  91. If Netscape Navigator 2.02E or later is installed on your computer,
  92. nppdfos2.dll will be installed in \Netscape\plugins. If you have
  93. more than one copy of Netscape on your computer, it will install into
  94. the plug_ins directory of the first copy of Netscape found. The installer 
  95. will also place one copy of the Netscape plug-in in the directory 
  96. containing the Acrobat Reader in the browser subdirectory. If you would 
  97. like to use the Acrobat Reader with a different copy of Netscape 
  98. Navigator copy nppdfos2.dll to its plugins directory.
  99.  
  100. Note: Acrobat puts an entry in the OS2.INI file in the PMWP_ASSOC_TYPE
  101. section for "Acrobat Document". It also creates an "Adobe Acrobat" section.
  102. These sections are both removed during uninstall. The only file left after
  103. an uninstall will be the ACROINST.LOG file in the \OS2\INSTALL directory.
  104.  
  105. Some users have reported the installer hanging. We have been
  106. able to recreate this on Warp 4, and it stems from the 
  107. SysCreateObject() call. If your install seems to stop making 
  108. progress, cancel, then take the option to delete the files 
  109. you have already copied. Reboot and try again. This seems to 
  110. be a problem with the Workplace shell that can only be fixed 
  111. by rebooting.
  112.  
  113. If you are running 4OS2 version 2.0, you won't be able to
  114. execute the install program. Newer versions work correctly. To
  115. work around this problem, start a regular command shell by 
  116. typing "CMD" from your 4os2 command prompt. Then do a install.
  117. This should work properly.
  118.  
  119. You can't execute the installer from a path that has spaces in 
  120. it. This is a problem with the IBM installer.
  121.  
  122. If you had trouble installing, check the ACROINST.LOG file in the 
  123. c:\os2\install directory before contacting Adobe.
  124.  
  125. Installer Utility:
  126. -----------------
  127.  
  128. We have included a REXX script called ACROWPS.CMD. This program
  129. can be run from the Acrobat Reader directory if you need to 
  130. install the workplace shell icons and SOM DLL manually. Acrobat
  131. must already be unarchived completely into its directory for 
  132. this program to work. 
  133.  
  134. It can also be used to remove the Acrobat folder and deregister
  135. the SOM class. Simply type "ACROWPS REMOVE" to accomplish this.
  136.  
  137. Plug-in Names 
  138. -------------
  139. Removing plug-ins from the Reader's plug_ins directory can improve 
  140. performance and reduce the  memory required to use the Reader.  When 
  141. removing plug-ins, refer to the following list of the Reader plug-ins' 
  142. file names and their functionality:
  143.  
  144. aform32.api    Forms plug-in
  145. ewhos2.api     External Window Handler (for web)
  146. hlspm.api      highlight server (for web search)
  147. wwwlnkpm.api   Weblink plug-in
  148.           
  149. Acrobat for Windows users:
  150. --------------------------
  151. Those who are also using a Windows version of Acrobat may find that when they 
  152. double-click on an Acrobat file in the OS/2 Desktop or Drives objects, 
  153. the Windows Acrobat program launches instead of the OS/2 Acrobat Reader. 
  154. This is because the Windows program object is still associated first with 
  155. PDF (portable document format) files. To set up your system to use the OS/2 
  156. Acrobat reader by default, do the following:
  157.           
  158. a]  Locate the program object for your Windows Acrobat Reader 
  159.     or Exchange program. This may be "nested" in a folder on your 
  160.     desktop called "WIN-OS/2 Groups". In this folder, look for a 
  161.     folder called "Adobe Acrobat" or "Adobe Acrobat 2.0". Inside one 
  162.     of these folders, look for a program called "Reader" or "Ex-
  163.     change". If present, right click on the program icon using the 
  164.     right mouse button (left mouse button if you set the mouse to be 
  165.     left-handed), then click on settings. Click on the notebook page 
  166.     that says "Association". If you see a reference to "*.PDF" in the 
  167.     list box entitled "Current Names", click on that reference, then 
  168.     click on the "Remove" button next to the list box. This will 
  169.     remove the *PDF association to your Windows Acrobat viewer. 
  170. b]  If you _didn't_ find the association in a program object 
  171.     in one of these folders, yet the Windows viewer still launches 
  172.     when you double-click on PDF files, try searching your computer 
  173.     for the actual executable (.EXE) file for the Windows viewer. 
  174.     This will either be called "ACROREAD.EXE", "ACROEXCH.EXE", 
  175.     "ACROEX16.EXE", or "ACRORD16.EXE". You can search for this by 
  176.     right clicking on your OS/2 Desktop, then selecting "Find" from 
  177.     the popup menu. Type "ACRO*.EXE" in the "Name" field, then make 
  178.     sure the "Start Folder" has "<All Local Drives>" selected. Also 
  179.     make sure that "Search All Subfolders" has a checkbox next to it. 
  180.     Now click on the Find button. When this operation has completed, 
  181.     you'll see a list of files that match this name. (NOTE: One of 
  182.     the files named "ACROREAD.EXE is your OS/2 viewer.) Check the 
  183.     Associations page for each file to make sure that "*PDF" is not 
  184.     listed in the "Current Names" listbox for that file. 
  185.     
  186.     If you have done this properly, your Windows viewer should not 
  187.     appear the next time you double click on an Acrobat document. To 
  188.     insure this is the case, right click on a "PDF" file, then click 
  189.     on the arrow next to the "Open" item. The only menu item you 
  190.     should see is "Acrobat Reader".
  191.     
  192.     Note: If you want to have a choice on the open menu for PDF files 
  193.     to allow you to open _either_ the OS/2 program or the Windows 
  194.     program, you may re-add the association to "*PDF" to the Windows 
  195.     program icon (not the executable file) at this time. The OS/2 
  196.     Viewer will still be the default association.
  197.  
  198.  
  199. Getting Help
  200. ============
  201.  
  202.           The Acrobat home page can be found at 
  203.           http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/ on the internet. From here, 
  204.           you may download all the currently available versions of the 
  205.           Acrobat Reader. Look to these Web pages for up-to-date information 
  206.           on Acrobat and the Acrobat Reader.

