ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.2. Save a puzzle to file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A puzzle that has been read into the program can be saved back into the same
file or into another file.
To save into the same file that it was read from,
select Save item in the File menu OR
type Ctrl+S in the main window OR
click on the Save button in the tool bar.
To save it as a different file, select Save As item in the File menu and
specify the file name in the save file selection box.
If a file that the puzzle is being saved to using Save As already exists, it
will be renamed with the same file name but with an extension of .BAK before
the puzzle is written to file. Any previous .BAK file with the same name will
be overwritten.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Save a puzzle to file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following dialog box is used to select a filename to save the puzzle to.
Click on items in the dialog pictured below to receive relevant descriptions.
Click on OK to save the puzzle to the selected file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.3. Creating an Across puzzle ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To create a crossword puzzle that you can distribute as an Across puzzle, you
must
1. Write the puzzle in a text file using a text editor (such as the OS/2
System Editor) or a word-processor that can save the file as a text file.
The puzzle must be written in a specific syntax (or format). Click here
for the format and an example. You must name the text file with the
extension .TXT.
2. Open the puzzle in Across Lite. In the file open dialog box that comes up
when you select Open command in the File menu, select Plain Text in the
file type list to display all text files. Select the file you created in
Step 1 and click on OK. If there are no errors in the puzzle description,
the puzzle will be read in.
3. Save the puzzle using the Save command in the File menu. The puzzle will
be saved as an Across puzzle.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> TEXT Import file format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The TEXT file for importing must conform to the following template for it to be
successfully read and the filename must have the extension .TXT. This format is
case-sensitive and the order of items is important. All leading and trailing
blanks and tabs are ignored in each line (except in the <NOTEPAD> section).
Empty lines are not ignored.

<NOTEPAD>
This is an example notepad entry.
There are two lines in this notepad entry.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.4. Enter or edit letters in the grid ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the input focus is in the grid window, a typed-in letter will appear in
the current cell regardless of the position of the mouse cursor. There is
always a current cell in the grid and it is highlighted with yellow color.
The entered letters always appear in upper case. The state of the caps lock key
has no effect.
Only English alphabets can be entered into the grid. If the current cell is
filled, typing another letter will overwrite it.
Letters can be erased with either the Backspace or the Delete key. The Edit
menu operations Cut, Paste, Delete and Clear Grid provide more ways to
edit/enter letters in the grid.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Highlighted Cell ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At any time, one of the cells in the grid is always highlighted in red color
(or in the color chosen by the user in the Color options preference box). This
is the cell to which any keyboard entry will be directed to. Commands to move
on the grid change the position of the current cell.
In addition, the rest of the word (in either across or down direction)
containing the current cell is highlighted in gray (or in the color chosen by
the user in the Color options preference box.
The direction of the current word (across or down) can be changed in several
ways:
Using the mouse:
Click the left mouse button in a cell that you wish to make the current
cell and while holding the button move the mouse(cursor) at least one cell
in the direction you wish to select before you release the button. This
action is similar to the way you normally select a word in a word-processor
except that you do not have to drag the mouse till the end of the word.
The appropriate direction is selected when you click on any clue in the
clue list with the left mouse button.
If you have chosen the option to have the right mouse button click
associated with a switch in direction, then you can use also use the right
mouse button to switch the direction.
Using the keyboard:
To toggle the direction without changing the current cell use Ctrl or
Ctrl for across and down directions respectively.
Commands to move on the grid will also change the direction as appropriate.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.5. Clear the grid ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At any time, all entered letters in the puzzle can be cleared to obtain a fresh
puzzle by choosing the Clear Grid item in the Edit menu.
This action CANNOT be undone.
A confirmation is requested before the letters are cleared.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.6. Use a pen or pencil ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
By default, all letters entered in the grid will appear in black and the Use
Pen item in the Edit menu and the Pen button in the tool will be kept selected.
