A Basic way to OS/2 Presentation Manager.
As a Basic programmers, maybe you'd like to start writing today
for PM. But this is not as easy as under MS-DOS.
You should learn to program in C language to program effectively.
The MS Basic OS/2 application note is mainly a way to invoke OS
API from a Basic program, but still impose the learning of many
concepts of PM programming. And still they recommend using C
language to develop full featured PM apps.
But what if you want to start writing in Basic and NOW ?
Is there a better way ?
Yes, there is.
It's PRONTO! PM.
What is PRONTO! PM ?
This is a tool for instantaneous Presentation Manager programming,
and it is a comprehensive library of functions that allow the
Basic language programmer to write programs under the OS/2
operating system using the sophisticated graphics capabilities of
the Presentation Manager with a minimum of effort. With PRONTO! PM
much of the power of the OS/2 Presentation Manager, previously
reserved to C programmers, is at the fingertips of everyone!.
PRONTO! PM advantanges
As a software house which produces accounting software using MS
Basic, we recognized the need to migrate ours applications in the
OS/2 field, just to use the new features of this operating system:
faster program execution, more memory, seamless connectivity,
multi-tasking and inter process communications and the exciting
graphical user interface named the Presentation Manager. We knew
that rewriting all our software using a new language under a new
operating system, would be a time consuming, tedious and error
prone job.
That's why we developed PRONTO! PM library.
With PRONTO! PM, quite a lot of your existing code can be ported
in the new exciting windowing environment, without forcing you to
learn new "write only" languages such as C and allowing you to
write real programs for real applications right out of the box.
We tought that if PRONTO! PM worked so well for us, someone else
could find it useful too.
Not only the software house will benefit from using PRONTO! PM;
the professional consultants who need to put up a prototype of
applications fast, using a faster compiler and making faster
modifications will become an PRONTO! PM addicted. So why spend
time writing a bunch of "C" code only to say "Hello world" ?.
Just to clarify think that the old Hello program (greater than 100
lines in C) becomes less than 30 lines using Basic and PRONTO! PM.
What is in the package.
The PRONTO! PM package is made of a library and some include
files. Plus we have added a macro preprocessor to let you build
programs without overflowing the constant table of the compiler.
Documentation is available either in printed form in a littlemanual and in QuickHelp form, ready to be chained to the help
system of the QuickBasic Extended environment.
PRONTO! PM comes in two disk formats: five and one quarter inches
high density, or three and one half inches high density. Other
formats are available on request.
Systems requirements.
To use PRONTO! PM, you will need:
- A 80286/80386 computer with 4 MB RAM memory
- 1 MB free hard disk space
- MS or IBM OS/2 1.2 operating system
- MS Basic 7 PDS
- MS Presentation Manager Programmer's Toolkit
From the hardware side, the library was developed on a 4MB RAM
equipped IBM PS/2 Model 80 personal computer with a 110 MB hard
disk, running IBM OS/2 1.2 and using HPFS. The compiled
applications however will run with much less resources (all of the
library, when used, have a less-than-200 Kb overhead).

diskette simply write or call to:
