  4. Version 1.00 Changes from TUNELS12
  5.  
  6. There are a lot of these.
  7.  
  8. 1.  3 additional questions on page 1 are included so some tuning
  9.     can be done depending on how you and your applications use the
  10.     server.
  11.  a. Do you store application code on the server?  If so,
  12.     you'll get more bigbuffs to use to download it.
  13.  
  14.  b. For those of you who have asked, the 16KB Token Ring Adapter is now
  15.     supported.  Watch for the error message which says a 16/4 adapter
  16.     is REQUIRED, though.
  17.  
  18.  c. Finally, what type of I/O do your applications do, mainly.
  19.     Data base apps are random, word processing, spreadsheets, etc
  20.     are sequential.  Data base can use more cache, sequential apps
  21.     can use more read-ahead buffers.  What do you want?
  22.  
  23. 2.  The second screen of questions asks what other applications
  24.     besides the server which may require Communications Manager
  25.     NETBIOS or 802.2 resources to be defined.  So, if you have
  26.     other NETBIOS applications, the IBM LAN Network Manager,
  27.     SNA Gateway, Appc, Remote Data Services, or other 802.2
  28.     applications, your requirements can be factored into the
  29.     generated parameter recommendations.
  30.  
  31. 3.  Screen 3 has more error messages than before, but you still need
  32.     to ensure you have a string of OK's displayed here before
  33.     going on to the results.  OK, I know the last entry will say
  34.     "None" if there are no warnings.  The OK's are the important things.
  35.  
  36. 4.  There are several new error checks and error messages.  These
  37.     should not make use of the tool harder, though.
  38.  
  39. 5.  Note that some new fields are calculated.  Transmit buffer count,
  40.     802.2. users, NETBIOS Remote Name Directory size to name some.
  41.  
  42. 6.  The 802.2 Transmit Buffer Size recommendation is larger.  New
  43.     capabilities in 1.3 cause this, it is not an error.
  44.  
  45. 7.  The results of the memory map and other calculations are now shown.
  46.     See cells D49 through D57.  As always, memory calculations are best
  47.     effort, not warranties.
  48.  
  49. 8.  SRVHEURISTICS and SRVPIPES are also calculated now.

  51. 9.  I tried to include the new memory requirements, but these are taken
  52.     from the documentation, and are not something I've tried out myself,
  53.     so I don't swear by them.  You shouldn't either.  Use of this tool
  54.     to find a minimum system is dangerous!  It will give minimum
  55.     performance, and it may not run at all.
  56.  
  57. 10. You might notice that there are fewer assumption made now.
  58.  
  59. 11. As indicated, the Work Area and the Error messages areas have grown.
  60.  
  61. 12. The LOTUS version is now a WK1 file, not a WKS file.  I have only
  62.     used it with 123/G.  No warrenty expressed or implied to those of you
  63.     who may want to run this on a DOS system.

  65. It is possible to use TUNELS12 on a 1.3 server, but use of CNFGLS13 will
  66. probably give a better performing system.  Using CNFGLS13 on a 1.2
  67. server is not recommended - it can waste some memory.  Will run, though.
  68. Neither TUNELS12 or CNFGLS13 can be used to generate reliable LAN Server
  69. 1.0 configurations.

  107. A customer reported a problem when starting DLRINST.  Insufficient
  108. resources.  Found and fixed the bug.
  109.  
  110. Also modified some formulae to try to speed up the calculation process a
  111. bit; added INI and cache allotments to the 'memory required' calculation;
  112. and clarified the wording of the question asking for the number of
  113. stations required by a user's APPC application.

  118. Version 1.03   (4/30/91)
  119.  
  120. NOTE:  This version of CNFGLS13 is to be used on servers with the SPE
  121.        installed that brings the server to 1.30.1, WR05015.  4/26/91.
  122.  
  123. 1.  This allows the HPFS to use DISKCACHE.  In fact, the server will
  124.     make fairly small use of HPFS cache.  Therefore, CNFGLS13 will cut
  125.     the size of HPFS cache in many cases and calculate a DISKCACHE for
  126.     CONFIG.SYS.  The new caching will allow cache to contain code being
  127.     downloaded from the server to requesters, and will cache certain
  128.     random record I/O better than HPFS cache did. You may see performance
  129.     improvements of 20 percent or so.  BUT, watch out for swapping!  If
  130.     your server starts swapping, cut DISKCACHE back (in 512KB increments)
  131.     to stop the swapping.  CNFGLS13 will only leave 1MB free for NET RUN,
  132.     AT, administrator, and printing functions, and this may not be enough
  133.     for your server.

  135.     If you are downloading code from your server and are copying it to
  136.     a VDISK to save disk I/O, you no longer need to do this (and share
  137.     the VDISK.)  Eliminate it and give the memory to DISKCACHE and the
  138.     operation will be automatic!
  139.  
  140. 2.  Remote Data Services support of DOS requesters had some errors which
  141.     have been fixed in 1.03 of CNFGLS13.  Didn't count NETBIOS resources
  142.     all correctly.
  143.  
  144. 3.  Several fields' editing and error messages have changed for clarity.
  145.  
  146. 4.  Communications Manager (CM) resource definitions have been re-ordered
  147.     so they are presented in the same sequence as the CM screens present
  148.     them.
  149.  
  150. 5.  The LOGIC document has had a major workover to reflect all changes.
  151.  
  152. 6.  APPC no longer gets a SAP (it uses SNA's)

  160. This version of CNFGLS13 includes only minor changes.
  161.  
  162. 1.  Cell F7 has been modified to recommend the maximum size frame
  163.     supported by a 16/4 adapter running at 4Mbps (4464 Bytes) when
  164.     the server has application code which will be downloaded to
  165.     requesters.  This can decrease the number of frames required for the
  166.     download and decrease the server workload as a consequence.
  167.  
  168. 2.  Remote Data Services support of DOS requesters.  The requesters were
  169.     not counted in the recommended number of NETBIOS Stations.  Cell
  170.     F14 has been modified to count them (defined in cell S26.)
  171.  
  172. 3.  Cell F9 has been modified to not recommend fewer than 800 queue
  173.     elements.
  174.  
  175. 4.  The LOGIC document has been modified to reflect all changes.
  176.  
  177. 5.  An additional module is now included in the package.  CNFGLS13
  178.     NOTES is a ten page paper which describes most of the parameter
  179.     interdependences taken into account by the package, and explains
  180.     many of the assumptions I have had to make in it.

  195. A user reported that version 1.04 generated a DISKCACHE=0,128
  196. recommendation - not a valid statement!

  198. 1.  Cell A3 now has my ID/NODE and PRODIGY I.D. in it if you want to
  199.     get in touch with me for some reason.
  200.  
  201. 2.  Cells S/T35 now do one of two parts of the server memory (RAM)
  202.     check.  The formula got too big for one cell.
  203.  
  204. 3.  Cell B58 has the second part of the test.  You can now get a message
  205.     that additional server memory is recommended or one to 'see' col K.
  206.  
  207. 4.  E21-23 will be blank if there is not enough memory for cache.
  208.  
  209. 5.  A247-249 are now copies of E21-23.