  209. Reporting Problems
  210. ==================
  211.  
  212.           Please do not send E-mail directly to Adobe concerning problems 
  213.           with the Acrobat Reader for OS/2. The proper way to report prob-
  214.           lems regarding Acrobat are through the online problem form on our 
  215.           web site. The current URL for this site is:

  218.              BEFORE you report problems, PLEASE make sure that the problem 
  219.           you are experiencing is not already a known problem. You can do 
  220.           this by first checking the list at the end of this file, and also 
  221.           by checking out our list of known problems on the web, available 
  222.           from the Acrobat home page, or by linking directly to 
  223.                 http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/knownproblems.html

  225.              The bug report page has a form with many entry fields on it. 
  226.           Make sure to complete this form as completely as possible; ESPE-
  227.           CIALLY the field for "Operating System". That is the only way we 
  228.           will be sure to get the right problems to the right people!

  230. Setting Up for use with Netscape for OS/2
  231. =========================================
  232.  
  233. These are the directions for installing Acrobat for use with 
  234. Netscape Navigator version 2.02E:
  235.   
  236. a] Install Netscape
  237. b] Install Acrobat
  238.  
  239. That's it. Acrobat will register itself as a helper in Netscape,
  240. as well as copy a plug-in file into the Netscape "PLUGINS"
  241. directory. If you have more than one copy of Netscape Navigator
  242. on your system, insure that the plugin was installed into the
  243. plugins directory for the proper one.
  244.  
  245. If you choose to install Netscape after Acrobat, you must copy
  246. the Acrobat Netscape plug-in manually into the 
  247. "NETSCAPE\PLUGINS" directory. The Acrobat plugin is located
  248. in Acrobat's browser directory; normally:
  249.  
  250.     C:\ACROBAT3\READOS2\BROWSER\NPPDFOS2.DLL
  251.  
  252. Copy this file into C:\NETSCAPE\PLUGINS, and you will have 
  253. completed the installation.
  254.  
  255. New features for Netscape PDF browsing:
  256. ---------------------------------------
  257. The following tools have been added to the Acrobat Toolbar displayed when
  258. viewing PDF files inside the Netscape Navigator window:
  259.  
  260. - A "copy" tool, which appears to the left of the "hand" tool; it's
  261. icon shows two pages (a page and its copy)
  262.  
  263. - A "select text" tool, which appears to the right of the "zoom out"
  264. (magnifying glass minus) tool; its icon shows the letters "abc" in a
  265. selection box
  266.  
  267. - A "find" tool, which appears to the right of the "fit width" tool;
  268. its icon is a pair of binoculars
  269.  
  270. - A "find again" tool, which appears to the right of the "find" tool;
  271. its icon is a small pair of binoculars under a curved arrow
  272.  
  273.  
  274. When viewing PDF documents within a browser window...
  275.  
  276.  
  277. To copy text (for pasting elsewhere):
  278.  
  279. - click on the "select text" tool
  280.  
  281. - select the desired text
  282.  
  283. - click on the "copy" tool
  284.  
  285. - when you are done selecting text, click on the "hand" button to
  286. return to browsing
  287.  
  288.  
  289. To find a text string
  290.  
  291. - click on the "find" tool
  292.  
  293. - enter the desired text in the Find dialog
  294.  
  295. - click on the Find dialog's "Find" button
  296.  
  297. or

  299. - click on the "find again" tool to find another occurance of the text
  300.  
  301. Note: Finding text may take a while if the PDF file must be retrieved
  302. from the Web server.  
  303.  
  304. Select, Copy, Find, and Find Again must be done using the tools on the
  305. Acrobat toobar.  The "Copy", "Select All", and "Find..." menu items on
  306. your browser's "Edit" menu will not invoke the
  307. corresponding command on PDF
  308. documents.
  309.  
  310. Setting up WebExplorer
  311. ======================
  312.  
  313. Note: IBM seems to be moving away from Web Explorer and towards
  314. Netscape as the standard web browser for OS/2. We are providing
  315. directions here for Web Explorer, but suggest that you move to
  316. using Netscape for OS/2. This offers several advantages to
  317. WebExplorer, including rendering PDF inside the browser, and 
  318. browsing hot-links to web sites from inside PDF files. The
  319. latest version of Netscape can be downloaded from:
  320.        http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp/
  321.                 
  322. These are the changes that need to be made to run Acrobat Reader 
  323. as a helper application to the IBM WebExplorer:
  324.  
  325.  a]     Set the WebExplorer ini file (EXPLORE.INI) mailcap and 
  326.  extmap variables to the full paths of your existing or new user 
  327.  extension-map and mime type files (i.e. EXPLORE.EXT and 
  328.  EXPLORE.CAP).
  329.     The EXPLORE.INI file can be found in your ETC directory. To 
  330.  figure out where your ETC directory is, edit your OS/2 config.sys 
  331.  file and search for ETC:
  332.  
  333.  E c:\config.sys (if the OS2 directory is on a different drive 
  334.  letter, use the appropriate letter).
  335.  
  336.      You should see a line like this: 
  337.  
  338.  SET ETC=C:\MPTN\ETC
  339.  
  340.      Change to this directory to edit your EXPLORE.INI. You should 
  341.  see something like this:
  342.  
  343.  [advanced]

