screens difficult, unless large fonts can be used. Fortunately, Deck Swabber
caters to the most discriminating pirate by providing this feature. Selecting
this option from the main menu brings up a font dialog from which a screen font
may be selected. Alternatively, the font used in the Deck Swabber session may
be changed by dragging from a Font Palette.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 9. Blanks ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To fully support AutoPirate technology, Deck Swabber tracks blank disks. After
all, consider the lost opportunity if one had temporary access to a copy of
Windoze Not There only to realize that there were less than 200 disks available
with which to copy it! When AutoPirate is initiated, the pirate is given the
option to specify whether the necessary blank disks are removed from current
booty.
The purpose of this menu feature is to allow for changes in blank disk cargo
resulting from those rare non-piracy operations. Examples are copies of self
written software, copies of unrecorded software, or purchase of diskettes.
Selecting this feature brings up a window showing the current number of each
type of diskette. Spin buttons can be used to adjust these figures up or down.
See: Pirate Software
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Sort Display ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To make searching for software simple, Deck Swabber allows sorting of the
software booty list. When selected, Sort... displays a button index which asks
the user to select a sorting method. Setting the method and pressing OK causes
the display to be resorted according to the chosen method. The sort method is
saved upon program exit and will be used as the default until changed again
using Sort...
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Print ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select this command to produce hardcopy output of some or all of your software
cargo.
Note: This feature is not implemented on this version of Deck Swabber.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Description On/Off ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Description On/Off to Enable/Disable viewing the software description on
the bottom of the booty list. When enabled, the description window shows the
description of the currently marked software item.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Define Software Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Define Software Types to change the list of available software types
from which to choose. Each software item has an associated software type which
is displayed in the Software Booty Window. A default list is provided with
Deck Swabber. This menu option allows the pirate to change the default list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Define Disk Types ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Define Disk Types to change the list of available diskette types from
which to choose. A dialog box containing a list of current types is displayed.
Entries in the list may be changed, or deleted, and new entries may be made.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Define Piracy Classes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This feature allows the software pirate to alter the names of the piracy class
lists. Some midshipmen may opt not to make use of piracy classes, however,
they are an integral part of the Vienna Piracy Protocol and should be adopted
by all seaworthy computer operators.
Each captain may name and define piracy classes as seen fit. The names and
values have no impact on software performance other than for informational and
entertainment purposes.
The default piracy class list is a suggested list used by respected software
pirates world wide. They help maintain clean, high quality booty, and render
purchased software obsolete. Their definitions appear below.
o Admiral's Class
The finest in discount software! Admiral's class software is software on
original diskettes, obtained without licesing fee. Admiral's class software
can rarely be obtained consistently. Typical acquisition methods include
ordering replacement disks for unpurchased software, having someone buy dual
media software and getting the disks they don't use, etc.
o Captain's Class
Captain's class software is an exact, sector for sector duplicate of original
media. Captain's class software can be produced by making a sector for
sector copy of original, Admiral's class, or Captain's class software. The
bulk of quality, low-cost software is Captain's class, and is worthy to bear
the Davy Jones Software Locker seal of approval!
o Rental
This is an extension of Captain's class. It is physically identical to
Captain's class, but possesses the dubious distinction of having been
obtained via Software Rental. For simplicity, this class may be replaced by
Captain's class.
A software rental is when software is temporarily purchased, "archived", then
returned to the victim store for a prompt, courteous refund.
o First Officer Class
This class indicates that the software was downloaded from one of the many
noble discount software bulletin boards. First Officer Class software,
although downloaded, must be expanded so that it is in the same format as the
original media (ie. such as disk images). Downloaded software whose format
is not preserved is considered to be Cabin Boy Class software.
o Commander Class
This refers to software whose format has not been preserved, but is known to
be complete. An example is software extracted from a hard drive (only when
all software files are on the hard drive), or original disks copied to a
different medium.
o Lieutennant Class
Similar to Commander Class except that it is not known that all software
files have been copied. This is usually the result of copying software from
a hard drive, since few modern programs copy all files to the hard drive upon
installation.
o Cabin Boy Class
This class is reserved almost exclusively for software downloaded from
bulletin board systems whose original diskette format is not preserved. This
class of software has great potential for trojans, viruses, etc.
o Landlover Class
ARRGH! Such software can result in a court martial! This is a delicate
subject and difficult to talk about. It refers to software obtained through
legitimate purchase and payment of licensing fees. This type of software can
corrupt the noblest of hard drives, and must be kept to a strict minimum!
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Software Data Entry ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Software Data Entry window to enter and alter data for a particular
piece of software. Choose OK to save changes, or select Cancel to abort
changes.