Some people write very lightly on paper or scribble in the margin or in a
corner of the cell for solutions that they are not absolutely sure about. The
program provides you with an equivalent.
When the Use Pencil item in the Edit menu or the Pencil button in the tool bar
is selected, all letters entered from then on will appear in gray color until
the mode is changed back to a Pen.
The program really does not handle the pen and pencil options differently
except for the color. It is as easy to erase the "pencil"ed in letters as it is
to erase the "pen"ed letters. It is just a way for you to have two degrees of
confidence in your solutions. You can overwrite a 'pencil'ed letter with a pen
when you gain more confidence in those cells. To change entered letters from
pencil to pen or vice versa, press SHIFT+SPACEBAR while on the cell.
You may switch between the two modes at any time. The mode for each letter will
also be saved in the file when the puzzle is saved. Use Ctrl Spacebar to toggle
between pen and pencil in the current cell.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.7. Move around in the grid ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To accommodate personal tastes, Across Lite provides several ways to move
around in the grid.
The following is a list of grid movement commands:
(Also see Quick Reference for switching directions with the mouse)
Commands Action
, , , Move to next white cell(if any) in that direction. Exception If
you have the Pause on switch with arrow keys option turned on in
the Solve Preferences, the current location will not advance if
the current location is unfilled and the arrow key pressed
changes the current direction (Across or Down).
SHIFT+ Move to previous Across clue if the current direction is Across.
If the current direction is Down, move to the Down word to the
left(if any) of the current letter.
SHIFT+ Move to next Across clue if the current direction is Across. If
the current direction is Down, move to the Down word to the right
(if any) of the current letter.
SHIFT+ Move to next Down clue if the current direction is Down If the
current direction is Across, move to the Across word (if any)
directly below the current letter.
SHIFT+ Move to previous Down word if the current direction is Down If
the current direction is Across, move to the Across word (if any)
directly above the current letter.
TAB/BACKTAB Move to next/previous word in the current direction.
HOME Move to first letter of current word.
SHIFT+HOME Move to first white cell in top-left corner.
END Move to last letter of current word.
SHIFT+END Move to last white cell in bottom-right corner.
RETURN Go to the next clue in the current direction.
<n> RETURN Go to cell with clue number <n> (if it exists).
<n> Go to <n> across (if it exists).
<n> Go to <n> down (if it exists).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.8. Enlarge or shrink the grid ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
For convenience and to suit personal tastes, the grid size can be scaled up or
down in fixed increments using the View menu items or the Zoom In and Zoom Out
buttons in the tool bar.
The size of the puzzle letters and the numbering will be scaled appropriately.
The current scale is always shown in the second field of the status bar, when
the status bar is visible. There are limits at either end of the scaling range
beyond which the grid cannot be scaled. Scroll bars will appear if necessary to
allow the entire grid to be viewed.
Changing the grid scale will not affect the current state of the puzzle in any
way.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.9. Scan the clue list ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Whenever the Across or Down clue columns are sized (see Pane sizes and
positions section in customizing the layout) to a height that can accommodate
at least two lines, the clues are presented as lists that can be scrolled. For
example, a layout with expanded clue columns may look something like this:
The clues corresponding to the current highlighted cell are also highlighted in
the clue lists. If you click on one of the clues to select it, the
corresponding grid word will be highlighted. The grid window will scroll if
necessary.
When you click in a clues list, the keyboard focus will change to the clues
list and you can scroll through the list using the up and down arrow keys (,
) or the Page Up and Page Down keys rather than the scroll bar. However, if
you wish to enter a solution, you will need to shift the focus back to the
grid. Double-clicking on any item in the clue list will select that clue and
transfer keyboard focus to the grid. Since the corresponding word would already
have been selected, the solution can simply be typed in after the double click.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.10. Customize the Program ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To accommodate vast differences in puzzle sizes, monitor sizes and resolutions,
personal tastes, etc., Across Lite allows for a number of customization options
and a feature to save a particular state of customization The customization is
automatically saved when you exit the program for future sessions.
The customizations that can be saved for future sessions are:
Window Display Customization
Layout type
You may select from a category of layouts that defines the relative
positions of the clues and the grid. This selection is done using the
layout options dialog box
Clue Prompt Position and Size
The clue prompt can be placed above or below the puzzle grid. This
selection is done using the window options dialog box. The height of the
clue prompt can be changed by using the pane separator that is between the
clue prompt and the puzzle grid.
Pane sizes and positions
Whenever one of the windows contains more than two items (from amongst the
two clue columns and the grid), the items are in different panes separated
by a pane separator. Using the pane separator, you can change the relative
sizes of the panes within the window.
Tool Bar and Status Bar
Both the tool bar and the status bar can be separately made visible or
invisible. This selection is done using the window options dialog box.
Disabling these increases the area available to show the puzzle.
Grid scale
The grid size can be scaled up or down using the Zoom In and Zoom Out
buttons in the tool bar or the View menu items.
Fancy cursor
The cursor on the puzzle grid can be switched between a standard cursor and
a fancy hand cursor in the window options dialog. Solve Options
Cursor movement
The highlighted current cell can automatically move to the next cell or to
the next unfilled cell on entering a letter.
The highlighted current cell can also automatically move to the first
unfilled cell when you switch directions or when you go to a new word using
the keyboard commands.
The mouse cursor can follow the highlighted cell whenever the cursor is
within the grid.
All the above features can be switched on/off using the solve options
dialog.
Use of right mouse button
Clicking the right mouse button on the grid is designed to bring up a
context dependent popup menu for command commands. However, you can choose
to have the right mouse button click tied to the switch direction in the
grid command by setting an option in the solve options dialog.
Automatic answer check
You can choose to have the program automatically check every letter as you
enter it and indicate with a cross mark if it is incorrect. This option can
be set in the solve options dialog.
Color Options
Most of the colors used in the Across Lite Window display can be changed using
the color options dialog. Currently, you can change the colors of

Print Options
Some options can be set in the print options dialogfor all printing done
through Across Lite.
Ink saver option
The darkness of the black cells in the puzzle grid can be made lighter
during printing to result in significant savings in the amount of ink used
for printing (that can add up over time if you are a regular puzzle solver)
without affecting the look of the puzzle grid too much
Grid position
The position of the puzzle can be specified to be in any of the four
quadrants and the clues will be arranged in the remaining space around the
grid. This selection is relevant only when both the puzzle grid as well as
the clues are being printed together.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Resizing the panes ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Whenever the puzzle grid and the clue columns are in the same window, they are
separated by a pane separator which is a thin narrow band. For example, in the
layout below, there is a vertical pane separator between the grid and the clue
columns and there is a horizontal pane separator between the two clue columns.
When the mouse cursor is moved over the pane separator, the cursor changes
shape to one of or
The cursors indicate the directions in which the the separators can be moved.
To move the separator, click on it with the left mouse button and drag the
mouse in the direction in which you would like to move the separator. Release
the button at the new position for the separator. The two adjoining panes will
resize themselves with respect to the separator.
The separator is used to resize the panes relative to each other to customize
the display.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Layout categories ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the Layout options... item is selected in the Preference menu, the
following dialog box is presented to select the category of layout. Click on
each of the layout buttons in the dialog picture below to obtain a brief
description.
For a given puzzle size (grid size as well as average clue length) and monitor
size, one type of layout may be more suitable than another. The layout category
can be changed at any time without affecting the current state of the puzzle.
The current layout selection is automatically saved for future sessions.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Window display preferences ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the Window options... item is selected in the Preference menu, a dialog
box with the options described below is presented to customize the window
display.

