Lesson 5: Font Selection
.lh10
Fonts are selected by using specific dot commands. Fonts are represented by a ì
font letter which is a shortcut for a specific font description. Font ì
letters are case-sensitive, so you can use A to Z and a to z for a total of 52 ì
fonts.
The font definition is stored in an ASCII file FONTS.INI which can be viewed ì
and edited from the WSformat menu bar. Enter "Settings - Font Definition". ì
Please view this file.
The file is self-explanatory. It is best if you do not change the "..Fonts ì
available on every system" section. You can then exchange WS files with other ì
Write&Set users and the fonts will be the same on both computers. The file was ì
generated when running WSformat the first time and is made for your specific ì
computer installation.
Default font values
Activate the WSformat Settings Notebook: Click on the WSformat menu item ì
"Settings", then on "Settings Notebook", page "Format". Here you can enter the ì
default font letter for the normal and alternate fonts.
Alternate font
The "Alternate font" is the font which occurs when you have set the "Alternate ì
Font" character in front of a paragraph:
To select an alternate font in WSedit, move the cursor to the beginning of a ì
paragraph and select the menu entry "Emphasize" - "Alternate Font" or press ì
Ctrl-PA. The "Alternate Font" is valid up to the end of the paragraph, that ì
means until you press Return.
Select another font
To change a font within your running text, use the "Select Font" command, ì
which is .SF; for example:
.SFG
The normal font is now Helvetica 12 or Arial 12 (depending on your system).
.SAM
To change the alternate font, use ".AF" instead of ".SF". ".AF" alone does not ì
have any effect. It only means that future paragraphs beginning with the ì
alternate font character will use the newly specified font.
This is the Courier 12 font with a fixed character width (non-proportional ì
font).
Dialog window for selecting a font
If you don't remember font letters, then enter
.SF
and double-click it. If WSformat is running, the "Insert Dot commands" window ì
opens and you can select a font from the dropdown box.
If you have already used a ".SF" command and want the definition of the font ì
letter, simply move the mouse over the ".SF" command. A small window opens ì
with the name of the font and a font sample text. But this also only works if ì
WSformat is running, because this functionality is part of WSformat, not ì
WSedit.
Inserting ".SF" without a font letter changes the font to the default value ì
which is defined in the Settings Notebook.
Fonts for headings
It is not necessary to use the ".SF" command for highlighting headings. ì
Heading fonts can be defined separately. The subject of the next chapter is ì
headings.