o Run
o Protection
o Obsolete
o Software Type
o Disk Type
o Piracy Class
o Description
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Software Data Entry - Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Enter the name of the software into this field. The name should be exactly as
it would appear on original diskettes. Do not include the version number or
diskette specific labeling information in this field.
Note: It is good practice to keep this field as short as possible. The data
entered here appears in the Name column of the Software Booty Window.
This column adjusts its width to accomodate the widest entry.
Some software written for a particular operating system may be named
appropriately (ex. "Deck Swabber for OS/2"). It is often helpful to leave the
operating system identifier out of the name field to preserve space. The
operating system information is contained in the Native OS radio button index,
and is displayed in the Software Booty Window.

Select the media type on which the software is recorded. If identical software
exists on several media (ex. both 3╨╗" and 5╨╝" diskettes), multiple entries
should be made in Deck Swabber.
Alternatively, if a single piece of software exists on several media types (ie.
CD-ROM software with 3╨╗" boot diskettes), the disk type should be set to either
"unknown", or a nonwriteable disk format, such as CD-ROM. This is to prevent
AutoPirate from attempting to duplicate the software.
Note: Future versions of Deck Swabber may permit AutoPirate to duplicate mixed
media diskettes.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Software Data Entry - Obsolete ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If the software is obsolete, such as most Billiesoft products, check this box.
Note: It is important to use a consistent definition of "obsolete". The
Vienna Piracy Protocol recommends that software be marked as obsolete if
and only if a later version replacement exists in your booty.
Example: If you have a copy of Deck Swabber version 0.90, you would not mark it
as obsolete, even though Deck Swabber version 1.00 exists, until you had your
own copy of Deck Swabber version 1.00.

This check box is only used during a Change operation. When the name of a
software type is changed, the default action of Deck Swabber is to keep all
software of the previous type as the new type. If the new type is completely
different from the previous type, select the Remap check box. This causes all
software of this type to become of "unknown" type.
For example:
A software type is called "Programming Language", but you soon see that the
term "Programming Tool" is more general and better. Clearly in this case, you
would want all software previously known as "Programming Language" to be
maintained as "Programming Tool" type, so leave the Remap check box unchecked.
Alternately, if you decided to break up the type "Programming Language" into
individual types, such as "Basic", "C", and "Assembler", you might perform the
following steps:
1. Change the "Programming Language" type to "Basic". Check the Remap box so
that all software which was defined as "Programming Language" becomes
"unknown" and NOT "Basic".
2. Add "C" and "Assembler" to the software type list.
3. Save the changes using the OK button.
4. From the Software Booty Window, change the software types on the software
which was previously "Programming Language" to the proper values.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 48. Disk type list ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window lists the currently defined diskette types. Using the vertical
scroll bar, the entire list of diskette types may be viewed. The currently
highlighted type in this list will be deleted or changed when the Delete or
Change pushbuttons are used.
To highlight a specific diskette type, click on it with the mouse. Using the
keyboard, press tab until the list is active, then use the up/down arrow keys
to highlight the desired diskette type.
Note: It is a matter of personal taste whether different recording densities
be assigned different diskette types. For example, one pirate may
choose to define 3╨╗" disks to include 720k, 1.44 meg, and 2.88 meg
disks. Another pirate may choose to define three diskette types, 3╨╗"
DD, 3╨╗" HD, and 3╨╗" ED diskettes.
AutoPirate automatically detects disk density and does not care what the text
name of a diskette type is, only the source and destination drives are
important. However, for blank disk management, it is usually preferrable to use
separate names for different media densities.

any software contained on disks of this type, the software will be redefined as
being on "unknown" disk types. (Deleting a disk type does NOT delete all
software entries stored on that disk type.)