Clue prompt options
Select the position of the clue prompt to be above or below the puzzle grid
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Solve options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the Solve options... item is selected in the Preference menu, a dialog box
with the options described below is presented to customize solve preferences.
Move mouse cursor automatically
With this option, the mouse pointer follows the current letter location
whenever it is on the puzzle grid.
Skip after entering a letter
With this option, the current letter location will move after entering a
letter. If Skip to next blank is chosen, it will move to the next available
black cell in the same word, cycling back if necessary to find it. If there
is no blank cell in the current word or the Skip to next cell option is
chosen, it will move to the adjacent cell in the current direction even if
it si filled.
Jump to a blank square...
You can set options here to make the current letter location automatically
go to an available blank cell (if any) when you switch direction or when
you go to a new word.
Pause on switch with arrow keys
When this option is set, using the arrow key while on a blank cell to go in
a direction other than the current direction, will switch the direction
without moving the current letter location in that direction.
Right Mouse Actions
You can tie the right mouse button click on the puzzle grid to either popup
a menu of common commands or alternatively to switch direction (Across or
Down). If it is tied to switch direction, you can choose to have the
current letter location move to the mouse pointer location before switching
or to switch in place.
Solution Auto check
Selecting this option will make the program indicate a wrong letter
immediately after entering the letter. It will not reveal the correct
answer but just indicate the incorrectness. This option is only relevant
when a puzzle has the solution available and unscrambled.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Color options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the Color options... item is selected in the Preference menu, a dialog box
with the options described below is presented to customize Across lite display
colors.
Currently the following colors can be individually changed:
Current letter cell highlight (default: red)
Current word highlight (default: gray)
Pen Color (default: black)
Pencil Color (default: gray)
Current clue in the current direction text color (default: red)
Current clue in the current direction highlight color (default: gray)
Crossing clue at the current location text color (default: red)
Clue prompt text color (default: dark red)
Click on the corresponding color buttons to get a palatte of colors to choose
from.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Print options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the Print options... item is selected in the Preference menu, a dialog box
with the options descrined below is presented to customize printing
preferences. The options set here will apply to all subsequent print operations
until it is explicitly changed.
Ink saver option You can choose the density of ink in the black cells during
printing using this list box. Lighter density will use less ink than
darker densities.
Puzzle grid position The puzzle can be printed with the puzzle grid appearing
in any of the four quadrants of the paper. The clues will be typeset
around it. This option is only relevant when both the puzzle grid
and the clues are being printed together on a single page.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.11. Check against solution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At any time during the solving of the puzzle, entered letters may be checked
against the solution if the solution exists in the puzzle and is not scrambled.
The Solution menu provides three commands for checking.
Current Letter to check the entered letter in the currectly selected cell only.
Selection Only to check the entered letters in just the currently selected
word.
All Letters to check all entered letters in the puzzle.
If the letter is correct, nothing is indicated. If the letter is incorrect, it
is crossed out. For example, in the picture below, the current word was checked
against the solution. The first letter is correct while the remaining letters
are indicated to be incorrect.
The crossed out letters can be deleted or overwritten as in any other cell.
When a crossed out cell is changed, the cross is removed and a black triangle
is left in the top right corner as a reminder that the cell was checked. For
example, on changing the second letter in the above word, it would look
something like this
The check marks are not saved when the puzzle is saved to a file.
Note: Some puzzles may come with no solution or with the solution scrambled.
The creators of the puzzle also have an option to disable the solution checking
and revealing commands. For such puzzles, you will not be able to use the above
commands.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.12. Reveal solution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
At any time during the solving of the puzzle, the solution can be revealed
fully or in part if the solution exists in the puzzle and is not scrambled. The
Solution menu provides four commands for revealing a solution.
Current letter to reveal the letter in the current cell only
Selection Only to reveal the letters in the currently selected word
Incorrect Letters to reveal only those cells that have incorrect letters in
them.
Complete Solution to reveal the entire solution.
