Personal System/2(R) 486/25 Power Platform
The Personal System/2 486/25 Power Platform(TM), with a 25MHz i486(1)
32-bit microprocessor, enhances the PS/2 family of systems by offering a
new level of advanced performance in a desktop unit. The 486/25 Power
Platform is an optional upgrade kit for the Model 70 386 (8570-A21) that
significantly increases performance by replacing the existing 25MHz 80386
microprocessor with a new 25MHz i486 microprocessor. The 486/25 Power
Platform includes a 25MHz i486 32-bit microprocessor which features an
internal memory cache controller, an internal 8KB memory cache, and an
internal floating-point processing unit that performs the functions of an
external 80387 math co-processor.
The Model 70 386 with the 486/25 Power Platform installed is appropriate
for advanced users who perform numeric-intensive applications requiring
floating point operations, advanced graphics, and large memory capacities.
The 486/25 Power Platform is compatible with most existing software
products for IBM personal computer and Personal System/2 systems. The
486/25 Power Platform is supported by Operating System/2(TM) Standard
Edition 1.1 and 1.2, Operating System/2 Extended Edition 1.1 and 1.2, and
the Disk Operating System (DOS) Version 3.3 and 4.0. The 486/25 Power
Platform will be supported by the Advanced Interactive Executive Personal
System/2 (AIX(TM) PS/2) in the first quarter 1990.

DESCRIPTION
The Personal System/2 486/25 Power Platform enhances the PS/2 family of
systems by offering a new level of advanced performance in a desktop unit.
The 486/25 Power Platform is an optional upgrade kit for the Model 70 386
(8570-A21) that significantly increases performance by replacing the
existing 25MHz 80386 microprocessor with a new 25MHz i486 microprocessor.
In addition to the new 486/25 Power Platform, the kit includes 2 EPROM
modules to upgrade the system board of the 8570-A21 to support the 486/25
Power Platform. This kit is to be installed by IBM or an IBM Authorized
Remarketer.
The 486/25 Power Platform with 25MHz i486 processing power is particularly
well suited to advanced users who perform numeric-intensive applications,
such as:
o Engineering/Scientific Analysis
o Image Processing
o Financial Modeling
o Software Development
The 486/25 Power Platform is designed to maintain compatibility with all
supported features of the 8570-A21. A complete list of supported features
will be provided at product availability.
MARKETING INFORMATION
Product Positioning
The Personal System/2 486/25 Power Platform, when installed in the
8570-A21, provides the most powerful computing platform offered in the
Personal System/2 family of systems. The 486/25 Power Platform is
appropriate for users and environments that require high performance
computational capabilities; for example, engineering and scientific
applications, image processing, software development, and artificial
intelligence.
Marketing Strategy
The Personal System/2 486/25 Power Platform is primarily for the business
and technical office environments. The i486 microprocessor makes the
system ideal for applications requiring high performance computational
capabilities. The integrated floating point unit is well suited for
engineering/scientific, financial modeling, and image/voice applications.