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 53. Remap to UNKNOWN ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This check box is only used during a Change operation. When the name of a disk
type is changed, the default action of Deck Swabber is to keep all software on
the previous disk type as being on the new type. If the new disk type is
completely different from the previous type, select the Remap check box. This
causes all software stored on this disk type to be recorded as being stored on
an "unknown" disk type.
For example:
A disk type is called 3.5", but you want to call it 3.5 inch In this case, you
would want all software stored on 3.5" to be maintained as being stored on 3.5
inch, so leave the Remap check box unchecked.
Alternately, if you decided to break up the type 3.5" type into individual
types, such as 720k, 1.44M, and 2.88M, you might perform the following steps:
1. Change the 3.5" type to 720k. Check the Remap box so that all disks which
were called 3.5" become "unknown" and NOT 720k.
2. Add 1.44M and 2.88M to the disk type list.
3. Save the changes using the OK button.
4. From the Software Booty Window, change the disk types on the software which
was previously stored on 3.5" to the proper values.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 58. Sort software ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window appears when Sort... is selected from the main menu. Use it to
define which of several predefined sorting algorithms should be used to display
the software data. This is useful for quickly finding a particular piece of
software based on certain criteria.
Select one of the five radio buttons to choose a sorting algorithm. Press OK
to resort the list, or press Cancel to leave the sorting algorithm unchanged.
Note: The selected sorting algorithm is automatically saved upon program exit,
so that it is implemented when Deck Swabber is started again.
For detailed description of each sort mode, select:
o Sort by Name
o Sort by Piracy Class
o Sort by Software Type
o Sort by Disk Type
o Sort by Operating System
Additional information:
o OK button
o Cancel button
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 59. Sort by Name ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This method causes the software to be sorted by the name of the software, in
ascending order. If two pieces have the same name, they are distinguished by
the version number.
If software has the same name and version, the sort is determined by other
factors, such as piracy class, software type, etc. This sort method is most
useful when attempting to look up a piece of software by name.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 60. Sort by Piracy Class ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This causes software to be sorted according to piracy class. The sorting is
NOT alphabetically based, but based on the order of piracy classes as defined,
with "unknown" being the first. This is so that the sort may be done on a
"software quality" basis, rather than the arbitrary alphabetical names of the
piracy classes.
Note: Since software piracy classes are sorted in this fashion, it is
important to define piracy classes in the "correct" order. The default
list which is optionally installed upon Deck Swabber's first run
accomplishes this.
Within a piracy class, software is then sorted by name, then version number.

Note: The color scheme which is in effect upon exiting Deck Swabber will be
used during the next session.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 67. Settings - Blanks ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To fully support AutoPirate technology, Deck Swabber tracks blank disks. This
window appears when Settings/Blanks is selected from the main menu. A list of
all defined disk types is shown, with a spin field indicating the number of
blank disks of this type.
The purpose of this feature is to allow for changes in blank disk cargo
resulting from those rare non-piracy operations. Examples are copies of self
written software, copies of unrecorded software, or purchase of diskettes.
To change the number of blank disks of a particular type:
1. Select the disk type in the Blank Disk Type List.
Note: The number in the spin field always reflects the number of blank
disks of the currently highlighted type.
2. Adjust the number in the Blank Disk Spin window.
3. When all changes are complete, select OK to accept changes, or Cancel to
abort.

disk type in the Blank Disk Type List window. The value in the spin field will
automatically adjust itself to the current value for the newly highlighted
diskette type.
Note: Since the blank disk tracking is used for AutoPirate, it is best to only
include disks worthy of using for copying (ie. don't include corrupted
disks). Similarly, non writeable disk types, such as CD-ROM, should be
allocated zero blank disks.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 72. Number of Copies ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This window appears after Pirate Software is selected from the main menu. The
software item currently marked in the Software Booty Window is chosen for the
piracy operation. Although DeckSwabber's patented AutoPirate technology can
determine the type of diskettes required, as well as the number of disks per
copy, only you, the software pirate, know exactly how many copies your crew
needs.
The spin button contains the number of requested copies, which defaults to one.
The adjacent window indicates the total number of diskettes required for the
defined piracy operation. DeckSwabber makes valuable use of your disk drive's
limited copying time by reading diskettes only once.