  372.     If you already had existing files listed , do not change 
  373.  EXPLORE.INI, but for the next two steps, simply add the informa-
  374.  tion to your existing files.
  375.  (Note: Do not edit the [viewers] section of EXPLORE.INI)
  376.  
  377.  
  378.  b]     Modify or create your user "MIME/application map" or 
  379.  mailcap file (ie. EXPLORE.CAP).  Create it in your ETC directory 
  380.  if one doesn't already exist.  If it does exist, then place the 
  381.  following line into it:
  382.  
  383.  application/pdf; C:\ACROBAT3\READOS2\ACROREAD.EXE %s
  384.  
  385.  
  386.  Modify or create your user "extension map" or extmap file (i.e. 
  387.  EXPLORE.EXT).  Create it in the ETC directory if one doesn't 
  388.  already exist.  If it does exist, then place the following line 
  389.  into it:
  390.  
  391.  
  392.  application/pdf      pdf app
  393.  
  394.  Note: the "app" is a bug fix for a problem in the WebExplorer.
  395.  
  396.  c]  That's it. When you start your WebExplorer, any links to 
  397.  PDF files should activate Acrobat now.
  398.  
  399. Info for Administrators
  400. =======================
  401.  
  402. How to Install Acrobat Reader 3.0 from a LAN Server
  403. ---------------------------------------------------
  404.  
  405. If you wish to install Acrobat Reader 3.0 on several
  406. workstations, you can install it over the LAN.
  407. Follow these steps:
  408.   o Create a directory on the LAN server to store the Acrobat Reader 3.0
  409.     files, for example:
  410.        MKDIR J:\ACROBAT
  411.   o Unarchive the Acrobat Reader 3.0 self extracting archive program
  412.     into a network directory using InfoZip's unzip:
  413.        UNZIP ARO2E30.EXE
  414.   o Install Acrobat Reader 3.0 by typing INSTALL from a command prompt. Note: you must
  415.     have the network path mapped to a drive letter to do this.
  416.  
  417. How to Create a Response File (CID Install)
  418. -------------------------------------------
  419.  
  420. Response files are used to provide data that is normally entered manually
  421. when Acrobat Reader 3.0 is installed. To invoke installer with response
  422. file, see section "Using Command Line Parameters" below.
  423.  
  424. This product supports the following keywords:
  425.  
  426. FILE                 Destination directory for Acrobat
  427. CFGUPDATE            Always set to MANUAL (we don't modify config.sys)
  428. OVERWRITE            YES or NO- overwrite previously installed Acrobat
  429. SAVEBACKUP           Always set to NO; Acrobat doesn't make use of backups
  430. DELETEBACKUP         Always set to YES. 
  431.

