WELCOME TO DeSCRIBE'S README FILE!
DeScribe is the prototype of a Presentation Manager document
processor being developed by Lennane Advanced Products
(otherwise known as "LeAP"), in Sacramento, California.
We think those who are familiar with Presentation Manager will
find the program extremely intuitive, easy and fun to use. Just
startup DeScribe and experiment, you'll see what we mean.
For more information about a feature, press F1 for DeScribe's
on-line Help facility. You can directly access Microsoft's
Quick Help for programming assistance by pressing Shift+F1.
DeScribe follows Common User Access (CUA) guidelines, which are
part of IBM Systems Application Architecture.
We also have provided the DeScribe Handbook which will give you
a brief description of DeScribe's functions and features. We
think you'll find the Quick Reference especially helpful.
The remainder of this file contains installation instructions
and notes about DeScribe. Don't forget that our bulletin board,
DeTail, is up and running, and you can use it to share
comments, download programs, and obtain upgrades as they become
available. It's a free service of LeAP.
INSTALLING DeScribe
Before installing DeScribe, be sure to make one backup copy of
the program. DeScribe runs under OS/2 version 1.10 and was
developed using SDK 1.06.
To install DeScribe on your hard disk, copy the DeScribe
program file (DESCRIBE.EXE) to a directory of your choice.
In the Start Programs window, add DeScribe to your list of
programs.
To make font files available to DeScribe, rename *.FON files to
*.DLL (or copy *.FON to *.DLL). By default font files are
installed in \OS2\DLL.
Provide paths to Quick Help and you compilers in your
CONFIG.SYS file. If Quick Help resides in C:\PMSDK\PBIN, for
example, your CONFIG.SYS should include "SET
PATH=C:\PMSDK\PBIN".
STARTING DeScribe
Start DeScribe as you would any other Presentation Manager
program. Double-click on DeScribe in the Start Programs window,
etc.
NOTES About DeScribe
Here are some things you might want to know about DeScribe:
* You can only search forward using pattern matching. Ignore
case in the Define Search dialog is ignored during pattern
matching.
* You cannot search for control characters, end of line or
paragraph marks.
* The Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikeout choices are not
active in the Style menu, but can be selected from the
Properties dialog.
* "Vector" fonts can take substantially longer to display in a
window than bitmap fonts, but they allow a wider range of point
sizes and set widths than bitmap fonts.
* DeScribe editors which have been started using the New Editor
Window choice, share the Clipboard, Help facility and other
features. The Clipboard cannot be shared between two DeScribe
programs started from the Task Manager.
* To obtain page number information, print the entire document
first. You can approximate the page number or page range on
subsequent printouts. DeScribe uses standard Presentation
Manager spooling and font resources.
* When you choose Review Compile "No more compilation messages"
appears in the information area under any of the following
circumstances:
1. The compile has not completed.
2. The compile has completed but there were no errors.
3. There are no more compiler errors to review.
* When multiple compiles have been completed but not yet
reviewed, Review Compile selects the first document, if any,
containing a compilation error.
* Due to a problem with the Presentation Manager, 8 pt. Courier
characters are not displayed properly.
* DeScribe's "point and type" feature only applies to typing.
When you move the cursor to the right of a end of line or end
of document mark and perform a paste, the text is pasted at the
end of the line.
* When text is selected, DeScribe lets you to type, paste and
delete any text which is not selected. You must move the cursor
outside of the highlighted text. When the cursor is within or
immediately adjacent to the selection, and you type, paste or
delete, the selected text is replaced or deleted. Cut, copy and
append always work on selected text without regard to the
cursor location.
* When you extend a text selection with the mouse
(Shift+click), the cursor stays at its current location.
* The Close choice in the File menu closes all document windows
containing the active document, and closes DeScribe if there
are no open document windows remaining. The fast path to close
is Ctrl+C.
* The F6 key switches through document windows as follows:
F6 - switches forward through windows of the same file
Shift+F6 - switches backward through windows of the same file
Ctrl+F6 - switches forward through windows of different files
Shift+Ctrl+F6 - switches backward through windows of different
files
* Occasionally, PM thinks the Ctrl key is still down after
you've released it. Press Ctrl again to correct this.
THE LeAP BULLETIN BOARD--DeTAIL
The Lennane Advanced Products bulletin board, called DeTail, is
a free service. DeTail operates 24 hours a day (closed 8am -
10am PST for maintenance), 7 days per week, providing:
** Latest updates on DeScribe, DeDump and other free LeAP
programs.
** E-Mail for fast transfer of messages between users, and
between users and LeAP.
** Progress reports on OS/2 and Presentation Manager to keep
you current on what's happening. Join our OS/2 Developers'
Forum!
The 'details' about DeTail:
Phone: (916) 929-3237
Modem: 300, 1200, or 2400 baud
8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, full duplex
Note: Currently, DeTail uses your first and last names as your
BBS user name. If you logon to DeTail for the first time and
enter a first name and last name belonging to a current user,
DeTail will request the password for that user. Press the Enter
key three times at the password prompt to disconnect from
DeTail, and logon again using a variation of your name. For
example, if the name JOHN SMITH is already taken, try logging
on as JOHN_MOON, JOHN3, etc. Be creative!