Yo-Ho-Ho! You've reached the most exciting window available in Deck Swabber,
the AutoPirate dialog. This window appears after selecting OK from the Number
of Copies window. At this stage, Deck Swabber has all data necessary to provide
low cost software reproduction.
The AutoPirate window is loaded with features designed to make your voyage
smooth and safe.
At Davy Jones Software Locker, we would never think of letting you sail the
unforgiving seas all alone, which is why Long John Silver accompanies you. As
he swabs the deck, he will prompt you for the correct diskettes.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 76. Long John Silver ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Ahoy maytees! I be Long John Silver, your humble crewman for the voyage. As
ye steer through gallant software reproduction, I guide ye in three ways.
1. Look for my verbal commands as we set sail.
2. The log book to the right holds a treasure chest of information about the
voyage. It shows important data, such as disk copying status and total
number of disks.
3. Best of all, I raise the Jolly Roger as value is added to each and every
disk!
To best use our piracy resources, original diskettes are read only once,
regardless of how many copies are made. For each disk, I'll prompt ye for the
original disk, followed by a number of low cost blanks.
When we cast off, I prompt ye to insert the first original disk. Two options
are presented on deck, Read and Cancel. If errors are encountered during the
read operation, a message will appear and request instructions. Otherwise, the
disk is read, during which I raise the Jolly Roger and display read status in
the Log Book.
After the original disk is read, I prompt ye to insert target disks, one for
each copy requested. As for a read, two options are presented, Write and
Cancel. For normal piracy, the target disks should be formatted prior to use.
If AutoPirate has trouble writing the target disks, it will ask if you wish to
format the disk. If you choose not to format the disk, you have the
opportunity to use a different disk, or cancel the piracy operation altogether.
Note: AutoPirate may suggest formatting the disk for reasons other than use of
an unformatted target disk. Possible reasons include a defective target
disk, a target disk formatted to a different density, or erroneous
specification of disk type in the Disk Type Definition window.
Once all target disks are written, the piracy cycle repeats until all original
disks are pirated onto all target disks. Upon successful voyage, I ask if ye
wish to deduct the target disks from the blank disk booty.

thoroughly embraced by Davy Jones Software Locker, provides an entertaining
indication of software piracy progress.
As a diskette is read, written, or formatted, the Jolly Roger ascends the
flagpole. When the Jolly Roger reaches the crow's nest, the diskette operation
is complete.

Press the Read button from the AutoPirate dialog when Long John Silver prompts
you to insert an original disk. This begins the process of reading the
diskette. A Read operation will terminate one of three ways:
1. Successful completion of the diskette read.
2. Unsuccessful diskette read.
3. Pirate abort using the Cancel button.
Upon successful completion of a diskette read, Long John Silver will ask you to
insert a target diskette to continue the piracy process. If the read was
unsuccessful, you will be prompted for appropriate action. If you press cancel
while reading, you will be asked to confirm this choice.
Note: While awaiting your response, Deck Swabber will continue to read the
disk. This crew saving feature is part of Deck Swabber's powerful
multitasking piracy technology.
If you confirm a cancellation of a diskette read, the process aborts and
returns you to the AutoPirate window. From there, you may choose to re-read
the disk, or cancel the entire piracy operation.
Note: Cancelling a disk read operation does not harm the diskette in any way.
Nevertheless, Davy Jones Software Locker recommends that all source
disks be write protected prior to their use.*

Pressing write causes the target disk to be written. This process will
terminate in one of three ways:
1. Successful completion of the disk write.
2. Unsuccessful diskette write.
3. Pirate abort using the Cancel button.
Upon successful completion of a disk write, Long John Silver will prompt you
for appropriate action, which may be another write, a new read, or the end of
the software piracy. If the write was unsuccessful, you will be prompted for
appropriate action. This may include a format operation, or may be an
instruction to unprotect a write protected disk. If you press cancel while
writing, you will be asked to confirm this choice.
Note: While awaiting your response, Deck Swabber will continue to write the
disk. This crew saving feature is part of Deck Swabber's powerful
multitasking piracy technology.
If you confirm a cancellation of a diskette write, the process aborts and
returns you to the AutoPirate window. From there, you may choose to re-write
the disk, or cancel the entire piracy operation.
Note: Cancellation of a diskette write operation in progress can produce a
target disk with invalid data. If this is necessary, be sure not to use
the disk until it is rewritten or reformatted.

option of formatting the target disk. If this option is chosen, the disk
format sequence begins. It resembles a normal write operation. If successful,
the format operation will automatically start to write the newly formatted
target disk.
Note: The format option may appear as a result of a bad disk or other factors
which cannot be resolved simply by formatting the target disk. Use your
seafaring savvy to determine whether a format is appropriate.

considered an abormal operation. Selecting keep on sailing dismisses the cancel
request. Abandon ship causes the current disk operation to halt. The disk
action which was cancelled can be restarted from the AutoPirate dialog.
