  2. THIS PROGRAM IS IN BETA TEST OF PRE-RELEASE CODE.
  3.  
  4. FileStar/2 has been in development for approximately one year. It has been 
  5. subjected to limited beta tests to date. Testing has been thorough but 
  6. limited to a small sample of hardware. However, it should not be hardware 
  7. sensitive. It has been tested under OS/2 v2.1, 2.11 and the Performance 
  8. Beta and performs identically on all three versions, including starting either
  9. WinOS2 or Windows programs.
  10.  
  11. The author believes the software to be relatively free of bugs and safe to 
  12. use. However, you must read the MUSTREAD.TXT file and agree to the 
  13. conditions stated therein prior to using the software.
  14.  
  15. The pre-release code is being made available at this time for wide beta 
  16. tests. Tests on networks are of major interest. Any user that encounters 
  17. incompatibility or other issues or bugs is strongly encouraged to report the 
  18. circumstances to the author through CompuServe.
  19.  
  20. The beta release is distributed with on-line help only. Users should read 
  21. the "General Help" section, and its hyper-text links, prior to evaluating 
  22. the program. There are features, such as popup menus, that might 
  23. otherwise not be used in the best manner for the program and could affect 
  24. your opinion as to useability. The on-line help is also pre-release and 
  25. comments on its content are welcome.

  27. FileStar/2 is also distributed without an "install" program. It is simple 
  28. to install and the installation details are provided both in the on-line help 
  29. and in the file INSTALL.TXT. A PM install program is planned for the 
  30. release version.

  32. ISSUES AND THE FUTURE
  33.  
  34. The following are issues that the author would like feedback on:
  35.  
  36. 1.  File Drag and Drop Implementation. This version does not drag and drop 
  37. WITHIN Filestar like WPS folders. You cannot pick up an unselected file. 
  38. This was intentional to keep one from dragging the wrong file(s). Also, the 
  39. entire file window is an acceptable drop zone. The files in the window 
  40. WILL NOT accept a dropped file. Again, intentional. Just made finding a drop 
  41. zone easier. If pick up and drop is in same window, nothing happens. The 
  42. author perfers this implementation to that of the WPS. If users complain, 
  43. an option may be implemented.

  45. 2.  Drive Scan. Drives are scanned into a file and this file is normally used 
  46. when changing drives. The entire tree is read in on each drive change. This 
  47. was done for quicker drive changes. However, this does requires the user 
  48. to initiate a drive rescan whenever directory changes are made outside of 
  49. FileStar. Other methods have been tried and the best alternative seems to be 
  50. to only partially read the directory tree real time on each drive change and 
  51. then read the rest when a directory is selected. This appears to be the 
  52. method used by the Drives Object and other file managers as well. Probably 
  53. will go with the option of either.

  55. The following are planned, but not promised, improvement changes:
  56.  
  57.     a. Drag and drop of directories.
  58.     b. Implement a scheme where both directory trees could be made 
  59.            visible simulatenously.         
  60.     c. Undelete capability.
  61.     d. File association support.
  62.     e. Extended attributes capability.
  63.     f. Ability to create program objects.
  64.     g. Compare file lists in file windows.
  65.     h. Additional archiver support.
  66.     i. Configurable Button Bar.

  68. SPECIAL REGISTRATION OFFER
  69.  
  70. The author is also interested in a measure of general acceptance of the 
  71. program. Therefore, during the beta test period the program may be 
  72. registered for the reduced fee of $20. The registration will be valid 
  73. through version 2.0 after which a small fee may be necessary for upgrade.

  75. The beta test period will end on 15 October, 1994. The above registration 
  76. offer expires on that date.