If a revealed cell has the correct letter, nothing is indicated. If a revealed
cell has an incorrect letter, the letter is replaced with the solution and the
top right corner is marked with a red triangle as a reminder that the solution
was revealed.
For example, in the picture below, the solution was revealed for the currently
selected word. The first two letters are correct and left as they are while the
remaining letters are replaced with the solution.
The revealed letters cannot be deleted or overwritten unless the entire grid is
cleared or the puzzle is written to file and read back. The revealed status is
not saved when the puzzle is saved to a file.
Note: Some puzzles may come with no solution or with the solution scrambled.
The creators of the puzzle also have an option to disable the solution checking
and revealing commands. For such puzzles, you will not be able to use the above
commands.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.13. Scramble solution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Across Lite provides a feature to scramble the solution and to make the
solution checking and revealing options unavailable while the solution is
scrambled. The scrambled solution can be unscrambled using a 4-digit key that
is generated by the program at the time the solution is scrambled. When the
puzzle is saved, the solution, if scrambled, will be saved in the scrambled
form.
The solution is scrambled when the Scramble item in the Solution menu is
chosen.
The following items should be noted:
The program generates the key to unscramble. The user cannot supply a key
to use for scrambling.
During the same session, multiple scrambles/unscrambles will use the key
generated the first time the solution is scrambled/unscrambled in the
session.
You must record the key to unscramble before the puzzle is saved with the
solution scrambled and the puzzle closed. The saved puzzle cannot be
unscrambled without the key even by the program creators. (i.e., there is
no master key).
There must be at least 12 letters in the solution for it to be scrambled.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.14. Unscramble solution ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Scrambled solutions in Across puzzles can be unscrambled using corresponding
4-digit keys provided by the publisher of the crossword. Each crossword puzzle
with scrambled solution will have its own 4 digit key. While scrambled, the
solution checking and revealing options will not be available. The puzzle can
still be solved by the user and the results saved to disk.
To unscramble the solution, select the Unscramble item in the Solution menu to
display a dialog similar to the following:
Enter the 4-digit key and click on OK to unscramble the puzzle. If the key
entered is incorrect for the puzzle, a warning will be issued and the solution
will remain scrambled. If the solution is successfully unscrambled, the
solution checking and revealing commands will be enabled.
Note: if the solution was scrambled in the same session or was already
unscrambled once using a key, the program remembers the key and will not prompt
for the key in the same session.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.15. Use the puzzle notepad ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Across Lite provides a notepad for each puzzle in which information about the
puzzle can be entered and saved along with the puzzle. The puzzle notepad is
opened by selecting the Notepad item in the View menu. A notepad similar to the
one pictured below will appear along with the contents of the notepad that may
already be associated with the puzzle:
The notepad entry can be edited by typing into the scrolled window. Keep the
following in mind:
The creators of the puzzle have an option to make the notepad read-only
for a given puzzle. For such puzzles, the contents of the notepad cannot
be edited.
Do not depend on the line lengths being preserved in Across Lite
implementations on other platforms. If the length of the line is too long
for the window, the line will wrap around. Line breaks will be preserved.
The width of spacing characters such as tabs are not guaranteed to be
uniform across platforms.
The notepad can contain at most 1023 characters.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.16. Print a puzzle ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Across Lite includes a layout algorithm to print the puzzle on a printer for
any paper size and orientation. The printed puzzle layout will be similar to
the layouts found in newspapers, books and magazines and is quite different
from the screen display. You will also be able to control the items that will
be included in the printed copy.
Note: You must already have the printer connected and configured to work with
OS/2 before you print from Across Lite. Please consult the manual for
the OS/2 operating system and/or the printer to attach and configure the
printer. Also, the creators of a puzzle have the option to not allow
printing when they create the puzzle file. If this option has been used,
the print button in the tool bar and the print item in the menu bar will
be disabled for that puzzle.