  447. Using Command Line Parameters
  448. -----------------------------
  449.  
  450. If no parameters are specified when the executable file is started,
  451. the installation is attended.
  452. To install in an unattended mode, the /X parameter must be used.
  453.  
  454. If the value of any of the parameters contains spaces,
  455. use double quotes to enclose the value.
  456.  
  457. Values can be upper or lower case.
  458. Parameters can be in any order.
  459.  
  460. INSTALL /A:<action>           Default is install. D will delete.
  461.         /L:<xpos,ypos>        Position on screen
  462.         /L1:<error log>       Output file for errors
  463.         /L2:<history log>     Output file for history
  464.         /R:<response file>    _Full_ path to response file.
  465.         /X                    Unattended mode.
  466.  
  467. Example:
  468.    To install Acrobat using CID from a network drive "j" containing
  469. the unarchived installer in the "AR" directory
  470.  
  471. J:\AR\INSTALL /L1:J:\AR\AMY.LOG /L2:J:\AR\AMY.LOG /X /R:J:\AR\RESPONSE.RSP
  472.  
  473. Note: This can easily be done by a telnet to the user's OS/2 machine.
  474.  
  475.  
  476. Known Problems and Issues
  477. =========================
  478.    We can't stress enough the importance of being up to the latest
  479. video drivers and printer drivers for your system. Warp 3.0 users
  480. should upgrade to Fixpak 26, which fixes many printing issues.
  481.  
  482. General Problems:
  483. -----------------
  484. -When multiple links to PDF files are opened simultaneously from 
  485. the WebExplorer, some PDF files may be left over in the TMP 
  486. directory after WebExplorer completes. It is a good idea to clean 
  487. out your "TMP" directory (as defined in config.sys) from time to 
  488. time.
  489. -Custom background color is implemented for full screen viewing, 
  490. but requires Fixpak 17 or later to work, since it uses a newer 
  491. OS/2 custom control. We recommend Fixpak 26, since Fixpak 17
  492. introduced many printing problems.
  493. -File Open dialog will not show files such as "two.dots.pdf".
  494. This is an OS/2 problem. Type in "*" instead of "*.pdf" to get
  495. a list of all files.
  496. -The Select Graphics tool may fail to copy some text parts of an
  497. image to the clipboard. Use the Select Text tool to copy text, 
  498. and the Select Graphics tool for graphics.
  499.  
  500. Printing Problems:
  501. ------------------
  502.     Due to many problems with printer drivers that shipped with
  503. Warp version 3.0, Adobe suggests that Acrobat users update their
  504. OS/2 system with Fixpak 26 or later. This will solve many, if not
  505. all of your printing problems. Make sure you update the printer
  506. drivers themselves too; this is not automatic with the upgrade
  507. utility. Adobe will not support printing on systems that have not 
  508. been brought up to this level. This is not to say that you won't 
  509. be able to work around these problems without the fixpak- just that 
  510. we can not support those configurations. In some cases, updating 
  511. the printer driver and other systems components such as PMMERGE.DLL 
  512. may work.
  513.     Those who have upgraded to Warp version 4.0 should not
  514. experience most of these printing problems.
  515.  
  516. -If you are using the LASERJET.DRV driver, make sure you have selected 
  517. "Use Large Buffers" in the driver options page when this option is 
  518. available for your printer. Also make sure that HPGL/2 is turned off.
