  11. This archive file contains two programs:
  12.  
  13. ***WSedit:***
  14. Wordstar 4 like Freeware Editor which reads Wordstar 4-7 and 
  15. ASCII (ISO and IBM codepage) and writes Wordstar 4 and ASCII 
  16. format. 
  17.  
  18. ***WSformat:***
  19. A Shareware formatting and printing program for Wordstar and 
  20. WSedit files. 
  21.  
  22. Running the two programs simultaneously offers you the 
  23. look-and-feel of a single program: "Write&Set".
  24.  
  25. Write&Set is a full-featured wordprocessing program with 
  26. hyphenation, contents creation, footnotes, index, embedding 
  27. graphics and a lot of more. It is an alternative concept of word 
  28. processing for people who don't like Winword-like programs. Word 
  29. processing with Write&Set divides the job of producing a document 
  30. in two parts: editing unformatted text and - later - formatting 
  31. and printing. These two parts of the job are done by separate 
  32. programs: WSedit is the 'editor' and WSformat the 'typesetter'. 
  33. This concept simplifies word processing and enables you compiling 
  34. a single document with hundreds of pages without any problems. 
  35. Nevertheless, both programs are designed to work together like 
  36. dialog windows in a single program.
  37.  
  38. If you do not register WSformat and wait a while, you are no more
  39. able to format documents which are larger than 4 pages. This is
  40. the only Shareware limitation.
  41.  
  42. This archive file contains a third program: the Hypermake
  43. commandline compiler (www.hypermake.com). You can execute this
  44. program from the WSformat menu (Make - RTF, Make - HTML) to
  45. convert WS files to RTF (Rich text format) and HTML (for web
  46. pages). The WSformat registration key can be also used here.

  48. ----------Installation----------
  49.  
  50. Unpack the archive file to a new directory, e.g:
  51. C:\Programs\WriteSet
  52.  
  53. The two programs WSedit and WSformat are now located in 
  54. subdirectories:
  55. C:\Programs\WriteSet\WSedit
  56. C:\Programs\WriteSet\WSformat
  57.  
  58. Now simply run the INSTALL program in the WriteSet directory. 
  59. INSTALL creates file associations and program icons on the 
  60. desktop (and in the Windows Start Menu) for both programs. 
  61. INSTALL does not copy files.
  62.  
  63. If you use an old version of WSedit and WSedit crashes while
  64. starting, please delete the WSedit.dta user settings file.

  66. ----------Usage-----------
  67.  
  68. WSedit is an editor which can be used like other editors. In 
  69. addition to CUA editor commands like Ctrl-Ins for "paste marked 
  70. block into clipboard", WSedit supports all Wordstar Ctrl Commands 
  71. like Ctrl-KB "mark beginning of block". To get an overview, press 
  72. Ctrl-J. "Ctrl" is abbreviated ^. If you read and write files with
  73. file extension TXT, WSedit is an ASCII text editor. If you read
  74. and write files with the extension WS or FMT, WSedit is compatible
  75. to the Wordstar (DOS) file format.

  77. The WSformat 'format' function reads the raw-text WS file edited 
  78. by WSedit and writes an FMT (formatted) file. It does not modify 
  79. the WS file in any way. In the FMT file, which can be also viewed 
  80. using WSedit, the right margin is now fixed, the page breaks are 
  81. apparent, and words at the end of the line which require 
  82. hyphenation are displayed accordingly.

  84. WSformat let you preview and print your FMT file.

  88. WSedit has got the following properties:

  90. - native OS/2 and Windows, later also Linux, of course supporting 
  91.   long filenames
  92. - reading WS4 and WS5-WS7, writing WS4 format
  93. - CUA key support
  94. - detail behaviour appropriate to WS4/5
  95. - holding different user settings dependent on the file extension 
  96.   of the text file
  97. - when working with an unformatted file, text is reformatted if 
  98.   the window width is changed (word wrap)
  99. - switching between different screen fonts (for the whole 
  100.   document)
  101. - no 80 column limit
  102. - paragraph formatting with soft characters ("snow characters") 
  103.   like Wordstar
  104. - nearly no file size limit (there seems to be a limit at 
  105.   approximately 20 MB)
  106. - supports workgroups (one person has write access, the others 
  107.   can only read)
  108. - contents tree in a separate window like a directory tree to 
  109.   navigate in large documents
  110. - command highlightning
  111. - marking lines with Hard Return and Soft Return in the rightmost 
  112.   column
  113. - multi undo, undo slider window
  114. - TXT Import and Export (ANSI and DOS)
  115. - highlightning spell-checking function where you can let analyse 
  116.   your own already spell-checked files to get a personal 
  117.   dictionary
  118. - translation functionality if you download separate translation

  125. ---- WSformat program description ------
  126.  
  127. WSformat is a formatting and printing program for Wordstar (DOS) 
  128. files.
  129.  
  130. Wordstar Compatiblity: WSformat accepts all Wordstar (DOS) files, 
  131. but does not support all Wordstar DOS functions, i.e., those 
  132. which were added after Wordstar Version 4. Instead, some extended 
  133. functions (such as generating tables of contents or handling 
  134. footnotes) are implemented in a WSformat-specific way. Basic 
  135. Wordstar 5-7 'symmetrical sequences' are recognized (indentions, 
  136. for example).

  138. WSformat supports hyphenation, the creation of end notes and 
  139. footnotes, generation of tables of contents and indexes, line 
  140. drawing, embedding graphics in text and allows conditional 
  141. statements. In contrast to the older DOS Wordstar versions, 
  142. document preview and printing use functions provided by the 
  143. Windows (or OS/2) operating systems. This means you have access 
  144. to the printers and type fonts which are installed on the 
  145. operating system.

  147. The WSformat command syntax is very similar to that of Hypermake. 
  148. From a WS file, Hypermake will generate an equivalent file in 
  149. RTF, Winhelp, HTML, IBM Help or Microsoft HTML-Help format.

  153. When starting WSedit and WSformat the first time, both programs
  154. query the user language. WSedit is completely translated to
  155. german language; in WSformat, only error messages are translated
  156. yet.

  158. ---- The first steps -----

  160. After running INSTALL, take a look at the WSedit and WSformat 
  161. help files. In the WSformat docu "Installation" chapter, it is 
  162. described how to make user and language specific settings, e.g. 
  163. loading the hyphenation algorithm for your language. Both WSedit 
  164. and WSformat documentations are available in the WS file format, 
  165. see DocuSrc directory. You are encouraged to format, preview 
  166. and print these files.

  170. If you are neither familiar with Write&Set nor with Wordstar,
  171. I recommend the Tutorial: Open the TUTORIAL folder, run WSformat,
  172. drop the file 1_FormattingPrinting.ws to the WSformat dropdown
  173. field and press the "unform edit" button.