The print operation consists of the following steps:
1. Choose Print... from the File menu or click on the Print button in the
tool bar.
2. Select items to print from the dialog window presented. Click on OK in
this dialog to get the printer selection dialog.
3. Set up the printer options if required and click on OK in the printer
selection dialog to start printing.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Print items selection ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The first step in printing a puzzle is to select parts of the puzzle for
inclusion in the printed copy. When the print command is selected, a dialog
with the options described below appears.
Select one of the items in the top box to either choose a preset combination or
a customize option. When the preset options are selected, the items to be
included are reflected with check marks in the lower two boxes. When the
customize option is selected, the lower two boxes are enabled and the items to
be selected can be manually selected.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2.17. Use with WWW browsers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
If you have access to the Internet and have installed a World Wide Web(WWW)
browser such as WebExplorer(tm) from IBM that allows external viewers, you can
download puzzles that may be available on the Internet directly into Across
Lite to solve them. If configured correctly as explained below, clicking on a
link to an Across puzzle on a web page in your browser will result in the
browser downloading the puzzle file and automatically starting up Across Lite
with the puzzle loaded.
To use Across Lite in this fashion,
1. Register Across Lite as a helper application with the WWW browser the
first time. For an example, see Registering Across Lite with WebExplorer.
For other browsers, consult the manual for the browser or your internet
provider if they provided the browser. The procedures are reasonably
similar to the instructions for the browsers above and you may be able to
use the same instructions to configure your browser. The information you
will need to know is that Across crosswords have the recommended Mime
type of application and Mime sub type of x-crossword. In some cases, the
type is entered as application/x-crossword. The puzzle filename extension
is .PUZ (in some cases the leading period is left out).
2. Use the WWW browser to visit a site that carries Across puzzles.
3. Click on a link to the puzzle. If Step 1 is correctly carried out, the
puzzle will be downloaded and Across Lite will start up with the puzzle
loaded.
Important: Most browsers download the file into a temporary area from which
the puzzle will be read into Across Lite. When you exit from the browser, the
files in the temporary area are likely to be deleted even if you had worked on
the puzzle and saved it to the same file. For this reason, if you wish to come
back to the puzzle in a future session, we strongly recommend that you save it
into a different directory before you quit Across Lite.
For consistent operation, we suggest that you install the Across Lite program
permanently on your hard disk before registering its location with the browser
in Step 1.
Some browsers may not allow helper applications to be specified. With such
browsers, you may still download the puzzle into a file on the disk using the
browser and start Across Lite manually and read in the puzzle.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Registering Across Lite with WebExplorer(tm) ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
These instructions have been tested with Version 1.02 and 1.1b of WebExplorer.
Procedures for newer versions may vary. Check the online help for WebExplorer
for instructions on adding viewers. You will need a text editor to do the
following.
Before you register Across Lite with WebExplorer,
1. Ensure that WebExplorer is installed correctly and that you can access
WWW sites and download files using WebExplorer.
2. Determine the location of the .INI file that WebExplorer uses on your
system. The default is usually C:\TCPIP\ETC\EXPLORE.INI but may vary
depending on the installation in your system.
3. Read the on-line help for WebExplorer for instructions on adding viewers.
To get the relevant help panel, select Help Index from the Help menu.
Double click on .INI file item in the index. Read the help in this panel
to determine the location of the .INI file being used. Double click on
add viewer support link in this panel to get to the Adding Viewers panel.
Read this help page completely before proceeding.
4. CLOSE ALL running WebExplorer instances before the registration steps.
This is extremely important.
If you have already installed other viewers following the procedure explained
in the on-line help, then use the information in the steps below to gather the
appropriate information to enter in the existing files. Otherwise, use the
steps below as an example setup. The actual directories and filenames may vary
as indicated.
