ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. General Help for Plug and Play for PCMCIA ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Plug and Play for PCMCIA is an OS/2 application that gives you access to the
PCMCIA slot and PC Card. Plug and Play for PCMCIA can launch the object that is
registered to the PC Card.
Plug and Play for PCMCIA General Help provides the following information:
o Menu/Tool bar
o Slot information
No Slot number
Card button Change card settings
Status button View card status
Launch button Launch an object
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Plug and Play for PCMCIA Menu ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The following is a list of options in the Plug and Play for PCMCIA menu bar
accompanied by a brief description of each option. You can also obtain a brief
description of an option by clicking the right mouse button on any toolbar
button. For more information about each menu and its functions, double-click on
its lower-left title:
Power Control Power on or off a PC Card.
Status Notice Show PC Card event notification.
Open Plug and Play for PCMCIA folder Open the Plug and Play for PCMCIA
folder.
Card List List PC Cards that have been used on the machine.
Card Services Show Card Services information.
Change view Change main view between slot status list and multi-icon
window.
Security Execute Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security function.
Supported PC Card information Show supported PC Card information.
Help Display help information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Slot number ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to view the slot number and some specific card information
under the slot number:
o COM number
o Drive letter
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Card button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this button to customize the settings related to the PC Card.
Each button shows the icon associated with the PC Card.
o Card setting
o Launch setting
o Sound setting
Press Ctrl + a number key to quickly access the button.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Status button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this button to view the resource information of the PC Card.
This button shows the icon associated with the status of the PC Card.
o Assigned resources
o Card information
o Client information
Press ALT + a number key to quickly access the button.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Launch button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this button to launch an object that has been registered using the launch
setting dialog box.
Press Ctrl + ALT + a number key to quickly access the button.

Use these options to customize Plug and Play for PCMCIA:
Beep Beep setting for events
Pop up Pop-up setting for events
Icon Indication setting for multi-icon view
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Open Plug and Play for PCMCIA folder ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use the Plug and Play for PCMCIA folder to access other Plug and Play for
PCMCIA utilities.

Use Card Services to view Card Services information.
Resources View available resources.
Information View Card Services information.
Client View Client program information of Card Services.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 10. Change view ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Plug and Play for PCMCIA has two types of main windows.
Use Change view to change the main window between the slot status list and
multi-icon view.
If you want to access a menu, move your mouse pointer anywhere on the window
and click mouse button 2.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 11. Supported PC Card information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This function shows the supported PC Card list(PCMCIA.CRD).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 12. Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use these options to get help information about Plug and Play for PCMCIA. The
following items are available from this menu:
Index View the index for help.
General help View general help.
Opening Logo Set the opening logo option.
About Plug and Play for PCMCIA Learn about Plug and Play for PCMCIA.
Supported PC Card View the supported PC Card list.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Card setting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Initially, a default card name and icon are prepared by Plug and Play for
PCMCIA for each PC Card.
You can change the card name and card icon that are associated with the PC Card
in the slot.
To change an icon:
1. Select an object, such as an application or a program. Drag the object
and drop it beside the original icon.
2. Or press the "Icon..." button to select an icon.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Select icon ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can select a new icon for the PC Card.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Launch setting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use Launch setting to register an object, such as an application, program, or
folder, to a specific PC Card. When an object is registered, it launches
(starts) the object according to the launch choices you made.
To register an object:
1. Select an object, such as an application or a program.
2. Drag the object and drop it beside the original icon.
3. Set a launch option.
Note: Plug and Play for PCMCIA must be running for the Launch setting
function to become active.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Sound setting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use Sound setting to register sound, such as a WAV file, to a specific PC Card.
To register a sound file:
1. Press the Browse pushbutton.
2. Select a sound file from the file list.
3. Set a launch option.
Note: To make a sound effective, sound function (digital audio) must be
operational. Also, Plug and Play for PCMCIA must be running for the
Sound function to become active.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Resources ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field shows the system resources used by the PC Card:
o IRQ level
o I/O Port
o Memory window
When a resource assignment error occurs, this field shows the error status and
the latest requested resource.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field shows the PC Card information:
o Product information
o Vcc
o COM number
o Drive letter
o Write protect
o Battery
o Region
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 19. Power control ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can turn off the power for a PC Card to save battery power for your system.
Before turning off the power to the card, make sure that your PC Card can be
turned off.
Note: Some PC Cards, such as LAN cards, can't be turned off when the card is
connected to the server. For more information, see your PC Card's
manual.
To turn off the PC Card that is currently turned on ("OK" status):
1. Select the PC Card you want to turn off.
2. Click on the OFF button.
To turn on the PC Card:
1. Select the PC Card you want to turn on.
2. Click on the ON button.
Note: The power-off function is active while Plug and Play for PCMCIA is
running. When you close Plug and Play for PCMCIA, Plug and Play for
PCMCIA turns on the power for all cards.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 20. Power-off ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Before turning the power off for the PC Card, make sure that your PC Card can
be turned off.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 21. Beep ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to set a beep depending on the card status.
To set a beep, select the check box for each item.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 22. Pop-up ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to display the Plug and Play for PCMCIA window when a PC card
is used.
To set a pop-up option, select the check box for each item.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 23. Icon ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Always visible Use this option to always display the Plug and Play for
PCMCIA icon in the foreground(visible).
Resource indication Use this option to show the PC Card status as a small dot
in the lower-right corner of the icon in a multi-icon
window. The color of the dot shows the following status:
Transparent dot The card is In the slot.
Green dot The card is Ready to use.
Red dot The card is turned Off by the Control Power function.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 24. Card List ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This shows the registered PC Cards. Each PC Card has its own setting in the
Plug and Play for PCMCIA INI file. The contents of the INI file are the
following:
PC Card information
PC Card name
Icon for the PC Card
Associated application to be launched for the PC Card events
Associated sound file to be played for the PC Card events
You can edit or remove PC Card settings:
o To edit the PC Card settings:
1. Select a PC Card you want to edit.
2. Click on the Setting button.
3. Edit the PC Card settings.
4. Click on OK.
o To remove a PC Card from the PC Card list:
1. Select a PC Card you want to remove from the list.
2. Click on Remove.
3. Click on OK.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Card Services information ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this function to view the following information about Card Services:
Vendor: Vendor name
Release: PCMCIA Release level
Revision: Revision number of Card Services for OS/2
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 26. Card Services resources ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this function to display available Card Services resources for a client
program of Card Services:
o Available IRQ
o Available Memory
Note: Available I/O is not displayed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 27. Client ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this function to display client program information of Card Services:
o Client type
- Memory client
- Memory Technology Driver
- I/O client
o Client handle of Card Services
o Client revision
o Revision date
o Card Services release level
o Client name
o Vendor string
Note: Only the client that handles client information function is displayed.