  519.  NOTE: These options can also speed up your printing times by tenfold! 
  520. -Printing complex PDF to non-postscript printers may require lots 
  521. of swapper space, especially if you are using a higher resolution
  522. such as 600 DPI. If you plan on doing this, try to make sure you have
  523. 150Mb or more free. You may need to switch the drive that OS/2 uses
  524. for its swapfile. You can find out which drive is your swapper drive 
  525. by checking the "SWAPPATH" setting in config.sys.
  526. -Printing to HP Laserjet 4Plus and some other HP printers may cause 
  527. some images to print upside down, especially with Laserjet driver 
  528. version 30.456. This is prevalent with people who are using Warp and 
  529. have applied Fixpak 17 but haven't applied Fixpak 26.
  530.     This is a bug in the IBM LASERJET.DRV driver and some of the OS/2
  531. system DLLs.  We suggest using the PostScript driver with these printers, 
  532. or upgrade to Fixpak 26 (recommended).
  533. -Scaling when printing to PostScript printers is broken for 
  534. Operating system versions prior to Version 3 Fixpak 26. If you need
  535. to scale print jobs to a PostScript printer, please upgrade.
  536. -If you are using the Original OMNI Driver from Warp 3.0 (version
  537. 30.437), this will also cause upside down printing. This is the
  538. driver used for HP Deskjets and many other printers. Upgrade your
  539. driver and you should have no trouble printing. The latest driver
  540. would be 30.509 or later. This is available on ftp.software.ibm.com
  541. and the filename is omnidrv.zip.
  542. -When printing to HP Laserjet printers, the default options 
  543. should be changed for better performance. The option "HPGL/2" 
  544. should be turned ON, and the option "Use large buffers" should 
  545. also be turned on. This does not match the defaults.
  546. -Printing to a Unix printer (using lprportd) produces no output.
  547. Please use LPRMON instead to map Unix printer to a local port.
  548. -If printing to an IBM NULL compatible printer, try using the 
  549. Epson Generic printer (OMNI.DRV). Select the printer based on
  550. the number of dot matrix pins and columns on the printer.
  551. -Printing to a local printer may produce no output, unless you have
  552. upgraded to Fixpak 26. We have seen this on Laserjets.
  553. -Printing using the IBMPCL5 driver doesn't work properly. Some
  554. text is showing odd colored backgrounds. This is still broken
  555. with the latest driver, unfortunately. Lexmark is working on 
  556. the problem right now. It is possible sometimes to get the driver to
  557. work by selecting 24 bit color in "Bitmap Format" field in the 
  558. "advanced options". Insure that "GL/2" is off (default setting).
  559.    If you are using the Lexmark Optra-C or another printer that uses
  560. IBMPCL5, instead try using LASERJET.DRV by adding that driver through
  561. the "HP Color Laserwriter" choice.
  562. -There are some bugs in printing via OS/2 to Netware printers. 
  563. If you specify multiple copies from print, only one copy shows
  564. up on Netware served printers.
  565.  
  566. Forms Problems: 
  567. --------------
  568.  
  569. -If you are using multiple browser windows within Netscape,
  570. the form fields may not update properly. Use one browser window
  571. when filling out forms.
  572. -If you close Netscape and do not close Acrobat before starting
  573. Netscape again, form responses may not display. If you close 
  574. Netscape then also make sure you close Acrobat before reopening 
  575. Netscape and using it to fill in forms.