1. Create a file called EXTMAP.EXT using a text editor in the directory
where the EXPLORER.INI file resides with the following line in it
application/x-crossword puz PUZ
You may vary the name of the file and keep it in a directory other than
the one suggested above. But do use the extension .EXT for the file.
2. Create a file called MAILCAP.CAP using a text editor in the directory
where the EXPLORER.INI file resides with the following line in it
application/x-crossword; C:\ACROSS\ACROSSL.EXE %s
Replace C:\ACROSS\ACROSSL.EXE in the line above with the full pathname to
the Across Lite program if it is installed elsewhere. You may vary the
name MAILCAP.CAP and save it in a different directory from the one
siggested above but do use the extension .CAP for the filename.
3. Open the WebExplorer .INI file using a text editor. Go to a section with
the heading [advanced]. There should be two lines shown below in that
section (usually surrounded by some comments)
mailcap=
extmap=
If there is a filename after the = signs, other viewers may have already
been specified in those files and you must add the line specified for
EXTMAP.EXT instead to the file specified for extmap= and the line
specified for MAILCAP.CAP instead to the file specified for mailcap=.
Otherwise, add the full pathname and filename for the EXTMAP.EXT and
MAILCAP.CAP file in the advanced section as follows
mailcap=C:\TCPIP\ETC\MAILCAP.CAP
extmap=C:\TCPIP\ETC\EXTMAP.EXT
If you placed the files in a different directory and/or changed the names
of the files, substitute the appropriate path and filename in the above
lines. Save the .INI file and exit from the editor.
4. The registration is now complete.
To test the registration, start WebExplorer. Drag and drop an Across Lite
puzzle from a folder onto the WebExplorer window. Across Lite should start
with that puzzle. If this does not occur, close WebExplorer and retrace the
steps above to ensure that the instructions have been carried out correctly.
If Across Lite starts up as it should, you will now be able to visit WWW sites
with Across puzzles using WebExplorer and click on the puzzle links to load
the puzzle directly into Across Lite on your computer.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Cut, Copy and Paste ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Across Lite provides the standard OS/2 clipboard operations for editing the
grid in the Edit menu.
Cut
Choosing Cut will clear the letters in the highlighted cells and copy the
letters to the OS/2 clipboard as text. If any letter is a revealed solution,
the letter will be copied to the clipboard but will not be deleted in the grid.
The 'pencil'ed letters will be copied in lower case while 'pen'ed letters will
be copied in upper case.
Copy
Choosing Copy will copy the letters in the highlighted cells to the OS/2
clipboard as text. The 'pencil'ed letters will be copied in lower case while
'pen'ed letters will be copied in upper case.
Paste
The Paste item in the menu will be enabled only when there is a text string
available in the OS/2 clipboard. Choosing this command will paste the text
string in the clipboard into the highlighted cells in the grid.
If the clipboard string is smaller than the number of cells highlighted, the
string is copied from the beginning and the cells remaining at the end of the
string are left unaltered. If the clipboard string is larger than the number of
highlighted cells, the user is given an option of either canceling the
operation or truncating the string to fit. All non-revealed letters in pasted
cells will be overwritten.
The string in the clipboard may have been placed there from within another
program. For this operation to succeed, the string must contain alphabets and
spaces only. Lower case letters in the clipboard string will be appear as
'Pencil'ed and upper case letters will appear as 'Pen'ed.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Troubleshooting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This sections contains suggested troubleshooting procedures for some common
reported and anticipated problems.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. Starting trouble ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
1. Across Lite cannot be started.
If starting using an icon, check the Program page in the settings for the
icon to ensure that the full path name to the executable is correctly
entered. Rename ACROSS.INI if it exists in the directory where the program
exists and try starting the program again. If it starts up, erase the
renamed ACROSS.INI and perform the customization again.
2. Across Lite starts up with either the Main Window or one or more of the
clue lists missing.