Use this option to get the Help index.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. General Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this option to get general help for Plug and Play for PCMCIA.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. About Plug and Play for PCMCIA ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this window to view the product information for the Plug and Play for
PCMCIA.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Status ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
There are four states for a PC Card:
Empty There is no PC Card in the slot.
In A PC Card is inserted, but not configured, or a PC Card
has failed to be configured. To view the error
information, press the status button.
Note: Some PC Cards are not configured until they are
accessed by the appropriate program.
Ready A PC Card is ready to use.
Off A PC Card is set to be turned off by the Power Control
function. To turn the power on, select the Power Control
function from the Actions pull-down menu.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. COM number ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Plug and Play for PCMCIA gets a COM number from the AUTODRV2.SYS device driver,
included in the Plug and Play for PCMCIA package.
When a modem or serial PC Card is enabled by a device driver other than
AUTODRV2.SYS, Plug and Play for PCMCIA can't display the number information to
COM.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 33. Drive Letter ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Plug and Play for PCMCIA gets drive letter information from the PCMSSDIF.SYS
device driver, which is included in the Plug and Play for PCMCIA package.
When the Plug and Play for PCMCIA storage device drivers are not installed,
Plug and Play for PCMCIA cannot display the drive letter information.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 34. Write Protect ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Write Protect status of the PC Card is as follows:
NO PC Card Write Protect is OFF. This indicates that the device is not
protected so that data can be read or written to (read/write).
YES PC Card Write Protect is ON. This indicates that the device is
protected so that data cannot be written to (read-only).
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 35. Battery ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The battery status of the PC Card is listed as follows:
Good Battery is good. The PC Card is operational.
Low Battery status is low. You must exchange the battery of the PC Card.
Refer to the documentation that came with the PC Card for battery
installation information.
Dead Battery is dead. The PC Card battery is depleted and should be
replaced.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 36. Region ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field shows the region information, which consists of the memory type and
size for the PC Card.
The memory types available on a PC Card are:
o Masked ROM
o One-time PROM
o UV EPROM
o EEPROM
o Flash EPROM
o Static RAM
o Dynamic RAM
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 37. Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security Function ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Plug and Play for PCMCIA offers the security function for the PC Card and PC
Card slot. By using this function, you can protect your PC from unexpected
access through the PC Card slot. Also, the Security function offers a warning
alarm for unexpected card removal and insertion.
The Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security function provides the following options:
o Slot Close
When you set the Security function with this option, all the PC Card
slots are disabled.
Note: Whether or not they are being used, all the PC Cards are powered
off. There are PC Cards that can't be powered off during their
operation, such as a LAN card. Before selecting Slot Close, make
sure that your PC Cards can be powered off. For more information,
refer to the documentation that came with your PC Card.
o Warning Alarm
When you set the Security function with this option, it offers a warning
alarm for unexpected card removal and insertion.
Note: If you set the system sound (beep) at the minimum level in the
system settings, a warning alarm might not be loud enough to be
heard.
These Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security functions are managed by a password.
o Password Setting
When you select Password at the Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security panel,
the Password Setting dialog is displayed. You can then select a new
password, change the current password, and erase the password.
o Cancel Security Function
When you set the Security function, and Security is selected at the main
panel, a Password Input dialog is displayed. When you enter the correct
password, the Security function is cancelled. The Security function is
also cancelled when you turn off your system.
Note: Plug and Play for PCMCIA offers the Security function for the PC
Card and PC Card Slot. For the total protection of your system,
use the Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security functions together with
another security program, such as the power-on password or the
keyboard lock on your system.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 38. Access Password ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
o Setting a password / Changing a password
You can set a new password or change the current password by entering the
same password in the New and Verify fields. The password must be between
1 and 8 characters.
o Removing a password
To remove a password, leave both the New and Verify fields blank and
select OK.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 39. Slot Close ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When you set the Security function with the Slot Close option, all PC Card
slots are powered off whether or not the PC cards are being used.
Note: There are PC Cards that can't be powered off during their operation,
such as a LAN card. Before selecting the Slot Close option, make sure
your PC Cards can be powered off. For more information, refer to the
documentation that came with your PC Cards.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Input password ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Enter your password for the Plug and Play for PCMCIA Security functions. If you
forget your password, you must reinstall Plug and Play for PCMCIA.
