HISTORY.906 1 Jun 08, 1999
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Revision history
Detailed revision histories for the programs are only maintained for the
last three releases. After that, you get the major revision summaries only
for the next three releases or so. In any case, if your version of any of
these programs is more than a year old, your version is definitely
obsolete. Hop onto the Web--preferably to the official site at
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/2414
or find through http://www.erols.com/waynesof
--or e-mail me or something and get the new version!
Can't remember that site address? Either can I. Remember
http://www.erols.com/waynesof instead and use the link to the GeoCities
site from there. (The page names are, unfortunately, case-sensitive.)
-------------- (full detail; revisions made 1 to 3 releases ago)
Release 906 (June 1999):
BFIND, CHANGE, and CONVERT: I modified the documentation to mention that
&Hxx hexadecimal codes don't work from the command line under Windows NT.
FIXTEXT: Command wasn't taking /Iinitfile as the default for the lookup
table; fixed that. [Replaces fixtx903.zip]
PAGINATE: Added a section in the documentation on the COUNTRY command in
DOS to explain why "DATE=mm/dd/yy" always shows up as "DATE=mm-dd-yy"
unless someone's overridden your country settings from the default (which
is the US settings).
Release 903 (March 1999):
Source code?: I get roughly a request per month for my source code.
Ninety percent of the people demand (!) that I provide it to them free.
While I find this cute and while I didn't write these programs for money,
I didn't spend thousands of hours coding them to give it all away either.
I'd be willing to sell the source code for any of my programs for $1,000
(US) per program. This applies to AV, BFIND, COPSINCE, DATES, DIRCOMP,
DIRTOTAL, EUMAIL, FILL, FILUPDAT, FIXTEXT, FORTUNE, HTMSTRIP, PAGINATE,
READINIT, or TXTABLE. This would include the code I wrote on an "as is"
basis but would not include the source code to Thomas G Hanlin III's
subroutines. Source code is not available at all for CHANGE, CONVERT,
READ, and READY.
As I say, I'm not in this for money nor did I write the programs to give
them away. Do I expect anyone to buy these programs? Realistically, no
individual would buy them but some companies might. If you'd like to
pursue this, please contact me at waynesof@erols.com
Wish list: I dropped the wish list this time around. I'm glad I wrote
them but I'd prefer doing other things instead of programming now.
E-mail to waynesof@erols.com still useful and I'll be fixing obvious bugs
and such but, in general, I won't be adding new features to these
programs in the future.
DIRCOMP: Added /+Ssubdir and /-Ssubdir parameters, making /Nfilespec and
HISTORY.906 2 Jun 08, 1999
/Xfilespec parameters exclusive to regular files instead of
subdirectories. [Replaces dirco812.zip]
DIRTOTAL: Fixed another problem with processing on really big drives;
before, it would choke if there were more than about 32,000
subdirectories. [Replaces dirto812.zip]
EUMAIL: /HEAD=D now provides a date even for outgoing message folders.
FIXTEXT: I forgot to include FIXTEXT.ISO with the ZIP file. Corrected.
Release 812 (December 1998):
Year 2000 compliance?: Hell if I know. I suspect some of the programs
will have problems but most will sail through. Given that they're free
and they're DOS programs, I'm not willing to spend too much time worrying
about it right now. I also have no real clue as to how many people use
which programs (I don't require any sort of registration) so I'm not sure
what's worth devoting very limited time resources to. If someone wants
to pay me for a specific program, I'll worry about it advance but
otherwise I'll be tinkering with the code over the next year (like I did
with DATES this time) and then expect to have to devote some more serious
time come January 1 2000 for the routines that people still use.
Most routines: I found out the "/?HEX" gets translated automatically by
WindowsNT (and possibly other Windows operating systems) as "/?H" so I
changed the "/?HEX" parameter (which shows you the translations for hex
codes) to "/?HEX".
DATES: Added /D0 as a valid /Ddays parameter. This was added for people
who wanted to dummy out sections of their date file. I've also changed
how the program interprets two-digit years. Previously, it presumed any
two-digit year was for the current century. This wasn't a major hassle
for most things except the age of something dated 01/01/99 was presumed
to be 1999 instead of 1899 and ages got funky. It becomes more of an
issue once the year 2000 hits. Someone born on 01/01/03 would have been
presumed to be -3 years old in the year 2000 (being born in 2003). With
the change, these people will be presumed to be born in 1903 and they'll
be 97 years old. This change may force people using the /FUTURE setting
to recode using four-digit years but that's probably best anyway.
[Replaces dates806.zip]
DIRCOMP: Fixed a problem with using /S in addition to /Nfilespec parms.
Also fixed up some inconsistencies in the documentation. [Replaces
dirco809.zip]
DIRTOTAL: Added /-LIST as a synonym for /NL. [Replaces dirto809.zip]
FIXTEXT: Added a warning in the documentation about trying to process
like-named files with a @listfile parameter. Had the same problem with
filtered characters redefined as other filtered characters (see HTMSTRIP
note).
HTMSTRIP: Fixed a problem with filters (if you defined a character1 to
be character2 [for example, "A" to be "B"] and then you also had
character2 defined to be character3 [for example, "B" to be "C"],
sometimes the program would give you character3 for character1). Added
an ASCII character table (ASCII.TXT) to the ZIP file. Fixed a problem
HISTORY.906 3 Jun 08, 1999
with /-TABLE not respecting /BORDER=c settings. Also modified a few
entity references in HTMSTRIP.INI. [Replaces htmst806.zip]
-------------- (kind of terse; revisions made 4 to 6 releases ago)
Release 809 (September 1998):
DIRCOMP, DIRTOTAL, and FILL: Fixed problems related to large files and
discs.
MOZ: Dropped.
Release 806 (June 1998):
COPSINCE, DIRCOMP, DIRTOTAL, EUMAIL, FORTUNE, and READ: No longer
updating on the regular external sites.
DATES: Added checks for things like "first weekday" and "second weekend
day".
Release 803 (March 1998):
HTMSTRIP: Fixed up a number of things.