  577. Video Problems:
  578. --------------

  580.    Fixpak 17 users may see some different colors at different color
  581. modes. Upgrade to Fixpak 26.
  582.  
  583. Users with the following video cards are experiencing crashing or 
  584. other problems: 
  585.   Toshiba Laptops and other computers using the Chips & 
  586. Technologies display chipset should upgrade to the drivers that 
  587. can be found on the Chips & Technologies web pages. This is true 
  588. for the 65550 chip set and possibly others. If you don't do this, 
  589. Acrobat may lock up your system. Their home page can be found at

  591.   Elsa Winner1000 cards using 1.03 drivers should be upgraded 
  592. to 1.04 drivers (available on Compuserve and elsewhere)
  593.   Older Matrox drivers should be updated to the latest version. HP 
  594. customers and other people using "OEM" versions of the MGA card 
  595. should go directly to their PC manufacturer for the latest MGA 
  596. driver; Matrox does not support those cards directly.
  597.   Those who are using a Cirrus Logic 54XX driver may experience some 
  598. weird background colors with "font smoothing" turned on. You can
  599. fix this problem by turning "font smoothing" off in the general 
  600. preferences.
  601.   IBM Aptiva users and others using a Trident chipset have exper-
  602. ienced problems. Chips (9660, 9680, 9440) with a BIOS date of 1995 
  603. (and possibly other dates) need to update their drivers. The latest 
  604. drivers that we know work are TA1.4 and TX1.4. The correct drivers, 
  605. as well as a utility to determine which chipset you have can be 
  606. found at:

  609. Netscape Problems
  610. -----------------

  612. -Avoid resizing the Netscape application when viewing PDF files.
  613. Due to a bug in netscape, Acrobat will reload the PDF file
  614. and start at the first page.
  615. -Try to avoid viewing Acrobat files inside of netscape with the
  616. system set to 8-bit color mode. You will get lots of redrawing
  617. due to the OS/2 color palette.
  618. -If you have installed Fixpak 1 for OS/2 Version 4, you have just
  619. broken our weblink software. IBM has broken DDE in this release.
  620. Clicking on URLs from Acrobat will no longer work. Netscape has a 
  621. workaround for this problem: Restore pmddeml.dll from the Navigator 
  622. distribution file. Run nsos2202.exe in a temporary directory (this 
  623. will unarchive netscape) and after it has expanded, copy pmddeml.dll 
  624. to your c:\os2\dll directory.
  625. -If you improperly installed the latest Netscape over the older
  626. one, you may have an old PMDDEML.DLL in the Netscape directory. 
  627.  The end result is that when you try to launch Netscape from
  628. Acrobat using the Weblink button, it will launch twice, 
  629. then produce an error message. The fix is to delete the 
  630. PMDDEML.DLL in the Netscape directory.
  631. -Sometimes after using Acrobat with Netscape, Acrobat comes up
  632. in the system window list, but is invisible. To show Acrobat, 
  633. right click on the entry in the window list then select tile.
  634. -Acrobat finds must be done from the binoculars icon, not the Edit menu.

  637. Voice Navigation

  641. A few dialogs (such as the "open file" dialog) do not come to the front 
  642. when issuing a voice command. To fix this problem, issue a "Window List" 
  643. command. That will actually bring focus back to the misbehaving dialog. 
  644. You will not need to do this again unless you close and reopen Acrobat.

  647. Uninstall
  648. ---------
  649. -If your uninstall does not complete with a message, there is
  650. a chance that it "trapped" while deleting the program objects.
  651. To fix this, simply delete the directory which contained acrobat,
  652. and optionally delete c:\os2\acroread.ini.
