Deck Swabber version 1.10 instructions.
"Deck Swabber - Because a blank disk is a lonely disk!" (tm)
When Deck Swabber v1.00 was released, it was the scourge of the seven seas!
But the time has come for mightier, braver software to take command and sail
the proud galleons of pirates worldwide into the realm of high tech, low cost
software reproduction.
Fortunately, Davy Jones Software Locker (tm) brandished its sabre and met the
challenge head on, with Deck Swabber 1.10! This seafaring product incorporates
features which make software retailers tremble with fear, including:
AutoPirate - The standard against which all software piracy is judged!
Multithreaded operation - Faster, smoother sailing.
Multiple databases - The more the merrier!
And of course, an extensive repetoire of politically incorrect humor!
"Unsure about copying software? Leave it to Davy Jones Software Locker!" (tm)
Contents:
Your Deck Swabber package contains the following files:
DeckSwab.EXE - The executeable file
DeckSwab.HLP - The help file
DeckSwab.DOC - This file
Install.CMD - The installation utility
Installation:
The Install.CMD file can be used to provide automatic installation. This
creates a target directory and copies all four files (including itself) to it.
It also optionally creates a desktop program object for Deck Swabber. Any
previous desktop Deck Swabber program object will be replaced. Install also
displays this file upon completion.
For manual installation, create a Deck Swabber directory. Copy DeckSwab.EXE
and DeckSwab.HLP into this directory. For online help, DeckSwab.HLP must
appear either in the Deck Swabber directory, or in the system Help directory.
DeckSwab.DOC and Install.CMD are not necessary for program operation, but
should be copied over for reference purposes.
The most user friendly method for running Deck Swabber is from a program icon
installed onto the Workplace Shell*. Deck Swabber 1.10 can use any database
file simply by passing the filename as a parameter. If no parameter is passed,
the file PIRATE.DAT is used.
To Run:
To run Deck Swabber, double click on its program object icon (if you created
one). From the OS/2* command line, type DECKSWAB <datafile>, where <datafile>
is the name of the database file. If <datafile> is omitted, the file
PIRATE.DAT is used (for compatibility with Deck Swabber 1.00).
Upon invocation, Deck Swabber looks for your software database file.
If found, the data is loaded into Deck Swabber and processing
continues. If the file is not found, Deck Swabber prompts you for default
booty. Selecting "yes" allows you to start a new database using Deck Swabber's
defaults. Selecting "no" allows you to define your own types.
The database file is an ASCII text file, so that recovery is simple in the
event of corruption. Since future versions of Deck Swabber may incorporate
more features, the file has a version number stamp. This ensures compatibility
with future versions of Deck Swabber without the need to reenter software data.
Operation:
Deck Swabber is essentially a spreadsheet of all of your software. It lists
pertinent data, such as name, version, operating system, etc. Use Deck
Swabber's extensive and humorous context-sensitive online help for guidance.
Notes for users of Deck Swabber 1.00:
Tribute:
Davy Jones Software Locker would like to extend special thanks to you. Your
tremendous feedback and support have helped make Davy Jones Software Locker
the number one name in software piracy. Your loyalty far outstrips that of the
cutthroat software companies which hamper our efforts. To you, we dedicate
Deck Swabber 1.10! Keep on sailing!
Release Notes:
The following paragraphs detail changes and enhancements made since the
release of Deck Swabber 1.00.
_____________________________________________________________________________
File Format
Deck Swabber 1.10 will flawlessly read database files generated by v1.00, but
version 1.00 will not correctly read version 1.10 files. This is the result of
a change in development philosophy here at DJSL. Unlike BillieSoft, we like
version numbers to have some meaning.
Deck Swabber 1.00 checks the version number in the database file, and if it
doesn't match up to "1.0", it is assumed to be an incompatible file format. In
reality, the file format has not changed between 1.00 and 1.10. If it it
necessary that a v1.10 file be read by version 1.00, simply change the line
from %VERSION=1.10
to %VERSION=1.00
then Deck Swabber 1.00 will be able to read the file.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Help
Deck Swabber 1.00's context sensitive help was not as context sensitive as it
should have been when invoked with the mouse. This is because the "Help"
buttons would receive the input focus when pressed, so whatever help appeared
always referred to the dialog as a whole, not to the specific control being
accessed. This has been corrected.
The "Help" button on the font dialog now functions.
F1 now brings up Extended Help from the main window.
Help for the Description field incorrectly stated that Description fields were
not supported. This has been corrected.
Formatting errors have been removed from several help panels.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Fonts
The font selection dialog does not always correctly default to the currently
selected font. Font enhancements, such as underline, strikeout, and outline
are ignored.
Dragging a font from a Font Palette does not resize the description window.
The font will, however, be recorded correctly.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Colors
Drag drop support from a color palette is not supported.
_____________________________________________________________________________
AutoPirate
The feature you've all been waiting for has arrived!
_____________________________________________________________________________
Sabre Pointer
While the mouse is in the Software Booty Window, the pointer displays a sabre.
This is a humorous way of letting you know that low cost software acquisition
is only a mouse click away!
_____________________________________________________________________________
Databases
Deck Swabber 1.00 used a file, PIRATE.DAT, as its database. With no command
line arguments, v1.10 acts identically. However, it is possible to specify a
different database by passing the filename as a single parameter.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Disk Types
A bug in the disk type definition window has been corrected. It was possible
before to change the drives for a given disk type, yet Deck Swabber would
ignore the change.
The default booty for disk type names now uses fractions instead of decimals
for disk sizes. (ex. 5¼" instead of 5.25").
Bugs in the default booty disk drive definitions which defined nonexistent
drives upon first use of Deck Swabber have been removed.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Software Booty Window
Under some conditions, when a software item was added or changed, the Software
Booty Window would become corrupted. The data would be stored, and would
appear normally the next time Deck Swabber was run, but would not be visible.
This bug has been corrected.