Rename ACROSS.INI if it exists in the directory where the program exists
and try starting the program again. If it starts correctly in the default
configuration, erase the renamed ACROSS.INI and perform the customization
again.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.2. File open/save problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
1. Across Lite is unable to read puzzle from a file.
Check for the following possibilities:
The puzzle file does not exist. Check the full path name.
The puzzle file is in Across TEXT format but the filename extension
is not .TXT.
You have no read permissions on the puzzle file. Some networked file
systems may enforce this restriction.
The media on which the puzzle file exists is unreadable due to
hardware problems. Try reading from an alternate location.
The puzzle file is corrupted. Try reading another puzzle file or a
backup file of the problem puzzle if one exists (an automatic backup
is created every time, a puzzle is saved to file and the previous
file exists in the same directory).
2. Read puzzle has missing clues or solution.
Either the file from which the puzzle was read from is corrupted or the
creator of the puzzle has not completed the puzzle.
3. Across Lite is unable to save puzzle to file.
Check for the following possibilities:
Specified directory does not exist.
You have no write privileges on the destination directory (possible
in a networked system) or the media (e.g., floppy disk) is
write-protected.
The destination drive is full.
Destination drive is unavailable (e.g., floppy disk removed from the
drive).
Destination media is unformatted (e.g., an unformatted floppy disk
in the drive).
Destination device has hardware problems.
Current puzzle has not been changed since it was last read in and
the save operation is requested to the same file.
4. Across Lite is unable to save customization across sessions.
Check for write permission in the directory in which the program resides
and check for available disk space for the ACROSS.INI file.
5. Saved puzzle files disappear and are not available at a later date.
If you downloaded the puzzle using Across Lite as a helper application to
your browser, the browser downloads the file into a temporary area and
deletes it later even if you had saved it from inside Across Lite. To have
the puzzle available for later use, you must save the downloaded puzzle
into a different location using the Save As command in the File menu.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.3. Program appearance problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
1. Across Lite starts up with windows that are too big or too small for your
monitor.
The program may be using the customization file ACROSS.INI, that has been
created on a different configuration (different monitor size, resolution,
etc). Either use the frame controls to resize the windows to your
convenience and save the configuration or rename/delete the customization
file and start Across Lite to come up with the default configuration.
2. Even though I customized the layout, it came back up with the
previous/default layout.
Either the Save options item in the Preference menu was not selected after
the customization or the initialization file ACROSS.INI got corrupted or
was moved elsewhere. Restore ACROSS.INI or redo the customization and save
the preferences.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.4. Printing problems ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
1. The print command in the menu and the print button in the tool bar are
disabled.
The creators of the puzzle have an option to not allow printing of puzzles
for copyright reasons. If the creators/publishers set this restriction in
the puzzle file, the items mentioned above will be disabled and you will
not be able to print that puzzle.
2. There are no printers available for selection in the printer selection
dialog windows.
Ensure that a printer is installed and accessible for use from OS/2. Check
if the printer can be used from any other program. Refer to OS/2 manual
for information on installing a printer if the printer cannot be used from
any program.
3. Across Lite takes a very long time before sending the puzzle to the
printer.
The time taken to compute a layout dependes on the configuration of your
computer. Ensure that all the default fonts that came with the Operating
Systems are correctly installed.
4. The printed output is too small or too big for the page.
Across Lite tries to compute the best layout possible for a given page
size and orientation. Some puzzles may be just too big to fit in a single
page. Or the printer driver for your printer may not be providing the
correct information to the program. Try the following actions:
If possible, manually select the right page size and orientation on
the printer.
Use the print items selection box and multiple print commands to
distribute the puzzle over two or more pages.
If available for your printer, use the scale option in the printer
setup dialogs to scale the puzzle to fit in the selected page.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You may enter the full path and filename here or use the file, directory and
drive lists below to select a file. Across Puzzles have a default extension of
.PUZ. Across puzzles in TEXT format must have the extension .TXT and file type
